I am a truck driver from the United States,I live in Alabama but drive a truck.I haul flooring to Phoenix Arizona, and refrigerated produce back to the south east .I love the channel and look forward to Friday's,sometime I schedule my break so I can watch it.
My dream is to come there and rent a hire boat for a couple weeks.I'm saving my pennies now! Can't wait,it's be awesome to cross paths with you guys.
Enjoy! x
Me too but I live in Maine.
I had never realized just how much Collin prides himself on his photography. This video proves he has a right to be proud. Great job!!!
Thank you so much! x
I think the thing that sums up this video is when Colin asked Shaun "if you could have three things back from the house on the boat, what would you have back?" and Shaun couldn't actually come up with anything. I look around my house and garage at all the clutter and stuff and the concept of simplifying and finding that "sense of what makes you happy just change" that Colin talks of. I guess what it comes down to is actually taking that brave step! For me, in a country with no such canal network the options are a "tiny home" or mobile home such as a camper or converted bus/truck etc... or just downsizing the home and getting rid of stored stuff that is not needed. A fantastic piece of real thought provoking content! Cheers lads!
Glad we reached you đđ»
Being a poor American trapped in a land bereft of narrowboats, you two bring joy and happiness to my miserable existence. Also the drone shots are fantastic!
You could always take a narrowboat vacation đâ€ïž
@@lynj-c9153 Is that a channel name, because I can't find it? I see a few videos with similar titles, but no channel.
Come to the UK
@James Forehan I think I must have been replying to a comment which has since been deleted.
Brilliant as usual!! You two are the living embodiment of successful narrowboat living. You have a sense of humour (classic British ribald style) and a passionate interest in what life has to offer. You don't sugarcoat the problems and each person has to make the decision based on their life and aims. I enjoy our weekly meetings and look forward to next week. Cherish each other -life is short, Stay well,
John, Ontario, Canada.
Thanks so much, John đđ»đ
love there dry humor
Colin and Shaun you are definitely the gold standard of narrowboat vlogs, with your honest fun take on life and the history of each canal you travel on it is all brilliant, and very absorbing to watch. Carry on floating guys âcause we all love watching you. Big cuddle and kisses for Otis. x x x x
Thank you SOOOOOOO much, Janis!
Just gobsmacked at the variety and quality of unique shots you put together in this vlog. The care and creativity is off the charts!
Thanks so much, Erin đđ»đ
I totally agree.
This man has talent for sure.
@@sheepdog1102, fun fact! Metz was my maiden name. I donât hear it very often!
I was about to say something similar, but no where near as eloquent. đ The first thought that went through my head was "Man! This guy is getting good!".
My late husband and I lived on our boat for seven and a half years, being continual cruisers. Only back on the bank because of serious illness. I miss the community, when husband was first diagnosed and taken into St Mary's Hospital at Paddington we were able to Moor in the basin for months. So many boaters offering help, emptying the toilet cassette, disposing of rubbish offering to get shopping and many other things. I would not have been able to stay by the hospital without all their assistance. Plus British Waterways staff, I was so đ
Here in The U.S.A. We donât have canals that are all over the country. We do have many rivers and waterways but nothing like the canals in The UK. If we did have those types of canals, Iâd sell everything in a nanosecond and invest in a narrow boat. Of course we can always move to the UK. I admire and envy you. Keep the videos coming.
Same feelings here in Pennsylvania. Houses are just so big. Seems like nothing smaller than 1,500 square feet. Most new houses around here are over 2,200 square feet.
You'd love it! x
We do have Lake Michigan here in Chicago which is like a fresh water inland ocean. My husband and I go sailing with our cousins in a 20â sail boat but Iâd much prefer the intimacy of canals. I love learning about culture and history so I enjoy your narrations about the villages, pubs, bridges etc.
There's a few things in life that I get really excited about....finding there's a Malteaser in the bag when I thought it was empty, finding the perfect parking spot, listening to the rain on the roof of the camper, getting my parcel delivered and a CZcams notification that Narrowboat Silver Fox has a new video đ
Haha! That lost Malteser đ
@@FoxesAfloat that's why it's first on the list đ
I remember getting a box of dark chocolate maltesers (hard to find!) for a secret santa and it made me happy for at least a week. I was easily pleased back then.
I've just stumbled upon this site, and so glad I have. My Wife and I are Australian, 69 and 70. About 15 years ago, we were backpacking/cycling through Bath, along the canal, we were invited to experience a small trip, from lock to lock, by a narrow boat family. They got their teen age children to wheel our bicycles, with our backpacks, everything we owned, clothes, passports and all, to the next lock gate. We were invited into their narrow Boat Home. Goodness me, what we saw utterly Astounded us!. Within seconds upon entering their Boat, their Home, seeing what what we saw, we realised that to describe their Home as Stunning, was completely inadequate! Such beauty, taste, style and elegance!. To this day, August 21, 2021, we have never seen or experienced anything to equal what we saw and experienced that very sunny, very beautiful, and very British afternoon.
WOW! Sounds like you had an awesome day xx
To quote the ever so wise Ferris Bueller..."Life moves pretty fast. If you donât stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it." Glad you guys slowed down and are enjoying life. Take care.

