    I found that just controlling the soil’s PH levels completely rid my lawn of clover, weeds and crab grass. In Northern VA my soil was too acid for the grass and just right for clover weeds and crabgrass. The back lawn had some pine trees which increased the acid content higher than the front lawn. I bought a few soil test kits from a houses and garden center for a dollar and developed an understand of the different PH levels in different areas. All were to acidic so the only solution was pot ash. Which was simple, safe and very easy. No chemicals with possible hazardous runoff.
    The grass that I was seeding with liked a more neutral PH level that was different than the weeds,clover and crabgrass, so it flourished and all the bad stuff died. Reseeding fills in the voids left. I cut the grass never below 3.5 inches to reduce water usage.
    All my neighbors would stop buy and ask me what my secrets were to my perfect lawn. I just said, follow the science.

    Great video! As far as clover goes, up until the 1950s it was was the most popular lawn type. It was actually chemical company marketing post WW2 that suggested it was a weed. Everyone wanted a clover lawn. And like stated in the video, it is great for pollinators. Beyond that, it actually a nitrogen fixer, meaning it works through a symbiotic relationship with bacteria to covert nitrogen in our atmosphere in sequestered nitrogen that is bioavailable to plants. So if you have poor soil, it might be a good idea to start with clover to get things going for a year or two, then start mixing in the grass seed. Having bear ground leads to the soil bacteria either going dormant or completely dying off, and to takes a while to rebuild that healthy soil ecosystem which supports plants. This is because the ground will be directly exposed to the sun to “cook”. Just thought I’d share!

Instead plant things that foster biodiversity. Nature already has the cure for every disease and pest. We just have to get away from the idea of sterilizing everything and killing off what we think is “undesirable”.

    Buddy, thanks for the recommendations! I had tilled, cultivated and planted a new lawn this spring. I was hesitant to use any herbicide figuring it would interfere with lawn seed germination and growth. More than half of my lawn was soon covered with just about every weed variety imaginable...
    However after just one application of the recommended solution, in less than 3 weeks ALL weeds are dead or dying! And my grass wasn’t affected at all! I used the same Jonathan Green variety you suggested in another vid (I also live in NJ).
    Just wish I knew about this herbicide before planting this year as I would have definitely used it as a pre-emergent.
    I’ll definitely broadcast spray again this fall. After a good scarifying, dethatch, aeration, fertilization and overseed, I hope to have a great lawn in year 2!
    Peace brother 👊🏻

    • @michaelbacchiocchi8111
      @michaelbacchiocchi8111 Před 3 lety +1

      @@jcrane521 scarification is kind of like scraping the surface. It removes dead/dying vegetation build-up which can block needed air, water and nutrients from entering the soil. Ideally (albeit impossible) all you should see are grass shoots and soil. It also tends to scrape light grooves into the soil, which IMO provides a better seedbed for over-seeding although I haven’t found any studies to confirm this.
      It’s also a good opportunity to rake in some new soil afterwards for better combining.
      Good luck to you. Make year 11 the best ever! 👍

    I pulled out by hand most of the crab grass. As for the clover I didn’t use anything other than when I mow I use the mulcher on my mower. I set the mower to the highest setting so it doesn’t cut the grass too short. It’s now mostly gone and I expect it will be crowded out within the next six to eight months. Whenever I see the crabgrass I pull it out before it seeds again. My only other problem is dandelions. I pick the flowers off before they seed. I pulled the dandelions out whenever I can. Now my lawn is lush.

    • @Xanthopteryx
      @Xanthopteryx Před 26 dny

      Never. This is very(!) toxic for nature.
      And you should preferably cut the lawn one time. In the late summer/beginning of early autumn. When all the flowers of the grass and the flowers have gone away. Then cut with a scythe or similar. Let it stay on the ground for at least a week so the seeds can fall off. Then rake together and put on a compost.
      The more time goes by, the more your boring horrendous monoculture green desert lawn will transform into a more meadow like with more flowers, more bees and butterflies and insects, and nutrients will slowly go away with the cut grass that will make the grass grow slower and the flowers to become more.
      So NEVER have fertilizers on.

    Tenacity also works on nutsedge and nimblwill, but the best way to address the crabgrass issue is to prevent it before it cones up. It starts to germinate when the surface soil temperature is between 55 & 60 degrees for at least 5-6 days, so you want to apply the pre-emergent before that happens. Here in Iowa that soil temperature happens between April and early May but there's nothing consistent about the weather here so I use back to back applications of fertilizer with prodiamine or pendamethalin. I apply the first one in mid March and the second one 4 to 6 weeks later. Pro tip: if you've applied grass seed during this time, you'll only lose about 10% of your germination rate.

    If re-seeding is necessary, will grass seed germinate in areas treated w/ Tenacity? Great info.

    I have an all clover, thyme, and violets lawn and it’s fabulous! Highly recommend!
