    19 years later Kimiko (as a 43-year-old) beat Pennetta and Muguruza.
    Pennetta won the USO one year later, Muguruza the FO one year after that.
    That is all we need to know about the “Dark Age“ of the 2010s.

      Ricardo Gigante really? At first, I thought she had a wrist injury as a kid as to why she was so stiff on her forehand and then I remember they said she was a left hander forced to play righty and that explained the weirdness on the forehand. I always marveled and Nadal’s whip forehand because in my mind I associated switching hands with Date.

    Another of several where Gabi had an enormous lead and lost in 3. The most damaging was her loss to Fernandez at the French Open in 1993. She just wasn't mentally as strong/committed, which led to her retirement in 1996. Makes my heart hurt to know she only won 1 Grand Slam with so much incredible talent.

    This is beautiful tennis. The angles and ball spin are wicked. I wonder if it would have even more impact for the viewer if we knew where in the set and overall match each of these points was played. It doesn't show on the screen. I'd like to know. Points are played differently at earlier versus later times during the match. All that notwithstanding, this is a tremendous compilation of superb tennis. Thank you so much for posting!

    • @andrews6341
      @andrews6341 Před 5 lety +1

      Tbh there was no real strategy with Sabatini , it was hit topspin and hope that the other player would miss or mishit. Also even by this time there was Monica Seles and Lindsay Davenport who just blasted the ball. It was a little bit more strategic maybe 10 years before this

    • @carlochapelle9331
      @carlochapelle9331 Před 5 lety +5

      Andrew Scott I beg to differ. When she was winning a lot against top players (1990-1992), Sabatini had an aggressor all court game that was fun to watch. When she was inspired, she employed it to full display. She would chip and charge, hit high then flat or she’d use her topspin backhand to open up the court or step in and hit her favorite topspin backhand down the line for winners. If you could see her two Italian Open final wins against Seles (91 & 92) you’ll see her jerk Seles from side to side then from up and back with her mix of drop shots, angled ground strokes and aggressive net play. Even that 1994 final (Year end Slims) against Davenport, she would slice the ball low and mixed it up well against the big babe Tennis of Lindsay.
      Sabatini had strategy alright. It was her lack of killer instinct and consistent mental toughness that prevented her from competing well day in and out.

      Gaby should of won more the 1 grand final. She has all the shots and has no weaknesses apart from her second serve. Gaby really should of been more agressive with her game as she was brilliant at the net!! I think the 1992 semi-final French open loss to Monica where she was up 4-2 in the 3rd set but lost 6-4 in the third to Monica dinted her confidence as if she had won she would of liked her chances against Steffi having won 8 out of their last 11 meetings including defeating Steffi in Miami in March 92 and in the final at Amelia Island. Then in 1993 losing 10-8 in the third to Fernandez after being 6-1 5-1 up lossed all her confidence. Gaby did gain some confidence in late 1994 and early 1995 where she looked like the Gaby from 1991-92 when the end of season championships in New York and Sydney but losing the match was the final nail in her comeback

      1958mlvc kimoko is a unique player. Her short back swing makes her ground stroke unpredictable because you dont know where she plans to hit it cross court or down the line. You have to guess all the time. At the same time she hits it so flat that players have to be fast in reacting to the ball. Last of all because it's flat she has big margin for errors. Ones she lined up her forehand it's lethal and dangerous. Kimiko is one of the best players because she thrived especially with the top players.

    Another thing I'll add: While Gaby's show of sportsmanship at the end was great considering how she lost this, it also was an indication of her mental resignation from caring and/or being competitive in the game. Graf probably would have given a cursory handshake at the end because she hated to lose, at any time Whereas Gaby was done.

      I totally agree. Gaby was always gracious, but she should have surely won the match. Her fight it seemed had left her and she didn’t have the belief anymore. Same thing vs Conchita at Wimbledon that year. Shows you how critical the mental aspect is.

      Gabriela is a mystery. Sometimes she's like "I could win right now, but I think I'll let my lil' sister win." Yikes, Sabatini had so many losses where she was on the verge of winning. When you consider her talent, she should've achieved more. In some ways, Sanchez Vicario had the career that I thought Sabatini would've had (a handful of grandslam titles, numerous runner up trophies, etc) but I guess Sanchez Vicario was that much more of a determined player than Sabatini and was possibly a harder worker too.

    • @ralphbourgeois5875
      @ralphbourgeois5875 Před 5 lety

      Sabatini is overrated. She isnt as talented as she is potrayed. Even her US Open win was lucky, both Seles and Navratilova lost before she met them (she was slated to have to beat both to make the final, Seles in the quarters, Navratilova in the semis) and Graf was awful in the final.
      Her serve sucks, groundstrokes technically flawed with ridiculously excessive topspin, no big weapons, not a great return of serve, and mediocre mover.
      She might be more talented than Sanchez but that can just mean Sanchez really overachieved, not that Sabatini underachieved. Sanchez also lucked out to peak in the post Seles stabbing period where the whole womens game fell apart in general.

    • @JamesFrew1
      @JamesFrew1 Před 5 lety +2

      Ralph Bourgeois sabatini is not overrated. This assessment is spot on. She should have achieved more indeed, but her serve really hurt her, and she did not seem to have that killer instinct that Sanchez vicario had. Probably because she was more physically gifted and was the greater talent - she just never put in the hard work to win.

      Sabatini did very well, though she had some tough losses. But it's very important to point out that she played during the best era and period in modern tennis of the ladies. The most depth, the most pure talent, various and different styles, power but with tactic and great shot selection, control, finesse, court understanding, suspense and mysterious factor on the court during that era. It began to end after the mid-90s. Gabriela retired before the big regression of the sport, and I think she made a wise decision.

      At this stage of Gaby's career her topspin backhand and forehand, for that matter, had too much air in it. Because of some questionable technical decisions and lack of confidence she started brushing up the back of the ball too much when she hit over the ball. This rendered her ground game pretty passive and relatively ineffective. Her instincts at this point were to slice the majority of her backhands as to at least keep the ball low. She, sadly, was slicing out of necessity.

    • @andrews6341
      @andrews6341 Před 3 lety +1

      She also had no choice , Seles and Capriati forced her to use it , as did Davenport when she came along it was not a choice imo if you hit the ball deep and hard she would not be able to wind up for the BH topspin , and if she did get a chance it would sit mid court which Seles especially would just put away.

    This match is the perfect example of why Sabatini didn’t achieve more in her career (in addition to her French Open match against MJ Fernandez after being up substantially. She didn’t have the killer instinct. She started playing defensively. On her game, Gaby should have been able to beat anyone. Steffi. Monica. Arantxa. But she didn’t because she wilted. It’s like she didn’t feel like putting in the effort. Tennis was a chore for her. At the same time she made it harder for herself. I cannot tell you how many times she’s come up to a mid court ball and instead of putting it away she just looped it right down the middle and mid court. Never made any sense to me. Love her but she needed a mental coach more than a tennis coach. Someone needed to instill in her the killer instincts akin to Navratilova in 1982 and beyond.

    This match highlights the major problem Gabi had throughout her career. She just didn't have a weapon to consistently finish off points. Graf had her serve and forehand. Seles had her groundstrokes and return and Navratilova had her serve and volley attack. But Gabi had to try and induce errors from opponents or just wear them down. I believe it goes some way to explaining why she lost so many matches from winning positions.
