    Cheep paints give you the freedom to really just use it. I am very aware of the money I spend and if I have something super nice I can’t use it unless it’s for something important. So studying with less expensive paints can really give you the freedom to understand your personal techniques without breaking the bank.

    I actually like the "chalky" texture of the brush strokes, I think it may work better in some subject matter than others, but with the portrait it gives it an interesting texture

  • @bobhalowell7688
    @bobhalowell7688 Před 5 lety +108

    I have never used gouache, but the review seemed fair. I prefer having lots of pre-mixed colors so I can just paint without the hassle. Watercolors are produced by grinding pigments into chalks. The more refined the milling process, the less granulation in the washes. I have read that brush strokes are visible in some of the historical masterpiece watercolor paintings. Maybe some chalkiness in the painting is actually painting like the masters? If you limit yourself to a few expensive single pigment primary colors; you are going to go through a few colors faster, mix too little to finish a section, mix too much and waste paint, or mix incorrectly until you find the right color value you are searching for. Anyway, the reviewer artist made some very professional looking paintings in the video with Arteza gouache. Nice work!

    • @Redsammeh
      @Redsammeh Před 4 lety +10

      Chalkiness is usually due to excess cheap fillers/binders that bulk up the paint instead of more pigments

    Thank you for letting us know that there are a total of only 18 pigments used in the set because I currently have the 24ct one, and I wanted this 60ct one, however this makes me think twice abt that and be more motivated to mix my own colors.💕

    Arteza sent me their 60 tube gouache set to review on Instagram, so I loved watching this video and hearing your thoughts about it! From what I’ve done so far, which was swatches of all of the tubes and a few practice sketches, I totally agree with everything you have to say.
    Holbein artists gouache is the only brand I’ve ever used, so I’m not familiar with other student grade gouache paints. The Arteza gouache paints work and are not streaky, but they are not as pigmented.
    When it comes to the tube colors and pigments included in the set, they did not include phthalo blue, their Prussian blue is a good substitute, but that just seems like an odd color to leave out!Compared to their smaller sets, the extra tubes in the 60 set aren’t useful to me, they are mostly pre-mixed pastels that are not ideal for mixing, they are just dull. It’s also difficult to get dark colors since so many tubes have white mixed in, it would have been nice to see pre-mixed darks.
    They dry hard, so it’s best used straight from the tube. They are great for practicing and for those who want to start out, since they are fairly inexpensive, or even to those who like pre-mixed colors. Inexpensive supplies definitely make me feel less pressured to make “good” art which is good for experimentation! This is just my first impression, still have to play around a bit and write my “official” review.

    Your kid is adorable. I agree with your conclusion that both have their appeal. Having a large variety does cut down the time to mix. But having a smaller set also helps people with learning color mixing. Great video as always. Muahhugs

  • @dididouglas8659

    Arteza is good paint for learning... its all i currently own but I've tried higher quality gouache before. it serves its purpose the colors are nice and the single pigments (the set i own) mixes really nicely. I haven't noticed too much chalkiness but maybe im used to it. However like Arlee said my biggest peeve about these paints is how much of them you have to use to cover a big area. im doing my csec (gcse) so my pieces have to be a certain size and omg, i feel like im just wasting sooooo much paint.

    Such an amazing video! In both gouache and oil I like to make use of single-pigment colors and also pure transparent colors. I like having the option to mix a color I want without it getting muddy. However, as long as I have those staples I also use convenience colors with multiple pigments. As long as I remember it’s meant to be muddy and don’t try to go back to saturation with it then it’s fine. Half the time I’m trying to make colors MORE muddy anyway. I especially find convenience colors helpful for slightly adjusting puddles of paint I’ve mixed. Like if a skin tone I’ve mixed is too warm I’d rather mix a “sky blue” in than “ultramarine” because sky blue is the same pigment already tempered with white. It’s less likely that I’ll add too much blue. However I would never use sky blue mixed with black if I want a rich dark blue- I would instead get a mid grey.
    Anyway- I’m obsessed with the portraits you’ve done here 😍 I feel like you’re hitting some kind of breakthrough. I can’t wait to see how you return to watercolor after this. I would love to see you do some extreme contrast between very pure transparent watercolor washes (maybe in the shadows) and very built up opaque gouache on the same portrait - ok not telling you what to do I just get excited 😂

    • @arleebean
      @arleebean  Před 5 lety +1

      That's a really excellent point about the sky blue example! I do that with watercolors when using colors like naples yellow or payne's grey. Thank you so much for the insight!! And your ideas are INSPIRING MEEE!!! :D ♥♥♥

    Your little kid is a doll!! What a sweet kind little one 💗
    I enjoyed watching you work very much .. I’ve been playing with the 24 color set and find that it is plenty .. I wanted to try reasonably priced gouache before I go and invest in more expensive artists grade gouache ( I’ve been basically a watercolorist all my life and wasn’t feeling too secure about trying gouache ) .. I think arteza is great value , and great way to play with new medium and just get comfy with it . I finally caved and bought a set of Holbein . They’re a pleasure to work with , but there is that “ thing” of holding back , when you spend bigger bucks on supplies .. that silly “ precious” factor lolol I’m trying to get past that :-))))
    Loved your video , and your work and the voice of your little one at the end;-)))) thanks ... Nora :-)

    Aaaaahhhh I’m so happy to be watching one of your videos!!!!!! These gouache portraits are beautiful!! I feel like for me, the 60 color set *would* be really good, even though they’re reusing pigments that much, because I’ve found it hard to mix gouache colors?? (Just personally) The more I mix, the more water I add incidentally, and the harder it is for me to maintain a thicker color! Maybe that’s just me though......... the reason I stopped using gouache very much was actually because my color selection was super limited, because I bought just a few tubes that were artist quality with the intention of mixing them, and then they just didn’t work great together..... 🤔🤷🏻‍♀️ This is definitely a set I’ve been looking at to give me more variety to go along with what I already own, so I’m really glad to hear your take on it ☺️😄💞

    I've always thought that "Arteza" made the most sense if it's pronounced as close to "artisan" as possible. So, that's what I do, at least in my head! ^^
    I enjoyed this review. I have a pretty limited storage space (one corner of my apartment, tucked behind the table which we also eat at and which is already basically in the living room!) so I'm all about a small number of paints that I can mix myself. Maybe, one day, when we live somewhere larger the larger sets will have a place in my life, but for right now I try to build my stash slowly and with a lot of mindfulness about what mixes I can do myself. ^^

    I really enjoy Arteza Gouache. I have the 24 set. I really hope their colors will soon be available for individual purchase. I mix my white m graham gouache with the arteza and I haven't had so much of the chalkiness you speak of.

      Ah, I do the same with my white gouache in most cases! For these pieces, I wanted to see what the Arteza gouache could do on it's own. That's a great tip!

    I got a 24 color set on sale some time ago and I find it to be more than enough. And I say this as someone who's a bit lazy when it comes to mixing colors :p

    This is amazing! Can you tell me high level what your set up looks like? For example, your easel? Thanks!

    I have the Arteza 60 set of watercolors and the 24 set of gouache. The watercolors are also very chalky and most are semi transparent and opaque already, so I work with them with the gouache. I essentially have myself another 60 set of semi-premixed gouache colors.
