In this video we're breaking down the systems and technologies we've built up over the course of 14 years of full time sailing and living aboard our boat off grid. We will be covering 4 essential pieces of the puzzle that allow us not only to survive out here, but to live our lives comfortably! We will discuss electricity, how we make it, and what our set up is. We will talk about food: how we plan and figure out what we need, and how we store it. We will share how we're able to turn saltwater into drinkable freshwater, and lastly, how we're able to get the connectivity we need to stay safe, run our business, and entertain ourselves!
We've got LOTS of other videos and resources to learn more about certain topics covered, and links to products we've mentioned in the video. Check em all out here:

better help is incredibly expensive if you don't have the right insurance :/
Money wh*res
I'm struggling. Struggling to stay awake with all this boring electricity math in this video. 🤣
@@andre1987eph your BS was really irrelevant because this was great information value. Go back to sleep and stay asleep. Couch potato.
I have been living off grid for almost 20 years now. When I was 21 I purchased a 400 acre property in the Mojave Desert with nothing on it. The first structure I built was a small 20'x20' one room home. I started off with a old Kohler 10kw Diesel generator and I didn't have a well for the first 3 years so I had to truck water in. Fast-forward 20 years later I have 22kw of solar and 36kw of wind power with a 100kw diesel backup generator. With two wells and 100,000 gallons of underground water storage. The little 20x20 one room home now serves another purpose since I built a proper 6,000 sq ft home and a few other buildings.
I'm in my early 20s and have been considering doing the exact same thing. Any advice for someone inexperienced with off the grid living? Any regrets??
@@Not_Bomb678 Buying equipment is key, if I would have had a good medium or medium large excavator early on I could have accomplished more sooner. Equipment varies based on the environment you choose to live in. I wish I had more money when I first made the choice to build off grid so I could have built things sooner. I was a very skilled carpenter and builder going into this which made things go much easier.
@@ChrisHarding-lk3jj thanks for the reply, currently learning as much as I can about construction, carpentry, and metalworking etc as I'm sure these skills will be useful in general. I intend to do a lot of the work myself so I will definitely take your advice about budgeting appropriately for equipment. Thanks again!
But why
And we here we struggle to even buy 20X30 property, life is so strange. Who does the earth belong to ?
These are the same kind of people we see in sci-fi, flying around in their own spaceships, caring and fending for themselves and their vessel! Discovering new places, meeting new people (or species), etc...These are the precursors! Love it!
I used to sail professionally in my youth, I'm fully land based now though. Something we used to do from sailing is wrap iceburg lettuce in a good few layers of kitchen paper and ziplock bag it, then freeze it, if you have space. It can be so nice when all the fresh leaves are gone to throw together a crisp salad. Also if you plan a little bit and buy your flour 2 days before your freezer products, you can freeze the flour for 24 hours to kill off any of the little bugs that may hatch and thrive in flour. I do this now even on land, as i dont bake much so flour can sit in my cupboard for months unused. And when i go to use it, its alive. The larvae is there in all flour from the field, but only grows and hatches 6-8 months after processing (use by date) so freezing kills it off before it can impact your flour. Ziploc bag, freezer 24+ hours, good to go😊
As an engineer this is somehow some of my favorite episodes. Loved the old one with Brady too
I enjoy Delos videos, but I love sharing the "how to" videos with my buddies, they are always informative. Thanks Delos Crew!
+1
Ya ! Me also.
Happy New Year to all of you, I love these videos on the logistics and how it all works. Some people can't manage life on solid ground. I think the age of Delos is irrelevant, especially when I see all the improvements you have made over the years to make it the boat that fits your needs perfectly. I am sure if you had another newer boat the process would start all over again. As long as Delos is structurally sound it is the best boat for you. Keep safe.
Great Video - Enjoyed the animations :)
Such a well edited, and professional video from the middle of total nowhere, guys. Amazing time to be alive ⛵.
