I was a huge fan of Mogilny and Bure in Vancouver and then Sundin in Toronto, then he played in Manitoba for a year while I was at my Moose fandom peak as a young teen from Winnipeg so he was never too far from my attention as a hockey fan and then… he was gone. I'm not sure this belong in this context, but somehow I got to my mind a Swedish former elite defender in hockey back in the 80's anf 90's - Anders Eldebrink.
He played in a lot of international championships, including 6 IIHF world Championships, 1 Olympic Games and 2 Canada Cup.
He was somehow undrafted in 1978 or 1979 by NHL teams, but came around to make a great impression a few short years later with his skilled defenseplay and play-IQ that was argued to rival the Sovietunion's defenders! And those was near evrey international championship beside CC topping all ranks.
He got picked up by Vancouver Canucks in 1981 and would remain with them for 2 seasons, but due to the smaller ice-rinks he struggled to adapt to the faster and nore physical gameplay. And after 1982.83 season, he packed his bag after failing to prove himself in Qiebec Nordiques.
Yet he went back to Sweden and international contests and proved to be one of the best defenders in the world outside the NHL! Winning championships, medals, awards and recognition. Even Borje Salming & Vjateslav Fetisov who made it to the NHL claimed Eldebrink was a truly inteligent defender and playmaker.
But what would things have been if he had made it to the NHL?
    - 21 Years of professional Hockey career (1977-1998).
    - IIHF World Championship Gold medalist: 1987 + 3 Silver medals: 1981, 1986 & 1990
    - Olympic Bronze medalist: 1988
    - 3-time Switzerland National League A Champion: 1993, 1994 & 1995 (EHC Kloten).
    - Swedish Elitserien Leage Champion: 1985 (Södertelje SK).
    - 14 Swedish seasons - Södertelje SK
    - 6 Switzerland seasons - EHC Kloten
    - 2 NHL seasons - Vancouver Canucks & Quebec Nordiques.
    - 1 AHL season - Fredericton Express.
    - 1988 Olympic All-Star Team + Swedens best point scorer.
    - 1989 WC All-Star Team
    - Swedish Elitserien Leage - Guldpucken Award (Swedens hockey MVP): 1985
    - 2-time Swedish Elitserien Leage - Guldhjalmen (League MVP): 1988 & 1989
    - Number #2 retired by Södertälje SK.

love it - physical skilled players = Tkachuks. I grew up in the Detroit area in the 90s. I witnessed the birth of a combination of skill as in the Russian Five as well as grit as in the Grind Line (if you don't know about them, there are BOOKS written on them). If you look at teams like the Devils, Avalanche, Stars of the 90s/early 2000s you see this combination playing out in arguably the best era of hockey to date. Then guys like Pavel Datsyuk come along and literally do things skill-wise that no one has ever done before! This gave birth to your skilled players like McDavid (who has Datsyuk-like skill combined with Gartner-like speed and Crosby-like strength and edges). But why haven't teams like Toronto or Edmonton who have arguably the most skilled rosters in the current era gone past the Western Conference Finals? And more poignantly why are teams like the Florida Panthers upsetting teams like Boston? The answer is grit. This is why it is imperative teams find the Bisses or Reaves' or McSorleys (Gretzky's enforcer) or Kocurs/McCartys (Yzerman's enforcers) to protect their stars and change the outcome of games. Physicality in hockey is like a big dunk or 3 in basketball or a big hit or play in football or a homerun in baseball. IT CHANGES THE MOMENTUM OF THE GAME! It'll be interesting to see what Toronto does next year with adding some grit (Reaves) and skilled grit (Bertuzzi...before 2 broken hands). I for one am looking forward to this era of skill and grit. Let's throwback to the 90s (no Matthew Tkachuk, not the haircut)

Brian Lashoff had a bit of a strange career. He was undrafted and signed by the Red Wings in 2008. He spent the next three years in juniors before reporting to the ECHL. He was eventually called up by the Grand Rapids Griffins where he stuck for the next couple years. In the 2012-2013 season he got a callup with the Wings and managed to stick around. He played the entire 2013-2014 season in Detroit before splitting the 2014-15 season between Detroit and Grand Rapids. By 2015-16 he was back with the Griffins full time. So, seemingly just a guy who had some potential but didn't pan out and ended up back in the minors.
    Except. . . .
The Wings kept him around in Grand Rapids for call ups in case of injury. And they did call him up, reliably, every year, for the next FOUR YEARS! So in spite of basically being an AHLer since 2015 Lashoff was still suiting up for the Red Wings all the way into 2020.

Lashoff is just a great dude and great leader. He was the Captain in GR for a while and was loved by pretty well everyone. He’s not the greatest player by any means but he was a good option for a call up because he wasn’t likely to get claimed and he could do okay on a bottom pairing. The wings kept him around because he was well liked and was a good mentor for the younger guys.

I see an uptick number of fight being the direct correlation to the skill gap between top 6, bottom 6 players, fact not all d men are used to physical play with the way the game has opened up since 2005(after the lock out) and the way contracts are handled.
You have a generation of players players that are bigger, faster stronger and more skilled but at the same time put themselves in vulnerable positions with guys that aren't as used about hitting. More dirty hits leads to more fights

Rob Brown is a more 'extreme' version of Lonny Bohonos... He was really skilled and really talented but NO ONE could stand him as a person, lol.. He was narcissistic, conceited and arrogant to the core of his being - in short - he was (one of) the biggest locker room cancers in history.. Think the opposite of BizNasty... Of course there are many strange careers, but Rob Brown came to mind since you ended the vido with Lonny Bohonos lol..

@Swoop187OG187 A later version was Robbie Schremp. An immensely talented player who thought he was above the team whose attitude basically made him uncoachable.

@@BunnEFartz I remember Schremp, he played with Kane in London, he was taken by the Oilers but never really panned out.. He was very gifted and I wondered why his career never went anywhere.. But Rob Brown was on a different level, lol.. Look at his stats, ridiculous.
