How the KGB took over modern Russia. Total Recall #1

- Most everyone knows that the president of Russia, Vladimir Putin is an ex-KGB agent. However, many believe that the KGB has been left in the past and was destroyed along with the USSR. Unfortunately, nothing could be further from the truth. In TV Rain's new program, Total Recall, journalist Anna Nemzer looks at how the KGB survived the 1990s and came back with full force in the 2000s.

I am so grateful for this channel. Thank you all. We stand with y'all. Today and always. ❤
OMG, Anna, I am so happy to see you here, on the TV Rain English Channel! I always watch your shows in Russian as well! Please keep up a good work! 🙂
As an expat who lived in Siberia for many years, and now lives in Georgia, I must say that I wish TV rain were significantly more watched and popular. I'm not talking about Russians themselves, I'm talking about westerners. But I also, wish that Russians had more access to this channel. My girlfriend who is Russian, and is not of the intelligencia, she's working class, once asked me what she should listen to and watch outside of Russia, I gave her the link to TV rain. She is now an avid watcher. She's not from one of the first five top cities of Russia, but the channel resonates with her, so this is not just the westerners, obviously, it is also reaching deep into the working class of Russia. Unfortunately it will take time, spreading in this way, organic that is, takes time. But it is happening... Keep up the good work
Thank you so much!!
@@tvrainnewsroom 13:25 continued operation in a near "singapol" ??? state...
What is "singapol"? Or whatever word is meant?
The way this analysis is presented, it looks like it is intended not for English-speaking Westerners but for Russians speaking English. English is mediocre; English pronunciation has issues; there is a lot of Runglish (poorly translated Russian idioms); there is a lot of underlying Russian folklore known only to the Russian audience. Until all the issues are ironed out, it is all in vain.
@@oneanywhere8561Nonsense.
@@oneanywhere8561 no, it isn't in vain. Non-Russian speaking interested people who are keen for information as well as clues to the thinking that aren't only in Russian language, benefit immensely from these programs.
RT or Al-Jazeera may broadcast in flawless English or other pertinent languages but their productions are mendacious, fertile with their abilities to seed further lies worldwide.
I admire those Russians who resist Putin and repression, but despair at the apathy and passivity of most Russians.
Maybe it’s to do with the west praising navalny and Russians know him better by experience. Have you heard navalnys on race hate marches ? If you did then you would understand they reminded of what they face in ww2
Yeah sure. Then all Russians happily call all southerners 'churki', yes? A derogatory terms that means firewood. And it's only Navalni that reminds him of Hitler, not Putin's state?@@pauldean8638
Excellent work by Anna Nemzer. She analyzes and highlights how the FSB uses both old KGB methods and adopts new approaches, including the use of modern technology, to achieve its goals. This is an excellent work not only by a journalist, but also by a person who is not indifferent to what is happening in Russia today. Thank you
But what, exactly are their goals ? What do you want when you have everything - just more ?
@@ericwillis777 For them, it is never enough...

Hello from Canada! Fantastic work, Anna. There is a lot of details in your presentation and I might have to watch it a couple of times but it is very interesting. By the way, you look stunningly beautiful.
Very interesting as well as sad! Thank you! 🤔😔
Most people like me who lived behind the iron curtain in Eastern Europe know that. But the Russian propaganda is still very powerful and causes a lot of problems in the democratic processes. I simply believe that dictatorships are not forever and dictators are mortal humans as well. TV rain, Meduza, Moscow times and the other Russian independent information channels have got a huge job in front of them. Kremlin’s got a tight grip on the information space in Russia and it’ll be almost impossible to fight it. But I don’t have any doubt that sooner or later the truth will come out.
Excellent, educational and freighting.
Incredible presentation, and highly informative. The impression I have gotten from what I have read is that the tentacles of the FSB are much too widespread and deep to be rooted out. At some point institutions such as this become self sustaining.
I am so dissappointed to have to agree with you.
Sending support from Portugal 🇵🇹❤🌎
interesting, thanks
Wow, quite scaring. Thank you for releasing this video, a lot of people must know
Believe me a lot of people in Eastern Europe know it. But Russia has always been a master of the propaganda and deception. I only hope that Russian independent media succeeds to get the message out to the Russian population even with the Kremlin’s tight grip on the information space. It seems almost impossible but there is always hope.
Thank you so much for bravely speaking out. You and other dissident Russians give us in the West hope for a better future for Russia and ourselves without threats and aggression from the current administration.
I wish russian people will not lose the second chance to have free and democratic country now KGB have a state after the collapse of current regime then they will have a chance i also think not only soviet dictators but also russian dictator they never understand the value of russian peoples lives and their ecomic and political freedom
you must be feeling the pain of an economy without Russian resources. lets be honest about it.

