One of Adam's favorite objects in the cave is his life-size T-Rex skull, which hangs above the shop's pool table. He's long wanted to hide a fitted lamp inside that skull, which is today's One Day Build! This project falls into the category of quick and dirty builds that allows Adam to work fast and cut a few corners to get the results he wants as efficiently as possible!

You're a 'Red Green' fan?
TESTED Editors. Think about the end cards when you edit. I wanted to see the shot Adam did and there were 2 end cards blocking the shot. Thanks
Exactly! Totally ruins the climax of the story. Glad I’m not the only one disappointed.
Seriously. They couldn't add 10 seconds of black for their end cards?
bloodgain if I recall correctly, they actual used to have animated end cards.
I was just thinking the same thing. I can appreciate wanting to push us to related content though.
@@PublicAtLarge You mean "understand". Appreciate makes it sound like the sacrifice of quality is worth it.
Adam every single time he shows us a prop: "you guys might not know this, but this is one of my all time favorite things in my shop"
one of meaning it's one from many others, makes sense
@@darkond3523 but favorite implies exclusivity. It's a paradoxical statement which is why it's funny. If everything is your favorite then well you get it
@@booty_hunter4207 Then again all this comes from a English language which on it's own makes zero sense and it's complicated enough so when people make mistakes or talk shit it's because the language alone is idiotic so we shouldn't really break our brains by seeking logic in something that doesn't contain any or at least very few from the overall picture. If people would be that smart as one states we are the world wouldn't take English as a common language fro communication or at least would work hard to make it coherent. To me still to this day from all the languages that I learned only the Serbian being the most efficient and easy to learn. Hey 👋
Hey
I've never resonated with anything more than, "I'll accept this build quality, and you won't. And I don't want to work that hard"
"let's clean up this wiring a little bit."
*Camera turns to show the cobwebs of wires going around the shop*
Yessss🤣
"Look, I think it's time we talked about what kind of build this is..."
ROFLMAO
We care about the personal builds. None of us want to read about the fire in the Mission District from some sketchy electricals.
We’re you though, were you really?!
Aren't all his builds theatrical though?
This is like all my build. Last project was slippers. Tapet some cheap fabric to my feets: Then cut it off and made my patter from that. Had to redu them ones, but now I have a pair that is perfect for my feets. :-)
You know you have been on YT too long when that portion of the video had to be spoken! Comment sections are a MF when you try to make things and help your fellow human learn new stuff! Luv this guys work! Never a hater!
"Think theatre, not retail" - words to live by
Famous last words before getting electrocuted aha
I love how enthusiastic Adam is about everything he does. So infectious and inspiring and he works at all kinds of levels from beginner to professional and shows you that ANY build is worth putting your effort into.
For me personally this has been the best one day build in quite a while. The combination of production values and actually having a chance to hear Adam talk about why he's doing what he's doing with some hints and tips and even a few anecdotes mixed in is an absolute joy to watch
I now realize how badly we need an entire show just about tape glue and wires.
Have you never watched Mythbusters?
His book had a pretty decent portion on that
Work in theatre
@@maxximumb Duck Tape, superglue, C-4, complex math, fun with a LOT of repeated failures, a LOT MORE fun with successes. This is the recipe for a MythBusters episode!
Ive been wanting to say this for a while now, but I absolutely love the sound engineer and editors that put these videos together. There is something to say about the ear your editors and engineers have. love it. The content itself is amazing as well.
Couldn't agree more! They are unsung heroes for sure!
*corrected for: Hilarious typos*
What an amazing build! For production team, please start adding splash screens/roll out screens at the end, so the ending of the video doesn't get covered by suggested videos
Exactly! Imagine how many takes that pool shot took and we don’t even get to see half of it.
Every channel should do this!
I love how almost everything in Adam's shop is 'one of his favorite items from the shop' XD
His work excites him, it's awesome and I aspire to have a room full of favourite things that I have made
Agreed! I reckon he's probably there 10hrs at a time and he entertains people too. It's a good investment to have a space full of your favorite things.
15:47 The way he holds his hands when using the nail gun is the way someone who has shot himself with a nail gun before holds things.
Certainly a possibility. That or he just learned the proper way to do it from the start.
Or how I check that it's disconnected and there's no pressure left in the system before clearing jam on a nail gun - fortunately not personal experience but I *did* see someone shoot himself in the throat with one.
@@MrGrimsmith the throat! Wow! I took one to the thumb before, but the throat! Sheesh!!
Having shot a nail straight into the tip of my thumb I can tell you you’re very right about that

