How the KGB took over modern Russia. Total Recall #1

  • Most everyone knows that the president of Russia, Vladimir Putin is an ex-KGB agent. However, many believe that the KGB has been left in the past and was destroyed along with the USSR. Unfortunately, nothing could be further from the truth. In TV Rain's new program, Total Recall, journalist Anna Nemzer looks at how the KGB survived the 1990s and came back with full force in the 2000s.

As an expat who lived in Siberia for many years, and now lives in Georgia, I must say that I wish TV rain were significantly more watched and popular. I'm not talking about Russians themselves, I'm talking about westerners. But I also, wish that Russians had more access to this channel. My girlfriend who is Russian, and is not of the intelligencia, she's working class, once asked me what she should listen to and watch outside of Russia, I gave her the link to TV rain. She is now an avid watcher. She's not from one of the first five top cities of Russia, but the channel resonates with her, so this is not just the westerners, obviously, it is also reaching deep into the working class of Russia. Unfortunately it will take time, spreading in this way, organic that is, takes time. But it is happening... Keep up the good work

The way this analysis is presented, it looks like it is intended not for English-speaking Westerners but for Russians speaking English. English is mediocre; English pronunciation has issues; there is a lot of Runglish (poorly translated Russian idioms); there is a lot of underlying Russian folklore known only to the Russian audience. Until all the issues are ironed out, it is all in vain.

Most people like me who lived behind the iron curtain in Eastern Europe know that. But the Russian propaganda is still very powerful and causes a lot of problems in the democratic processes. I simply believe that dictatorships are not forever and dictators are mortal humans as well. TV rain, Meduza, Moscow times and the other Russian independent information channels have got a huge job in front of them. Kremlin’s got a tight grip on the information space in Russia and it’ll be almost impossible to fight it. But I don’t have any doubt that sooner or later the truth will come out.

That was a good broadcast. I liked that term institutional inertia. It seems that to be a successful dictator, you have to have an excellent secret police. The FSB, KGB, NKVD, etc, they all served the same purpose of protecting the authoritarian ruler of that time period. It looks like when Russians try something new and it doesn't go well, they fall back on what they are familiar with. The communist leaders of the USSR turned out to be just as authoritarian as the tsars before them. And Putin is just a continuation of this forceful, strongman leadership. This seems to be a recurring theme throughout Russia's history.
