Dundee United 2-0 Roma, European Cup S/F 1984

  • This should have been the year of the all-British, European Cup final: Liverpool v Dundee United. Regrettably, it never happened. Whereas the English side advanced from their semi-final, the Scots fell victim to a bribed French referee in the second leg of theirs. Nevertheless, they can look back on this game with immense pride - probably United's best ever night in Europe. It was watched by Arthur Montford.

      dont forget a year earlier Aberdeen beat Real Madrid to win the ECWC and Dundee United were winning the title. Two provincial clubs up against the old firm at home and the cream of Europe abroad and beating them.The Bosman ruling has made it impossible for smaller clubs. We used to be able to sell our best players and spend it on bringing through new talent. oh well maybe ourtime will come again.

      Tradurre in inglese, please. La Roma degli anni 80 e di quell anno in particolare, era, come tasso tecnico, la squadra più forte d'Europa.. Probabilmente inferiore solo alla Juventus.. Sicuramente superiore al Liverpool.. Che dalla sua aveva maggior esperienza e mentalità vincente. Tra la Roma e il Dundee United c'era una differenza enorme.

    I was at this game, though I don't remember much. I do remember, though, that Sturrock missed a great chance for United to make it 3-0. It was incredible to see a Scottish provincial team playing with such skill and confidence against top foreign opposition. All I will say about the return leg is it cast little but shame upon Roma. The Italian press seized on a throwaway remark by Jim McLean that United were "on drugs" in the first leg, obviously a joke, but the Italians whipped up their supporters - and players - into a frenzy about it. There were some appallingly abusive banners flown by Roma fans at the second game. And, after the final whistle, McLean and others were assaulted by Roma PLAYERS. This alone should have got Roma thrown out of the competition - but they went on to lose the final v Liverpool. It could have been United v Liverpool - in the European Cup Final - would have been the biggest Scottish football event, ever.

      @Aidankiwi Před 3 lety +3

      @@johnmorgan5408 What adverse remarks did Jim McLean make?
      In an interview after the first leg, an Italian journalist accused the United players of being on drugs. Jim was asked to respond and he did do by saying the allegation was nonsense and made a joke that if that was the case, he would have them on drugs every week. The Italian media took it literally and whipped the Roma players and fans into a frenzy of hatred. The conduct of the Roma players at the final whistle was a disgrace.
      The only comment McLean had ever made on the subject is that he had never watched a video of that match as it left a bad taste in his mouth. A fairly reserved and measured comment in the circumstances.

      @@MrGreen1314 Cheers. Im sure i even saw a newspaper report it as fact without backing it up themselves. I just have a hunch its one of those chinese whispers things that has come out as 'proven', when it wasnt quite the case. Not with regards this specific match anyway.

    If Utd had won they would have played Liverpool in final. Awesome.
