Israel's war with Hamas, in response to the attacks of October 7, 2023, has led to more fatalities than in any previous Israeli war, with at least 34,000 Palestinians killed as of May 7, 2024. In Israel’s 2014 war in Gaza, just over 1,400 were killed. One factor in that difference is the use of artificial intelligence.
Israel’s incorporation of AI in warfare has been public for years through both defensive and offensive weapons. But in this war, AI is being deployed differently: It’s generating bombing targets. The promise of AI in a military context is to enhance strike precision and accuracy, but over the past few months Israeli outlets +972 magazine and Local Call have revealed that the multiple AI systems that help the IDF select targets in Gaza have contributed to the highest number of Palestinian civilian deaths and injuries ever.
In our video, we interview multiple experts to understand how two specific systems, Gospel and Lavender, operate, and we explore the broader implications of current and future AI use in warfare.

AI was in fact developed for the most part so that missiles can hit their targets in unmanned mode, it is literally its oldest use.
You don't know much about the history of war do you?
Do you think it's like CoD?
@@PotatoCruncher12 Yeah, before it was heavily focused on positioning tactics. But since WW1 they started installing weapons on airplanes, tanks were developed, there was a lot of technological advancements. It made the act of killing way easier.
And now, to see we’re using AI to calculate the possible numbers of casualties on a bombing. It objectifies their lives even more, and it takes away the human connection we have with them. It’s not on a personal level anymore.
@@PotatoCruncher12in the Pre World-War 1 Era, Wars that were fought were often categorized as "Gentlemans Wars" by Historians, due to the strict rules of War European Nations would abide by (this only counts for direct wars between European Powers). For example, Generals and Officers that were captured would be treated with high respect. This is because every kind of breachment of these unspoken rules would reflect badly on the nations ruling classes. For Context, an overwhelming majority of European Powers were Monarchies (most of which also closely or distantly related), and Barbaric Practices of Warfare would reflect badly on the Monarchs reputation. This would make forging new Alliances with that nation less favourable for other nations.
An example for such a war would be the Austro-Prussian War. Only a few years after the war, the newly founded German Empire and Austrian Empire would become inseperable allies.
The turning point for brutality in Warfare came during WW1, because it was all-or-nothing for everyone involved. Combined with the new technological advancements, war would be focused on the most destruction possible.
And nowadays, we have the technologies available to completely wipe us off this planet 3 times.
When we used to see in history books the atrocities of the past we always asked ourselves 'how could people allow this?'
we are seeing a genocide in a time where news and information are in the palm of our hands.
Like, even people in the 60s didn't understand how that was possible, we really forget fast
I could have sworn that the bombing a music festival full of college kids was how they decided.
There are no hostages .
This is legitimately terrifying...
Thank you vox. History will remember how you were one of the very very very few that did the work that every major outlet should normally be doing but isn't.
What's also important to mention about the authorization of civilian casualties (6:15) is the following. It was also mentioned in the +972 Magazine article that after these assassinations "the collateral damage calculation was completely automatic and statistical," according to an Israeli intelligence officer.
To quote the source: *"The model was not connected to reality. There was no connection between those who were in the home now, during the war, and those who were listed as living there prior to the war. [On one occasion] we bombed a house without knowing that there were several families inside, hiding together."*
What this means is that, even given the fact that these are the highest casualty rates permitted in any conflict, these numbers cannot show reality. They're rather bloodsoaked odds. And the Israel regime has shown it does not care if they are in their favor.
Could it be possible that wars and conflicts around the world that the US funds serve to test out weaponry?
AI did not tell Israel to bomb anything. Israel just wanted to bomb something, and had AI help it decide who it should be.
AI is not the tool, it is the excuse
this sounds like a scifi plot with all these comcially villainous names.
unfortunately, its not fi
I have a headset on and jumped in the beginning with the bombing sound. I can't imagine what they feel.
AI face recognition for security check at Chinese school dormitory: Dystopian police state.
AI used by IDF to bomb Gaza apartment blocks: The dream of the future.
The most important part of this story for understanding how the IDF operates is the “Daddy’s home” part.
Civilian residential areas being referred to as “Power Targets” tell you everything you need to know.
Watch the movie "Eye In The Sky" - It's essentially "The Trolley Problem," but with drone warfare
(it was also Alan Rickman's last movie before he passed away)
Cool insight. The future of warfare is so interesting.
Wish it was a bit more in depth though.
SMASH is to shoot down drones. Yet they make it sound like it is used on humans. Vox has always lied to make things fit their agenda. I would not be surprised if other things in this video were untrue.
AI = America & Israel
They live in an open prison and an open experimental weapon laboratory, broadcasting live worldwide
This is sick!!
Truly
They voted for a terorist organization to rule them, and spent 10s of millions of dollars of foreign aid on building tunnels. It's a prison of their own making.
oh look a civilian airliner
Skynet...coming to a city near you.
At 6:11, we learn that this operation tends to cause more collateral damage if the attacking the target would yield less military advantage . This is important because in international criminal law, "The principle of proportionality prohibits attacks against military objectives which are 'expected to cause [collateral damage] which would be excessive in relation to the ... military advantage anticipated'". -- ICRC explaining CIHL by quoting from Protocol I to the 1949 Geneva Convention. Therefore, the law expects that attacks on less advantageous targets causes less collateral damage to civilians, not more.
Black Mirror is becoming reality
I thought the was an international law that prohibit the use of A.I for military use
Pretty sure this is how skynet rises.
Never disregard the three laws of robotics
