"Heartbreak Hill" - Pyramid Peak - Desolation Wilderness

This video is a bit more revealing and personal than my others. I gave the advisory because I felt it necessary to leave in the cursing and alcohol references and consumption as effect. I hope it serves at least as a reasoning as to why it took me so long to edit my other videos. But I am proud to say I finally conquered Pyramid Peak.
From Lake Aloha, up the Eastern slope of Pyramid, there is no trail. It is very steep in places and very loose in others. Be careful, many of the boulders roll and tilt as you step on them and the shale breaks loose quickly. I believe there is a "trail" on the other side but I have not seen it. Take care.

Seriously ... Congratulations for your channel and your hiking. I'll watch all your videos with pleasure! Greetings.

PS: In my opinion, Nature regenerates body and soul.
Life really sucks sometimes and it takes a strong person to tell complete strangers the struggles that you are going through at that particular time in your life. This video just reminds us all that we are human!! Thanks for another great video and taking us on another one of your adventures!
You have so much heart, Brooklynn and it shows in every video you make. This one is no different. This was raw and emotional and inspiring. At the end of the day, as long as you're happy with yourself and what you've accomplished, that's all you can ask of yourself. That's all we can ever ask from anyone.
Wilderness is where I go to heal as well. It doesn't judge. When it rains on a hike; rich and poor, humble and arrogant, happy and sad... We all get wet. John Muir had it right, "When we go out we are really going in..."
Thank you for all your posts. You have opened yourself to us and I am humbled by your gift. When you keep your eyes down on the trail all you see is your feet... Keep looking up at the beauty around you Landmark. All the best.
Michael Wellington beautifully spoken, sir.
Michael Wellington Well put!
Hey LandmarkAdventures,
You produce wonderful videos. I am always quite impressed by the quality of the editing as well as the content. The content on this video was honest to goodness real life. While my heart hurt for you the first time I watched and still does on this second view, you shared reality, truth, and pain. I appreciate your honesty and vulnerability. Then you put it into a perspective that makes it special to backpackers and in this case climbers too.
This video came out about 8 months ago. It still brought tears to my eyes and much laughter too. You have a great wit and it comes across. Well, I just want to encourage your video making and thank you for all the time and effort. I don't video any of my trips because I just don't want to take the time and work. It is work. At 61 it is enough work for me to go to the depths of the wilderness (solo). I also hope that you are or will some day enjoy a relationship and person who will bring you continual great joy and love.
Thanks again,
Rodney
+Rodney Mruk This may be an older message, but it is not below my radar. Thank you for your support. It is those like you that keep me positive. Thank you. I'm glad to have reached out and touched another.
Your humanity and humor is so refreshing. I hope you're still doing well.
Not depressing at all, since somehow your humor always shines through. You poured out your heart and your Jack. Well done. Thanks for sharing with us.
Great vid! Saw it once looking at hiking vids, went looking for it again and couldn't remember where ,soooo I watched all your videos TWICE looking for it again, duh, "Heartbreak Hill", so obvious. You deliver alot of who you are in your videos. You are a fabulous person.
Also wanted to tell u how much I appreciate your filming an edit ing. Especially when I watch other people. You got it down!!!
SO GOOD TO SEE YOU BACK!! Sorry to hear the sad news. I know it's old news, but non the less.
Your vids bring me so much happiness. Watching your humor and such wilderness beauty.(your beauty is nice too) ; ). Some day I will make it out there, but for now I love being out there with you. THANKS SO MUCH.
Thank you! I'm glad I finally finished the series. Obviously there was some "life" stuff messing up my schedule. Get on out there, girl! Adventure is ANYWHERE.
The irony of this post right now...in my own life I have also recently been dumped only a few months ago. While finances have kept me from going on a big adventure- (have really wanted to hike the AT thru the Smokies!!!) my own experience has driven me to also get out and do more. Activity and exercise are the best anti-depressants! I know how you feel Brooklyn. You support us with these videos that inspire, we can support you with comments when you have issues in your life too. Thank you and I hope things are better now. If I lived in Sacramento I'd love to hangout with you, so just remember there are plenty of people out there that would love to be with you.
Thank you. Yes, getting out there and taking care of yourself and accomplishing goals is a true "drug". All the comments have been motivational and truly touching. Isn't it amazing and inspiring to see so many others just like us? Passionate and emotional and not afraid to be moved by the moment. I think it takes guts to come on here in comments and share your vulnerable side. We're all vulnerable. We're all human. I think CZcams's power is "used for good" when it's used like this. To bring people together. REAL people. Cheers my friend. And yes, if we ever cross paths, I'll buy you a beer if you buy me one... LOL
You are very brave to expose your soul like this. Heartbreak is one of those things we all experience but I think you dealt with it in a great way. I really enjoy watching your videos and they always make me smile. Keep up the good work.
