  • An out of control Highland wildfire heads directly towards us and threatens to destroy our home, belongings and livelihoods. Thanks to the emergency services we managed to capture this dangerous wildfire from the moment it began and over the following 24-hours as it wreaked havoc and destruction across an area of Highland Scotland.

I have the utmost respect for them. He was on many a brush fire in arid Southern California, and he had many stories of fires like this. Glad you’re safe.

As a retired Fire Officer I have been to many of these moorland fires. I have also experienced huge fires close to my houses in France and Costa del Sol, Spain where fire fighting planes and helicopters were used to back up the efforts of firefighters.
The work is very tiring. The fire can create its own wind as it sucks oxygen into its centre, making fire spread unpredictable and therefor dangerous.
Great drone footage though. I hope you will give the fire service a copy.
It is amazing how quickly regrowth begins. There may have been some losses of small mammals and snakes but that is unfortunately the tragic part of this particular fire.
Stay safe, check the batteries in your smoke alarms.

Ugh! Wildfires are the number 1 risk to life and property here in interior Alaska. At least you don’t have 80 foot spruce trees that can ignite in seconds and become a torch. But you are right. These fires are great for the ecosystem. New growth holds homes and food for a far greater variety of wildlife . Reminds me that I should cut more of the big spruce around my cabin

but they are so lovely. Fire in the wood stove is better than fire licking at the house logs. Glad you and friends are OK and safe!

Dear Shaun and Collin, what a blessing that you both and your neighbors are all well. I was surprised that no water tanks or fire retardant weren’t used by aircrafts in the morning. Fire is a wonderful way of nature to clear old forest floor, but not when it’s so close to people, animals and structures. I’m not sure if you can, but you should sow some wildflowers or any other plants, trees that can cover some the ground before the rains start. Here in California we have wildfires every year, and this year will be a bad one ; the rain starts in the fall and the mud starts flowing. Always keep an emergency supply in your car, and go over your scape route. We place markers on our most precious items in order to grab ( if one has time) and take in case of an evacuation. May you and your neighbors be blessed, and that you never have to experience any other wildfires. Blessings

Your (fire services) have an interesting way of attacking wildfire. I worked for the US Forest Service fighting fires on what we call a Hot Shot Crew for many years, many years ago. I'm not saying it doesn't happen but I have never seen a leaf blower used here in the US. Also we would have never said "Oh it's out and left". Our hand crews (several hundred in most cases) would have been on the fire for many hours if not days doing mop up. We would also have had bull dozers, helicopters and water/retardant dropping aircraft (during the day) support. I live in N. California, we take ever the smallest fires seriously. As you found out they are very unpredictable and HAVE to be taken seriously.

Living in Australia and well versed with fires, I was very concerned when I saw the title of this weeks vlog. So glad no one lost their homes and I am hoping there wasn't any damage to property. Seems like the larger wildlife managed to escape, though one never knows how many small creatures are killed in a fire.
I have been in your position and like your neighbour have had the cars packed ready to go and the hose out spraying the house and garden as much as I could, very scary situation.
I am wondering about water bombers in Scotland. Do you know if the Govt has any plans to get some now that wildfire is becoming more prevalent. I am presuming they aren't in use as yet, but it seems to me that they really need to look into purchasing a couple in the next year or so as wildfires seem to be happening quite frequently now days.
Really happy to see you are both ok and your property was spared. I hope all your neighbours and their properties are ok as well. Thanks for the vlog. Cheers.

Hallo from Munich, Bavaria! I discovered your vlog only a few days ago and I'm absolutely loving it, have binge watching it ever since! Your videos from the narrowboat are mere poetry and meditation, good for the soul, thank you very much indeed for that!!🙌
As for your new life in Scotland I wish your all the best and luck and happiness.
I'm am glad, that in this scary fire nobody get hurt!🙏
I'm wondering how you can protect your life, your animals and property in the future. It seems, that these fires happen quite regularly?. In Bavaria the farmhouses in remote areas are obliged to have their own "fire pond", this is a bassin (often made of concrete, like a swimmingpool) which has always be filled with water, so that the fireworkers have a water reservoir on location. Don't know, if this makes sense in your region...
Please keep your wonderful work up, again all the best, love, Claudia 💓

Having worked around wildfires all over the US and Canada you start to learn a few things. 1, Fire will build it own weather/wind and just like water it will take the path it finds more suited for it. 2. Anytime of year is wildfire season. 3. get with your neighbors and the Fire fighters to see what you can do to make safer place around your homes. 4.Also think about putting together a canteen to serve the firefighters (water/Gatoraid, energy bars/snacks) 5. Make a plan to escape from the area when told to leave (important papers, dog food, meds, clothes ect)

Here in BC in the Interior we get ferocious wild fires. Last year we lost the town of Lytton and several other small villages. I have 4 or 5 friends who live in that area and they were all evacuated. For awhile there was no way out as the fires swept across the highways. So I understand how terrifying this could be. A few good rains will help settle and clear the ash and , you are right, it will regrow greener than ever. Mother Nature has a way with her doesn't she. The same orange glow in the middle of the night. the forest was mostly pine and when the resin is flowing it burns really well. Still it must have been scary as the flames crept nearer, the noise and the smell. As long as you're ok. The land will recover, fresher and greener. Nice to see you both settling in nicely.