I used to watch Crackerjack, now i watch Foxes Afloat. So facinating
Your "Islands in the stream" story reminded me of something. When my partner and I got married we went on a caravan trip. On our first night married we were in bed doing what newly weds do, and just as we were reaching the vital moment a touring brass band on a neighboring site burst into life playing, "The last post"! It was so funny.
OMG! đ€Ł
I LOVED this vlog!! I never get tired of watching your adventures. The footage was amazing. Colin, you have an extraordinary eye for both photographing and editing. Loved the nature segment. Love you both!! Thank you for all the hard work you do to bring us along on your journey.

Colin..... Iâm sitting here, watching 2 of my favorite guys (that would be you two!)... and all I hear are lawnmowers. I canât handle the sound of Lawnmowing and being itâs been rather rainy here, itâs constant!!! Iâm screaming inside. This rather nice person is mentally swearing like a truck driver!! Motorcycles, incessant dog barking ( and I â€ïž dogs!!) and loud music where all you can hear is the thumping of the bass..... these are a few of my NON favorite things!! I know you get this and I just needed to vent to someone who wouldnât think I was being an old bee-itch! Thank goodness for your amazing vlogs that keep me sane! đđđđ

Noise cancelling earphones or getting away. They're the only two tricks I find work in situations like that.
When you mentioned storing your stuff at a friend/family members house, it made me think of an old mate of mine. In his early 30's, and entirely out of the blue, he was issued divorce papers, and needed to find somewhere to live. After "sofa surfing" for almost a year (and after the money grabbing ex had finally taken her pound of flesh), he decided he wanted a "Cheap" place to live. Static caravans have a strong "Life didn't go as planned" stigma attached, and just living full time in a touring caravan or camper had just a little too strong a hint of "Pikey" about it for his tastes, so he bought an old but very tidy 40something foot (Can't remember exactly) narrow boat and lived on that. He worked in software development back then, and could work from anywhere with an internet connection, so he was happy enough using his laptop and a GSM modem. It was a bit basic, with a solid fuel fuel stove with a back boiler for heating, cooking, and hot water, 12v electrics (plus a 12v transformer for when it was on a 240v hook up) for light, charging the boats batteries, and running a few mains devices via a 240 inverter. It also had a handful of solar panels, but the bulk of his power still came from an extra alternator and charging system on the boats engine. As I said, it was basic, but it worked, and if anything stopped working it was reasonably simply to work out why and fix it.
One day, while he was back in the area, a group of us all met up in a pub, and while chatting he mentioned that he was still paying something like ÂŁ300 a month for the storage unit he'd rented to put his stuff in when the ex kicked him out. We all chatted about how this was extortionate for a fair while, and eventually 2 pairs of friends in the group said they'd both be happy to store half his stuff each to save him that ÂŁ3k+ a year. As a thank you for that he offered to take them on a few on boating holidays each a year, and they eagerly agreed. After they'd all been out a few times, he realised that they easily learnt what they were doing with the boat, so could get on perfectly fine without him there. From then on, under the heading of "Giving them some privacy", he'd get the boat all stocked up, then when they got there, they'd just exchange keys. They'd go off on his boat for a week or so, and he'd use their car to get to their home, and live there until they called to arrange where he should meet back up with them with their car.
I was chatting to him about this arrangement once, and he said it was amazing. It was like a holiday for him too. He'd take hour long baths every day......... and each time he'd use the toilet, he'd watch the "Waste" flush away with a warm fuzzy feeling that it was all gone for good, and he'd not have to eventually see/smell it again when he needed to humph the toilets "Turd tank" across a marina to empty it. :D
