Interesting reading the intense heat in the comment section (wow lots of angry people) with Musk fans accusing this video of being biased against Musk while others accusing the video of being way too favourable.
The video was definitely balanced which is why I guess it is drawing such heat from both quarters. I guess in defence of people accusing the content creator of leaving stuff out, the stuff you want included would make the video a lot longer. In my view he covered enough to show that Musk is a very clever but very strange individual who has a dangeous nasty streak in him and so his control of Twitter is very worrying. I am afraid I am not a Musk fan especially after the roll he helped play in stoking the UK riots and his support of Trump.

Hey Johnny, you’ll probably never read this comment but I think I know why Elon had his pivot. I’ve been a shareholder way longer than most Tesla stans and have been watching Elon’s progression in real time, before most people had even heard of him.
The pivot came because of the pandemic but it was the final straw of 4 events I see as formative to his current world view.
There was the jury trial Tesla lost regarding racism and resulted in a gigantic jury award (later overturned). Elon prides himself on being race-agnostic, and as a youth, he was much more willing to be friends with black South Africans than other whites. He was very confident Tesla was going to win the trial, and likely blames the “woke mind virus” for the unjustifiably high award.
Then there was his daughter coming out as transgender. There are few details about this but I think it is safe to say Elon did not take this well. They have no relationship with each other and again Elon likely blames woke ideology for this. He keeps saying that he “is a liberal”, but he thinks the political spectrum has moved so far left that it makes him look like a conservative.
Then there is his sense of betrayal by the Democratic Party,(which he voted for up until either the 2016 or 2020 election) which has never embraced him despite the fact that he made the electric car happen (along with improving large-scale electrical storage). Because Tesla is not unionized, the Dems cannot get too close to him for fear of alienating their union base. He has been repeatedly shut out or ignored by the Dems on many initiatives, whereas e.g. Mary Barra was given undue credit for innovating in the EV space.
Lastly, the pandemic happened, and as someone else here had mentioned, he was angry that the government had the power to shut down his factories. He himself had a different view of the seriousness of the pandemic, and felt that he was being muzzled and censored for his view in the early months and days of the pandemic.

"Not taking well" that his daughter is transgender is already conservative ideology, making all claims he's liberal untrue.
He seems to generally reason from first principles and has historically been pretty rational to build Tesla and Space X to where they are, but on societal issues he's clearly dogmatic.
If he wasn't, he would know basic facts, like gender affirming care has a wildly positive effect, or that there are physiological differences in the brain of transgender people which align more with their gender than their biological sex.
The only explanation I see is he's so conservative he's blinded by his values.

  • @Mahtrok
    @Mahtrok Před dnem

If you think about creating a new civilization on a new planet here is what you might need:
    - Rockets (Space X)
    - Electric Cars, as there is no fossil fuel infrastructure (Tesla)
    - A new type of (tunneled) road, as there is no breathable atmosphere (Boring)
    - A public transport system (hyperloop)
    - Satellite infrastructure and communication (starlink)
    - A currency / Finance System to pay your people…without paper, as there are no trees (Paypal / Crypto)
    - Maybe a smart AI to outsource more risky jobs and work on its own while the actual population is not fully built. (Open AI and XAi)
Everthing he does is interlinked. That might be true for X as well.
He needs a population for mars, all behaving and thinking in a similar manner and working towards the same goal. X might be an attempt to social engineer the future population of mars, no matter what good or bad comes about for those left behind on earth.
    Just my 2 cents

I can not stress enough how important twitter is for turkish opposition. Twitter is only social media platform in Turkey that is widely used and you can interact with. It is the organizing place of Gezi Park Protests,it is the place where journalists publish their investigations,it is the place where people who had forced to escape Turkey get their news and share their beliefs and information with Turkey,it is the place that international news enter to Turkey unfiltered. @@mjouwbuis I hope it stays like this but I don't think so. There are several reasons. First, Musk avoids conflict with Erdogan and shuts down opposition accounts upon request, especially accounts of the Gülen movement and whistleblowers from the more "dark side" of the Turkish State. Second, the bot game is big in Turkey. Each party has its own unofficial but somehow related bots and trolls (this may be an effort of that party or it may be a reaction to Erdoğan from the party's mass, especially its youth branches). But Erdoğan and his party use bots and trolls on a completely different scale. Even if the old Twitter couldn't solve this problem, it at least curbed it. Musk isn't even trying.

