  • Most of the pests that get into your home and the most annoying ones outside, live in your lawn, ornamental plants, landscaping, and so forth. You can kill them all with a cheap garden hose sprayer. It's fast and just as easy as watering your lawn.

    Thank you Guy for another detailed and helpful video. You’ve been the go to source for pest control information since I’ve found your videos.
    Question about mosquitos:
    We live in Houston, where there are massive mosquitos everywhere. We address standing water and treat our property, but we back up to creek/wooded area that isn’t practical for me to treat on a large scale. Is there a commercial grade product you can recommend that will act as a repellent around our small, covered front patio? It would be nice to keep mosquitos from swarming around the doors when we enter/exit.

    • @GuysPestSolutions
      @GuysPestSolutions  Před rokem

      If you have removed all the water around your property and you have treated your entire yard with Bifen XTS, then the woods must be very close to you. There really isn't much more you can do, other than keep them away. Mosquitoes are very bad flyers. That is why you will not get bitten very much on a windy night. It does not take much of a breeze to prevent them from landing on you. Therefore, if you have an area where you want to keep them away, simply aim a fan at it. There are exterior rated fans that you can use outside. So if you want to keep them off the patio, just place fans around in strategic locations. This will keep them away from the patio, but they still will be flying around outside the patio. If they land on your lawn, then they are going to die because you treated with the Bifen XTS. So the only ones that can come at you are the ones that are coming from the woods.

      I hope that helps. Be well my friend.

      The pesticide is safe for kids and pets after it dries. So, just to be on the safe side, let the dogs out in the morning before you do the treatment, and then keep them inside until about four hours after the treatment is done. Keep the kids inside for the day. The pesticide will usually dry within a couple of hours, but the longer you let it dry the better. It will dry faster on hot days. Please watch my video on the safety of using pesticides.

      Do they fly in groups, like a swarm of them? If so, then these are most likely midges. If that is the case, you can get rid of them, but it's not cheap. That may be why the pest controller is reluctant to do it. If these guys bite, then they are biting midges and they need to go, so it's worth the money. Non-biting midges are much more common. While they are annoying for sure, they pose no harm to people or pets. So, eliminating them is optional. I have them too all over my lawn. You can keep them somewhat under control by treating the way I show in this video, but this will only kill the adults that you spray. So, you will kill millions of them, but new eggs will hatch and they will quickly crop up again. I treat my yard every 60 days as shown in the video you watched. I don't do it for the midges, but rather for ants, American roaches, and that sort of thing. However, it also keeps the population of midges down for at least a couple of weeks. By the time I treat again in 60 days they are back in full force. To get rid of them you would need to treat regularly with an insect growth regulator, mixed with a pesticide, and imidacloprid granules. The IGR and granules are expensive and you need to do the treatment every 60 to 90 days. So, if they are not biting midges, then you may want to do what I do and just try to keep the population under control. However, if you decide that you do want them gone, then let me know and I will explain how to do it. You could also do the treatment in the video you watched every 2 to 4 weeks, but it's time consuming and again, it's going to cost money to do it that often. I am so sorry. I wish I have an easy solution for these guys, but they are very hard to kill.
      I hope that answers your question. Be well my friend.

      @@Kimismadenew You are very welcome. That's good news that they are non biting. Fun fact. Did you know that when the midges are flying around in large numbers, there is a good chance that they are in the process of mating? That is not always the case, but oftentimes it is. The males fly around like that to help attract the females. Okay. That's probably useless information that you didn't need to know, but I'm a pest controller, so what do you expect? Lol. Guy, Thanks -- I'm enjoying your videos! For mosquitos, unless i missed it, you didn't mention gutters. My question is -- assuming me or a neighbor has gutters with standing water that can't be repaired, how often to I need to treat them? Every rain, or does the pesticide 'stick around'?

