  • The 1992 US Open final, one the best matches I have seen Monica play. Coming from losing the last 3 final matches she had just played in, but to take note, she was trying to stop her grunting. I believe Monica without her grunt takes away from her game. So in this final she was back to her old self, loud and sassy. I had watched this match so many times on my VHS the tape broke, so the other day after 20+ years of being in a box I thought I would do a patch job and it worked. I think the quality of the vid is great, I hope you enjoy it!!
    Go MONICA

OMFG I've been waiting for a full version of this for years! This is my favourite Monica match, and I like seeing ASV lose. IMO

monica was smthing special..now ostapenko won her 1 st slam at 20 age, that itself sounds so young in todays stds.. n seles won 8 slams , befpre she completed teenage.. before she was halted unnaturally.. 8 slams at teenage.. can u find anyone even near that today? really unbelievable..

And history altered, thanks to Graf's pawn, Gunther Parche.

Just watching Monica here and then watched her match with Venus Williams in 2002 ...although they hit harder ten years later with the advance in strings/racquets and the game itself she is so much quicker here in 92 with her movement and foot work and her timing was amazing ..she looks great here in 92 and six months later she was already much better server and added pace to her forehand..that match in 2002 was not a good one for Monica as she could not keep up to the pace of Venus shots ..would love to see this Monica against a 2002 Venus...it’s amazing what confidence will do to toot game Monica had it here in 92 but lacked it at the us open 2002..,

A background to this match: It was delayed for hours because of the marathon match between Edberg and Chang. It may partly explain why Arantxa started so slowly. Arantxa actually had two coaches at this point and apparently there had been some disagreement between them about how this match should be played. One wanted her to play aggressively, the other wanted her to play a more less risky strategy. It's maybe why Arantxa looked confused at times about how to tackle Monica. Arantxa had her first win over Monica a couple of weeks before in Canada - it probably made Monica more determined and maybe added to the pressure on Arantxa. Monica herself had had something of a drought in the previous months and hadn't won a tournament since the French Open. She had lost to Graf at Wimbledon, Navratilova in Los Angeles and Arantxa in Canada. Monica had also been ill throughout the US Open but seemed to have recovered somewhat by this match. I suspect if this match had been played a few years later, Arantxa would have played a much more disciplined match, although Monica would always be a very tough match up for her.

I dont know why Aranxta didnt ever fix her forehand. No power and so many unforced errors. She must have hit atleast 30 unforced errors off the forehand this match even though she was barely trying to do anything with it. She should have fired a forehand coach, she could have won many more slams if she did.
