It's built on an articulated dump truck chassis. An articulated dump truck is basically a tractor permanently coupled to a trailer, where the steering axle has been replaced with hydraulics that turn the joint between tractor and trailer.
So the Archer is basically the world's most heavily armed tractor.
There is something profoundly poetic about this.
Certainly when it's a state-of-the-art Western weapon fighting Russia.
Sweden sees temperatures from -40C to 35C and the Archer is built to manage those conditions. Sweden is also heavily forested and has a lot of undeveloped land, which our systems are also built to tackle. I think that makes the Archer very versatile and a tool that can fit many different areas and armies.

We literally had -35C the first field exercise we had when I was in the army after we had gotten our Cv90's.
We had to start the engines every 2 hours and run it for a few minutes. I don't think that was truly needed as the vehicle has diesel heaters that can warm up the engine and interior.
@@AdurianJ it's for the batteries, the non-engine heaters draw battery power to ignite the diesel and they don't run the generator to recharge the batteries while running heat.
"Fun" Fact: Archer has also an anti tank mode meaning it can fire dricetly at ground targets like tanks.
Basically it can fire like an old Battleship main gun during a full broadside against a close combat target.
Means i can do Mobile Coastal artillery to if needed.

The Archer system can be put on anything - To further show that point, BAE is testing the RMMV HX as a carrier for Archer systems.
20 years ago when this was coming into the army in Sweden we were taught the importance of not beeing spoted. Because anything stationary spoted within 30km of this thing will be destroyed. And that is a big hassle for the logistics company. It means the logistics more or less cant set up within 30 km of the contact line, and that is far for moving fuel food and ammo. Especially when the infrastructure is beeing bombarded.
Nice to see Archer on the Volvo CE dumper chassis. Sweden has chosen to buy more Archer, but on the MANN chassis, which is good for on-road, but as soon as you need to go off-road, you`re buggered. A shame!

Regarding the speed; It can send 3 rounds that hits the target simultaniously (MRSI), and get away from the firing position before the rounds hits the target.
If they want to risk the delay they can shoot 4-6 rounds (depending on distance) that impact simultaniously.
Deployment takes 20 seconds. A burst of 3 rounds take 20 seconds. Getting out of action takes 20 seconds. So the whole firing process for these "shoot and scot" mission takes about 60 seconds, and they can do 7 such mission on one magazine.
If one want to deploy, do 6 MRSI rounds and then scot it will take around 80 seconds and the impact of the 6 rounds will be around 20 seconds before it has been able to scot and be on it's way to a new position.
If one want to do barrage and empty the whole magazine it can be done in 3 minutes.
It takes about 10 minutes to reload the magazine (even for conscripts), and that is supposed to be done at another location where the Archer meets up with a dedicated amunition truck to reload.
If one want to do continued firing from a single fire position (despite that this is not what it's built for) it can shoot 54 rounds in 35 minutes. There are other systems that are quicker then that when it comes to continued firing over time, however that is not what the Archer is built for and it's strength is in it's "shoot and scot" ability.
That is twice the case in Sweden with it's deep hilly forests with a myriand of roads in a huge network used by the timbertrucks in forest industry. They give easy access to a myriad of new fire positions.
With that said this has no problem going straight off road. It has articulated steering and it is basically built like a lumber harvester and they have no problem making their own way straight through the bush.
"Sniper Artillery" is actually a pretty darn accurate and to the point description.
You don’t stay around to correct fire. You fire a triple salvo in different trajectories and move on even before the three grenades hit the same spot simultaneously.
Depends on the tactical situation and the accuracy of availiable target and battery positioning data.

Don't know if it has reached the field yet but using the MRSI system there where testing of shockwave compounding especially with brithish proximity fuses but I belive you need at least three units to get good effect on target. Basically crumples box style bridges and the like as if it was a empty soda can.
Finns have followed closely what happens in western neighbour and in Ukraine, so Patria has been building their version of 155K98 integrated to 8x8 Sisu truck and should start testing this year.
Not new idea and not much info about it at this point, but shoot&scoot war has made it more interesting than before. Project was first introduced 2015, but at that time Finland decided to buy K9's instead of developing own Archer-type system.
On the other hand, Finnish mortar systems are the most high tech beasts on land or sea atm.

Iirc, no, but it does have a very advanced ballistics computer, comms and positioning system. Idk if it's guided ammo is sending any in-flight positioning data back to the howitzer.
What I do know that doctrinally in Swedish service, there's always supposed to be an ARTHUR counter battery radar unit deployed in the same operational area.
I wonder how it stacks up to the PZH2000 in cost.
The Netherlands could use some flexible artillery again.
Probably 24 systems to form two battalions in the next 5 years (and possibly 12 more after a few years te create a shadow battalion in storage)
We lease some PHZ2000 from Germany which have excellent precision but those are expensive to operate. And those have not performed outstanding in Ukraine
Acording to google a PHZ2000 goes for around €17 million (2022). While a Archer goes for less than 1/4th thee price at 4.140.000 Euro per piece. So you would get 48 archers for every 12 PHZ2000. That's a Great difference.

I know sweden has more weapon systems that haven't been showed to the public. They are so called surprise weapons to deploy if we are invaded. With a small army bodycount we depend on smart weapon systems. Its all very good calculated.
