IT'S AS SARCASTIC AS IT IS HOPEFUL! i feel a lot of people miss this too, because even the lyrics of the song tell us how we are going to "throw it away", it's also about remaining optimistic given our history of choking at critical moments of international competition. But when we start doing THIS well, and actually progress into the semi-finals, it becomes more and more real.

Yeah, the video didn´t really explain it! Soooo, here goes: in the mid-90´s, there was a hugely popular comedy-sports program called "Fantasy Football League", hosted by comedians David Baddiel and Frank Skinner. They then released the song "Three Lions" as the official Euro 96 England anthem, alongside then popular group The Lightning Seeds (mainly just a guy called Iain Broudie), which had the refrain "It´s coming home, it´s coming home, it´s coming, football´s coming home" which was all about how England hadn´t done well for a long time, but were ready now. The song was so big even us in Scotland didn´t mind it. The team did not win Euro 96. Then, two years later, the World Cup came around. The official anthem was "We´re On the Ball", by Ant & Dec, but Baddiel, Skinner and the Lightning Seeds brought out "Three Lions 98", which was again adopted as the people´s song of choice. The updated lyrics address how they weren´t as successful as they thought they would be last time, but NOW they were ready (they weren´t). Meanwhile, Scotland´s national anthem for the World Cup was Del Amitri´s "Don´t Come Home too Soon", a song recognising that we sucked, and would be happy to make it past one round. We didn´t.

To be fair, I think the semis in 2018 were a huge learning moment for your young team. I'm Croatian, and we can tell that was an experience that stuck, because it was a huge humbling moment for them, and this generation will always have that bone to pick when they play against us. This year, unlike the entitlement they exuded all over the place in 2018, they have "earned" it. The confidence comes trough experience as a team, rather than an inflated sense of self. That is why I think people don't mind the "its coming home" bit as much. Also, who cares as long as the French are out. ;) Good luck tonight.

It was always meant as a bit of fun, being able to laugh at our failings, whilst still living in hope that our next tournament would bring success.
The likes of Scotland take great offence to the fact we sing "It's Coming Home" because they believe it's us being arrogant, when in reality it's all tongue in cheek banter and certainly shouldn't be taken so seriously, particularly in the early rounds of a competition 😂🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿

There have been 15 total European Championships before the current one started. Out of those 15, we didn't enter the very first, we failed to qualify for 5, we crashed out in the group stages 4 times, and we won 1 knockout game, which was on penalties in 1996 when the tournament was in England. This tournament, we have won 3 knockout games, which is 2 more than the previous 15 put together, got to the final (best performance is 2 semi-final appearances) and have the most clean sheets (games with no goals conceded) in the tournament overall with no one able to catch us up before we even started our semi final game. This is most definitely the best team we've had since 1968, when we came third in those euros having won the world cup 2 years earlier. Foreign fans might call it arrogance on our behalf, but unless you're at least 53 years old, you won't have ever seen a team representing our country this good before. Maybe not in individual quality, but as a team most definitely

David + Baddiel wrote it knowing what it is to be an england fan = that it was 30 years, at the time (1966 and all that) since we had won the world cup and all the - very british - expectations that supporting England is an exercise in hoping that they dont mess it up but expecting they will. So this vid was from 2018 world cup, not the current Euro cup.
The song was called Three Lions, referring to the iconic England shirt badge. Traditionally England used to release a 'song' for each tournament. and traditionally they were usually crap and spoke of how great England was gonna be.
The reason why Three Lions hit for me was a, that tournament was hosted in England. b, you have to remember that the UK in '96 was going through a real renaissance. The hope of Tony Blair, Britpop, a New Premier league etc. and c, this was the first song that actually acknowledged the feeling of England always falling at the last hurdle; the pain and disappointment. I think this above all, made the song strike the hearts of us poor England fans who'd seen it all before.

Football originated in ancient times. The idea of kicking a ball into something like a goal originated back to the ancients times of the Mayas, Egyptians, and Chinese. England gave it rules, and how it is played today, yes, came from England. There is some debate over this topic.