So sorry about your loss,... Your in our prayers.💕
This video reveals your humanity and gives your viewers a way to personally connect with you. All of your vids have given me great insight for my upcoming PCT thru-hike both for hiking and for documenting it. I appreciate your candor and really hope to have the pleasure of running into you on the trail one day. Praying your heart will heal quickly and we will continue to enjoy new adventures from Landmark!
Jason Caster Thank you. When are you starting the PCT?? And yes, document it!
I plan start around April 20th so I can attend the kickoff. LandmarkAdventures
I'm inspired by you. Your humility and humor, your independence and ingenuity. I'm sorry you were (hopefully have moved on) heartbroken... life has a funny way of opening new doors when others close. ♡
Embrace your love of mother nature, embrace the love you have for yourself :) You are definetly blessed to have mountains around to cool you down and humble your soul. Thanks for sharing your philosophy!
Glad you made it up. The last seven hundred feet or so to the top, from whichever side you come up on, is brutal. Here's hoping all your future trips are as rewarding. Best of luck from that guy at the Pine Cove.
That guy at the Pine Cove..... :D Hello friend! Cheers! See you there.
I think you are an amazing person. I love your sense of adventure and your energy. You are freakin funny as hell. Your videos are great, keep them coming. the editing is all around perfect, the music, trail maps,....fantastic They are inspirational and especially this one because I stumbled upon your videos researching a solo backpack trek through Yosemite for the same reason......heartbreak. I need to go off on my own and re-learn how to be myself again. Thank you for this video, it means a lot. I love the Jack bottle and your reaction from the sip, haha!!! Whomever let you go made the biggest mistake of their lives because you are just awesome!!!!!! I hope to run into you out on the trail someday!!! Best wishes.....
Goodness, thank you! And cheers to your hurt heart! The wild heals us and reminds us of who we are and WHY we are. We are here to experience the ultimate adventures of life which is love. Not just love with each other but love of ourselves and our world. Live life passionately. Go find YOU and have a blast!
Since I don't have a Pyramid Peak in my back yard, I flip on one of your videos for solace. :) Thank you!! Stay strong!!
Hey, I have been watching you vids on JMT and found this on. I think you chose a perfect place to deal with things. I had a similar experience at the same time and I think you are perfect. Your are fun, caring and from what I can see a beautiful catch never give up.
Same thing happened to me and I tackled it the same way you did. I know that all of your subscribers are thinking of you and offer their kind words, but sometimes you just gotta go climb a mountain or crash a mountain bike in my case, to feel better. I've never been very good with words, but if I did have some advice it would be this: when life gives you lemonade, turn it into lemons. Life will be like, WTF? While that has absolutely no bearing on anything here, that saying always gives me a good chuckle, and I know we all need one of those now and then. Take care Brooklyn, we're all in this together. I'm rootin for ya.
Jack and the Wilderness are great company, your fans love ya... you make us laugh as I'm sure they make you laugh... ;-) Love the vids Brooklyn...they make my day!!
My buddy and I just climbed Pyramid Peak yesterday. Truly an awesome place! I'm glad you conquered it!
Thanks for sharing. Have been praying for you and will continue to pray. Your amazing!
Oh thank you. God bless. I am well and positive. This was in July. I didn't want to post it before the JMT. Plus I wasn't sure if I was going to. But I'm glad I can share the Pyramid climb and maybe give hope or inspiration to others going through similar rough times. It's important to go where you feel safe. Wherever that is. And take care of yourself for a while.
LandmarkAdventures Glad to see you so positive and in good spirits again. Now take some of your advice to us and go and make NEW ADVENTURES and share it with us. Your in my prayers. Your amazing!
Man, what a fool to leave you. Very inspiring to see you grieve and overcome your fears. So glad your quest didn't lead to injury. Compelling for sure. Hope you moved on. Your videos rock!
I go to the Humboldt Redwoods State Park/Lost Coast when I need to bug out and get right. Feels like coming home. Wish I couId go more often. Its the place I daydream about when the walls close in and I dont want to be where I am, physically or emotionally. Thanks for sharing your hikes. Its neat to virtually walk with you through your adventures.
I so much want to hike that trail southbound and flyfish along the way. So beautiful.
Way to go Brook! One of your best. You suffer for your art!
