- The original 'Blade Runner' broke barriers in the world of special effects when it premiered in 1982. Now, the creators behind 'Blade Runner 2049' are going even bigger. VICE toured the sequel's set with the folks who brought it to life, speaking with the production designer, producer, and director Denis Villeneuve to see how it all got made. Then, we talked to the film's stars-including Harrison Ford and Ryan Gosling-about what it was like living inside such a surreal world.

I'm into it already!
Normally I would be a total curmudgeon about a sequel like this,especially since Blade Runner is my favorite movie. But Denis Villeneuve is an incredible director, and seeing in this video that the film will stay so grounded in practical effects (which the original revolutionized) and how stylistically consistent it is with the world created in the original...I can't wait to see this.
I'm really sad that this movie didn't do very well at the box office. It's a masterpiece.

This turned out to be one of the best films I’ve ever seen.
This was just the perfect sequel, immediately became one of my favourite films, and Villeneuve my favourite director, the man just really gets it

I couldn't agree more and this film + DUNE II have turned me into a Villeneuve fanatic. My friends and my parter are so over it they're rolling their eyes behind my back, but I can't get enough of him and his approach to filmmaking.

Roger Deakins is the most important part of this movie. The movie could turn out to be a pile of dog shit, but it'll packed to the brim with visual splendor. The man keeps getting better with age.

Skyfall received love/hate criticism from fans and non fan, but yeah his cinematography style will not disappoint anyone.

No other film had such an impact on architecture, fashion, music, cinema as Blade Runner did... Blade Runner was voted by a public of scientists as the best sf movie ever made because of its plausibility. It is the second most requested movie in libraries around this planet! Its darkness is extremely seductive/attractive. Its visual achievement is still being studied and copied every year, not to say every month, in all kind of videos, ads, jingles, video games, music clips, cartoons and movies.
In Blade Runner you have a study of linguistic, anthropology, sociology, psychology, architecture, science, climatic change, urban design, interior design, car design, polution § environmental problems evolution, philosophical § metaphysical questionning, surpopulation, man/machine relationship, corporation takeover... What is Life ? Does man become god by creating artificial life ? Can man's creation wipe out humanity ? How do cyborg/bioengeneering/genetic science and Artificial Intelligence impact our society and redefine human kind ? What are emotions ? What are memories ? What define humanity and does a living being as complex as us but artificially created by us stand as our equal or stay a disposable machine or slave ? Could it/she/he feel "Love" and be loved by a human ?... It is anticipation genre, it is science fiction genre at its finest, and the whole thing presented in 2 hours of utter beauty, magnificent visuals, top quality acting, unforgetable music. In this movie, "the future is old" which is one of a kind stance to present this subject and the maestria with which Mr Scott set the details of everything is outstanding...I re-watched it a few days ago for the 201th time, I must say that every single scene, one after the other, is an exquisite piece of art ( 2007 final cut version). It triggers deep and wonderful emotions in the viewer unless he/she has no heart ... and of course in 2017, if you are only sensitive to fast paced movie with only actions and special effects without any search for meaningfulness, you might not get it. It touches the past, the present and the futur of any living human being both individually and as a specie. You can watch zillions of movies dealing with thoses subjects: Ex Machina, The Machine, Tron, The Matrix, The Lawnmower Man, Ghost In The Shell, Frankeinstein, Lucy, Transcendence, 2001 A Space Odyssey, The Signal (etc...etc...), none of them achieve what Blade Runner does achieve (Blade Runner 2049 is quite good though :-)... Each year that passes by, makes this movie more relevant and beautiful....I'm just a random guy, in my opinion, Blade Runner is not the best sf movie, it is the best movie ever made. I salute you all, Blade Runner fans as much as others :-)... .... NB: I oppose transhumanism