It's incredible to see how they share 4 key things every sailor should know. As an engineer, I loved the technical insights and got nostalgic thinking about the old episode with Brady. Also, kudos to the Delos team for delivering such a well-edited and professional video in the middle of nowhere! It's truly amazing what can be achieved in this day and age. Keep up the great work, guys! 🙌😄
Great episode ! One thing that interests me is how you plan for destinations, timelines, avoiding troublesome areas and weather. How much is just winging it, vs planning ahead or long term destination goals. And does there come a time after roughing it and isolating, that you rendezvous with past cruisers and friends at certain time lines, or are they all just chance encounters! Also Brian always does such a great job of researching your destinations and areas visited. Does he read up ahead of arrival to plan visits and local history, or just gain knowledge from the locals.
Yes, I'm not a sailor, but I am intrigued by the lifestyle, mainly the freedom it seems to provide. First-hand info is better than just books
if you want to live on a boat it can be done fairly cheap with somewhat limited mechanical skills, if you want to live on a boat the way these people do you will need 1 enough time because fixing it will be your full time job 2 mechanical/technical knowledge to do so 3 massively deep pockets to afford to fix the boat
If you keep your potatoes and onions in a dark place, they will last longer. Even the dark tinted bags they come in at the store will work, so long as they can breath. Prevents them from turning green and sprouting as quickly.
I know fridge space is at a premium, but avocados can be stretched quite a bit if you refrigerate them. Buy the super green and hard ones, and keep them cold. Take them out threeish days prior to use to let them ripen.
Washing veggies in a diluted white vinegar solution can add just a little shelf life to them as well.
Good episode guys... so cute when Sierra was listening to Mom talk about dry food storage. And thanks for sharing all the information.
Not just listening, real world education going on there and the little sponge is absorbing..
I've been a fan for about six years now and, in my opinion, you are the benchmark for this platform. This lifestyle was always a dream of mine when I was younger but, alas at 71 it may have passed me by. However I can live vicariously through your channel. Thanks for the wonderful content and for sharing both the joy and difficulties of this life. It takes a lot of courage to put this out there and I admire you even more for it.
I've been watching you guys for nearly a decade. Seeing the adventures you've been on, the people who have joined you (some for a few days, some for a few years), and the lifestyle you've lived inspired me to go out and pursue my dream of living on a sail catamaran. I'm not there yet, but I'm making the financial moves I need to make it happen! Thank you guys for being so amazing, and keep these excellent videos coming!
It's amazing that your fresh food can last as long as it does....and you must pray every day that your fridges and the freeze don't go kablooie.
Happy New Year Delos Crew /Tribe! All the best to you all in 2024! Stay safe, keep well and fair winds and following seas!
Great job on this one guys! We're hanging with Bill and Grace in Barra prepping for French Poly, so this one is well timed for us :)
It’s always fun getting updates from Delos !!
Fair winds⛵️
I absolutely loved this video. I'm not a sailor and have never even been on a sail boat. But I loved how the various systems on Delos work. I believe Brian could fix anything.
We love BetterHelp! Happy & SAFE New Year.
Great job with putting your boat life together. It helps me to get my best of pirate family life. I'm sure we all miss your brother and Blue and other ship mates however everything that can will evolve and change to get even more centered into what everyone needs. I couldn't do what you do by myself. I need to share things to be happy. Before too long your kind of life won't be viable for me as I am healthy as I can be for a 77 year old construction mechanic can be in 2024. It is a dream to believe in a month on Delos. I've been on board for the last 5 years living the fantasy !
Yes, you skipped the black and Grey water systems, curious how it works. Great video and I would enjoy more details and contacts.
Your videos are not only inspiring and exciting, they are also very informational.
ABSOLUTELY FANTASTIC YOU LOVE BIRDS!
I am approximately 7 years removed from retirement, and I will be off to live on a boat and start my new life. I pray you're out there, and my wife and I can meet you! That Nugget is just so dang precious and you have to be so proud and extremely fortunate to teach her all the world had to offer, not thru books per se, but thru experience. PRICELESS
Thanks so much for all these fascinating videos of your journey and the behind the scenes! Your entire journey has been incredibly inspirational! It has actually inspired me to follow my own dream and take a 1 year hiatus from software programing and head to Japan to continue my Japanese language studies! I always try to inspire my friends and family with "the story of how 1 guy dropped everything and decided to sail the seas...with a enough research, planning, and motivation...you can do anything"
Happy New Year Delos!!