'So where do you think we'll be in 65 million years?' 'Well... we'll be dead, but there'll be a replica of my skull hanging above Adam Savage's pool table'. No one would've believed him, but there he is.
Could have been a Boy named Sue.
We actually don't know Sue's gender. It's quite hard to tell the gender of a fossilised dinosaur except in rare circumstances. "Sue" is just a nickname 👍
Sue is among the biggest T-Rex specimen ever found. And in the T-Rex specie, females way are bigger than males. The probability for Sue to be a female is then very important. That's why she was named like this. Not a nickname.
I wanted to thank Adam for his words on "The kind of build this is" because I tend to get a lot of flack from people for the shoddy nature of my own builds when I'm making them for myself and after a while it tends to wear you down and make you feel like you need to put in way more effort than is necessary so others will think your work is "good enough". Knowing that someone as talented as Adam cuts corners because it's personal and easier makes me think my work isn't as bad as maybe others have suggested. So thank you. :)
This is easily my favorite build of his. Not because of the work itself, but because of my own thought process. Throughout the majority of the build I was thinking on how I would do certain steps differently or how I would approach it overall. It allowed me to think critically and truly affirmed the phrase "there's more than one way to skin a cat".
I love how every 5 minutes he stops and says "this is for theatre, it's crap" but it's still 100x better than anything I could make 😂
right, like people would buy something like this for 200 bucks
This right here.
This is large. I kept thinking he is making a lamp for a dinosaur... Thanks for reminding me this is just for theater. damn.
As if a dinosaur would even need a headlamp like they would ever go spelunking. could you imagine?? I feel so stupid now...
Volunteer some time at your community theater to help build stuff. You'll quickly see that you can make things and be amazed of how jankie everything is. But hey, it works and looks good twenty feet away!
When you want to transfer a large irregular edge quickly, stick a pencil into a bearing and run it along the edge while holding the pencil.