The first Incal is from 1980. Blade Runner was released in 1982 so you can imagine they were already working on this movie in 1980 at the same time L’incal was starting to get released. Moebius is French… I am too (sorry ! no one's perfect !:-). As a teen, I watched Blade Runner in 1982 and was blown away by it like millions of other persons through out the world. I read all the « Incal » books available in 1986. In the mean time, between 1982 and 1986, I had already watched Blade Runner tens and tens of times. After I read "L'Incal", did It decrease my love for Mr Scott’s movie ? No at all.... Did you watch the 2013 documentary called "Jodorowski Dune" ? if not then I highly recommend you do ...The storyboard of the movie Dune, created by the French Moebius and the Mexican Jodorowski was given in 1975 to every single hollywood studio. Each studio answered that it was a marvelous storyboard, refused to finance the project, and kept an original copy of the storyboard :-). 2 years after, G Lucas released star wars, which is using scenes from this 1975 storyboard. 9 years after, David Lynch released his version of « Dune ».
This 1975 storyboard from Jodorowski/Moebius’s «Dune » was ripped off from its content in zillions of science fiction series and movies, decade after decade, and up to the present days.
For example, among others, the "pyramidal" structure of the engineers in "Prometheus 2012" comes directly from this 1975 Moebius storyboard. Or Luc Skywalker practicing laser saber with a small drone in 1977 star wars, was also in this 1975 storyboard (etc…). The list is endless… Did G Lucas or S. Spielberg or Paul Verhoeven (Total Recall 1990) thanked or mentioned Moebius in any of their movie? not to my knowledge….This 1975 storyboard served as a base for 75 % of all the science fiction movies you and I can think of. It was plaggiated, copied and ripped off for decades and decades (star wars, dune, total recall, the fifth element, ghost in the shell, irobot, the matrix (etc…) Those movies made millions of dollars without never ever a thanks to Moebius § Jodorowski. At least, Sir Ridley Scott (:-) had the decency to thank Moebius in the ending credits of "Alien" for example, and was always very clear about being inspired by Moebius both for Alien and Blade Runner, when most of the holly-wooden producers and directors like Lucas, spielberg and zillion of others blatantly stole many ideas from Moebius/Jodorowski without never ever mentioning them or paying them.. Welcome to the very "holly" wood ! :-)... Now, that being said, what is artistic creation ? Isn't it also « stealing ideas » from past or contemporary artists ? Crediting them if you’re honest or hiding the inspiration if you’re dishonest or want to maximize your profits :-) Who, better than « holly » wood producers, know how to maximize profits ? :-) Tell me which painting, music, movie, sculpture (etc...) was 100 % conceived and created in the mind of one only person ? :-)
Yes indeed Blade runner is inspired by Moebius’s work, Ridley Scott never lied about it § this inspiration did not and does not decrease the pleasure I have watching his masterpiece. On the other hand, G.Lucas, Steven Spielberg, Cameron, and hundred of others « geniuses » should slightly be ashamed of stealing the work of others without any artistic credits, mentions and financial 'copyright' payments. Ryan’s character is MUCH more likable and relatable than Deckards. Loved the movie.
He was actually competent too. I never got why Deckard was considered so high-tier as a Blade Runner considering he spends the entire movie getting beat up by everyone he’s after. Joe was at least someone you really wouldn’t want to cross paths with, but was also warm and kind to the people and holograms around him.

What I find beautiful about Blade Runner and even more about its sequel is that every character which has a line of dialogue could be a protagonist of their own story. They just feel so live, real and attached to their world.

Since the movie is about the future of mankind, it's a tricky question trying to get more information about how the film goes based on the impression it made on him during the making of the film.
Honestly it's the most reasonable response to a question like that.
Its a unique movie. Its been a week since i saw it and i miss seeing those breathtaking scenes and the unique music. Its an experience like no other. Im actually investing ALOT in a upgraded Dolby Atmos at my house just so i can truly enjoy watching this again and again.
It's good to see the trash mesa set ( 3:38 ) from years ago! :) I was there as a local (Hungarian) extra, with about 15-20 others.
I was a bit backwards and rightwards from where the lady is standing. At 5:05 there are some featured extras, like the bearded man on the left at 5:03.
We had the scene shot for a few days, the shooting itself was often done in a calmer pace. I'm glad I had the chance to be there.
I love how Ryan Gosling just straight up said "No" when asked if he wanted to share how to prepped for this role haha. I love actors.

came out and it got left out almost entirely, except for a few technical
categories. The Academy somehow found movies like Get Out, Call me by Your Name
or The Shape of Water to be much better...
Not as great as the first in all senses, since the first second the music, nothing like vangelis, to the end the epic words from Roy, in the middle love scene and theme, the death os priss, etc etc.
In 2049 luv seems like a terminator carácter and wallace a depress serial killer far from the elegante of Tirrell.

