  • There are definitely some options in this price range for Flangers, but the TC stands out with its build quality and solid features. The sped knob could be more linear, but other than that, it is a winner.

    I try to explain what's technically going on in a flanger. If someone reads this and knows better, please correct me.
    The flanger creates a copy of Your signal and adds it to Your dry signal with a certain delay. So what's coming out of the flanger ist what is going into it plus a delayed copy of that input. The flanger then changes the delaytime of that added signal over time. And here ist what the knobs do:
    FEEDBACK: The amplitude (loudness) of the added signal.
    RATE: The frequency of the altering of delay time.
    MANUAL: The average or minimal delay time. Witch one is not clear, but also not important because we can not see the values but only hear what comes out.
    DEPTH: The amplitude of the delay time that changes over time. (How far the delay time does go up and down before returning.)
    I'm sorry for my poor English. I hope this helps someone to get less confused about flangers.

    • @nootgourd3452
      @nootgourd3452 Před 5 lety +4

      Feedback: taking the signal from the flanger and feeding it back into itself. the knob controls the amount of signal that is fed back into the flanger. This emphasizes the flange sound.

    You may have just saved me some time and money. I wanted this for the occasional Van Halen riff, but like in Unchained, it’s a matter of timing, to actuate the flanger just for that quick, three note intermittent riff. But, your note that the footswitch triggers the effect upon *release* is a significant issue.

    If I had to choose just one of all modulation pedals from that vintage tank series, I think I would choose that Thunderstorm. Second option would be the Afterglow, third the Blood Moon and fourth the Tailspin. (but maybe because for Blood Moon and Tailspin I already have that Rotovibe, that is sort of similar to a phaser and a vibrato, two in one switchable). TC Electronic just didn't cover tremolo this time. (maybe one day... collections like that can grow)
    For cheaper budget reality, I keep an eye on that Joyo Flanger (you have made a very good video about that some time ago).
    The Joyo would be an option to mod, adding an expression pedal to control speed rate (like a moog flanger).
    That Thunderstorm from TC Electronic would be something to have just the way it is. I would feel pity about it and wouldn't be able to modify it (because it's so nice that I wouldn't want to wreck it's tank enclosure... I would just carefully open to see what's inside and then re-assemble it back to its original form. nerd curiosities).
    Cheers!!!
    Luke

    looks like it's modeled after boss bf-2 in my opinion. sound isn't bad. the rate knob's sweep isn't the best but still usable. I personally use flanging effect with slow rate anyway so I wouldn't mind the rate knob at all (ALSO, for its price, i think the pedal's overall functionality is a great deal). for high quality flanging madness, go for strymon or hartman.

  • @JohnHorneGuitar
    @JohnHorneGuitar Před 7 lety

    Any idea how this compares to the TC Vortex Flanger? I had one but never felt it had the "liquid" analog kind of sweep I was looking for. Perhaps a simpler analog device is better? I really just want Andy Summers-type sounds in a small footprint.

    • @ChristopherHMJacques
      @ChristopherHMJacques Před 7 lety

      If you're looking for the Summers sound, you might want to check out Electric Mistress knock-offs (or an Electric Mistress--although there's a lot of opinions on how new EHX Electric Mistresses compare to older versions); it was the pedal he used for flange and chorus sounds. Mooer's ELady (or Elec Lady) is only the most well-known of many Chinese takes on the Electric Mistress in a mini pedal form; if you look around, there are a lot of them.

    • @JohnHorneGuitar
      @JohnHorneGuitar Před 7 lety

      Thanks I'm considering the e-lady too! I was really just waiting to hear a bit more of the Thunderstorm before pulling the trigger. Honestly it's an effect I will rarely use, but if I can't get a tone I like it will NEVER be used.

    • @Paul_Lenard_Ewing
      @Paul_Lenard_Ewing Před 7 lety

      The Modtone mini pie shaped jobbie is the best of the cheap Flangers ...thr Mooer will get you by OK. They make over 20 re-brands of it . Right now you can get it with the Rowin label for $23.00 USD. on Ali Express.

  • @Deeplycloseted435
    @Deeplycloseted435 Před 6 lety +5

    I agree 100%. The drive and distortion are not very good, the delay and reverb are passable, but the modulation pedals are excellent for $70.
    I will say though, that the digital delay pedal is misunderstood. You guitar players want to Ron Popeal everything, “set it and forget it”. That thing, if one starts to really jerk the knobs around with lost of feedback on, it will go absolutely crazy in all sorts of interesting ways. More of a sound design pedal IMO, and less practical that it does that....but still cool.

    • @Deeplycloseted435
      @Deeplycloseted435 Před 6 lety

      Also, WTF with the mono Dimension pedal???? Even the Behringer version was stereo. I would buy that one now of it had a stereo option.
      Uli told us syntheads he is recreating the Juno-60 chorus. Great, but when he showed it to us all, it was mono out only. That is not the Juno chorus, then. I don’t always like stereo modulation, but usually I do.

    My favorite flanger is the old EHX Electric Mistress unit I used back in the 80's. Because of the large footprint and AC power, I don't want to buy a vintage EHX EM. I can't tell whether his unit can get there or not because the demo is doesn't go for the settings I'm after. The depth and feedback settings are set too high throughout this demo, both clean and distorted amp tones. Most of the sounds demo'd I'd never use. Oh well, I love TC Electronic pedals. Maybe the Vortex would be a better choice?

    Ein analoger Flanger mit Manual (Delay!)-Regler? Ist doch super. Soviele gibt es doch da gar nicht. Mir fällt da nur die Mutter aller Flanger (Electric Mistress Deluxe) ein. Aber halt, auch die hatte nur 3 Regler. Und trotzdem flangt sie gewaltig. Ein richtiger Flanger braucht aber 4 Regler. Ich werde diesen TC/Behringer Flanger auf jeden Fall mal testen, weil ich gar nicht soviele Alternativen kenne (Analog, 4 Regler?).
    Nochmal zur Funktion des Manual Reglers: der müsste doch bei extremer Einstellung, ohne Rate und Depth, ein hörbares Delay erzeugen. Mit Feedback ergibt das dann ein Delay mit Feedback. Und Rate und Depth modulieren dann die Delay-Zeit, die der Manual-Regler vorgibt. Ist das so?

  • @davidwoods80

    So we keep hearing about build quality... I suggest that Henning take the whole lot of them, hook them up, and drive a car over them while he plays his prototype.! Will the tremolo tremble under the weight? Will the drives be driven to destruction? Will the chorus sing with pain? Now there's a video only EytschPi42 would do...

      Also flangers really work well in a mix when used sparingly. Time the depth and rate to the tempo of a song and they add subtle movement and variation, also space and stereo spread, great for double tracking, or fake double tracking guitars.
      Its not always about the extremes of what a pedal can do, it is often more to do with the subtle changes it can introduce.

      B: they ditched the plastic enclosure
      C: Tore himself, had his engineering team tweak all designs to improve the sound
      D: for the price, they ain’t bad at all
      Most cheap analog pedals are the new “mini style” pedals which I don’t really care for. Sometimes the footprint is so small, that if you’re not using fresh velcro, they keep coming loose on your board because the contact service is so small.
      I prefer analog for modulation almost always, but frankly many analog modulation pedals that are simple like these cost significantly more, and don’t really sound all that much better, or better at all. Still waiting patiently for the 3rd Dimension to be available for purchase.....they keep pushing it back.
