- In this episode I make a crazy discovery which has me walking away with over $4k cash! But we then sail to Witches rock, Costa Rica, where one of our crew has a very scary incident in the surf, which was a sturdy reminder for all of us to NEVER underestimate the sheer power of the ocean.
SV Parlay is a hurricane damaged Lagoon 450 catamaran, which Colin rebuilt with friends and has started sailing around the world. They found bulkhead damage on their catamaran in Panama, so have fixed her up, and are almost ready to cross the Pacific Ocean!!

So glad everyone is OK and this ended well. As a 40 year open water survival instructor I can vouch for how dangerous it can get and it always seems the conditions that look the mildest are the most dangerous! NEVER underestimate the power of the ocean and respect it unconditionally at ALL times no matter how experienced or knowledgeable you are!
My father drilled those exact words into my sister and I 50 yrs ago. Never underestimate the ocean and Always Respect the ocean.
@@jackiebryant5808 replace ocean with water.
You are a great Capt, Colin. I could see in your face the genuine concern for your crew and friends getting back aboard safely. Well done.
You’re a bloody legend Jeff.
Haylz is never gonna forget this day. I hope she doesn’t let it stop her from having such a wonderful opportunity.
That was some front row seat nail biting experience you gave us Colin.
Thanks brother.
Fair winds Parlay 🤙🏽
Hahah thank you! It was a crazy time!
Haley, so happy you kept your composure, didn't give up, and with the great support team were safely onboard the dinghy. Great dinghy rescue. Good job mates. 😊
Thank you! 🙏
I love how you all rally around those girls to let them work through their fears. Great job on getting them back to the boat.
Well done girls!! What a way to start the trip, at least they will take everything going forward seriously. No need to remind them the ocean is an unforgiving beautiful beast! Safe travels guys.
Thank you!! 🙏
Growing up in the ocean, swimming, surfing, etc...
All the playing as a child, teaches you about waves and currents, when to stay calm and when to expend energy.
We've all been there, it always opens your eyes.
Hey Colin, this was a great video and scary as hell! Poor Hayley!! Fortunately she is ok but what a lesson on how you must respect the ocean and it's power. You are so incredibly patient and even mannered Colin!! Good on you mate!!
A very exciting episode all the way around. So glad everyone is okay. Nice one on the forgotten money in the banks Collins.
I was impressed by you on Below Deck, but after watching you here, I am so in awe of your capabilities!
The main thing in any emergency ...
Never panic . It hard not to but if you can think clearly and breath normal , you stand a better chance .
Great job everyone . You've proven yourselves already .
👍🏼certainly a learning experience, hat’s off
What an MVP Jeff is!!
I hiked into Witches Rock way back in 2005! Epic adventure.
I was a swim team member as a kid Every summer day at the pool, pond or lake , I grew up in the water learned to water ski in the duck river in Tenn. I could tread water for hours. I lived in south Fl. for a min and while swimming 30 yards off the beach I had the exact same thing happen , the washing machine started , my toes could touch every once in a wave but no matter how hard I stroked I just went backward when I stopped , a wave crashes on your head. Hard to breathe now Bam! another wave panic starts to set in, It's not fun. Just as some one saw my hand wave and start to run my way , my foot touched sand. I was moments from drowning. The Ocean can and will kill you.
Thank god no one was hurt or seriously injured. Hayley you are a lucky woman coming from the uk an living in Scotland she would know all about rough sea an very high waves. Crazy what the ocean can do it a blink of an eye she’s definitely not one you want to mess with
Haha yeah scotland is a different beast!
Witches Rock!! OMG that is soo cool to see again. I hiked in back in 1999 for 4 days of camping. Great surf, very secluded but what an adventure it was back then!! great to see the place again.
Ocean can be crazy, glad everyone is good 🤙🏻
an eye opening experience for many, nature is powerful it and needs to be respected at all times.
Long long time ago being a life guard from the west coast it’s always nice when there’s a happy ending!
So after we as views witness the sunny side of sailing. Rarely do we see the more serious side. Great video.
Colin,
Well it was great that you found some money that you forgot about. And I glad that your new crew member survived those strong waves. 🤗🇺🇸
Jeff yass both yall beautiful. One thing that I really respect to see. is the love ,car e& responsibility you take on for all souls aboard. These young kids just want to live life you want to help them have a great adventure grow and learn. The friends you keep and are making really are a true testament of your character. Happy safe travels yall. just beautiful.
In my 60s now but my life was spent swimming, surfing and fishing out of Greymouth, the sea has no friends watched friends drown on more than one occasion crossing the bar and more than once thought we weren't going to make it coming over the bar. If you don't respect the sea it's going to get you, love your channel Colin take care mate.
