Winning 12 of the last 13 games after Date came out playing out of her mind...Monica was amazing!

    Thank youu!!
Date has a game that can bother monica, if she can cut the unforced errors. I remember she made monica had a tough 2nd round game in Australian Open 6 month after this match..

I think the camera needs to go higher. I’m seeing giants playing tennis.

Have none of the Japanese players ever heard of topspin? Seriously a bit of topspin is good even for a flatter ball hitter, both since it gives you some margin of error and net clearance, and it is a lot harder to deal with powerful or well hit shots that also have spin on them then just flat balls that come right in your strike zone.
Date was the best Japanese of the bunch, as she got as high as #4 in the world in 95, but her game would have still benefitted further from spin. She would cut down the sometimes crazy high number of unforced errors, especialy on a day she is a bit off like this match, and her balls would be harder to return or deal with due to some spin.

and watching all of the Japanese players, the Kijimuta sisters, Date, Sugiyama, even Osaka today, NONE of them hit with hardly any spin. It is baffing how consistent it is. It must be how they are coached growing up.