Nice to see your smiles in this new year. Thanks for sharing your experience.
I was a shore based seafood plant engineer and chief during my working years in Alaska, love these types of videos, very stimulating. I owned a sailboat for awhile and sailed up the coast from WA to AK, so I can dig it! You guys are living the dream for me, at one time I was going to do that, round the world, but so many things in life to do and can't do it all! Living the dream for yourselves, others and me, so much thanks! And of interest too if water becomes less available or the need to generate ones own power, stocking up etc. Pura Vida!
That's one amazing boat! Wow just wow! I love keeping up with Delos and all of the changes over the years. What a happy life.
Nuggets triumph at the end always reminds me to hit like before it’s too late. Thanks guys for all the Beautiful videos over the years, They are so incredibly well done. It’s so fun seeing all of these AMAZING places you guys take us along to, I know it’s so much extra work…. but and we are all Grateful. Happy New Year! 🎉❤⛵️🥂 to another incredible year of adventures and good health !
Thanks Brian and Kazza, this is great information. Of course we love seeing your adventures, but these types of videos convey a more intimate feel as if we were your neighbors. Please keep mixing these in with the rest!
I loved your explanation on how stuff works, it’s great.
I can also understand the struggle to have a new episode each week and how easy you could loose track of things and control thus your way of life.
Also I can understand that supporting your way of live needs everything that you can use , so commercials are totally fine.
Great wok guys, it’s hard with a little kid so you’re doing great
Thanks guys!! The best sailing channel on CZcams!!! I never miss an episode!
i'm now 5min into the video and wow what a production effort. all the little animations the overlays! that's a lot of work, my highest appreciation!

Happy New year to a wonderful family from the UK👍🤗❤️
Thanks guys, really interesting video!
My family are traveling part of Australia in a caravan for couple of months, so we appreciate all the lessons and learning from power generation and water usage. It’s a daily battle for us as well.
Please keep creating positive and uplifting content, it’s appreciated.
Great video. Love these.
Can’t imagine being new to the channel.
I’ve known of you and pre-Blue Brady since you helped me through a rough patch.
Thanks for keeping going and growing. Yes, it’s just what ya do, but it’s also very special
Thx for another quality vid.
Love all your videos very clean extremely educational please keep those wonderful videos coming
Great Video, Very Informative. Provisioning is a SPORT! You are speaking my language. Loved to see all your labeled dry goods storage areas. I’m not on a boat but I’m a food hoarder too and I like to read a recipe and know that I have 100% of the ingredients on hand. We love all of your videos and thank you for sharing your adventures with us!
Very interesting technical setup 😎
Sierra is sure growing and so smart. Love that she was aware of your conversation and offered her insight. ♥
What a great video guys, thanks for taking the time to make it. Safe sailing!

Cod Bless!!
Super informative - thanks!
Wow! Amazing! Great video!
Yes on this one, like the info on how you guys do it, helps me juggle the things I decide to do on our liveaboard as we gear up for more off grid.... thanks.
It is amazing to see the details on how you do this. Thanks.
Really good episode! Thanks for the information..
IMO you three are able to do so because of Bryan's Ability and Skill in dealing with all the problems, not to take anything away from Kaza as it takes a woman's touch to make it all enjoyable and happy. Thanks "Guys" for sharing your lives with us. SAFE TRAVELS!
Loved this episode!
Absolutely awesome!! You've come a long way. Thank you for sharing a lot of the knowledge you have gained along the way. Happy new year!!

It really is astonishing how far our communications technology has evolved. It is a total game changer in how we interact with each other. My watch is right out of a Dick Tracy cartoon. Thanks for the tour.
Very Very Good! Enjoy the technology and the whole vibe! Safe travels to you!!!