We lost our house in the Paradise Camp fire in California in 2018. It was good that you had hoses, but you should wet down your property and roof to prevent the embers from catching. Put a sprinkler on your roof and run it if embers are coming your way. The fire that got us was burning an acre per second because of the wind. Stay safe. It won’t be the last time but you can do things to help.

Just catching up on some videos so I've only just found this one. What a well put-together video - very professionally done. Never panicky (although you might have felt it!), it managed to convey the danger as well as the professionalism and dedication of the local fire service, most of whom will be part time / volunteers due to the remoteness of the area. So glad you and all your neighbours came away from that with your properties still standing - it could so easily have been a different story. Wild fires are sadly common up here (I'm near Inverness), and many of them are started by visitors/campers. We welcome our visitors, and the majority understand the 'rules' of wild camping, but there are a minority that we wish would show more respect and care for how easily a whole hillside can go up. All it takes is one discarded cigarette chucked out of a car window, or a campfire not properly built/extinguished, and lives and livelihoods are gone and wildlife burned alive...

Considering how scared you probably were with that fire raging all around you, your filming of it was Fantastic and your control of the drone in all that smoke was fabulous - Extremely well done. Stay safe Guys, and please give Otis a big hug from me, thanks.

The upside was the coming together of neighbours to help and support each other. You know now you will always be able to call for help even though you live in an isolated area. In these situations community means everything. Country neighbours don’t impose but are always there for you. I left a bush fire area as I found it too stressful after 18 years of worry every summer. Last year the house of my dreams burned to the ground, it still had a profound effect on me even though I left it some time ago. You are safe now and have had an invaluable experience. Everything you do from now on will have a keep safe from fire consideration. The hills will bloom and heal the land, the bees and chooks will be profoundly happy as will you three watching things come back to life. Stay safe, love you guys💗💗💗

WOW!! After the post earlier this week on facebook I was expecting an interesting one this week, but seriously guys that was amazing. You covered the fire from all angles, personal, community, wildlife, aftermath and recovery afterwards and the footage was amazing. So glad you and the neighbours are ok, and as you say the landscape will recover, probably better and fresher than before. Just a shame it had to be such a worrying night. Probably the best video I have seen on CZcams, Well done.

Never a dull moment with the three of you. As a resident of dry Southern California, I can confirm that the hills will turn green quickly as soon as the rains arrive. I’m so glad you’re all ok, and I love that, in all the chaos, you’ve bonded with your neighbors. ❀

Looks like its time to buy the fire department a couple nice bottles. Glad everything is okay. Some plants need to be burnt to grow like long leaf yellow pine which won't turn from a clump of leaves that looks like a weed into a tree until its burnt. Great video!

I enjoy your company and travelling with you. Thanks.
The Australian experience shows that you should inspect the hot area, after the fire trucks leave, and put out any hot spots.

I am so glad you and your neighbors are safe and sound. When I was a fireman those were the worst types of fires to fight, they will sometimes burn underground and appear to be out only to flare up again and the winds will change direction due to radiational heating and cooling with the sun. Kudos to checking with the fire service on the drone flying!! I knew you were wicked smart!!!!

As a West Australian we live with this danger every summer. In 2019 we had to leave our home with some of our possessions during a fire that got within 200 metre, so we understand how terrifying the position you were in. Glad to see you lost no infrastructure and neither of you were hurt.

I’m very happy to see that you came through this trial unscathed. You were very smart to get your hose pipe out & worked with your neighbors to protect your property. Part of living in a rural area is practicing self-reliance & y’all did a great job of working together.
You shouldn’t feel guilty. If the fire is stopped at your property then it can’t move on to your neighbor’s property. Great job working together. Cheers!

Hi guys it's been awhile since I've been in contact but after my specialist said I was in remission and go out and enjoy life . I did ,I bought a new motorbike ,I've only had it a few months and blow me down that bloody big C came back . I'm waiting on when I can resume treatment but with my immune still knackerd from the last round it's too risky to have go into hospital as the last chemo knocked off my immune system .
I've obviously not been in the mood to be watching my dear far away friends enjoying themselves not alone moving off the water and onto dry land . I will catch up with your land base adventures and I will tell you you will have them with goats .
Take care stay safe Mal in Australia

Thank you for all of the videos and explanations. It is terrifying, and glad you and your newfound community are safe. Back about 26 years ago, our cabin in Montana was almost burned in a fire. 28 of our 60 cabins were destroyed. Which is next to Yellowstone National Park in Alpine, Montana, US. Also, I was in Yellowstone National Park. I was there before and after the 1989 fire. So I have been around the fire a few times. I will say this, my Mom always waters everything around the cabin. So, I would say invest in a watering system!

Yeah, boats smashing through your window, hire boats hitting you, boats with roaring engines and generators pumping out smoke and fumes, drunks jumping on your roof, kids throwing bricks and kicking your windows, diesel spills poisoning the water, homophonic viewers threatening to burn you alive while you sleep and to kill your pets
I’d rather take my chances with the odd fire every couple of decades đŸ‘đŸ»
