It's been a weird and rough few months for the world as a whole. I wanted to take some time to sit down and check in with all of you in a way I haven't before. More of a one on one, how are you kind of talk. So I decided to start a series that I am calling MatChats, where we sit down and talk about more personal things. Unfortunately the people who we see as those who know what they’re talking about have been wrong about absolutely everything.
There's a great article the BBC published where like 60% of British ppl surveyed said that even if the virus restrictions are lifted and the threat is gone, they would still be reluctant to go outside... I think that resonates quite strongly here

Dogs can be quite scary. But we have to work through it😪 my boyfriend is pro ably getting a dog soon, so there is my forced exposure therapy🙂😨 and also my mum and sister want a cat and is going to get one. And I am even mora afraid of cats... but I know, exposure therapy is necessary and stuff. So guess I am gonna battle lots of anxieties soon. Wish me luck guys😅
I’m afraid of dogs too, it developed when I was 6 at the park. There was this hill that I loved going down using my scooter, one day there was this lady with her dog sitting on a bench near the hill. I started down the hill and just to let you know this hill was so steep and when you went down the hill on wheels you would be going so fast, so I went down the hill feeling the same way you feel on a roller coaster but then I felt a sharp pain in my thigh and fell down off the scooter. I slowly got up and looked around and saw that the lady who was sitting on the benches dog had bit me so hard that I was bleeding rapidly, the woman started apologizing as if that would reduce the immense pain or make this any better, I slowly limped to my dad who was at the top of the hill. He RAN down the hill, struck the fear of god in that lady, snatched me and my scooter, and brought me to the hospital to get 18 stitches, I screamed the loudest when they injected the numbing juice.

Now that I’ve watched this video, I feel very blessed that my only phobia doesn’t effect my daily life, only a few times when swimming at the beach.
This is actually somewhat how some cases of OCD start. The crippling fear of the 0.1% chance of your fears being proven right drives you to do absolutely everything to stop the bad things you think are gonna happen from happening, no matter how absurd the actions are. And it’s common for it to manifest at around age of 18. We need more awareness of these issues because people like Matt go years suffering without being able to put a name to it and get help quicker and it’s sad :(

I’m losing control
Talking about airplanes;
A youtuber called PhlyDaily who plays moslty War Thunder once told a very interesting story of how he may have prevented an airplane crash, in 2015.
In short, he's into aircraft, and he knows that before a flight, the pilot and the ground crew do a check to see if all the plane's control surfaces are good, and from his seat he could see that even though an aileron was stuck at a downwards position, the plane was getting ready for takeoff. After several attemps he convinced the stewardess to talk to the pilot, whom came to ask him what he saw, then looked himself and went to talk to someone else. They ended up having to wait 3 hours while the plane was being repaired.
So sometimes you do have some control
But weirdest thing: if you go watch his video he says he was watching a youtube video when he noticed the aileron.

I had lost so much control in my life that I had to take on so many problems that weren’t mine and it broke me. My therapist told me “care don’t carry” I need to live my life without trying to control everything
Dude, this video was fantastic. It was great to see you open up about this sort of thing.
It's difficult that we can't control what happens to us in life but we sure as heck can control how we react to these things.

Oh man, i can relate. Not as bad as that, but i do feel like my already bad communication skill is getting far worse rn. And im in constant fear of the future, "what if i cant communicate with people?" "If that happened, ill die alone" "if i cant communicate with people, ill never achieve success" and hearing him saying exposure therapy is the best medicine, its kind of inspiring. I'm a victim of overthinking EVERY single thing in my life and I wish I could be more ignorant and the safety bubble was still there to blind me, but trying everything to stop thinking too much ahead or too deep into things. I feel your anxiety Mat Pat.
I may be extremely late but nonetheless this video came to me in a point in my life where I am letting fear control me. I mean granted I've had a couple of near death experiences (I'm 23 btw) but this showed me that I shouldn't be focused on the bad and that I should be grateful for literally every day even if it involves a shitty day at work. So for everyone who says Game theory is for kids and nothing else I say you're not open enough. These kinds of videos help all of us remember that just because you're a content creator doesn't mean you're invincible. Joycon bois for life.