That Greymouth entrance is a cliffhanger - even from the comfort of an iPad. Mind you the fush n’ chups are the best!
Been there. Very scary when you feel that panic coming on. Even strong swimmers can drown.
Hello Colin thanks to your friend for helping the girls that was really risky glad they're okay God bless all of you stay safe enjoy your time there
Mechanic here, sounds like you have a vacuum leak on the brake booster causing the engine to draw in unmetered air which will make it run lean (too much air and not enough fuel) which will make it stall out etc. When you step on the brake it causes the leak in the brake booster to get larger the harder you press, which is why it started to stall in town. Hope this helps your friend diagnose the issue on his truck :)
2nd that
Glad all safe , stay safe
aid it before and I will say it again now. I so admire how you look out for your crew and the people in your world. Well done sir
Bravo 👏 glad everyone is ok ❤🤠
Thanks for sharing !
Good that everyone returned safe❤️
Thanks for being so REAL…the ocean can be very harsh…glad everyone is ok!!!!!
There's always lessons to be learned on or in the water. Kudos for staying calm and not totally panicking. Now go have some fun.
Reminds me of when I get caught in a rip and thought I was gonna die. Lucky by mate Paul guided me to safety. Dude saved my life. The relief of touching solid ground again is something I will never forget.
Cheers guys!
Glad that everyone came out of the surf alright. Whew!
So glad all the itchy dust and the lagoon vendetta is over and you are enjoying the ocean and it’s surroundings on your boat which everyone worked so hard for 👍🍻🎣
Glad that all turned out well!
Thanks crew..another great show Colin. Thanks for a peek into your world.
I love watching this! Go Collin!
This is an excellent value about the dangers of the ocean and how to overcome them safely. Colin you’re a good captain! Thanks for this incredible video!
Good on you. So glad you were able to get back safely.
Happy that all went well in the end. I have great respect for the ocean, and I always remember the power of the waves.
Wild ride this week.
Oh my goodness, was in Tamarindo in 1991 for a month and boy has it changed! Swimming across the estuary to see turtles lay their eggs on Playa Grande almost killed us- very strong rip tides. But man o man watching the leather backs come onto the shore (the size of a small tractor!) was magical. Loved Tamarindo. Thanks for all your videos and your energy and your passion and your humour and your....... etc!!
I'm sooo jealous!! I miss Costa Rica! Especially witches rock!!
Live and learn, sometimes the hard way!
Fortunately we got a happy end.
Thank you for your great videos. The more I watch them the more I am convinced that I will learn how to sail, someday.
Fair winds.
You can always depend on the sea to catch you out when you least expect it , glad it turned out for the good ..👍👍
Thanks for such an entertaining vid. Really top notch filming and content and important message about safety.
So glad Haley and the rest are ok. Been in that situation and it is scary. The ocean can be unforgiving but so grateful this time she was forgiving. Smart to have gotten out of there ✌️💜
Thanks
Great work to everyone for staying calm and composed and for Jeff gunning it over the crest of the wave with only seconds to spare. As soon as they were onboard I yelled “Gun it Jeff.!! And like a champ he did.
Rips are no joke.
Colin…got caught in a rip as did my sister on that very beach..Piha! These were the days when it wasn’t patrolled. I had a hell of a time getting back to shore and my sister was thrown hard against the rocks and badly cut up. And that’s concerned a good outcome.
Your a good captain, Bro.
So sorry that Hayley had a rough time! I hope she has conquered the waves now!
For sure!! haha thank you
Colin I love seeing you❤
True one, love it
Love the Billabong T shirt Kayla.......Welcome aboard Hayley, my Mum was from Scotland.....
Absolutely got to give you a thumbs up on that one. My Biggest fear as being a captain is having somebody get hurt on the boat are losing them. That would have been heartbreaking if something happened to Haley. She seems like the sweetest thing. Now she has a story she will remember the rest of your life. Go parlay!
Gotta love how the boys always line up a dime or two for the next sail 🤣All jokes aside been watching this channel since just after you bought the boat and love every bit of the adventure! Every one of you is living the absolute dream man, and am so happy for you to go on MANY more adventures with many more adventurous souls
Captain Colin
I’ve been watching you for years on your CZcams channel. You and your crew especially Jamie have built a phenomenal sailing vessel after all the bullshit with the broken bulkheads and every other thing that could happen, absolutely fantastic job but I might must say that besides fixing up A hurricane damaged vessel.
You have also have such compassion for teaching people and making sure that everybody is safe especially after watching this weeks episode there is a lot more to fix and about but it’s also about teaching crew and how to be safe to live on the ocean.