Extremely well presented, Thank you, all people of the west should see this!!
"In Russia the government's power is absolute, but at the same time the government is extremely fearful of criticism, even of frank utterance. All men born in Russia . . . conspire tacitly to observe unanimous silence concerning what goes on. Nothing is ever said, yet everything is known. . . . In Russia, to converse is to conspire; to think is to revolt. Thought is not merely a crime, it is a misfortune." Custine. 1840s

And yet, 🖤putin has captured the US Congress Republicans. They do his bidding. The few stand-up Republicans fell last week. Mitch McConnell, Senate Minority Leader, was convinced to kneel at 🖤putin's feet by having his sister-in-law drowned in her Tesla in the pond on Mitch McConnell's Texas ranch 2 weeks ago. The oldest tree in the Republican forest was felled. All aid from the USA to Ukraine, Taiwan and other allies is unreachable now. I am in despair. Please, God, we need Your Divine Intervention 💔🥺

Very high admiration for you--'Anna Nemzer',, for your humanity compassion,, your love for others and your tireless hours and days and years to expose the justice the Russian people need against Vladimir Putin,, You tell it straight with the facts and none of your own biases even though it would be tempting for you to easily take just one view of things and your speaking of English is impeccable,, I admire you---'God Bless You'--Amen.
Very glad to see and hear Anna!
Your programme is just what the Russian people need. Calling and keeping Putin to account is the way forward.

Trump hasn't denied knowing organized crime figures. During a 2013 appearance on David Letterman's late night show, he admitted to having met mobsters "on occasion."

The dissemblance of Eltsin's reforms paved the way for KGB to come back with a vengeance.
That was a good broadcast. I liked that term institutional inertia. It seems that to be a successful dictator, you have to have an excellent secret police. The FSB, KGB, NKVD, etc, they all served the same purpose of protecting the authoritarian ruler of that time period. It looks like when Russians try something new and it doesn't go well, they fall back on what they are familiar with. The communist leaders of the USSR turned out to be just as authoritarian as the tsars before them. And Putin is just a continuation of this forceful, strongman leadership. This seems to be a recurring theme throughout Russia's history.
History will remember the murders of Navalny and Nemtsov as crimes against humanity, with those responsible being viewed the same as monstrous despotic conquerors such as Herod, Nero, and the like.
Russia has always been like this. A "peaceful, civilized, democratic Russia" has never existed, it has ALWAYS been invading its neighbours etc. This is why people say "It's Russia not necessarily Putin" because Putin has only been in power for 20 years and Russia was still like this long before him.
only idiots would throw their lives away to change what the Russian identity is, a free and independent world actor. trying the same thing over again and expect different results is insanity.
@@mariuschirita187yes, free from moral constraints and independent of any restraint by their population.
It is not just Putin, but Putin is the one who worked hard to make them like that. There is a clever indoctrination and brainwashing going on. A small minority with brains is fine and hate Putin with a passion, the rest are either ignorant or worse.
You should do more videos
You ask for feedback: TV Rain does good work standing up against Russian Propaganda. I have followed you for months. A segment "total recall" must provide facts without whining, but tough. Short and precisely. Good luck in the youtube Universe! Time will show if there's a real possibility for a modern Russia.

Navalny was a smart guy, a leader, to be respected. But he had a fatal flaw; he was not a coalition builder. The Russian opposition groups need to put thier differences aside, form a united front, do everything to remove the midget from power, then once he's gone, you sort the rest out later.
struggling with the reality of an economy without access to Russian energy? its palpable in your comment...
But the theme of this review is that it is not dependent on one person, that the infiltration of civil society, and replacement and elimination of it's institutions, and consequent total lack of any oversight or alternative, just means that whoever is at the top of the pile the organization will continue. Only a revolution can change things to the extent needed, in which case the outcome is uncertain.