    • @jamesleate
      @jamesleate Před 3 lety

Not really, there are similar sports dating back thousands of years but the British created the modern game called Football. As we aren't playing with severed heads and teams of 500 a side it is the English game that is played internationally today.
People have been fighting since the beginning of time but that doesn't have anything to do with where boxing originated from. This is exactly the same.

As a LFC fan, I've been spoilt since 82. So many massive nights and trophies. Watching so many legends etc.
I suppose I haven't been a massive England fan but as I get older I appreciate the team more. What they do for fans of massive clubs ie Liverpool but also to smaller clubs ie Grimsby.
Suppose what I'm trying to say is I was a bit of a snob but that was youth.
We go to Barcelona etc often as a club and I suppose too, England playing is Grimsby's "Barcelona".
I am always club before country, just how it is. Tribalism really.
I hope football is coming home, if not just fyi it'll be in either Italy or Denmark 😂😂😂
    C'mon England!!!

It's a song about hope over experience. Experience tells us that we are gonna underperform, throw it away, blow it away. It's about having a dream so fragile that just to whisper it, will cause it to shatter, but we know we can play, we know we have/had great players. We've done it before and we can do it again. A lot of foreigners misinterpret the song as arrogance because all they hear and see is the "It's coming home" but listen to the lyrics, its self deprecating. Despite the jokes and sneers, we still believe.
The It's coming home tag is pretty self explanatory. 96 was the first time a major football tournament was played in England since the 66 World Cup (which we won) and Britain being the nation that co defined rules that everyone had to adhere to. So no matter what part of the country you went to, if you play association football, you play by these rules.

I think Americans don't quite get this song, as it's about a fan experience that is very different from watching some team of random players from all over the place put together by some mega-rich owner to play their games in your city (or some other city, as happened to the Cleveland Browns, since you mentioned them). There is no despair about the team, but no unconditional belief either - more a battle cry than a statement of assumed superiority. England, as a team, were not traditionally terrible - they were simply not living up to expectations in international tournaments. The song reflects the emotional journey fans go through, starting with varying degrees of hope, but ending inevitably most of the time in disappointment. But it was also a clear reflection of the fans' optimistic mindset in 1996, with Italia 90 being their best result in a quarter of a century, the premiership revitalising the English game, English clubs being re-allowed in European competitions after the Heyssel disaster, and the 1996 tournament being held in England. Moreover, the song was very catchy, and when England put up some good performances (especially the 4-1 against Holland) the terraces adopted the song as their own, and it stayed with us ever since. It might go away when England finally win a tournament, but I doubt it.

However Footballs coming Home in 1996 really got it spot on especially with the videos that Badiel and Skinner made it reached the emotions of the fans and nation which is why it has become the football anthem

It is kinda sad really... Because the games that are popular in the US are only really played in North America, the international element is lacking. I mean I remember when the Toronto Blue Jays won the World Series and a lot of Americans really took that bad... I mean there were only 2 teams that weren't American the could have participated in it at the time. (and it looked like there was going to be an All Canadian World Series... but a strike stopped that from happening.)

  • @klogington

The opening of the song starts with a trio of clips from football commentary. The clips are "I think it's bad news for the English game", "we're not creative enough, we're not positive enough", and "we'll go on getting bad results". A lot of people write off Englaish fans as arrogant when they chant the chorus from this song, and I will accept that there are fans who miss the point of the song. But for anyone that has ever actually listened to the song, they will know it most certainly does not portray an arrogant tone.

Against a team who realistically we should of beaten from the moment we knew who we were playing in the semi final.
Denmark did themselves proud, but England were pedestrian and only won due to an extremely soft penalty.
Would love to see them win it Sunday but Italy are a completely different breed. We’ve been distinctly average in a lot of our games, and think Italy will go into the game as favourites - they’ve looked like the best team to me, and if we struggled to break Denmark down, then I’m sure Bonucci and Chiellini won’t be losing any sleep between now and the final.
Couple that with the fact they have a genuine flair going forward, and how brilliant Jorghino has been in the middle of the park for them, and England have got their work cut out.