Need to see this again in a good cinema. The sound. The visuals, most importantly the gravitas and emotion. I loved K’s journey and how they portrayed it. Such a bittersweet character.
I work on movie sets...and again..no mention of the talented ,hard working crew that work their arses off to make features like this possible . I always want to hear what the Production Assistants think . Or the third A.D.'s ...who have hundreds of extras to herd through makeup and wardrobe. Or Wardrobe Assistants who tend to thousands of garments meant for lead , feature or extra. These people are the 'grease' that keeps all wheels running smoothly . They enable our Production Designers , Gaffers , Grips , Directors and producers to do their magic. A good P.A. bats too many curve balls a day to try and receive recognition or praise for each and everyone one he or she bats true. It's a thankless job. Anyone wants a 'unauthorized' view of what really goes on ,on a shoot... ask the P.A. Here's to you guy's..the true hero's of production. ;-)

Absolutely stunning film. Captured everything that was great about the original and then some.
This was great. I want about 3 more hours of this. BR is my favorite film, and I thought it impossible that another film, especially a sequel, could sit next to that title...2049 does. It's almost better in some ways...yes, I said it. I'm overjoyed that this sequel was better than I could have ever imagined.
My feelings exactly. Went to see 2049, expecting to be entertained but not overwhelmed. Was I wrong! To elevate a sequel to the same level as the original this way... words can't express how grateful I am that they pulled it off.

This movie is a masterpiece. Let down slightly by just one thing - Jered Leto's performance. Everything and everyone else is utterly on par with the original masterpiece which to this day remains as my favorite movie of all time.

That Rachel special effect was one of the most amazing things I've ever seen. Seems like they did a similar thing to the Y-Wing pilots in "Rogue One." Very impressive.

Love ScFi, Love Philip K Dick, Love Blade Runner! So naturally I LOVED this movie! Don't let the crap about the low box office numbers put you off. The first Blade Runner suffered the same problems oddly enough. Yet it's considered one of the best Scfi films of all time.
This film was such a beautifully respectful sequel, both paying homage to the original whilst forging it's own identity at the same time. Congrats to all involved who made this happen.
What made this movie great was they made it as good as the first one. He didn't try too hard. They didn't "wokeify" the script. They just made a story that made sense. They didn't interject any of "today" into the movie. That is key. Hollywood tries to interject too much of "the present" into movies today instead of letting people get lost in the movie and forget everything about reality.
I really love a great film like this. They don't mention it here but the memories scene went straight to my heart and made me cry for real, and I always think about it when I think of this film. Thanks for sharing Vice.

2 more sleeps until I see it, on an IMAX screen, chose in 2D rather than 3D, hope I made the right choice. The first film is my all time favourite movie. I wasn't supposed to see the first film in a cinema, it was an AA classification in the UK and I was only 13 (think you had to be 15 to see an AA). My dad thought I should be allowed to see it, so we saw it together, in a nearly empty cinema, people forget that it was a flop and has only risen to its iconic status in the intervening years. Then it was the first film we rented on home video when we got a VCR the year after and the first film I bought on DVD. It's the first film I watch whenever I've bought a new TV or video playing device as well. I'll be a little sad on Thursday as my dad didn't live long enough to see 2049. I've been skirting around the reviews and articles and trying to avoid spoilers. I don't think I'm going to be dissapointed and I'm almost giddy in anticipation.

Ryan Gosling and Ana de Armas is perfect couple in this amazing movie.
I must say, as someone who loves filmmaking and wants to absorb as much as I can from these types of videos, it really frustrates me that we seem to have this standard of only leaving people's name straps up for the duration of their first shot until it cuts. As an editor who has made many name straps in my life, I've never understood it.
I kept having to pause or go back to find out who's talking and what they do.
From an editing perspective, I think leaving the text up over multiple cuts actually helps tie the cuts together well, visually.