    • @GuysPestSolutions
      @GuysPestSolutions  Před rokem +1

      That's a great question. Gutters can be very problematic. If the gutters are not pitched correctly, then you will get standing water. If it rains a lot, that will take care of it, but when you get rain, and then the water just sits there, you can get mosquitoes. The pesticide will stick to the sides of the gutters, but not in the water. When it rains again, the pesticide in the water will be washed away and the pesticide on the sides of the gutters will not be of assistance. You can use mosquito larvicide, but that will get washed away too when it rains. So, repairing the gutters is the preferred treatment. I think treating them with a pesticide every time it rains would be quite labor intensive. That being said, I happened to have a gutter that is located between my house and my pool screen structure, so the pitch cannot be reset. There is absolutely nothing I can do about it. However, I do not get mosquitoes up there because there are no mosquitoes in my yard anywhere. If there are no female mosquitoes to go up there and lay eggs, then there will be no new mosquitoes. Now, they can fly over from another property, but I also treat my neighbor's properties as well. I do not spray pesticide for them, but I do go over to their property periodically, with their permission, to check to see if there's any standing water. By eliminating all the standing water in everybody's yard around me, that sets up a mosquito free zone that is wide enough so that mosquitoes seldom make it to my property in the first place. Mosquitoes tend to fly low anyway, but I always treat my yard every 60 days, so they never make it to the gutter. While mosquitoes can travel quite far, most of the time they stay very close to the water that they came from. Only female mosquitoes bite because they need to take a blood meal before laying their eggs. They will typically lay in wait for you nearer to the ground because there is no food source on the roof. When you walk by, they will attack and get the blood they need, and then fly to standing water that they already know exists. So, if you do very good mosquito control down low, then there is a good chance that they will never make it to the gutters. If you are still having problems, and you have gutters that are no longer functioning properly, you can also drill small holes in the bottom of the gutters, where the water is standing. The water will drip out before the larvae can mature.
      I hope that helps. Be well my friend.

    Very great video! We are having problems with fleas and ticks in our yard so this will be my first time applying Bifen XTS to my lawn and exterior foundation. We have 10 acres so I plan on applying around the main front and back yard area. Since this is oil based, is there a certain time during the day that is better to apply than others? I am worried about the sun causing the grass to burn. Also, do you think this would stain siding? Thank you again for your wonderful video and thorough instructions!

    • @GuysPestSolutions
      @GuysPestSolutions  Před rokem

      I certainly do not think I would retreat 10 acres. At least, not unless you own a crop duster. Lol. I find that if you just put a 30-foot kill zone around the building, that usually does the job. You can also treat any specific areas where you walk the dogs or where the kids may be playing. The product is perfectly safe for people and pets after it dries. This product should not cause the grass to burn, regardless of when you apply it. Personally, I do it as soon as it gets light out, because I do not like working in the hot sun. This way I do not get heat exhaustion. I don't think the lawn could care less. This product is not going to stain your siding, but if you get it on the window glass, you are going to be able to see it. It kind of makes the windows look a little hazy. It easily washes off with soap and water. You will not be able to see it on the siding. The bugs won't like it though. Fleas can be somewhat difficult to treat sometimes. Make sure that you use enough of the product to get down to the ground. Also, you may need to treat every 30 days for two or three months to gain control over them. After you have control, then you can just treat every 60 days. Just kind of play it by ear for the first couple of months. If you are still seeing activity after the first 30 days, then treat again. Otherwise, you can just do every 60 days.
      I hope that helps. Be well my friend.

    • @GuysPestSolutions
      @GuysPestSolutions  Před rokem +1

      I live in Central Florida too. The best way to keep bugs out of your home is to treat the yard and the cracks and crevices around your home. I do it every 60 days and I have zero bugs. Please watch my video on how to treat your yard with a hose end sprayer. Also watch my video on how to prevent drywood termites. If you do both of these treatments, then your house will be bug free, and you will also prevent drywood termites. Now let me give you a little tip. You are not supposed to do this because it is not consistent with label directions, but I use the hose end sprayer to treat both the yard and the house. It makes the job go super fast. You can use Bifen XTS to do both the house and the yard. You are supposed to treat the house with the tank sprayer, but I can tell you that doing it with a hose end sprayer will not cause any harm to the environment, and it is perfectly safe for you to do. As always, make sure you wear the proper protective equipment. After you do these treatments, the only bugs that will be able to get in your house are the ones you carry in or the ones that fly in through an open door or window.
      Please let me know what the target pest is near your doors. How you treat it will depend on the species.
      I hope that helps. Be well my friend.

    • @GuysPestSolutions
      @GuysPestSolutions  Před rokem +3

      If you have a large property, treating it with a 2 gallon pump sprayer is going to take a very long time. When I say a very long time, I mean it will be your life's work. Lol. A better option might be choose a granular pesticide with a broadcast spreader. The only thing is though that you are supposed to water this stuff in anyway, so you may as well use the hose end sprayer. That being said, if you want a good 2 gallon sprayer, there are lots of them on Amazon. I would not recommend a pump up sprayer though. Those things really do not put out much volume. If you're going with a tank sprayer, then I would get one that is battery operated. Just read the reviews on Amazon because they are fairly reliable. Now, you should know that you don't always need to treat your entire yard. It all depends what your target pest is. For most pests, you can just treat a 30 to 50 foot area around the entire house. If you buy a couple of 100 foot X-Hoses, this is not going to be that hard to do. Treating with a hose end sprayer is lightning fast next to a tank sprayer. I hope that helps. Be well my friend.

