    More gouache video's please. It is just such a strange beast. Loved watching you work. Feel the same way about gouache. When it works, it really works and when it doesn't oh my oh my...:) Not giving up. But getting frustrated. A bit of help would be more then welcome. Also how to put gouache paint in a palette. Mine crack like crazy even with added honey to them. But maybe it is just the brand I use (Talens). Thanks for sharing! And the cloudy second eye is def my favorit. Your color use is so nice.

    • @arleebean
      @arleebean  Před 6 lety +4

      Thanks so much for your kind words!! ♥ I've found that my Talens gouache (I only have one tube) cracks more than, say, my M Graham gouache. They seem to just be a bit different. I'll definitely talk more about gouache as I continue to learn. We can learn together! :D

    • @karahnovak8122
      @karahnovak8122 Před 6 lety +1

      arleebean would you recommend talens? I’ve heard they’re good! I’ve only used Gouache a few times before with really cheap paints and want to get into it more. I was considering getting Talens just because I could get more for my money that way. $40 for 8 20ml tubes? That definitely would work better for me! From my research I found out the binder was different and that’s why they’re a bit different from most other gouache. Would you say they’re pretty decent quality though? For someone starting out?

    • @Zoomfreaky
      @Zoomfreaky Před 6 lety +1

      Talens is fine, just not for using in palettes. It cracks...bad. If you are not sure if you'll like gouache, I would recommend to buy smaller tubes from the more expensive paints like WN or M.Graham. Talens is considered a studentgrade paint and it does make a big difference...especially in gouache. The tactile feel of WN is so much better then Talens (to me). Don't get me wrong, I have about 14 colors of Talens and I like them. WN just feels better. You decide...:)

    One and two, I am a gouache painter and you should squirt your pan with a water pump and let the water sit on the paint for a couple of minutes to reactivate your paints. That method always seems to work out for me

    • @arleebean
      @arleebean  Před 6 lety +2

      Yes, I've been using an eyedropper on my gouache to reactivate them, and that seems to be going really well! Thank you ♥

    I have used M Graham Gouache for about 8 months now and I haven't had any issues with it cracking and falling out of the half pans when it dries completely. I live in a super dry climate so would not be overly stressed about it. If your used to watercolor, Gouache can be tricky medium to transition too. I struggle with not being able to glaze like i could in Watercolor but the more i regularly use it the more I appreciate it for its unique qualities. Great work with the eye studies!

      arleebean I don't know man. I think gouache's properties being so similar yet so different from other more familiar mediums makes it all the more mysterious, confusing, sometimes frustrating, but also beautiful & interesting! Wonderful demo! I subbed or the gouache. I am an x-oil painter of 40+ years and can't use it anymore and I so get what you mean by "brain" not working. Mine still works like an oil painter so watercolor was just too hard for me... thus gouache... well unless I use white gouche to work dark-to-light but what's the point of watercolor struggles then. I use MGraham as I don't like the fillers in other.. just pure pigments for me as its closest to oils. I like the last eye best as I tend to do much more blending so tend to like that look better but I think they're all great actually. Thanks again... you're doing great with the medium but it does take practice, practice, practice to get the brain to shift. Edit: btw, one of the beauties of oils and gouache is you never have to settle for less than what you intend. Its so easy to rework opaque work. If I had any tip for you it would be to do more mixing on your paper and less on the palette. Thanks again. I almost get giddy when I see a gouache demo come up.... especially ones done like paintings and not just coloring book approach blocks of mixed color. I think watercolorists don't realize how much mixing is done on the ground in opaque mediums.

    I really like it that u use other colours then flesh colours for the eyes (like blues an purples) I always wanted to try that but i never know what colour i should put where. Do you have any tips for that?

    • @jklroxmysox111
      @jklroxmysox111 Před 6 lety +2

      For shadows use blue and for the deepest shadows use dark purples. Use yellows for highlights, reds/pinks for midtones, and occasionally greens for certain areas (like under the eyes a bit maybe, because under-eyes often have a purple or greenish slight hue to them, same for backs of hands or anywhere else where there is a lot of veins close to the skin). I never really use orange personally unless the whole piece is super warm because it often comes out looking like you meant to make a peachy skin tone and you just mixed wrong.