Checking his ruler tat. Coolest tattoo for Adam, what a great idea.
I understand practically nothing, but enjoy everything, about Adams's builds. Hands down my favorite videos to watch (Adam voice) full stop.
I have said "One, Two, Thrrreee" like the owl from the tootsie pop commercial for my whole life (I'm 24). I think I may have heard Adam say it on MBers and that is profound.
Whenever i watch Adam in his happy place, i like to play "Spot that movie prop" Then my head scrambles from the sheer amount of things and doodads in his shop.
I'm glad they put the camera operator's name in the under text. Gunther Kirsch did amazing job shooting this episode.
I met SUE!! It's an amazing exhibit. Makes you really appreciate how lucky we are that she isn't roaming around anymore..
"Did that comment help at all?"
*Triggers the more precisely minded crafters*
I'm reminded of how much Jamie and Adam drove each other crazy.
Adam is in perfect balance between engineer and construction worker.
“He’s doing it different then I thought” that sounds like your next book title.
Adam's 'quick and dirty theatre builds' are still better done than some 'pro' fancy stuff.
The amount of joy from Adam Savage here is contagious!
Well done. You've bought into the carefully-crafted on-screen persona that's been built up around him and you're also more likely to purchase the placed products in the videos (and maybe spend money attending the events he promotes).
It's designed to appeal to the demographic to which these videos and the associated products are aimed.
Whenever my friends say "I need to have this" I always say "let's make it" and they shun me. Adam shows how it is possible.
27:39
Adam: "Let's clean up this wiring a bit"
Cameraman: AHHHhhhHHHHhhhhH!
Nope, nope, nope, nope... Not doing that again!
Either the cameraman was really tired, or that was a low effort, low budget wipe transition.
Thank you Adam, you and the mythbusters crew is the main reason why I’m studying ME today. Thank you
I, too, want that T-Rex skull to be the lamp for my pool table. Adam, you're a genius.
I love how Adam actually looked at his arm to judge the measurement. I thought the tattoo was more symbolic not for use.
I feel like Adam’s whole life walks a line between symbolism and practicality.
No. It was supposed to be practical. No idea how exact it was to start with, let alone after some time has passed, but it's still close enough for use apparently...
My dad certainly agreed with Adam about mechanic's wire (baling wire). He carried a 200 ft. spool in every car he owned. I still remember spending a couple of hours in the middle of nowhere while we wired a completely failed exhaust system back together enough to finish the trip.
Okay I'm gonna have to make a T-rex skull lampshade now... can't believe I've lived this long without one!
Red Green imitation while applying reflective tape. Perfect.
Very cool One Day Build.
25:43 This spoke to me on so many levels after nearly 10 years of being a commercial Lego builder. I've also had this exact experience, and I couldn't even begin to explain on top of what Adam said with the key differences. I've had to do so many client level builds that made me want to quit altogether due to the pressures of perfection, but it's always worth it when you can just slapdash something together for yourself. Brilliant.
Love this mans philosophy on quick and dirty builds. Literally before he started talking about it, my first thought was “don’t paint the contacts!” Then he addresses it 10 seconds later.
I just buy black power strips. They always look cool.
"When you see me cutting all these corners, I'm cutting them because... I don't care." Can you call my research adviser and tell him that for me? Thanks.
*Not a legitimate approach for scientific research.
Sure, if you want to fail at whatever it is you're doing.
@@myfinalheaven9590 I meant cutting corners that don't actually matter if they are cut.
@@myfinalheaven9590 Also, it was a joke.
It resonates with me, like all my sewing projects are 'good enough' like noone will actually check the inside right ;)
Seeing all that raw MDF covered in black paint warms my theatre heart..
Brilliant! Now why didn't I think of that? Adam continues to amaze me in his methods. I'm so thankful at his willingness to share his talents with the greater maker world.
I also just realized he is making a T-Rex tongue!
The gaffer tape officially sealed it as a "theatre build."
thats how we do it
*Everyone else:* "Wow what an impressive looking facsimile of a T Rex skull."
*Adam Savage:* "You know what that would make a great lamp to hang over my pool table."
If you ever needed proof that Adam Savage sees the world differently to the rest of us mere mortals then *this* is it.
he is a maker of course he see everything different
@The Infidel ROTFLMAO! I see what you did there. 😂
I don't know if it's because I've been watching you forever or what but I love watching the things you come up with or do. Even before bed, helps me fall asleep, fun educational & helps me sleep.... Best :) thanks for being awesome!
Quick and dirty for Savage = really great for most others.

Adam channeling his inner Red Green
Jacob G I’m glad someone else caught it. It’s... uncannily good tbh. Hahaha
Was he impersonating Red Green deliberately or just the trope. I hope he was because that is a crossover I would love to see.
Since the women don’t find me handsome, I got to be handy.
I had to check he comments to see if someone else caught that. Lol!

I'm curious how many viewers are actually makers and how many just enjoy watching an enthusiastic person apply their expertise?
saying "it's beautiful" like Belloq... glad I'm not the only one who does that =)
MDF dust Adam. Come on man, we want to keep you around a lot longer! There're still too many one day builds to show us!
I wonder how many people have a T-rex skull and use it as a lamp above their pool table. I bet you could count them all on one finger. Adam Savage, you are unique.
I get the feeling Adam would be happily talking to himself through the build even if the cameras weren't recording, I know I would and do even though I don't have a team filming me as I work
4:20 The handiest tattoo of all time!
I remember my work running out of bailing wire. Big boss ended up ordering giant spools of the stuff. Its been 5 years since this and we are still on the 1st spool.
It made me truly happy to watch Adam make his dream pool table lamp.
I hope to one day feel as accomplished as this wonderful man
Yes! "..but there's no specific right way." It absolutely does help.
I never knew I needed a t-rex skull lamp until now.
I love me some Red Green Show references, gotta love the handyman's secret weapon.