On some of Adam's more recent posts, I've dropped the hint that he should make the black leather coat that Roy Batty wears. Adam puts so much energy into the other costumes...a Batty leather coat could be worn a lot of the time in San Francisco. He's already got the light hair style...We only have warm nights about 3 weeks out of the year...and plenty of foggy days to creep around in. Seems so obvious to me....

they're damn near identical. Savage only got a couple hrs with the original but has also made every prop version from the original and all variants of it. unanswerable question.

Mmh, no Roger Deakins? It’s a cathedral of a movie because of him. His enriching collaboration with the great Villeneuve is a gift that keeps on giving. But DP tend to be overlooked for their stellar achievement in filmmaking, it’s really, really sad.
One of the things Scott did to hint that Deckard was a replicant was putting that subtle glow in his eyes that you quickly saw in one of the scenes in Blade Runner. All the replicants had it and so did Deckard.
Dr. Eldon Tyrell made Bladerunner. Its not Bladerunner without a scene of Tyrell in his robes chilling in bed and trading future stocks. How glorious that character was...
I love Joe Turkel. He did the same thing in The Shining as Lloyd the bartender.

2049 isn’t exactly sufferings from forgettable villains. Luv is terrifying.
I actually appreciated that 2049 did not over rely on intertextuality and throwbacks to the previous movie. It is the answer to my problems with another recent installment of a hallowed Sci Fi franchise: Star Wars.

Kind of glad I didn't watch this until after I saw the movie. Idk why companies allow this kind of indepth spoilers in a way before the movie came out.

The original was a dream like movement. Cant really beat that. It will be good but obviously faster paced and more action.
Not being a dick but have you seen the movie or are you just going by trailers and promo material? Modern trailers are 100% about selling the movie and often miss the mark on what tone and feel the filmmakers are going for. This could very well be a slow, methodical movie, with contextual action scenes here in there, like the first. Also keep in mind that Denis Villeneuve is a super atmospheric director and likes to take his time setting up scenes and is great at building tension. No way it will surpass the first but I wouldn't want any other modern director to make a sequel to Blade Runner

I worked for these two 'Blade Runner 2049' producers back in 2000. Broderick was the cool laid-back dude who still seems to have his head screwed on, but Andrew Kosove was the biggest asshole I've ever met - EVER! One day on set, he turned around without looking where he was going and nearly walked into me. Instead of saying sorry, he said "Never cross my path again!"....and that crazy voice of his?! The stuff of nightmares!! I used to do impressions of him to the crew behind his back - Sucker!

It is natural for people to get a little tired after watching a very long movie. I was mesmerized by this one. I didn't want it to end. Dune is probably going to be another epic. I can't wait to see what Denis did with it.

Because so many people are making edits and shorts of this movie All over CZcams and Instagram and a lot of guys I think can relate to the loneliness of what it feels like to be okay and the fact that AI is now becoming popular and a lot of people are into the AI companions like the app replica and it reminds him of the girl Joi from the movie and what the future could hold especially for a lot of men that are lonely in this day and age......
I've never been one into that hole AI girlfriend thing I mean I've been able to have plenty of girls throughout my experience but I don't know I just think that and a few other reasons people are finally just now realizing that it was a good movie and the visuals were really good it is a little bit slow as far as the pace but it does really pick up and become a good movie if you actually take the time to understand it and watch it and you appreciate the first one I think too
this movie is so creative, with a lots of designing character, i really wish i found my self in this team one day. creativity is the best. great producer, editor , designers and actors. bravo

I've not seen the sequal yet, the original was sooo good! Wonderful atmosphere, legendary cast. I was hooked into the story from the start. Coupled with the moody track from Vangelis. A true gem of a movie. 'The future looks... frightening....'
Atfter watching this 'Making of... ' I'm much more inclined to see the full film.
I'm going to watch this film and judge it on its own merit. It'll be hard to keep the original out of my head, but I really want to give this squeal a chance.
