- Why I No Longer Use TOPICALS FADED SERUM in this full Topicals Faded Discolouration Serum Review
Hey guys and welcome back to Mad About Skin where today I wanted to give you a final review of the Topicals Faded serum and why despite me getting some good results with my hyperpigmentation I wont be using this serum going forward.
Topicals Faded serum has to be one of the most talked about and hyper skincare products of the past year, with people claiming it has faded hyperpigmentation and helped to tackle dark spots in the skin. I suffer with hyperpigmentation as a result of adult acne and so was keen to give it a go and see if its worthy of the hype.
However 18 month on from first using this hyperpigmentaiton serum I have decided to discontinue using it for a number of reasons which I want to share with you in todays video.
I would love to know what your thoughts and feelings are on this product so please leave me a comment below and let me know how it worked for you.
If you enjoyed this video and would like to see more follow up skincare review videos then please be sure to give ti a thumbs up and a like to let me know.

Hey guys and welcome to todays video.. I know this product is a favourite for so many so I would love to know if thats the case for you in the comments below.. For me this was a pass which is a shame as I did initially like the results but I wanted to share with you the reasons why in todays video.. Sending you lots of love xxxxxx
I've not seen coconut oil rather I'm shea butter, is that better as I'm thinking they've probably reformulated again
Oh my goodness, thanks for this video, Rob! I've definitely noticed Faded isn't working as it once did which is such a shame 😕 I kept thinking I must just not be seeing a difference but I now realize the reformulations haven't been working for my oily acne prone skin. And it's true about the increased breakouts which is thoroughly counterproductive.
I appreciate the updated review. So many people rave about this but I can’t use coconut oil and the like on my very picky skin. Also appreciate the thoughts on the packaging. So important!!
I tried the original one and my skin never tolerated well, I would always peel even more than with tretinoin and it never got better even 10 months later. Granted I did notice it got worse as the product got older , I have debated if it’s worth trying the new one or not, they do have a mini so maybe? Although the fragrance is a def turn off. Thanks for a fantastic video rob! Love that you circle back to products you have recommended in the past and update us
This is a really in-depth video, and I enjoyed watching it! It's about time someone started being real about these trendy skincare brands! Keep making content!
Thank you so much for your kind words and support. .sending love x
This is a good video for those with oilier skin types but I'm not one of them. I've used it in the past but once it started peeling I just used it on my knees and elbows and it helped tremendously. I am interested in the reformulated version to see if it still peels.
Hello Rob. Love your channel! I appreciate your concerns about Topicals and as you stated, there is no product that is right for everyone. However, I do have a quibble about your comment that Topicals does not list the percentage of ingredients. While this is more popular now, it is not uncommon for products not to list percentages at least in the US. Ingredients are listed in amounts from most to least which gives some indication of how much an ingredient is in the product compared to others. But even if percentages are listed, it still doesn't tell the whole story such as how the product is formulated and how well the ingredients work with each other. For example, some ingredients may booster the effects of others. That said, I appreciate your ending comment on all products your review in that if it works for you, continue to use it. I tend to view all skincare as a game of chance: some work and others do not. Keep up the good work and have a nice day!
Can you share your skincare routine you follow in a whole week - morning and evening. I have the exact skin type and issues as you - oily skin, hyperpigmentation, aging and strengthening skin barrier. Will be very helpful to know how you juggle all the products.. I’m quite overwhelmed tbh
After using Topicals Faded for two years, I recently purchased their new formulation, but to my disappointment, it seems to have the opposite effect on my skin. Instead of helping to alleviate my acne flare-ups, it seems to be causing them. Now it's time to find an alternative! Thank you so much for making this video!!
Oh thats such a shame but thank you so much for sharing and sending you lots of love xx

I love this product I'm still using the old formulation with the sulphur smell. I have oily hormonal acne, FADED really and it helped with my hyperpigmentation and didn't cause any issues with spots. Maybe the new formulation might not be as effective on my skin... I'm not sure.
This video has come out at a perfect time I’ve been trying to decide between this one and the Regimen Lab Level Serum
Have you tried either faded or level yet?
I got a mini of this from Sephora & was so excited to try it out because of all the hype. I tried it once & couldn't get past the smell.
Thanks for this video, I noticed that I break out every time I use this product so I looked up reviews on this product to see if others experienced the same issue and I found your video which confirms my suspicions 👍
Thank you so much for watching and sharing :) x
thank you for this vid and talking about the reformulation, i had just found this product and was looking into it, and it's good to know that it's changed, since I was seeing a lot of older reviews and fewer newer, post re-formulation reviews! Sounds like this won't work for my adult hormonal acne prone skin!
