"It's coming home" is strictly an England national team phrase, that emerged from this song being release. The reason is that England was the birthplace of football, where the rules were codified in 1863. The only time England won the World Cup was when it was hosted in England in 1966, where we won the Jules Rimet trophy (hence the lyrics). The idea was that the 1996 European Championships, for which this song was released, was hosted by England, so there was a double meaning of the big tournament being hosted there and England actually winning a big trophy again.

In 96 it was about hosting a tournament, taking pride in starting football and being a great host. In the 2020/21 EC it was a reflection to some kind of entitlement and an unfair home advantage, while the part of the hosting England did wasn't particularly good. That toxic chauvinism wasn't there in 96 and was not what the song represents. The low point was an English journalist asking the opponents goalkeeper whether he would like England to win, because it was coming home and England had had such a hard time with covid, where in Denmark it was all fun of course. That summed up why hardly anyone outside England wanted them to win it.

England always seems to have been Snakebit when it comes to major international tournaments:
    - Diego Maradona's "Hand of God" Goal in 86
    - David Beckham getting sent off in 98
    - Harry Kane getting psyched out by his professional teammate Hugo Lloris last year.
    - England's history with Penalty Shootouts in general.
"Three Lions" is cute, but I've always been partial to New Order's "World in Motion" which they did for the 1990 World Cup, because that was when I was introduced to Futbol. That was the Year England got all the way to the Semi-Finals in Italy before losing - in a Penalty Shootout - to West Germany. But that song is a little harder to sing along to than "Three Lions"

It’s mainly sung at England games but occasionally in the premier league! It’s actually 2 pronged, the title is more in reference to the sport of football coming home as the rules and reg we’re first codified in England in about the 1850’s I think. All the other countries seemed to think it meant the trophy was coming home but if you listen to the lyrics there’s a hope that it will stay in England after the tournament was over but we’ve hoped so many times before and we’ve lost games that on the day we should never have and that’s what we mean by threw it away! They thought we were being arrogant but never are about football, we talk a good game but we have NO confidence when that whistle blows because if there’s a way to loose it England will find it!

It came home when the girls beat Germany 2 -1 in Euros won at Wembley last summer. The 1966 World Cup, ticked that off I was 11.., the lads have captured the irony of the song.

It took the Linonesses last year to end all them years of hurt, you need to react to the greatest footy song and that's New Order - World In Motion, the John Barnes ( LFC Legend) rap is really good

Ian Brodie of the lightning seeds wrote this (and is in it) and this will always be the biggest English football anthem - however I agree with many people here the lightning seeds would be a great 90s/Britpop band to react to - they’re a Liverpool band! My fave is sugar coated iceberg which I think is 96, same year as this. Big ones which are also great are life of Riley and lucky you

Just dawned on me that in 2026 the '30 years of hurt' will be 60; I feel old as shit! I was 11 when it came out, you could hear it being sung all down the street every time there was a match on.

Not a club song. It’s a England song sung at tournaments so yes you’ll hear it in four years time.

The song is full of real memories of past glories and failures. We ARE pessimistic but also, and it's NOT OPTOMISTIC....IT'S HOPE. We just can't let go of the hope!

It's never sung at a football game that doesn't involve 'England' because it's 'Three Lions'. This can only refer to the England shirt. Lovely reaction. x

you simply have to watch...."WORLD IN MOTION"...sung by NEW ORDER, another (manchester band)....written by the band, for the 1990 world cup, NEW ORDER were one of the 3 manchester bands, that led to the "MADCHESTER" sound, along with oasis, and the stone roses...this song, is on another level to "footballs coming home"........it even got to number one, in the uk charts...it was so catchy, that it was played in discos, and nightclubs all over the country......it even has a rap segment, in the middle of the song....you gotta give it a watch guys!!...it blows footballs coming home, out of the water!

Its only appropriate to the England football team.the official 96 song which meant litterally footballs coming home as the tournament was in England and we invented football. There was a 98 version by the lightning seeds and baddiel and skinner 2 comedians. Now it coming home means we are going to win the euros or world cup.