He had that boat for something like 10 to 12 years in the end, and only sold it when increasing mobility issues started making it impractical to carry on with the lifestyle. But he does say that if his body hadn't started to turn traitor on him, he'd still be happily living on it.
Nice story to read.
Another wonderful Friday cruising with you boys, and puppy Otis! It doesnât get any better! Shaun, Iâm allergic to jogging, too! I believe you love Colin for many reasons, and I think his wonderful ability to make you laugh is a big one. Until next week, all the best!
Aww, thanks, Pamela! x
Jogging, unless you are being chased by a bear, is pointless.
Forgot the Falkirk Wheel; definitely one of the wonders of the canals
Nope I didn't forget anything. It's not on the list. Take it up with the peeps who wrote the list đđ»
About four years ago, we completed the project to get rid of about 75% of what we owned, and sold our house to move into an apartment. It was an excellent change for us, great to have less stuff, less to maintain, etc. However, the ease you describe of finding a quiet place to moor really makes me wish we could divest of most of the rest of our stuff, because apartments are not very quiet and I really wish we could move as easily as you.
Bite the bullet and go for it. I sold my house 2 years ago, brought a canal boat now live Mortgage free. Yes itâs not totally stress free, itâs has its problems, but on the whole itâs a much better lifeđ
Like Matt says in his reply to you, it's not stress free, but you can easily find quiet places and spend up to two weeks there before having to move on. Apartments are hell! I'd never live in one again if I can help it đ
Simply Stunning camera work.
Amazing camera angles with tripods, booms and drones!

WOW Thank you xxx
Howdy well you didn't convince me not to live on a narrow boat but you definitely have convinced me too, as always great video thanks from aus đ
Always a pleasure, Stevan!
As a fellow Aussie I'd love to do this, even just for a holiday, but there's nowhere down here in Vic that it can be done. We're not big on canals that a narrow boat could navigate. Very sad indeed.
@@grandmasmagic3858 Been thinking the same Carol. It just seems so peaceful & idyllic.
@@mirandarosman3721 I even googled Australian canals! There's actually more than I realised but they don't connect like the ones in the UK. I'm guessing geography & land mass play a role too. The closest would be a houseboat on the Hawksebury. As for narrowboats I never knew there was such a thing. All very tame & mostly carefree.
From the other side of the pond ⊠I canât adequately express my gratitude at your willingness to share not only your narrowboat journey but your personal one as well. Please continue to take precious care of each other. On a lighter note may I say that I truly appreciate your mix of cameras and viewpoints without getting 'artsy' with your 360 camera! Your 'stories' are delightful and often insightful. Continue to enjoy the good life.
Thanks for noticing đ
Boy are you right about the boating community, self reliance, everything you talk about. When I lived aboard I felt like a turtle; I carried my house around with me. Thanks so much, Sandie đ
Fantastic video⊠professional, funny, informative⊠what weâve come to expect. Great camera work too. Iâve lived and traveled long distance on a boat, and I think because you move at a speed that is human, walking speed, you understand the sense of distance more. Everything is more relatable, and you get to understand why you canât always travel in a straight line, and our ancient, inherent inner sense of being human is satisfied. Car, plane and rail (traiiiiiiiiiiiiin!) journeys cause stress to some degree because they detach you from that. And also, when you arrive somewhere by boat, people are a bit more welcoming, because youâve made the effort, rather than just one of the hordes who arrive by car or plane? I love our Friday nights; thank you, you two!
You've got it exactly right, Chris đđ»