I remember digging into the claim that Tesla's patents were open for any company to use and pretty quickly found the catch. I don't recall the details, but it hinged on a total non-starter of an agreement you had to sign onto if you wanted to use their proprietary charging solution. Car companies had other options that didn't involve basically giving Tesla an automatic competitive advantage and went for that instead. Almost universally. The outcome (almost nobody in the market taking such a generous offer back when Superchargers were pretty much the only name in town) should speak volumes as to the value of the deal on offer.
Sure, they eventually dropped the requirement and now we have car companies declaring support for NACS charging standard over the next few years, but the idea Harris presented that Musk left the patents wide open and free for everyone is just straight-up propaganda (at the time it happened). It's an incredibly misleading narrative that ignores the massive strings attached. If the patents were genuinely open and available, it would have been a big PR win and a huge move forward for the industry - instead it was just a free PR win at the expense of setting back EV infrastructure development and making sure Tesla remained the only viable option as long as possible.

Very good video. I remember seeing an interview with Musk many years ago where the interviewer joked to Musk that his activities had the grandeur of a Bond villian so the world was lucky he wasn't one. Musk response was odd and I remember at the time thinking wow this man could be really dangerous.
Sadly, despite his great intelligence, he also has always had some very odd beliefs. Like many who have studied the sciences, he always swallowed the mistaken idea that anything is possible for humanity hence why he thinks we can colonise the universe. Folk like him need to be reminded of Newton and his fellow alchemists who were convinced they could change a base metal into gold. I honestly think if you had asked Newton which would be easier, to send a man to the moon or alchemy he may very well have answered the latter. The problem with humans is we remember science's successes but quickly forget its failures. I am sceptical we can even get people even to Mars alive once a space craft leaves the protective earth's magnetosphere for any length of time, let alone travel light years to other solar systems that just might have an earth-like planet.
As for his latest behaviour, it is at best very eccentric but sadly more likely has quite an evil component to it. Autism cannot really excuse this.

I just read through the comments on this video. Some people are supporting Elon despite some of the evidences that he doesn't need their support and doesn't care if they do. Others are against him. The real take-away is that one should never idolize another human being. We all have our virtues and our failings. Elon has his virtues - I think buying Twitter was a virtue since the algorithms are much more favourable to me - so it's a personal opinion. I do NOT idolize him because I don't trust him as I don't trust any wealthy people, nor do I trust any politicians - even the ones I vote for. I watch what these people do and I call them out if they do bad things. Sure, we can debate good and bad, but there are standards that are biblical and there are standards that are moral. Those are the ones I care about. Point being, Elon is a human being with the ability to good and bad like anybody else. He's larger than life because of his wealth, but he is neither good nor evil.

Another fact that wasn't mentioned in this video is that Elon Musk personally admitted how Hyperloop was just a ploy to divert attention and funds away from high speed rail construction in the US, which has ongoing for decades now.
He publicly branded Hyperloop as a new revolutionary mode of transport, but privately it helped sabotage potential competition to Tesla.
And that is a common trend among Silicon Valley "tech-bros" in general, where they try to reinvent the wheel coming up with "innovative" ideas to attract investors and ignoring much simpler and cheaper solutions to the same problem.
For example, inventing an AI algorithm to match car drivers taking similar routes and having these cars be transported by a specialized truck to free up road space and reduce traffic. But there's a much simpler solution: public transport.

The last point about AI driving vs public transport. Though I would love public transportation to be the norm in the states, it's def not a simpler solution because it requires huge infrastructure and cultural changes in America where politics and the government need to be involved, and that is anything but simple especially compared to AI driving that aims to build on top of the existing infrastructure.

Elon has a checkered past of getting corporate jobs because he's a rich-kid who gets fired for being totally incompetent, then litigates his firing so that part of the settlement is that he's named a founder of the company when he wasn't. The company being sued is like, "OK, so letting this moron fraudulently call himself a founder means that we're done with his stupid a$$. Great! Everybody's a winner!" Everybody knows that him being a founder is BS, it's the equivalent of a 9 year old having a signed note that says, "I agree that Billy is the coolest kid in school, everybody wants to be friends with him and come to his birthday party, and he always has the high-score on Frogger."

