- We travel on Narrowboat Morning Star towards Crick. Will we make it on time? Our final few journeys on our beautiful 57' narrowboat continue as we travel with friends along the Macclesfield Canal, through Stone and the amazing Harecastle tunnel.
Paul & Anthony together with Dexter live full time, but manage to work part-time, on a Narrowboat, cruising the UK Canals and finding out what it's really like to be Living on a boat exploring the Nature and scenery on some of the best canals and rivers in the UK onboard an Oakums Narrowboat called Morning Star. Our brand brand new narrowboat launching in 2023from Oakums Narrowboats is embracing the latest technology including lithium, solar, and electric propulsion, the boat will be coal and gas free. We can't wait to share our new adventures with you.

We were just saying the other day how well Dexter was doing , he seemed to have a new lease of life once you moved on bird your boat. Some days are better than others tho when we get older 🤪! Scarecastle! I would be hiding in the boat ! Great vlog as usual, really look forward to them ☮️

Good to see the last few cruises on Morning Star 1 because it will end at Crick and the end of that chapter. Dexter is still brilliant for his age, yes he has slowed, but havent we all lol He did make a quick get away from the swan, as I guess you did Anthony. The Dutch barge didnt look much wider, if at all from narrowboats ? maybe the camera angle ? sounded nice though. Gosh the water colour near Harecastle, its never a good colour at the best of times in canals, but orange !!! I like tunnels since you dont meet many, so a bit of a change. Lovely vlog with lots of different things shown, thank you. Lots of happiness to you three xxx

He surprises us sometimes and acts like a pup. Dexter definitely reacted the same way as me with swans.

Another great video. I'm with Dexter re the tunnel. I'd be inside with all the lights on, a very large glass of something very alcoholic and the music on lol. I hate tunnels and deep locks. I'm so claustrophobic I can't even wear a polo neck jumper, in case my head gets stuck 🤣. I have an elderly cat (15 today) and it is sad to see our furbabies slowing down. Although the way Dexter told that swan off made me laugh. He may be getting old in body but his mind is still razor sharp. Have a fantastic weekend.

Hi you two, my strongest memories of Harecastle tunnel were in the early sixties when the corner of the wooden cabin crunched the side and lots of bricks came tumbling into the cockpit! Very little maintenance on any of the waterways then as the working boats were almost finished.
Hey Marilyn, blimey, that sounds a bit scary! Definitely wouldn’t have been the same level of maintenance then.
Fortunately, we are lucky to still have this beautiful working museum to enjoy.

It really was a speedy journey. We needed to be kept on track by Pete. I think this is Dexter’s favourite thing to do watching his surroundings bless him. Have a great weekend ❤

Aw, Dexter is slowing down, have you thought of trying some CBD oil? Vets prescribe it here to help dogs with arthritis and some other health issues but especially if they are in pain. I take CBD gummies myself at night now, it helps with my being able to sleep better, if my knees hit each other in the night it woke me up but now it rarely does. I do put a memory foam pad between them but I used to move around a lot I guess but not so much now.
It doesn’t make me “ stoned” at all though there is a tiny bit of THC combined in them.
Looking forward to seeing more of the new boat, this was a lovely cruise too. 🙋🏼♀️
He is Dawn bless him. Not sure if the vets do that here. He is on arthritic medicine though. Glad they are working for you. Being used in all sorts of applications for pain relief etc. won’t be long before the vlogs are on the new boat. Hope you had a lovely weekend ❤

Hey guys. We are all good thank you. Loved the Harecastle, brought back memories of us doing it on a hire boat to determine if narrowboat life was for us. It was definitely chilly and wet this time. Funny enough, Paul mentioned us filming the tour and we are hoping to do it on Sunday.

Happy Friday evening. Hope you had a great day. 😊 I have a feeling I'd never like tunnels. I suspect I'd have to make a blanket fort and hide away till it was over. Tunnels are bad enough but shutting the doors would be just too much for me. So I'm with Dexter! Maybe he'd share his spot under the dinette? 🤗 I love the color of NB elektra and recognized her right away. The wooden boat was very neat too. It hasn't been very hot here yet (78F right now) but I'm having AC problems in my car. It needed recharging because of a leak that they can't find. They added dye for finding the leak but it's already not cooling so what I paid for is gone and I still don't have AC. It's going to be a hot 🥵summer in the car... Travelling through Harecastle years ago, our dog was absolutely terrified, whether in the boat or on deck. He trembled all the way. He wouldn’t even eat a digestive biscuit: first thing he did when we emerged however! 😀

