  • An alert has been issued to all UK children over a sextortion epidemic. Police warn that foreign gangs, mostly from West Africa and Southeast Asia, are targeting kids in the UK for blackmail. This comes amid calls to ban mobile phones for children and stop young teens from using social media.
Celia reveals what it was like not having her phone for a week. While she said time away from her phone was good, she believes 'social media can be a good thing.' And, Jonathan Haidt believes that smartphones have ignited a 'wildfire' of anxiety and depression amongst young people around the world, by granting them 'continuous access to social media, online video games, and other internet-based activities.'

Ban them, we did not need them when I was a teenager. In fact, they were not even invented back then when I was a teenager...or the smartphones were in their primitive stages.

Ban kids from having smartphones.. the same kids that have a tablet shoved in their face from tge age of 3/4 because struggling parents need peace.

When my child turn 12 she can have a Nokia 3310 to just make calls and texts, I totally agree. it is the parents responsibility to save their children from their self.

@@thunder-hedge That's not the case. Simpler mobile phones are still available to buy new. I think many older people use them as they don't want apps or many features, just to be able to make calls. I'd like to see them used more for children & teens too.

Let's not pretend as if teens are clamouring to get the newest iPhone on contract themselves.
Parents bear a burden of responsibility for whatever dangers their children face on social media and online.

I never had a smart phone growing up, mainly cause they didn’t exist! i am 32 this year, I’ve experienced bullying in school despite not having social media, plus recently have also experienced bullying by using social media. Predominantly from teenagers taking advantage of people like my self who have a Learning Disability and other issues too

After the MH17 crash in Ukraine, I saw pictures of deceased passengers that were taken by those who were first at the crash site. Despite being an adult, I couldn’t believe what I was seeing. I have spent a fortnight without a phone and I felt happier and sharper than before.

I believe that is the parents responsibility to keep an eye on what their kids are doing out side of school it's not the schools responsibility unless something happens in school
Social media we didn't have it or mobile phones when I was growing up and it wasn't like it is now kids went out and had friends not invisible online unknown friends

I would say no to banning smart phones altogether, however, like with app banks such as monzo and starling etc, all social media platforms should require you to have legit photo id to prove your age to use the platform, then it gets everyone under age of it.

I think you can put regulations. But to ban entirely is both unrealistic and an overreaction. It's the classic 'in my day we never had this so therefore our generation is better.'
There are benefits that can be drawn from social media. And if the government or really parents were willing to work with social media and phone companies smartphones could be integrated in a healthy way into our lives. They're acting like it's a drug akin to smoking.
It isn't. It's something new and it's the classic thing a lot of people in the older generation do. It's new! Therefore it's evil and will rot kids brains.