Dang I’m seriously impressed
After ascending Ralston from Glen Alpine I attempted Pyramid, but those boulders wore me down to quickly to manage the peak, a job well done to you!
Congrats on Pyramid! Wilderness will always be there for you. I reluctantly got divorced after being married for 13 years. When I was ready I climbed Pyramid in 3 feet of snow and threw my wedding ring off the summit. It was time to move on and now I am with someone that loves me. On the way up I met a guy that was celebrating his recent cancer free diagnosis by climbing Pyramid. We were both celebrating life that day with someone we loved and trusted - Wilderness! You will be OK!
There is a really good use trail up Pyramid. A mile before Horsetail Falls on highway 50 there is a giant caltrans message board. You can legally park under it in the turnout. Cross the hwy and stay to the right of the creek (Rocky Creek and canyon). Not on maps or maintained but a pretty good trail. I've gone your way and it is a bitch.
Pyramid Peak seems to be a sacred, healing, and freeing climb for the downtrodden and heavy-hearted. Cheers to you, my friend. And to the man you met who beat the odds. Your comment moved me. Thanks for the info tip on the trail. Though I am glad I went the way I did. I think I needed it to be as hard as possible. It really has been a stitch in my side since my early 20s when it "beat me". Well, my fear beat me. The JMT helped me overcome my fear of storms. Pyramid helped me overcome my fear of failure. CHEERS!!!
Congrats! I'm glad Crystal Basin was spared after the recent King fire. Love your vids!!
Glad you shared. Break ups are hard. I hope that you get a lot of support and have a smooth transition. I believe that when you are ready, love will be knocking on your door again. You seem like you would be a wonderful mate. I hope that you have better connections that compliment your happiness sooner that you think. :)
Yeah girl! That is exactly how I felt when I stood on top a few weeks ago. Such an awesome accomplishment.
Dr. Seuss, "Oh, The Places You'll Go". I shared this with my 20 year old daughter who is in college and going through alot as well. She read it and called to thank me for it. She said it was exactly what she needed at exactly the right time. Brooklyn, you are an amazing person. You're an inspiration to far more people than you can imagine. I hope life treats you kind, and I know you are strong enough to conquer anything. Oh, the Places You'll Go!
Congratulations!
Today is your day.
You're off to Great Places!
You're off and away!
You have brains in your head.
You have feet in your shoes
You can steer yourself
any direction you choose.
You're on your own. And you know what you know.
And YOU are the guy who'll decide where to go.
You'll look up and down streets. Look 'em over with care.
About some you will say, "I don't choose to go there."
With your head full of brains and your shoes full of feet,
you're too smart to go down any not-so-good street.
And you may not find any
you'll want to go down.
In that case, of course,
you'll head straight out of town.
It's opener there
in the wide open air.
Out there things can happen
and frequently do
to people as brainy
and footsy as you.
And when things start to happen,
don't worry. Don't stew.
Just go right along.
You'll start happening too.
OH!
THE PLACES YOU'LL GO!
You'll be on your way up!
You'll be seeing great sights!
You'll join the high fliers
who soar to high heights.
You won't lag behind, because you'll have the speed.
You'll pass the whole gang and you'll soon take the lead.
Wherever you fly, you'll be the best of the best.
Wherever you go, you will top all the rest.
Except when you don' t
Because, sometimes, you won't.
I'm sorry to say so
but, sadly, it's true
and Hang-ups
can happen to you.
You can get all hung up
in a prickle-ly perch.
And your gang will fly on.
You'll be left in a Lurch.
You'll come down from the Lurch
with an unpleasant bump.
And the chances are, then,
that you'll be in a Slump.
And when you're in a Slump,
you're not in for much fun.
Un-slumping yourself
is not easily done.
You will come to a place where the streets are not marked.
Some windows are lighted. But mostly they're darked.
A place you could sprain both you elbow and chin!
Do you dare to stay out? Do you dare to go in?
How much can you lose? How much can you win?
And IF you go in, should you turn left or right...
or right-and-three-quarters? Or, maybe, not quite?
Or go around back and sneak in from behind?
Simple it's not, I'm afraid you will find,
for a mind-maker-upper to make up his mind.
You can get so confused
that you'll start in to race
down long wiggled roads at a break-necking pace
and grind on for miles across weirdish wild space,
headed, I fear, toward a most useless place.
The Waiting Place...
...for people just waiting.
Waiting for a train to go
or a bus to come, or a plane to go
or the mail to come, or the rain to go
or the phone to ring, or the snow to snow
or waiting around for a Yes or a No
or waiting for their hair to grow.
Everyone is just waiting.