    • @GuysPestSolutions
      @GuysPestSolutions  Před rokem +3

      They have the same ingredient, but the Talstar P is too thick to get picked up properly by the syphon tube of the sprayer, so you will end up spraying water. Besides, the Bifen XTS is cheaper anyway. Don't be fooled by the price. Keep in mind that the Bifen XTS gets mixed at 1/3 oz per gallon of water, while the Talstar P gets mixed at 1 full oz per gallon of water, so the Bifen XTS goes three times as far. If you divide the price of the Bifen XTS by 3, then you get the correct comparison in cost. The Bifen XTS is actually cheaper per finished gallon than the Talstar P.
      I hope that helps. Be well my friend.

    1- I watched another video of yours that you were illustrating how to spray with a pump, and I followed the same instructions, and it worked perfectly for about a month and a half. I sprayed my garage, windows, door entrance, and around the foundation. How often do I need to repeat this? And if I do the lawn treatment, do I still need to spray the aforementioned?
    2- How often do I treat the lawn? If I live in the Dallas region nearby a lake?
    I’m using the Bifen XTS
    Once again, thank you for sharing your knowledge and experience.

    • @GuysPestSolutions
      @GuysPestSolutions  Před rokem +1

      Let me start with the yard first. How often you treat will depend on how often the problem reoccurs. I find that ants are very good measuring device for me. When I start to see the ant activity start to pick up, then I know it is time to retreat. I generally find that I start seeing the ants again after about 60 days, so I treat my yard every 60 days. Also, you and I both live where there are drywood termites. It's a good idea to treat your house every 60 days if you are in drywood termite territory. Now, you are supposed to treat your house with a tank sprayer, but the truth is that I actually do my house with the same hose end sprayer that I use on the lawn. Doing that is not consistent with label directions, but it doesn't do any harm to the environment, and it certainly hasn't done any harm to me, because I have been doing it a long time, and I'm still here talking about it. The truth is that these pesticides are really very safe to use and they stay where you put them, after they dry. So, if you apply them on a dry day and you wear the proper protective equipment, then I don't see any problem at all with using any sort of sprayer. Since I have the sprayer in my hand while I am treating my yard, I just go ahead and treat the exterior of the house at the same time. So, including the house adds almost no time whatsoever to the yard treatment, and now I know that my house is totally protected. That being said, the manufacturer of the Bifen XTS claims that it will last 90 days, but I think that's a bit of a stretch. Even if it does last 90 days, the last 30 days will not be as effective as the first 30 days. Please watch my video on how to prevent drywood termites. Again, I do the treatment every 60 days using a hose end sprayer and Bifen XTS, instead of the products in the video and a tank sprayer.
      Obviously, you do not want to spray any of this stuff into the lake. You did not tell me exactly how close you are to the lake, or if the lake is on your property. If your property abuts the lake, then you need to be careful not to get any of the pesticide into the water. The closer you hold the sprayer to the ground, the less overspray there will be. So, if you are getting close to the lake, just keep the sprayer close to the ground and make sure you have no runoff going into the water. After it dries, it will be fine. Always get the weather forecast before you start treating anything outside, and give the pesticide at least two hours to dry before there is any chance of rain.
      Thank you so much for those kind words. Be well my friend.

      @@alashwayat Do you by chance have a slab home? If your home was built on a slab, then it is very possible that what you are experiencing is an ant colony that is actually under the slab. The ants that you are seeing are foraging for food. The thing is though that you are only seeing a very tiny number of the ants that are in the colony. The vast majority of them are foraging for food outside. Therefore, if you simply treat your yard with the hose end sprayer, that will kill off their food supply and it will create a kill zone around your entire house. If the ants venture into your yard, the pesticide will kill them. If they do not venture into the yard, then they will starve to death. Either way, they are doomed. Just so you know, the ants are going to get hungry, so you may see more of them foraging for food in the house. If that happens, then just spray all the ant trails with Temprid FX. Mix it 16 milliliters to a gallon of water and apply it with a pump up garden sprayer. Do not apply it on surfaces where food is prepared or eaten. Now there will be nowhere for them to escape to. Keep in mind that ants like to store food, so it may take a little while for the colony to starve to death, but if they cross any of your barriers, either inside or outside, the ones that do will be dead within a few hours. Most of the time, the colony will be dead within a couple of weeks. It varies though, based on the size of the colony and how well you do the treatment. Make sure you get the ground nice and wet, especially where it meets the house.

