No one can choose to believe a thing, any thing. Belief happens automatically the moment you are convinced of it. Without being genuinely convinced of its truth, a person cannot force themselves to believe it. They may have good or bad reasons to be convinced. They may feign belief to avoid being ostracized. But actual, real belief comes from being convinced. I've long since stopped trying to do the xtian devout godspeak, because it feels fake. I'm not convinced, so I lack the belief.

Atheist doesn't mean "non God" in meaning that there is no God. All it means is a lack of belief of a God, that there isn't enough evidence to prove a God exists.....that's it. Atheism doesn't say there is no God, all it says is that you haven't proved there is one.

I always took the label of agnostic atheist. As in what I know "gnosis" is that I don't and at least trying to be honest. Atheist as in "without religion". I generally think this is the more prevailing terminology these days. Is there a god? None of us know or can prove it, but it is much easier to deny religions with lack of evidence. I seriously think more people need to read Ernest Becker's Denial of Death not necessarily because "it is the truth" but because it is probably closer to the actual truth. Our religions and very culture are built off knowing that we will cease to exist. It is one of the most powerful motivators in our life. I also think more need to read Hume or something like Bruce Hood's Self Illusion to understand the idea of self is not real. This compliments our own denial of death or terror management.

You are just a wonderful fellow. Personally I have been an atheist for the past +25 years and have been interested about scientific things since I was a wee kid. Your views are so fascinating to hear, including Buddishm, because after I left religion, atheist religion like Buddism was in my mind from point zero. But for my (sometimes messy mind), meditation has been such an hard ball.

There's a term "Christian Agnostic" that fits your description. Not believing in the supernatural aspects of the Bible, but appreciating that there are good and valuable lessons within it

For me personally, I don't believe in anything after death, but it brings me great comfort to imagine one exists.

I sort of have the opposite experience. I used to call myself agnostic but way too often it would lead to theists thinking that means I am a believer in denial and that it makes me willing to convert. So instead I call myself an atheist to make my skepticism perfectly clear. I don't care what others' beliefs are as long as it doesn't harm people and they aren't aggressively trying to convert others. I do agree that some people are asses about their non-belief and I firmly think mutual respect and the concept of "please leave me be" should go both ways.

I continue to be amazed that so much effort goes into making props, miniatures, vfx, everything . And they don't spend more than a weekend on the scripts. At least, that's what it feels like.

I share a lot of the same beliefs as you. I can't know for sure however I do know that we are lucky to exist. It is extremely lucky that our speck of solid, liquid, and gas is just perfectly placed from its properly sized star that "intelligent" life was able to form. One thing I always try to show "creationists" is that time is a man made concept for us to make our lives easier to comprehend. One earth year is several years elsewhere or several hours even minutes somewhere else entirely. So if a God exists (which is where I lose most of them with the "if") if God exists then who knows how long one day is to them. Maybe one God day is several billion earth years. We cannot know definitively how the universe came into existence. Even if you truly believe the big bang theory how do those two particles surrounded by nothingness come into existence? Something started it all. What that thing is I haven't the slightest clue. If someone wants to call it a god by all means. However the issue i have is when people use or try to use their concept of their God to control others.

It's a common misconception but being an atheist has nothing to do with certainty or knowledge. It means "absense of belief", or lacking belief in God. Agnostic means the existence of God is unknown or unknowable. These are different answers to different questions. So Adam would be an agnostic atheist, meaning he doesn't know if God exists, and he also doesn't hold the belief that he does either.

I used to think about whether there's a God or not when I was younger. But I don't anymore. I realized this dilemma has no effect on how I live my life. I live without a fear of God, cause I know that if they don't exist, there's no reason to fear them, and if they do, I have no reason fear them cause I don't do evil things. That's basically it.

As a life long atheist I find myself becoming more anti-theist as I get older. The way that religious people are becoming more militant and authoritarian to hold on to their mythology and push it onto the rest of society makes me want to actively push back on their silly claims even more. The fact that we have members of government pushing hard on their religious beliefs while even embracing "Christian Nationlisim" openly makes me very worried... I get Adam wanting to distance himself from controversy but it makes me sad that a science communicator has to be so wafflie.

We've traveled very different paths to end up about the same place and I know that technically I'm agnostic but sometimes it is easier to say I'm an atheist to people who can't or won't understand the difference.

I don’t want to push anyone but if you can say „I can’t KNOW for certain that something doesn’t exist“ and that you kinda like the New Testament and how Jesus acts in it, that’s all I can wish for. Heck it might be all I know, it’s just that I find comfort in the thought that all that might be true. I kind of like the idea you know? It’s a nice thought and I don’t see any point in ruining it. may I suggest, to be open to polytheism, if there are higher beings, its makes a heluva lot more sense if they are constantly arguing, tweaking, modifying, and changing the rules i.e. "evolution" etc

An interesting concept that you are a conglomerate of those who you have come in contact with in your life. In some ways you take on the attributes that you have associated with each person.

The spiritual "world" is definitely real, but the only way to really know is to directly experience it.

Agnostic and atheist are completely different things, I consider myself an agnostic atheist, I don’t believe there is a god but I’m not willing to ignore the possibility is not zero percent however unlikely, I think calling yourself an atheist is important as it explains to theists that you have the same rights to your beliefs as they do

I'm an individualist. We don't think as a collective. We are not ants or bees or the Borg from Star Trek. All of our thoughts happen in our heads. We can learn from others, but only if those ideas are communicated to us so they can get in our heads. We can say that we have consciousness in common with other beings, but without Elon Musk wiring our brains together, we each think as individuals. As for a conscious God, who answers prayers and loves us, there is no evidence supporting that hypothesis.

No mind simpler than an atheist. Existence requires a god, everything has to come from some where. You need something outside of that rule for anything to exist. That would be God.

I have a slightly different folder.

On the topic of God and consciousness, I tend to start from a place of Cartesian Skepticism - assume nothing - and then try to work things up from first principles. So if you start with a blank sheet, the simplest thing you can have is a single point. A singularity. Mathematically, the God of the zeroeth-dimensional God like in "Flatland." Empirically, the singularity that existed prior to the Big Bang. It's omnipresent cuz you need at least two other points to define some sort of meaningful space. It's omnitemporal because there's nothing for it to change relative to. It sees all and knows all, for it IS all, has power over all. Thus, semantically, it's not a huge leap to just define that as God, since those are all characteristics normally attributed to God. Of course, that's very different from the personified God who interacts with and takes personal interest in human beings on an individual level that many people believe in; but at least this point-God can be fairly trivially demonstrated and it's hard to argue against its existence. And once you have a point, you can build up the rest of the universe in a way that's consistent with our understanding of the laws of math and science, so you could arguably define it as "The Creator of All Things."