Colin & Shaun, I found your channel about a week ago and have become absolutely enthralled with the two of you, your experiences, the history and the narrowboat life. Living in South Africa, there is nothing like that here and you have about 2,000 miles of canals to traverse.. like, wow! Followed your journey from day one, even saw you pass me when Silver fox was launched at St Marys Marina! Stood on the back of my GRP cruiser waving like a soft S***e at Scarisbrick as you went into Liverpool. I always remember thinking "I must look like a tickaloon to them" lol :) Enjoyed every episode so far and not long until I retire and Join you on a narrowboat cruising the cut (where have I heard that before?) keep doing what you do best and that's make a lot of people smile :)

I just love the countryside vistas you get on a canal boat, so that is our Number 1 on being on a canal boat. Nothing like waking in the morning and seeing that mist rising off the water and the atmosphere it creates. We are so looking forward to our three months on the canals in 2022.
Enjoy! x
Just passed you moored up on the Oxford canal! What a great surprise. Weâre just coming to the end of our first narrow boat holiday, and you two have been our inspiration to take the trip. Itâs been total bliss. Thanks so much!
Very cool! You should have shouted and thrown chocolate đ€Łđđ»đ
I'm hoping that hydroden fuel cells become a decent and affordable option for my barge engine and heating. Hopefully some day soon! Sadly I just can't power the barge with batteries as it'd just be too expensive (and batteries aren't perfect either) but hydrogen on ships does seem a promising technology; the waste product being water!

Well, you tried hard on the negatives, and they really were good reasons, but I believe the positives won out. I think, for me, the deciding factors were the slower pace of life and abililty to gain peace and quiet in the countryside away from the rat race and all it's pressures.
Stay well and healthy both of you, you're becoming my therapy and antidote to the insanity and chaos I and many others live within.
Well, all I can say is âI knew it !ââŠ. I knew if I watched this episode Iâd feel even more compelled to cash in an embrace the narrow-boating lifestyle. I have to say that taking the leap from bricks & mortar to cruising the canal network terrifies me but having followed your adventures I dream of making that leap. Keep the vids coming, your adventures are inspiring and I wish you every success⊠Kindest regards Steve
Hehe! Cheers Steve đđ»
OK, the Bat and Owl joke got me rolling. I've now confirmed what others think that I'm crazy laughing out loud. Love everything you do. Best Wishes.
Glad you like them! đ
I still remember your trip on the Tidal Thames, and seeing a whole different London from your perspective, that was amazing. Great vlog, and as always, that drone and camera antics, I nearly swallowed my chicken drumstick whole! đ
Glad you enjoyed it! Also glad you didn't choke đ€Ł
Very interesting, the positives clearly outweigh the negatives but Iâm not sure thereâs enough shoe storage on a boat! Hope you managed to dodge the hailstorms this week, have a good weekend. X
PS, Rosie & Jim are enjoying their retirement with Tilly, Tom & Tiny and the Tellytubbies.
I hope so too!
I love helping boaters through the locks and brides
Nice one. I'm sure they appreciate it too đđ»
Great video I love going on your narrow boat adventures and learning about the history of the place you both go to hope you both and Otis have great week from New Zealand đđđđđđđđđđđđđđđ¶đ¶đ¶đ¶đ¶
Thanks so much, Shirley! x
Very interesting, having a second look

