The new 30mm gun is also smaller and lighter, so the new mounting has a MUCH wider range of motion, making the gun much more aimable and able to cover a much larger area from a given orbit position. And the old 40mm gun was manually fed with 4 round clips, but the new gun has an automatic dual feed system with a much higher rate of fire AND the ability to switch back and forth between 2 different ammo types. Finally, with the ability now to fire Hellfire and Griffin missiles, the AC-130J can finally deal with air threats like helicopters, many types of drones, and even slow moving planes.
It's like a crazed artillery man was put in charge and told "let's give artillery the ultimate high ground". "😏I know let's put a 105 on board a C-130!!
What you have in "Puff The Magic Dragon" is a "FLYING TANK". Add the A-10 to the mix and it's pretty safe to say, NOTHING on the ground is safe. If you hear their guns firing, it's safe to say that you were not the target............this time.
One of the best stories of troops in contact in Vietnam with an AC130 overhead was the troops telling the 130 to clear the area due to incoming artillery. The 130 reply "we are the artillery." "Oh right stick around then we have some trade for you
They have a narrow window of mission type....but in that narrow window.....they're badass....and they can put a Lott bullets through that little window!
I think of this airplane as a flying tank. If you are a bad guy and you hear this over your head, prepare to meet your maker. Their precision is unmatched. A ground soldier's best friend. These 130 airframes are used by the hurricane hunters. I was taught not to fly in or near storms. These men and women do it on purpose. Unreal................
This plane would not even make it to within 20 miles of the front in Ukraine before it was turned into confetti. As drones and air defenses become widespread, not even stealth aircraft will dare fly over a battlefield.
I am a 100% disabled Veteran and I have an ID card to get on base and the flight line is the first place I go at McCord in Tacoma WA and I have seen a few of these and just sat and staired at it ..what a beautiful sight it is..
most requested will be debatable, the cross of death most likely stands as the most called for, this version pending service life might surpass it but not likely
The Air Operations Center for that Area of Responsibility (AOR)will allocate "xyz" percentage of the days available strike aircraft to Close Air Support (CAS) in the next day's Air Tasking Order (ATO). At this point in time, CAS can range from helicopter gunships all the way to B-52s and B-52s. While A-10s and AC-130s are superior in the CAS realm, it's not often their assigned primary role. Just about anything with the ability for air to ground missions can be so tasked to the mission set. Furthermore, there will be an allocation of aircraft on short alert waiting at their bases should their be a need to launch. When a request goes out for support, the AOC desk in charge of CAS taskings will pull up the systems and identify which aircraft and or weapons are the most appropriate to the scenario. Usually it comes down to response times but it's really about what ordnance is hanging on the rails. Then other components of the AOC start moving to not only deconflict the airspace but also to make sure there's support to the inbound CAS assets, fighters, tankers, etc., if needed. We even have to ensure that ground and naval units aren't pushing artillery and cruise missles through that same airspace. We'll also start movingavailable EW and EA assets into the area so that the enemy c⁴I is as degraded as possible and unable to counter the response package. Most AOCs will also have groups from each service and coalition partner's services to run checks on the ground truth to avoid any potential blue on blue. Only if it really comes down to the wire will aircraft not assigned to CAS on the days ATO would a strike on a target be cancelled and retasked to the CAS role. There is a built in priority on targets and the strike packages assigned to them. The other possibility of gaining extra CAS is if a strike packages is unable to accomplish the strike and or has ordnance remaining. The call out will go to any aircraft with ordnance. Of course it needs to be the appropriate ordnance as you wouldn't want 70k pounds worth of MK-84s carpet bombing an enemy already in close contact. When the days air battle and strike packages are in full flow, it's not all that easy nor often quick to get CAS assets into a grid square, especially when other combat operations are in close proximity to where you need CAS.
It's always a bit funny to hear a citizen from a disarmed populace call armaments designed to effectively overwhelm, "insane". Do they expect us to wear our bright team colors, stand facing each other, fire and hope for the best? I thought we taught them the folly of that. Show me a leader who wants to "play fair" and you show me a loser in war.
The C130 airframe is not designed to accept jet engines. The somewhat slower speed of its four turboprop engines afford the gunship much longer loitering time over its targets, and improved accuracy of its various weapons
Airliner engines specifically are built for efficiency within the flight envelope of an airliner. They're not durable enough for a forward operating aircraft. There's also a difference in thrust when comparing these engines a lot like cars. Jets are more high rpm/high horsepower engines, while turbo-props/piston-props are more like high torque truck engines. Yes, they're slower, but they've actually got a lot more power in that slower range. The engines on the C/AC-130's are actually jet turbines that drive the props, they are more efficient than jet engines. Even more efficient than airliner jets.
I was a gunner on the U model. It was a lot of fun.

Truly badass, if only we had the funding to have this sort of capability

And they call us chair force lol come get some then. USAF!!!! Aim High, Fly, Fight, Win. We also own the night.

Great video! Just subscribed!
Thank you 🙏
No one will fuck with us older brother

Would love us to have a400m equivalent.. what a plane ** auto correct hell !
The MOD Would never buy it
@mothmagic1 it's so unusual, ps plane* auto correct
Notice that they barely move when they fire the cannon.

If you ever play call of duty modern warfare 2 and 3 campaign, you will understand
A FLYING TANK With no Armor

Don't the Chaps across the pond have their own gunships ???
What if they put commercial airliner jets on the 130..?
If they did the 130 would be limited to pave runways. The best thing about the 130 is it can land and take off from pretty much any kind of runways
The C130 airframe is not designed to accept jet engines. The somewhat slower speed of its four turboprop engines afford the gunship much longer loitering time over its targets, and improved accuracy of its various weapons
Then it would be called a C-17 Globemaster and it's bigger brother would be the C-5 Galaxy...that you can load like 3 C-130's in !

So…it’s obvious you’ve never played COD then? lol.
