What housing crisis ? There are literally thousands of houses and apartments for sale down the Med coast, from Girona to Algeciras. A lot of ex-pats have returned to their home countries leaving empty properties which agents are having a hard time trying to sell, even with drastically reduced asking prices. The same with half-built blocks which local authorities have halted completion of, claiming they are 'illegal'..... but hey, its those same authorities who turned a blind eye to the start of those builds by developers. Firstly Spain needs to look at why it has a huge empty housing stock.

Those are houses in vacation locations, people need houses where the jobs are, meaning the big cities or near them, within a reasonable commute distance.
There is also a lot of empty houses in small interior villages, the problem is you can hardly make a living there. Brilliant if you are retired or on holidays but not so much if you need to work.

The Locals need cheap rental housing. They are not looking to purchase properties. They are so many properties in Spain that have been illegally built, and the people who built them never went to prison for doing it. Furthermore, they kept the huge amounts of profit from the illegal activities. Why did the courts not seize all their assets and hand it back to the people who were conned in the first place? Simple, corruption is rife in Spain.

It's a bureaucratic nightmare to do any reforms - not to mention costly. That is the absolute easiest way to create more housing, though. Problem is, the Government loves the elderly votes so they're just going to give lip service to the housing costs on young people to ensure they keep the homeowners (50+ years of age) happy.

A better way is to incentivize military enrollment via benefits, compensation and other advantages. It certainly would be a good way to help reduce the unemployment rate. Spain, like any other economically strong country, must be capable of defending itself. Location means little in relation to Russia with today’s weapons.

It’s no surprise that youth unemployment is so high, no one in their right mind would employ anyone in Spain due to the excessive, social security, administration costs, finiquitos, 38 days holiday pay, health and safety courses, time sheets, natal leave, sick leave, and what ever else they can dream up, where is the incentive? There is no dynamics in employment policy, the politicians are out of ideas and corrupted by the corporations. The population accepts it’s the way that it’s always been and have not got the passion for change, sadly.

When you make things more expensive you get less of it. It’s too expensive to hire, keep and possibly get rid of employees. The hiring, and possible fire employees is difficult and expensive. You only hire the highest quality people and only if you must have them hence the higher unemployment. Many of the legislators in the States have never signed the front of a check. I just came back from my Pharmacy to get a Ventolin inhaler on prescription. I was a little surprised to see it had increased from 20c on prescription to 40c. Not a big deal really as it on prescription. I asked the pharmacist why and they explained the cost price has increased from €2 to €4 in the month of April, that a 100% increase with no explanation and no coverage in the general media. Hi, still around but can only see your YTs at midday. You seem, too, be getting better and better as the years tick by. Spain isn't the only country that has problems for the young people being able to afford accommodation incites or even in towns. When I lived in Devon we had the same problem, especially second homes (such as here in Galicia) making prices higher because of the availability. However I was very lucky and the local council rented us a beautiful Council house, which Spain doesn't have, and I was lucky enough to be able to buy a badly made house here when I was much much older here in Galicia, because of finally working in a good job. Air-B&B came about for people to earn a bit extra by renting their homes, probably to pay the taxes- I even thought of it as they have increased so much over the latter years. I just want to THANK YOU and say sorry I can only support you by LIKES. Hugs Joy

Gee Stuart, 28% youth unemployment and no compulsory military service. Maybe service , starting with basic training and learning how to make your bed in the morning in the barracks would be a start to becoming industrious and employable. To paraphrase Charles Dickens, : are there no yards to be landscaped, are there no ditches to be dug?" And seriously, a housing crisis with the low indigenous Spanish birth rate points to funding accommodation better than that which illegal migrants had in their home countries After all we have zoning, building codes and minimum living standards. Not to mention welfare cheques for all. "Unaccompanied youths should be returned to the parents that did not "accompany" them. We know where they are from.

All of which creates decent paying contracts and jobs. This new source of buildable revenue, encourage income from foreign souces such as foreign business establishments, digital nomads, and pensioners without the excessive taxes. 47% encourages them to go elsewhere, while 19% for low income wages seems to be encouraged. There are many angles - good, bad or indifferent - about compulsory military service “La Mili”, and there’s at least one that serves both the political left and right. Once in “La Mili”, that individual is no longer a member the unemployment rolls. If you add to the able body male list, the able body females of military age, and the total number of unemployed individuals is substantially reduced! Of course none of these “Mili” people are producing anything of value in economic terms. They just become a different type “necessary expense” to the tax payers. And in the end “La Mili” is more expensive than paying out unemployment benefits.