      Please watch my video on mosquitoes. I will give you the link. If that does not work, then the yard treatment will do the trick. You need to do it every 60 days. If you are treating your yard, you may as well treat your house as well with the hose end sprayer. You are not supposed to do it that way, but it will not harm your or the environment. This will prevent all sorts of bugs from getting in. Not mosquitoes, but lots of other pests, like ants, spiders, and so forth. I will give you the link to that video as well.

    Great information, thanks! I’ve watched several of your videos recently, just a few questions. I’ll be using the Talstar P for general outdoor perimeter treatment and also for the single application to the lawn for mosquitoes. How’s that chemical compare to the Bifen XTS you used here? Also, in the mosquito treatment video you used a different Chapin hose end sprayer (the one with a metal handle). Do you have a preference between the 2? Appreciate the insight!

      I am always looking for better, faster, and cheaper ways of doing things. I found that the sprayer in my original video was always falling apart on me and I couldn't spray very far up with it. So, I tested out some sprayers, and I really like the one that I show you in my hose end sprayer video because it has a stream setting that lets me reach very high places, and it never falls apart. The problem I had with that sprayer though is that you cannot dilute Talstar P sufficiently for it to work with this sprayer. Therefore, I had to find a pesticide that would work. So, I started testing different pesticides, and I found that Bifen XTS has the consistency of water, so it can easily be diluted to work well in this sprayer. As an added benefit, the Bifen XTS only needs to be mixed 1/3 ounce per gallon, instead of 1/2 or 1 ounce per gallon for the Talstar P. The Bifen XTS is a lot more expensive to purchase, but it goes three times as far, so it is actually less expensive per finished gallon. It works just as good, so it turns out to be not only a faster way to do it, but also a better and cheaper option as well. The new sprayer can reach places that are really high up. I am now using this sprayer and the Bifen XTS to treat my entire yard and my house as well. You are not supposed to use it to treat your house, but it makes the job go super fast. I can treat the entire exterior of the house in less than 30 minutes. I can treat the house and the yard in under two hours. I mix the Bifen XTS full strength for the lawn, so it works a lot better than mixing the Talstar P at half strength. This will not only kill mosquitoes, but every other living thing in your lawn. So, I really like this way of doing it much better. If you give it a try, I think you will agree with me. Be well my friend.

    How do you drill your driveway for termites to insert Taurus SC?

    • @GuysPestSolutions
      @GuysPestSolutions  Před rokem +2

      The short answer is that you don't drill holes in your concrete unless it is absolutely necessary. It is almost never necessary. Drilling concrete is not something that you can do yourself because it requires the use of a rod that injects the termiticide under the concrete at high pressure. Since you do not have access to this equipment, there is another way to do it. I have a video on how to trench correctly for subterranean termites. Just follow the directions in that video, and you should be okay. Most of the time, you can simply trench along both sides of the driveway, and that should be sufficient. The only time this may not work is if you have a retaining wall on the sides of the driveway. Please let me know if that is the case and I will guide you further. Otherwise, you should be fine just doing the treatment as I described in the video.
      I hope that helps. Be well my friend.

      Yes it can. Just put the sprayer on stream setting and soak the nest. The best time of day to do it is just before it gets completely dark. Wasps don't fly well in the dark, so they would have a hard time coming after you. You can also apply it on any surface where you don't want wasps in the first place. It does a great job at preventing them as well. Be well my friend.

    Question is it true termites will not eat wood treated with a sprayed on solution of borax which never looses its toxicity????????

    • @GuysPestSolutions
      @GuysPestSolutions  Před 11 měsíci

      That is not exactly true. The termites will die if they eat borax, so some of them will die when they attack wood that is treated with borax, but after they get deep into the wood, then they will probably be okay. The borax does not repel them in any way. You can treat unfinished wood with Bora-Care and that will permanently stop all species of termites. This is also a borate product but it is formulated to penetrate deep into the wood. I hope that helps. Be well my friend.

      This is actually faster than using granules because you usually need to water in granules, but you can use Bifen LP granules if you like. • @GuysPestSolutions
      @GuysPestSolutions  Před 10 měsíci +1

      I'm afraid not. There are two problems with that approach. The Nibor-D will get washed away from the rain and it only works on insects that clean themselves or that get it on their exoskeletal. It will not helps with things like spiders. So, you may get some short term results with some insects, but it's an expensive way to do it that is not as effective as using Bifen XTS. The Nibor-D wasn't really formulated for yard treatments. Some people use diatomaceous earth, but that has the same problems as Nibor-D. DE is a lot less expensive than Nibor-D though. Thank you, Guy, for this new video. Do you recommend having lumber sprayed for drywood termites with bora care for a new construction (i.e ADU)? Or do you have a better solution for long term, cost-effective way to prevent/control drywood and subterranean termite infestation in new construction? Thank you.