So glad that the video came in useful.. thanks for watching xxxxxx
I've been using Topicals but haven't seen any difference.
So glad I didn't spend a lot on this one.
Thank for sharing x
Oh I am sorry to hear that hun but thank you for sharing and sending you lots of love xx
Thank you for this, Rob! This is valuable information. I have been coviting the faded cream since the beginning, but it’s always been either sold out, or outside my budget, with shipping it to Europe being always so expensive.
Now I see the faded cream has come to european shops as well, but I think I will save my money now. Coconut oil ALWAYS breaks me out, so I know the new formulation is not for me either.
Where do you get it in Europe? Thank you 🙂
Hi Rob I haven't tried it - too difficult to get here in the UK for a long time and when it was available they had added fragrance to it. As ever with overly hyped products, they can be a big disappointment. I do have freckles and hyperpigmentation, but it's not my main concern (redness is). With any product that has a vast number of ingredients, my skin tends to freak out and less very often is more for me. All in all I just never got caught up in the hype and didn't try it before the addition of fragrance, then it went completely off my radar after that fragrance was added. Best wishes.
Thank you Rob
Sending lots of love xxxxx
1st? :) congrats on your sunscreen lovely xxx so proud of youuuu!!! I have only used this product once but I haven’t gone back to it :) sending loveeee💕💕💕

Yes! I started you faded a few months ago and it really did well but then it seemed like it started working in reverse and causing a lot more breakouts. I wasn’t sure if it was because I jumped into using it daily but I had to just stop using it.
I have melasma on my upper lip and forehead, and have tried serums such as alpha arbutin and azaleaic acid by the ordinary, the hydroquinone serum by Cos de baja, the Vit c by Hado Labo, prescription tretinoin, by nothing is working so far. Topical isn't available in Europe but I was hoping to pick it up one day if I went to the US. I like the idea that everything is in one formula so that I don't have to play bathroom chemist.
OMG thank you for pointing out the Coconut oil. That’s a hard pass for me. I was going to try this too. Malasezzia yeast major trigger.
This is such a bummer to hear about the reformulations especially considering that I would have never had any idea and probably just kept buying it religiously had I not seen your video Rob! I have been using this serum from day 1 when it was first released and seriously credit it to fading almost all of my extreme scarring and hyperpigmentation caused by a bad bout of cystic acne I used to suffer from. I also used to use it as a spot treatment to dry out nasty one off breakouts that i used to get and dont really get now. I was lucky enough to benefit from it from the early formulations but now I'm seriously questioning to continue getting it sadly. (and I just bought a new tube this month 😭) My skin type is dry, combo, and acne prone btw. I really wish so many brands/companies wouldn't change stuff that works. It's interesting to hear too about the coconut oil because while it doesnt bother my skin personally, I actually did notice the newer one i just bought felt much more occlusive vs the old one which used to be a bit drying on my skin, especially used several days in a row. I'd like to think it's in good faith and due to that reason but it's still weird to not disclose reformulations.
I've tried to find this product and I could not. So I did the LAb Muffin l-ascorbic acid dyi recipe and follow up with the Revox Q10 serum, used this combination for just 3 months, and it faded even my most stubborn melasma from the forehead.
FADED by Topicals did not work for me either! I get almost a total reversal of my sunspots with: TO Azalaic Acid serum, TO Niacinamide serum both applied daily and Differin (aka Adapalene) every third night. Add to that a spot treat with the underrecognized Melano CC serum. Oh, and SUNSCREEN 70spf on face, neck decollete of course. This may seem like a lot of products, but all are bargain, budget price products that do double duty as well. ❤️
Thank you for sharing your routine!
What "SUNSCREEN 70spf" do you use??
Hi, did you use all these products on your whole face or just on the sunspots? What is your daily routine like? Do you use a moisturizer?
That’s crazy about their metal tube…I’ve used lots of products in metal tubes and had no problem with them splitting. I wonder if it’s because of the ingredients inside or the quality of the tubes themselves.
