The former Irish PM resigned a few weeks ago for no apparent reason except that he had made a very powerful pro-Palestinian statement in the US a couple of days earlier. Pedro Sanchez too, with a sizable amount of public support, has been threatening the EU to go it alone and recognize the Palestinian state, already reconized by more than 140 countries. Is he going to meet the same fate? Is it already set in stone? 🤨🤔 ...

Very interesting. If he knows trouble is coming from scandal it's probably best for him to step down. I know the contention of his presidency, but there's already been so much political instability, not sure another year of elections and things being up in the air is the best decision. However, seems it would be good thing to see him go.

    Stu,
In the US if I pay someone 100k, with ss Medicare,, workers comp medical and unemployment insurance cost me about 140k.
After taxes and approc 13% ss and Medicare, plus up to 26% tax they take home less than 70k. And that is less if they live in a state with income tax. I don't know Spanish tax rates but its probably similar.

There are lots of empty and abandoned homes. As far as I know , the main reason is family inheritance disputes. Some prefer to see them crumble rather than a relative getting any money even if that means they loose out too. I know. Make what you will out of it

Housing is out of reach for low earners in most countries, that is partly because many have no skills, no desire to make your own way, substance abuse and poor choices. Dropping out of school, choosing personal freedom over employment etc., etc., Canada has the same issues. In terms of employing people, it is always going to cost you money to hire and who would want to live in a country where you could just drop employees without any regard for them? The big companies pay too but, they have more options for writing it off, different ballgame! I think that every country has people who think they are suffering more than anywhere else, we all have issues.

I am a software engineer earning 2600 euros that is high salary in Spain, unable to buy a house in my city, a room is 900 euros, food 200 and car etc etc, medical insurance. I can rent, but i will never be able to buy because for that i need to put down 20% of the mortgage to buy a middle class home of 200k. So no, Spain is the country with mos degrees and masters for 100k people. Problem is foreingers buying houses and rising prices, estate not building public housing and limiting private companies, limiting the building licenses. The rest is the market.

    • @moiraty5338

@AngelShona1 It’s not that Spaniards don’t want tourism, it is that in some areas it is so out of control (for example, too many rentals are being converted into airbnbs and many are ilegal) that locals are struggling to find housing. It isn’t just an Spanish issue, Venice in Italy is planning to limit the entrance and charge a fee. I guess, after Covid, we are traveling more than we did before.

Angel we cannot buy a house, we are moving to the center of Spain, im a young lad earning a "high" salary, I am a software engineer. Not unable to buy, almost unable to rent, option 1 renting a room for 900 euros in Valencia plus then food 200 euros and the rest of things unable to save money, or option 2 renting out of town in a fucking dead village for 600 euros. Is unestable, we cannot deal with this shit anymore. People are just tired. And all we see is Brits, Germans, Dutch buying 300k cash, houses they use 2 months in a year and braging about it, and the sun and the tapas, while we are just fucking surviving. 40% of Spain is in risk of poverty.

Stewart you are wrong about the cost to employ someone here in Spain. I was recently chatting to the boss of our community maintenance company who showed me the payslip and costs for him to employ a gardener to our community, the gardener gets 1300€ a month yet it’s costing him a total of around 2300€ more or less per month! And you have to take into account substitute staff when that persons on holiday etc. This is just another example of how anti business or anti entrepreneurial Spain is which probably leads to that massive unemployment figure!

Hola Stuart, I always miss your livestreams, but watching back today I had so many thoughts. The first being that we had a fantastic lunch in Toledo a while ago, but had to pay cash as they didn't accept debit cards. Don't remember if we got any €2 in the change. Not that I would remember, since I was rather puffed after climbing all of those steps. Secondly, our taoiseach here in Ireland stood down suddenly a few weeks ago and we are all waiting for the real reason. He too was just worn out from the toll on his personal life. And lastly, I read today, in the Irish press that uk passport holders have to prove on entry to Spain where they are staying or face paying an €8000 fine. Is there any truth to this, do you know? Have just joined your channel and am obviously trying to get my monies worth😂