I'm sold! If I wasn't living on a tropical island right now, a narrowboat would be on my shortlist of options. Having lived in remote cottages and generally lived the rural lifestyle for most of my adult life, I can absolutely confirm the benefits of the wonderful Englis countryside. Mind you, don't make it sound too appealing, you might find things getting rather crowded.
Loving you channel guys. Thanks very much and keep up the good work.
Ooooh, which tropical island? xx
@@FoxesAfloat Mauritius. You would both be welcome if you ever want a holiday in the sun.
Awesome, eating my Indian takeaway whilst watching a new video from you two, just like I do every Friday. Doesn't get any better. The camera shots you guys get are so good too!
Aww, thanks so much, Darren! I hope the takeaway was yummy đ
lovely scenery! great video guys
Thanks Drew! x
"There is nothing - absolutely nothing - half so much worth doing as simply messing about in boats." - Wind in the Willows. Alan Parkinson
Summed up perfectly x
Thanks guys for another great video. You live in a beautiful country. đđŠđș
We do. Thanks, Craig đđ»
Watching your vlog is a great way to start the day, Iâm watching at 9:00 am. Iâm in California, USA and look forward to every Friday! You never disappoint. Thanks guys đ
Aww, thanks! x
Only wish we had canals like that in Australia. Another great episode. Heading back to the east of Australia after 2yrs working in the Northwest which is a 7 day drive. Be good to see the family again. Keep up the great work guys.
A 7 day drive?????? OMG your country is far too big đ€Ł
@@FoxesAfloat Yep a 5200km drive but some great scenery.
I am wo glad finding you boys break my time up you make me laugh and smile, where are you both from I am a northern girl well just 62 year old girl lol. I am blind now did a few years sailing before my blindness. I now live in kent near my sister, been awful with the lock downs but luckily I have my partner in crimbo, my big black guide dog to keep me sain
Nice one!
I'm not sure I could live on a narrowboat, but I'd like to take the Mrs for a holiday on one to try it.
Do it đđ»
Brilliant! You two keep me sane - ish. Don't stop.
No plans to đ
Loved the drone shots lads, May have recognise at least one (hopefully not the other two) neighbours đ€Łđ€Ł

Jump back in the alley and nanny goats
18-wheeler Scammels, Domenecker camels
All other mammals plus equal votes
Seeing Piccadilly, Fanny Smith and Willy
Being rather silly, and porridge oats

I fully understand all your reasons. Motorhomers are in the same situation, your video makes a heck of a lot of sense.....well done
Cheers! x
My husband and I (in America) have been binging your channel for the last few days. We are RVers here in the states, so this is terribly interesting to us! Also, I'm a fellow videographer/CZcamsr, and I am utterly impressed with your cinematography and editing skills. Thank you for the inspiration!
Thanks so much! Lovely feedback đđ»đ
@@FoxesAfloat you have an incredible knack for b-roll. It's an awful lot of effort setting up all those extra shots. My favorite spot of brilliance is when you take an image of what a place used to look like 100+ years ago, and morph it into video of what it currently looks like from the exact same position. Perfection!
Hello Loves! I ALWAYS enjoy your videos - and can't express enough the gratitude I have for your weekly updates. Like visiting with lifelong friends! But I do have a quirky question... you mention fish in the canal, but how do they survive? Does the canal have an upstream/downstream flow? Unless you are on a river, where it is REALLY obvious which way the river flows, the water always looks so still !
The canals are really full of life, they're not the stagnant, polluted waters you might think. They do have a slight flow, this is from water passing through the locks, so the canal does have a fresh constant water supply xx
Just as they do in lakes and ponds Jade, all they need is water and oxygen
A bat and an owl?! I laughed so hard, I peed!
đ€Ł
Thanks for another great video, gentlemen. Made me chuckle. Even travelling under Birmingham on the canals and seeing that city from a different perspective was a memorable experience for me. Needed a stiff whisky to get over the Pontcysyllte aqueduct, but my crewmates got me through.
Glad you enjoyed it
Colin! One of these days one of the arty drone/camera shots where you only just miss something is going to go badly wrong, with expensive & possibly wet results!
Cheers, Mystic Smeg đ€Ł