Well that’s was weird. I saw your vlog came in but didn’t have time right then to watch it. I subscribe to lots of CZcams things mainly craft. Went to watch yours and couldn’t find it, searched and searched in the ones that cami in, in the who’d I just went to search to find you. OMG you’ve changes from a blue to a green pic and I was looking for the blue profile photo, I didn’t realise how much notice I took of that. Wont happen again. That water is horrible eh. Hey Pauline. It is weird how much our kind takes in without realising. We wanted the logo to represent the new boat. The water is a horrible colour. All that iron ore, the same colour as Worsley. The tunnel is definitely worth doing. It was wider than I remember too. Have a lovely week ❤

Hi Paul, Anthony and Dexter Dog, What a lovely cruise you had on this weeks' Vlog. Good to see your friend's Scottie dogs, especially Hamish when he was trying to get on your boat. Harecastle tunnel would be too claustrophobic for me. I don't blame Dexter going into the cabin to hide form the tunnel. Are there escape routes every so often up stairs to the surface, like I have seen on other tunnels? The Tomato soup colour of the water was amazing, I'm guessing minerals from the land have been washed into the canal during heavy rain? Thank you both for some great tunnel facts. Always very interesting to hear the History of such things. When you're in the tunnel why do they close the doors behind you? Sorry if you already said the reason (I'm tired tonight). Anthony, after all your hard work, you deserved to relax for 3 hours in the pub. Well done. Paul has not done a magic trick for the viewers in some time, could Paul be coaxed (even if it's the same trick) to share a trick again please. I love Magic. Aww thank you. Hamish is such a sweet old boy. He loves Dexter because he is less boisterous. I don’t mind tunnels, apart from getting halo effects in my eyes.
There are escape routes part way through. You are right re the minerals, I think it is iron ore that turns it orange.
The doors are closed because they turn on large extractor fans for the diesels fumes. That was a bit disconcerting the first time we did this tunnel.

Hi lads. Going through the Harecastle tunnel reminded me of the time we did it. We had rented an Anglo Welsh boat from Great Haywood and we did the Shroppy , the Middlewich arm and then onto the Trent and Mersey. This was in the early 70’s when Narrowboating was just becoming popular. Unfortunately I don’t like tunnels so I spent the time making our evening meal with all the lights on 😂😂😂. If I’d known you were coming through Stoke I’d have come to give you a wave. I live only 7 miles from Stone. I can’t wait to see Morningstar 11. Take care 🤩❤

Lovely cruise guys on what I call ‘home ground’ so knew exactly where you where. That bridge is my favourite on the T&M. Salt bridge. Did you go to the pub in Weston (Saracens Head). Good food there and I’ve had many a drink or 2 in there too. Those bee hives freak me out cos I’m like Anthony when it comes to bees and wasps etc. have a great weekend. Hey Liz. Luckily the gear box was ok but it was still £800! They are, unfortunately, essential, but costly to maintain. You sound like you got the raw end of the deal though! Sorry you had such expense. Hope you are enjoying your weekend ❤

Dexter seems to be gaining a few kilograms.

Hi there..... hope your all ok. I had to send you this message as i could not believe it but you went over to a place called Stone... in Staffordshire. I was born in a hospital in Stone which has gone now but lived in Stafford and with my family (all passed away now) used to go for walks along the canal. We lived just down the road from the Worcester and Staffordshire canal but i have a feeling you went down the Trent and Mersey Canal. i had a friend who lived in Great (or) Little Haywood, cant remember which one and on your travels you might of heard of Shugborough Hall next to Tixall which was just down the road from me. I do not live in Staffordshire now. When i heard you say "Stone" my ears pricked up as i thought it was somewhere else but then you said Tixall and i was so surprised. Great vlog guys. Thanks for answering my question last time regarding solar panels. We've now got 3x375w panels and now not sure which type of batteries to go for. Our engineer said 4 x normal ones would be enough, hmm not sure, can I please ask what ones you've found good especially in those winter months. Thank you.
Hey Howard. That is a good amount of solar. We found the hybrid LifePo batteries worked well for us. In fact, I would go as far to say they are a game changer. I know a lot of people don’t like hybrid set ups but the lithium definitely made a massive difference for us. If you can afford full lithium then I would go this route. Friends have Lead Carbon which seem to be the next best thing. Hope you have a lovely weekend ❤

We have always been on hook up at a marina on the Grand Union but now moving her onto the Thames on a lock mooring just up from Windsor with no facilities, well except water, we already have fitted a compoost so sorted out in that department 😃. Hi Henry. He is fine. He has joint problems including a dysplastic rear hip but he is on meds. Thanks for the concern, he does worry us as he gets older. Have a lovely weekend. ❤