This is much more accurate. I don't know if Harris just didn't want to delve into that much detail, but the way it was posed made is seem like he had much more involvement in paypal's success than he actually did. Paypal was a competitor that bought X to stomp out competition which could drive down their valuation. I don't believe X was ever even fully functional. Elon got stake in the new company, and made a lot of money when it sold. None of X really ever got incorporated, and there's nothing really suggesting Elon had any major part in Paypal's success. I don't think it's fair to entirely discredit Elon on things like Tesla, but even that was kinda weird in the fact that he sued the original owners to claim that he was the original found of Tesla. He's very strange, and obviously has always had a history of self importance. It really does make it seem as though his role in most of his ventures has been largely inflated.

Much of this analysis is difficult to reference or qualify because it describes Elon or his conduct in abstract terms. I appreciate that brevity requires generalizations, but there’s a whole lot of psychoanalysis with barely any qualification.
As a lawyer I also got set off 17 different ways by the statement that his patents weren’t copyrighted and that explains their being open-source + publicly accessible. This is incoherent, it’s common knowledge that patents and copyrights are completely separate forms of IP protecting different aspects of a work - a “copyrighted” patent doesn’t mean anything. Besides, patents are always publicly accessible, which doesn’t say much to a patent-holder’s charitability. If Elon liberally licensed or otherwise gave away his companies’ patent rights that would be noteworthy, but there is no reason to spend money and resources on getting a patent if you are simply going to give it away - so I assume this didn’t happen as described.
I appreciate this might seem nitpicky, but I’m not describing a complex legal technicality, and to the extent that the thesis of this video essay is based on such generalized facts that are either ambiguous or blatantly wrong, I can’t say I learned much of anything concrete except what Johnny Harris thinks of Elon Musk’s mindset. How to convey information in an essay is a personal choice, but I find such basic mistakes to be a gross journalistic oversight. Nevertheless, I appreciate the effort and hope to catch you on a train stop some other time! Toodles! :P

Thank you for the insight on patents vs. copyrights. Regarding trying to assess some of Elon Musk's conduct, I don't it's a matter of abstraction. For example...when Nancy Pelosi's husband was attacked, and then Elon shared a link to a conspiracy theory website that lied about it, and then Elon later deleted the tweet without correcting the misinformation...that is just bad behavior. A man with one of the biggest platforms in the world (artificially boosted by him) should be even more careful about spreading lies. In addition, if he allows someone onto the platform that outrageously lies (e.g. Alex Jones), he then becomes complicit in spreading the lies.
I'm not saying Elon is an evil dude. Like everyone else, he's a mix of good and bad. But one of the things that bothers me about free speech absolutionists like him (other than hypocrisy) is how some view free speech as this moral ideal, and then go on to express themselves in bad ways (lies, misinformation, etc.). Regarding freedom, humanity would fare better if we remember the counsel of Viktor Frankl (paraphrased): next to the Statue of Liberty, should be built the Statue of Responsibility.

Speaking of dictators... and how they are often misguided... Few people know about this but (H__) itler was convinced that population growth is only possible when new land is acquired. Acquired = conquered during war. So he started the war. How could he have thought that this land has to be conquered? It was actually very simple mathematics for him. Only cities grew larger in population size (and it was the desired kind of growth because that also meant industrial growth). In order to grow population there must have been more food produced - per every new born citizen. But the yield of wheat for example was constant and so increasing food production meant that more land was needed. Only after the second world war real pesticides were invented as well as better agriculture and that allowed for population growth with the same amount of land. Of course the real reason behind this conquest was the will of conquest and many other reasons but the need for food production was one of the reasons.

This is kind of mid. You spent half of the video talking (and speculating) about him buying twitter and the rest was just giving him the softest of takes about his life. You didn't mention his union busting, the animals that were tortured for nuralink, or that he sued the founders of Tesla not to say that they had actually made it. Johnny, this is weak journalism and I'm unsubscribing. Tom Nicholas was right.

Yeah, I guess the fact that Twitter misrepresented the number of Bots that were members in their estimates wasn't of enough of an issue to give Elon at the very least a more accurate valuation number to overpay for the privileged. Or maybe, his discovery during the standard kinds of due diligence in buying a public company showed some kind of drama with the Federal Government that would have to be cleaned up or lived up to, might have made him a tad more hesitant, once the final show and tells we're going on. The Bots alone should have drastically reduced his buying price, and the only reason the stock price held when it was announced was the offer on the table..... Jesus that court order could have gone the distance had he wanted it to.

Citing the time he spent at Twitter as a reason he doesn’t deserve a paycheck from his own company after increasing its value 1000 percent or so. The dude is different. Says dumb things.