    • @GuysPestSolutions
      @GuysPestSolutions  Před rokem +1

      Great question. You can do it either way. Most people do it after the shell is up and before the siding, shingles, or insulation goes on. That way you have all the wood ready to go. You do want the flooring and the sheathing on everything. You just don't want to cover it up with siding, shingles, or insulation before you spray the wood. You can also treat all the wood before it is used, but you will waste Bora-Care because some wood will end up as waste. It is much faster to do when the house is up too. The important thing to remember is that, if it's wood, treat it.
      I hope that helps. Be well John.

      @@JohnSmith-jf3pj What I'm talking about is the subflooring that goes over the floor joists, and the sheathing that goes over the exterior of the wall studs and on top of the roof rafters. Back in the day, this used to all be plywood, which I think is still the best option, but these days you often see them use materials like oriented-strand board. This is not the finished surface. This is the sheeting that they put the siding over, the shingles over, and the finished flooring on.

      I'm not sure I did a good job explaining that, so please do let me know if I need to clarify further. What I'm basically saying is that you want the shell of the house built, but you don't want any of the finished materials installed yet, like the siding, shingles, finished flooring, and so forth.

      You definitely watched the right video. The spiders are not miraculously appearing inside your house. They are coming in from the outside, so if you treat the outside, then they will not be around to get into the house. So, start by treating your yard, and you should also treat around your windows, doors, the eaves, and any other cracks are crevices around the outside of your home. You are not supposed to do this with the hose end sprayer, but it does make it awful fast. You are actually supposed to treat the exterior of the house using a battery operated or pump-up tank sprayer. After you treat the yard and the house, getting rid of the spiders inside the house is pretty easy. I just spray them with a can of Raid Flying Insect Killer or any similar product. The spiders will die pretty quickly. After you spray the webs, just knock them down with a broom or dust mop. You should also spray behind the headboard of to bed, under the bed, behind and under dressers, and other areas where spiders could be a problem. The Raid Flying Insect Killer puts out a fog that the spiders cannot escape. If you treat your yard and the outside of the house every 60 to 90 days, then you will no longer have spiders coming into the house. You do not need to treat outside in freezing weather.
      I hope that helps. Be well my friend.

    • @GuysPestSolutions
      @GuysPestSolutions  Před 2 měsíci +1

      Bifen IT can do the same job as Bifen XTS, but the problem with Bifen IT is that it does not work in a hose end sprayer. It doesn't matter how much I dilute it, the syphon tube will not pick up the liquid in the holding tank. The viscosity of the Bifen XTS is as thin as water, so it gets picked up easily by the syphon tube. So, I would use up the Bifen IT in a tank sprayer on the house and buy Biden XTS for the yard. By the way, the Bifen XTS looks expensive, but it gets mixed at 1/3 ounces per gallon instead of 1 ounce per gallon, so it goes 3 times as far. So, Bifen XTS is actually cheaper per finished gallon than Bifen IT. I hope that helps. Be well my friend.

    Why Bifen and not Taurus SC?

    • @GuysPestSolutions
      @GuysPestSolutions  Před rokem +4

      Bifen is a repellent pesticide, so it is safe for bees and other flying insects. They know that it is a poison, so they avoid it. Taurus SC is a non-repellent pesticide, so the bees will land on it and bring it back to the hive. This will kill off the entire hive. We need bees to pollinate crops, so we don't want to kill them. That is why it is illegal to use Taurus SC to treat your yard. Bifen is better anyway, because it is a fast kill and that is what you want for most bugs on your lawn and in the yard. Taurus SC can take days to be effective because it is designed to be a very slow kill. You need to use the correct pesticide for the target pests you are after. You will find that Bifen XTS does a wonderful job.

      You are correct. Just like antibiotics that do not discriminate against good bacteria, pesticides do not discriminate against helpful bugs. The thing is though that the bad bugs are such a nuisance and can be so unhealthy, that it can make sense to sacrifice the good bugs to get rid of the bad ones. No different than antibiotics. The product in the video does not harm bees and other flying insects because they can identify it as a poison and they will not land on surfaces that were treated with it. It only kills the bugs that are on the lawn or other things that you treat, at the time you do the treatment. So, no more mosquitoes, roaches, ants, earwigs, and so forth.