Works for me
My skin looks great ❤
I agree , sadly my skin broke out a lot with tiny bumps and cystic acne ( the big painful pumps) . I had to stop 😢
Happy Wednesday.. Never tried this as I heard the smell was pretty bad.. Love x
Thanks for sharing hun.. love you xx
Thanks for reviewing Handsome! This product was a firm pass after some mentioned the smell! I hope you had a rad Wednesday! ❤
Found this video becuase I was looking to see if I was the only one whose skin got darker sue to the use of the product and the cononut oil just makes so much sene now. My skin does get darker when i sue coconut oil on my face. Thank you for the video!
Hahaha! Wish I’d seen this before I just bought a mini at Sephora! So far I’ve been surprised that I’m not seeing anything happening …
Just bought it like 3 weeks ago, it has made me break out a bit and has brightened my face too. Now I’m back to square one, feeling depressed been having acne for 17 years…used adapalene for 2 years just burned my skin and gave me no results…found this got excited even looked up the CEO 🙃
What do you suggest for those of us with active acne and terrible dark blemish?
I'm so sad they won't make something without all these oils but with all of those great Tyrosinase Inhibitors.
I have melasma and am so acne prone that I won't try this because I'm sure it will clog my pores.
Melasma by itself is really a bummer and being acne prone stinks, but having both together is soooo challenging.
Hi, thank you for the review on the product. I was looking to try this our because it looks like it has a whole host of tyrosine inhibitors. I like making my skincare routine as simple as possible and noticed you said there are other products on the market that can lend a better outcome. What are some of the products? I like to get all in one product for hyperpigmentation. Thank you!
Do you think the regimen lab Level serum could be alternative? Thanks again for your lovely content!
The level serum was a game changer for me, so I highly recommend it (my skin is "normal", but very prone to hyperpigmentation, regardless of the amount of spf I use every single day).
@@raquelpinheiro9287 Thank you so much!
I saw the coconut oil and i was like, well this would be pointless to use. I'm here trying to use this to help me get rig of my hyperpigmentation while this will make me break out, leading to more hyperpigmentation.
Why do companies still put coconut oil in face products??
My last two containers of it molded before I finished the entire tubes. I liked the product but I'm not buying another and I'm no longer recommending it to others.
I recently gave up on over-the-counter skin discoloration products and have gone on a managed hydroquinone program.
The serum worked well. The spray did not do much at all and I went through two of them
Ive been using this for a PIH mark b/c I thought it had 2% HQ but cannot find it mentioned on websites recently. Anyway, it seems to be working well because i have dry skin.
bought the first launch so excited to support black/asian founders but then it made me darker and think i got more acne (im normal skin type) must be too heavy. also too many actives with no high percentage is not cute.
Never used this brand/product. I hope you had a Whimsical Wednesday 😁🥰
Happy Wednesday William and sending you so so much love xx
Happy Wednesday ❤
Happy Wednesday hun.. love you xx
I love this serum. It's part of my routine and I use it a few times a week.
Thank you so so much for sharing hun and Happy Wednesday... what's your skin type out of interest? Just wondered who this works best for so I can pass on to others... love you xx
@@MadAboutSkin hiya. I'm dry skinned so makes sense why it works for me lol
There goes my idea for a Christmas present for you this year! 😂 xxxxxx
Haha... oooops... well I have I mentioned I like the bubble brand lol (thought seriously you dont need to get me anything lol) love you Tom xxxxxx
I'll pass on this. It's expensive to get it here in England. I'll splurge on Dr. V kit in a couple of months.Being mixed race I have to be careful 😊😊❤
I’m oily acne skin. My skin hates coconut oil
I bought this back in February and have seen a minimal difference in my skin 9 months later.. I think I'm going to splurge on Murad.
Update: Been using Murad twice a week for about 3 weeks now and I'm already seeing a difference in post-acne scarring I've had for years!!
Thank you for the updates
If you don’t mind me asking are you black or white
thank you for the update!
🤣🤣🤣🤣 I'm over it too. I used one tube (about 4 months), started great but later didn't see benefit anymore. I'm using a Skin functional retinol moisturizer (and bakuchiol), so much better for my night routine.
I don't know why, but this serum just made my skin look... bad?? My skin looked dull. It didn't feel any drier than usual... but it LOOKED dry. Now I use hydroquinone and I'm happy.
I use John Plunketts super fade Hydroquinone 20 mg and Salicylic Acid 15mg and Padimate O 30mg slow process ..thanks Alice
Nice. How are you finding it still? I tried this and it made my red spots and melasma much worse. It seemed to trigger inflammation and stopped after 10 days. I feel I want to try it again and persist for 8-12 weeks.