Congratulations for what you do it is absolutely amazing
And I am extremely jealous
Thanks Dan Harris
Colin - there's a way to make that type of situation easier... carry fins in the dinghy, attach a float to them, let them get carried in by a wave. Have the stronger swimmer use the fins.
Surf rescue in most countries will have both their swimmers wear them, and on occasion, ask those being rescued to don them as well.
Oh fun just found your channel. Now I want to go make a red curry and basmati rice. Love that you gave the new crew a quiz on sheets, halyards etc. Im a sailor, and I am so happy I found another sailing channel to follow. Going to start back at video one. Cheers mates.
Now they'll have stories to tell their grandkids, stories are earned the hard way.
I’m really glad everyone is okay and hope that the experience doesn’t affect Hayley in the long run.
Can confirm i've been back in the ocean!! haha
Thank you
Growing up in Southern California we would spend our free time in school during things like assemblies learning about Riptide currents and how to swim out of them. After I moved to the southeastern USA we spent that time learning about Tornado drills. I am thankful for learning about the currents and as a very powerful swimmer I feel cool and collected when beach currents get wild. Salt water makes you very buoyant, sometimes ya just gotta stay afloat and let it take ya where it's going.
Glad you’re ok girls, lesson learned ✌️🙏🏽
Glad she’s ok I truly hope this doesn’t turn her away from the experience at the end it will make her a tougher person.
Wow, Parlays gotta a hurtin' Albertan!! Thats awesome! Have a great time! Just got back from Banff via Calgary airport-28c.
Well done girls. You kept calm and you made it. Not easy. Just shows how strong you are. Colin delighted you had a bit of good luck with your bank. Nice one. Just wondered what happened with the flare ? The woman in the beach mentioned it ? Or did I miss something ??
Love it the weekly updates.
Thank you
Glad everyone was ok. Happy to see a 🇨🇦 on board!
Thats 2 on board now!
A reminder that what you are doing is an actual adventure, but they are what make your strongest memories and your after dinner conversations, at least that is my experience, that and sunsets.
god bless glad everybody is all good 👍
She is damn lucky. And thanks to Jeff it all turned out good. I have been watching since you guys bought the boat. I hope Jamie is recooping ok back home hope to see him back onboard.
Super lucky! Was a crazy scary time!
Even small, low surf can be daunting, if not deadly, for anyone lacking the swimming strength and stamina, as well as the surf-navigating skill to handle it. There's no substitute for the experience and physical fitness gained by just playing in the waves over time.
I'm currently fixing up a catalina 22 for a new appartment and am planning on sailing it for vacations. This channel gives a lot of good inspiration to work on it and get it done. Would love to run into yall on the water one day soon hopefully
Nice episode!
Some lessons are better learned at the beginning of a journey. Haley's relationship with the ocean will most likely be one of mutual respect. Congrats on the windfall of greenbacks!
Playa grande pura vida! :)
Miss the DIY days but that was pretty entertaining and dramatic episode. Good stuuf!
✨ Exciting Surprise 💲 😬 Surf lessons never end, so happy all made it through!
Cool
another great episode, colin! love your work and your attitude, bud. greets from home ;)
Hello fellow Canadian… From Surrey, BC…
Scary for sure. I am a firm believer that when its your time its your time until then you can keep taking chances.
Intense!
WOW man!
☝️
I luv this show
Hello from Siesta Key Florida
Piha Beach. I sailed Hobie 14s there in early1980 with Crofton Umbers, the NZ National Hobie Champion at that time. Hobie Cat had asked me to do some work for them while I was in NZ. Piha is an amazing place. I raced in the Great Lakes. Crofton told me that I righted a 14 faster than he had ever seen it done. He asked me how I learned to do it so well. I told him it was the first time I ever righted a Hobie. LOL but, just like Hobie Jr. I feared sharks as they are plentiful around Piha in the Tasman Sea. So, I just kept saying sharks to myself. That 14 was literally muscled up and sailing again FAST! Crofton laughed his butt off!
Yes. Hobie Jr. is very afraid of sharks. But that is another whole story.
Great videos Colin. I am a Kiwi at heart.
Nice! Thanks for your comment!

Thank goodness you are out of the deep freeze here this past week! Ughh I have always admired Colin and being in beautiful weather asking myself why the hell am I still here in Calgary during our winters!!!!!
What are you a mechanic now? 🤣
That was great Colin.
I know exactly what she felt, i had same experience in Acapulco, them waves are no joke. Thank god everyone is ok. Never wear shorts with lot of pockets, when I was getting tossed around in water all pockets got full of sand and i was sinking down further and further down, I was sinking down like an Anker. Luckily a life guard save me.
Scary stuff!
That girl being close to the prop was what made me the most nervous.