Gunther Kirsch is doing a fantastic job on the camerwork ×
You may comment negatively, however Adam got the job done and it looks good.
He never claims to be a carpenter, he is a maker and make is what he did!
When Adam said it’s more a theatre build, I laughed and knew exactly what he meant. Lol 😂
27:39 "let's cleaning up this wiring a little bit"
Camera man: Whu! Did you see that?!
Adam Savage is Bob Ross of DIY
Adam, you should make one of those flaming fire looking lights to put just above the jaws and a few eyes, That would really set it off pretty nice!
13:48 Adam: *adds a beading of CA glue down the length of the board*
Everyone else: "Has any one got any acetate? I stuck myself to the bench. Again."
Let's talk about Jamie using CA Glue as a varnish for a moment...??
That's very common in woodworking
I use it for a great durable finish on stuff I turn on the lathe.
Lots of people repair guitars using "the Super Glue trick", and add baking soda, and you can repair white parts, like the nut at the headstock. It never occurred to me to use it to finish an entire piece.
Stew Mac has how to videos to use CA to fix guitar finish.
Adam, you genius is the best kind. It is complexly simple. It’s the glaringly obvious that most of us would overlook in an effort to make something needlessly more complex. I hope that makes sense

Robert Stallard yeah, OR I just think he is the kind of guy I’d like to call my friend. Pretty we are getting the genuine article that is Adam Savage in these videos.
I love these "Theather builds" a lot. I do shit like that all the time with just foamcore board (same type FliteTest uses for building their planes) and hot glue. I made cellphone stands, battery trays with a sepperator to sepperate the charged from the empty batteries, an angled camera stand, etc etc.
"Is that 2 inches?"
Looks at ruler tattooed on arm.
Right?! Saw that and started laughing.
Step 1:
Grab your T-Rex head..
Making lamps out of non-lamp objects is such a wonderful thing.
Adam with any one of is hundreds of random object that may, or may not actually have a use: This is one of my favorite thing in my shop! :D
How the hell am I supposed to say "FIRST" when you have so many loyal followers on this beautiful channel?
FIRST reply
2nd
@Bush Craft Hmmm that can't be right
Saying "First" in comments is utterly meaningless and quite frankly just spam. Add something meaningful to the conversation instead. Otherwise it's often better to not say anything at all.
@@LordTrilobite so according to the 19 likes I have so far, it appears I added humor and enjoyment, as well as a compliment to Adam's "beautiful channel". Quit crying.
2:07 i also use the thumb and pinky extended for a good guess on 8" inches haha
I, as a German can measure around 20 cm by stretching thumb and pointing finger as far apart as I can :D useful for quick measurements ^^
A "thumbs up" sign from base of my hand to tip of thumb is 6" (15cm) for me, very useful. It's also more consistent than spreading thumb and pinky apart. It also means if I put both hands together it's a foot.
21 cm here. My middle finger is 9cm on the inside and 12 on the outside if I count the knuckle too.
I heard the thumb to pinky rule of thumb was 9", but after I broke my hand, now it's only 8" on that side. The width of my thumb is almost exactly 1", and my shoes come out to almost exactly 12", which is helpful for moving furniture around.
Adam, you should install a few red led lights on top of this light, facing up to illuminate the inside of the skull. That would look amazing.
He keeps reminding me of the Woodwright Shop. The energy and the way he talks to the camera.
"I ordinarily dont use MDF because it's not stable..."
Meanwhile, woodworkers often use it for fixtures and jigs because....
I was thinking the same thing, but it looks like he's using fairly thin MDF for this so maybe that's why he said it?
At first I was thinking the same thing, but then I realized that I think he means rigid. It’s not crazy rigid at that thickness, but over time it should not move like solid wood, and that means it is stable.
He must mean strong/ rigid because it’s pretty much the most stable wood material that exists
It crumbles at the edges and it will sag with humidity/etc. It's a powder and glue cake. Lacks the inherent structure of wood. It is more stable in terms of dimensional rigidity in a dry environment, but is overall definitely weaker than wood.
Ryan but still far more stable than wood, soooo
I want to be Adam when I grow up
I think the way to be like Adam Savage is to NEVER grow up.