Where can this be purchased in the uk ive never seen it
When I saw the caption I was ready to fight you, but then I heard what you had do say.... Ok, you're right about the coconut oil. I really wish they hadn't done that....Ugh!
Hey how to find out if I had the new one or the old one??
@@gth6617 You can read the ingredient list. Also, the older version smelled really bad, but it's worth it in my opinion.
@@derrickjackson1887 can you please tell me any ingredients that were listed in new formula but not were in the old one. So that I can confirm.
@@gth6617 Coconut oil is in the new one
Need a tube that stands steady with small footprint since I use lots of products. Been using twice a day for a while and not greatest results. Better off with individual products.
Another very helpful video! thanks always :)
Thank you I’ve been having so much break outs but no matter what i go on the internet and I feel like I’m being gaslighted to use it more
I dont think this is the right product for people with active breakouts so I am so glad I could help x
I wish I would've seen this video yesterday, just bought this for the first time at the Sephora sale 😥 I've gotten my acne down to a minimum and wanted to start tackling hyperpigmentation, but I've been overwhelmed by the number of ingredients for hyperpigmentation. I'm already using several other actives, and I wanted a formula that was a one-and-done. I'll probably still give it a go since my skin is on the drier side, fingers crossed it works! 🤞
Please update if this product works for you!
Yep same here!
Get some laser treatments at a med spa. That gets rid of them. Gone forever in my case.
Sephora gives up to 3 samples a day, that’s what I do before I buy anything there.
them including all of the staple actives for hyperpigmentation: niacinamide, azelic acid, vitamin c, alpha arbutin , is what sold me on wanting to buy it seeing that i already use all these ingredients separately and buying them in one formulation could save money. bummed this may not be a good product. hoping to find a similar one to it soon
Wait a second you mean to tell me that they reformulated to take coconut oil out and then they reformulated to put it back in? This is madness!!
I wish I had listened to this first before I shelled out for Faded.
Makes a lot of sense
I’m confused because I just bought this this week at the Sephora sale and it smells RAAANK. I’m wondering if I got an old bottle or did the new formulation not cut the smell much?
I have used it three times and unfortunately have feared it’s caused my skin to become congested. Thanks for the video!
thats how it smells yeah a lot of people complain about the smell
it is supposed to smell like that
I thought they had added the fragrance to avoid the smell (I never minded the smell)
how does skin get congested
I've been wanting to try this since it came out but after hearing about the reformulations I've decided not to.
Me too
I liked it til they added that weird ingredient to cover the smell. It’s sooo sickly sweet I can’t handle it at all. I could legit smell it all night and morning I had to wash it off at like 4 am because it was making me physically sick. I really wanted to love it. I emailed the company to return and they said to keep it and refunded my money which has never happened to me so I really appreciated that. They’re trying to reduce waste which is commendable
I’ve only seen it work on melanated skin. 🤷🏽♀️
Hey… i have been getting acne since august and they are now getting better but not alot. So pls let me know if i should this or not… and suggest me if there is any other alternative for acne and acne scars
Pls pls reply
I have two tiny light brown sunspots on my chest to the left (in my early 60s and just now started wearing sunscreen lol - whoops) and really no wrinkles to talk about - which brings me to my point: I’ve been using Faded on those stupid little sunspots and it’s done NOTHING. However - and take note, ppl - I’ve been using Retin-A on and off for my mild acne since my teens and, most recently, Tazorac (very strong synthetic retinoid) and I heard that it also is the topical gold standard for fading discoloration, sooooo guess what? I’m putting it on my chest now and, YEP. Those little buggers are about gone. LOL
Screw Faded. It’s BS.
Yep!! I got a prescription retinol and it's working wonders. I got 2 tubes for the price of 1 tube of Faded.
I have bought 3 tubes and used it religiously for all 3 months. It did NOTHING for my melasma. Literally zero effect whatsoever on my hyperpigmentation. However, it did make my eyes water really bad if it got anywhere near them. I would not recommend it to anyone.
I think I still have the original formulation because it has the sulfur smell, but I won’t be repurchasing after I finish my tube because of the changes.
Hey how to know if I have the new one or the old one . Help me i just got my order today and don't know how sulfur smells
@@gth6617 Sulfur smells like eggs. If you just bought it today there’s no way you have the original formula.
@@watchingreviews528 i feel bad as this product costs a lot😔 and i saw this product as a hope for my dark spots. Now what should I do.
@@gth6617 It still has the brightening ingredients so maybe it will work for dark spots. However just know that it has fragrance.
