Is the 2020 Ford Ranger Lariat with Black Appearance PKG the BEST small truck?

  • The Ford Ranger is trying to fill a hole in the midsize truck segment. Under the hood is a 2.3L turbocharged inline-4 producing 270HP & mated to a 10-speed automatic transmission. The exterior of this Ranger has the Black Accent Pkg and 4x4 capability. On the inside you will be greeted to a dull leather interior, and all the safety tech you could want. Is the 2020 Ford Ranger Black Appearance Pkg worth the price?

I love my new 2020 Ford Ranger Super Cab Lariat FX4. We truly missed having a pickup. Mine is Lightning Blue. I believe I get more practicality from the Super Cab vs the Crew Cab as I get a 6' bed vs a 5' bed. How often do you travel more than an hour with more than 2 people in your vehicle? Even my mother in law doesn't mind riding around in the back. I also have better 'storage' room behind the front seats as the dual 'suicide doors' open much wider and creates a stronger cabin. The only other pickup I bought new was a 1989 Ford Ranger, and the other two F150s I had (1999 & 2010) would not fit into the garage like this ‘midsize’ pickup does. My combined MPG since new is around 23 and I’m impressed with this little engine with so much torque.
I've already added a hard top (Extang Solid Fold 2.0 ~$950), installed a tailgate damper (Dee Zee Tail Gate assist ~$40), and replaced the stock front marker lights with LED (czcams.com/video/AUsLL23gHBI/video.html) to blend in with the color scheme. I purposely got the FX4 package to ensure that it be 'flat towable'. I had Blue Ox tow plates installed (along with acquiring the Blue Ox Ascent Tow Bar and the Blue Ox Patriot 3 Brake system) in order to tow it behind our motor home. It’s only 400# more than the 2017 Ford Focus Titanium hatchback on the dolly. (I miss the Focus' mpg but not the lack of utility.)
Funny Fact: This Ranger has more miles 'Flat Towed' behind our motor home than on its odometer (~3400 miles).
We plan on enjoying many adventurous journeys in our new pickup.
Now to think up a good personal License Plate….hmm.

RR Ford Performance also has accessories to make the Ranger better. There’s an FPP performance pack which is an ECU and transmission recalibration w/a K&N filter rated at 45 hp/60 ft-lbs $825. There’s the FPP (Borla) catback performance exhaust $1200. Lastly the Fox (tuned by) FPP coil over/level kit $1300. So if one can live w/o the Lariat bells & whistles one can opt for an XL/XLT with the above performance options & drive off the lot with a pretty kickass Ranger. I’m not a salesman, just a car guy and I’m sure Ford approves of this message 🤣🤣🤣

I plan to get front tints and smoke out the tailgates.
    Get the ford performance tune
Cold air intake and Catback aero exhaust
    2.5in leveling kit
Add some almost 33in wheels to the stock rims and add 1.5in or 2in wheel spacers for a wider stance.
Those are the nessecary changes I have to have, more to come after that provably.

The Ranger looks great with the black appearance package. Ford nailed the look and now with the tune package that adds 45HP, they have performance nailed. The size is also good. They really dropped the ball on features though. Just because it's a smaller truck, many of us still want premium features, memory seat, more adjustability to the seats, ventilated seats, moonroof, nicer leather etc. Another words, a Platinum edition.

They are always mentioned by the reviewer as a "zonk" but yet.... no change. If you go to ford's website, they ARE an option for $50. Why doesn't anyone get them? Is there some weird thing where they all shipped before that was an option or something?

I think the door is wide open in this segment. Nissan has a great chance to impress if their redesign is good. The Ram Dakota is coming too!!

My favorite truck coz it's affordable (sort of) with my favorite package. I wonder if there'll be a ranger raptor. Thanks Joe. Peace.

Not this generation. But maybe the next one. The new Bronco, based off the Ranger, is rumored to have on though. 👍🏻

@@rustlesee Bronco and Ranger are completely different trucks, except the wheels... they're round on both of them. I worked on the Ranger launch, now I'm working on the bronco launch.

I used to love the Ranger from previous generations when it really was a compact truck, you really got the best of both worlds (minus the fuel efficiency maybe). I find this recent iteration very bland across all trim levels and this one in particular is very overpriced for what you get, in my opinion. Also, you're killing me with those junk food references, keep up the good work, brother.

Full size yes but maybe a xl trim for 45 g. You can get a xlt ranger for around 32 to 34. This truck had most of the goodies you can get. A loaded tacoma is 46 grand and is old and ugly and half the tech. I owned one sorry ass tundra and i'll never own another toyota product. There quality is like big foot a myth .

If they made a Ford Ranger King Ranch, Platinum, or Luxury Limited I'd definitely be the first to buy one of them. Anything to compete with the GMC Canyon Denali. And a Colorado high country would be dope too. I have a 2004 Nissan Pathfinder Platinum edition and if anything midsized I'd definitely would want ford to add their 3 luxury trims too the Ford ranger and then put like a 3.0L Ecoboost V6 in it. Or make a 3.0 Ecoboost V6 in that matter explorer, expedition, and f150s can keep the 3.5L.
