  • Hi All, I know it's been a while since I last uploaded, so I thought I would upload this. I really liked watching the entire video, just not Monica Seles, but mind you LOVED seeing her at her best ;)

This was a year that forced the great champions to recognize that it was time to walk away- they desired more time at the top but heck how do you know it’s over until any doubt about the end is clear . You haven’t had enough until you’ve had enough. Martina and Jimmy reached end of the road when capturing that chance to win a slam again . Martina would say her good- bye at Wimbledon in 94 almost beating Martinez for a tenth title . Jimmy having that 91 run is better than his 5 open titles combined. At 39 reaching the semis when he had not reached Sf in a slam in 6 years . He got a taste of the top another time and we were happier for him than perhaps he was . That day we all felt like we had hope to conquer once again .

Awesome video! Thank you! Funny how so many felt Monica Seles needed to "reassert" herself. She was clearly head and shoulders above the other players at this time.

You are so right. Amazing how Arantxa is lauded for making the set scores "respectable." Monica could have easily won 6-1, 6-1. And this is the one who beat Graf in straight sets.

Monica had been in a very dry patch and hadn't won a tournament for 14 weeks - the longest period any women's world #1 had gone without winning a tournament since Martina Navratilova lost her #1 ranking in 1987. In that period, Monica had bad straight set losses to Graf at Wimbledon, Navratilova in Los Angeles and then had her first ever loss to Arantxa Sanchez Vicario at the Canadian Open. She looked very flat and out of sorts. So, yes, she did need to "reassert" herself. It's worth noting that Monica won the US Open in 1992 without ever needing to play her best and was ill throughout the tournament with a very nasty cold. Her main opponents barely showed up, and Arantxa Sanchez Vicario played an awful match in the final. It would have been interesting to see what would have happened if Monica had had to play Capriati, Navratilova or Graf.

I have this video on VHS too. It's really exciting. Do you have the 1991 US Open Highlights video too?

The women's event was such a let down. Capriati and Navratilova barely showed up. Graf was recovering from a shoulder injury and looked like she didn't really want to be there - she made 49 unforced errors (!!) in her quarterfinal loss to Sanchez Vicario. Sabatini was coming off a long lay off and looked lost. Seles never played well the entire fortnight and was badly affected by a nasty cold. Arantxa Sanchez Vicario played an awful, confused match in the final and made 43 (!!) unforced errors in a short match. Such a contrast with the 1991 event.

She played a very odd US Open. Really seemed like she didn't want to be there at all. Very typical of her in 1991 and 1992 seasons.

Your comment is ungracious typical Graf hater.