I got in a major car crash as a passenger in november last year, since then I've always been scared of sitting in cars as a passenger, the reason i mention "passenger", is because if i am the driver, if i am in control... i don't think i would be that worried

I totally understand you. I myself have many fears and anxietys and almost all of them are connect to the problem of not having control of the happening. Humans fear unexpected things that can’t be controlled. I hope you will overcome your trauma and I’m sorry that something like that happened to you...
I can totally relate. When I was about 9-10 years old (about 7 years ago ) I got into a serious car accident with my grandpa. He was the biggest role model I have ever had in my life. I honestly don’t want to get into detail but every second was absolutely terrific and terrible. It is almost scarier than a really high up roller coaster derailing. And for me we were in an old Subaru and then we crashed right into the side of a full 18 wheeler. I almost died. And I won’t ever forget that moment when my grandpa left this world and I was so scared so all I do was ask him if we were ok. That’s why I am so afraid of not getting into cars but seeing an 18 wheeler on the highway. What I’m saying is that you are not alone and that I wish I could get over my fear as easily as you did.

I also had been in an incident just last years 2019 when I was with my grandmother going to a plane to have a vacation with my parents then suddenly when we were just about to finish verifying our passport an earthquake just occured I hold my grandmother's hand going to the exit good thing we were very near we all got safe but then back to another flight after that day I got scared of going to a plane (i have had a total of 4 flights)my grandmother left this world after just this year

he’s so brave. He’s making himself vulnerable by telling all of us (one of us could be a bomber) and they could specially plan bombings on him.
7:35 as someone with a phobia of needles I can simplify with this a few years back I was booked to have blood tests and as I’m walking to the medical centre to get it done I actually got completely paralysed I was trying to walk but my body just wasn’t obeying my commands and just kept stopping moving, I ended up not getting the blood taken as while I was sitting in the chair sobbing the nurse tried several times to locate veins in my arm before trying for blood and she ended up telling me she wasn’t going to try as she couldn’t find a suitable vain and because of how terrified I was she didn’t feel comfortable routing around with a needle trying to find one and maybe traumatising me even more.

I just watched this, I know it's two years later, but I just want to say, even though nobody will probably ever see this, that this video helped me overcome my almost crippling self destructive fear of death, which caused me to be terrified of anything that could in almost any circumstances kill me, INCLUDING PLANES. I used to be terrified of planes because my mind is constantly thinking, "it's going to crash, and you're probably going to die." I have only been on a plane twice, when I was a child forced by my parents, across the USA and back again, but now I have the confidence to try and overcome it, all thanks to this video. Thank you, matpat.

I do agree. Let's be all honest; we may think we have control, but we really don't. However, the only thing we do have control over is the ability to control our self, and it is all determined by your own decision and inner strength.

Thank you very much. I needed to hear this to face my fear. I have a fear of failure. There are times that I need to motivate myself to go for a new opportunity and forget about my previous attempts. But... you're expressing how you got the phobia and your rational for it. i'm terrified of spiders, and would go to similar lengths if i had to go through a hands on arachnid convention or such. you're not crazy, just anxious. and maybe a degree of PTSD

I don't think a youtuber has ever been this relatable. I don't have fear of flying, but I do have fear. A fear of medicine. It kinda sucks cuz I have asthma and so I take a lot of medicines. I get nervous every time I take a pill or an inhaler. But in 19 days it will be 1 year since my sister's death. Death from an overdose

Starting to think i was the only one who noticed it welling up in is eyes the tension and anxiety just reliving it.
This is not a knock on him. But that makes him a great actor. He probably do feel that but if he wasn't able to convey it we probably wouldn't catch up on it.
That's part of why I like the guy. He's honest when he has something hard to say and gets on with it.

For plane anxiety, I heard a good line of advice: look at the flight attendants. If they aren't concerned, you shouldn't be concerned. Obviously, this doesn't prevent terror attacks, but it works great for like turbulence and stuff.
For any anxiety, accept death as inevitable. Once you accept death, there is very little that will cause you anxiety. That's not to say to live it up like a daredevil though lmao but death is absolutely a certainty for everyone. There are an infinite different scenarios in which can cause your death. It's a wasted endeavor to stress about everything, just take care of yourself to the best of your ability and let go of the variables that are outside of your control.