Waiting for the fish to bite
or waiting for wind to fly a kite
or waiting around for Friday night
or waiting, perhaps, for their Uncle Jake
or a pot to boil, or a Better Break
or a sting of pearls, or a pair of pants
or a wig with curls, or Another Chance.
Everyone is just waiting.
NO!
That's not for you!
Somehow you'll escape
all that waiting and staying.
You'll find the bright places
where Boom Bands are playing.
With banner flip-flapping,
once more you'll ride high!
Ready for anything under the sky.
Ready because you're that kind of a guy!
Oh, the places you'll go! There is fun to be done!
There are points to be scored. there are games to be won.
And the magical things you can do with that ball
will make you the winning-est winner of all.
Fame! You'll be famous as famous can be,
with the whole wide world watching you win on TV.
Except when they don't.
Because, sometimes, they won't.
I'm afraid that some times
you'll play lonely games too.
Games you can't win
'cause you'll play against you.
All Alone!
Whether you like it or not,
Alone will be something
you'll be quite a lot.
And when you're alone, there's a very good chance
you'll meet things that scare you right out of your pants.
There are some, down the road between hither and yon,
that can scare you so much you won't want to go on.
But on you will go
though the weather be foul
On you will go
though your enemies prowl
On you will go
though the Hakken-Kraks howl
Onward up many
a frightening creek,
though your arms may get sore
and your sneakers may leak.
On and on you will hike
and I know you'll hike far
and face up to your problems
whatever they are.
You'll get mixed up, of course,
as you already know.
You'll get mixed up
with many strange birds as you go.
So be sure when you step.
Step with care and great tact
and remember that Life's
a Great Balancing Act.
Just never forget to be dexterous and deft.
And never mix up your right foot with your left.
And will you succeed?
Yes! You will, indeed!
(98 and 3 / 4 percent guaranteed.)
KID, YOU'LL MOVE MOUNTAINS!
So...
be your name Buxbaum or Bixby or Bray
or Mordecai Ali Van Allen O'Shea,
you're off to Great Places!
Today is your day!
Your mountain is waiting.
So...get on your way!
Goodness. This is inspiring! Thank you thank you thank you
LandmarkAdventures
I was hoping you would get to read it. I came across a youtube vid of an AT thru hiker reading it aloud at a campfire in front of a shelter. It really struck a chord with me. Sorry it was so long. My first time posting and I didn't know for sure how to post a link.
Yeah, no worries. I'm good. Though this was the only footage I have of summiting Pyramid. So, it was a meaning and theme. It also kinda gives a glimpse as to why my editing took longer than it should have. Ya know... life.
Right on. I can't get over the size of the flies at the top of Pyramid. Gross!
You are amazing! My moment was at 9:08 of this vid for you. I love that about you! On my bucket list is to one day hike with you. This old fat lady needs some moments of 9:08 in her life! HUGS!! Onward!
Thanks for sharing. I hope to see you out on the trail one day. I'm on the Nevada side healing up a broken kneecap right now so it may be a while :)
your vids are great, its great to see your adding more stuff again, keep up the good work, your knife vids inspired me to make one, i can only thank you, everything you do is great.
Sorry to hear about your breakup Brooklynn. At least you had the wilderness to turn to and your friends, Jack and Beef Stroganoff for comfort during this tough time. Hang in there. Someone new and special will come into your life when you least expect it and they will adore you. ;o) Cheers.
It stands to reason that persons with exceptional talents need exceptional partners and your instincts for healing are well-grounded. You've already proven yourself in many positive ways, so set your resolve now to be patient and kind to yourself. You deserve nothing less.
Yaaay!!! Super video, super heartfelt story. Hiking is the new psychotherapy. Did you ever notice that 'trial' is similar to 'trail' for dyslexic people? There might be wisdom in this, or maybe not.
Thinkin' N' Drinkin' would be a great country music album.
Gonna be doing this hike in the next couple of weeks!
oh no! I am sorry about the heartbreak but I hope your heart is mending. great video, I truly enjoy watching your adventures.
i love ur videos great job
You go Girl!! go get it!!
I love this video. Bummed I didn't watch it sooner. Screw the Ben and jerrys dude I'm with you, I'd rather take off and hit the mountains when I got a lot on my mind, the wilderness has such a calming peaceful effect, unlike anything else. I'm a little late but I hope your feelin better.
I didn't make it up the boulder scramble of Pyramid Peak my first time. It bothered me all week after, so the following weekend I attempted it again and conquered the boulder section...made it to the peak.
thanks for sharing. enjoyed it very much:)
Devil Makes Three, Jack Daniels and Wilderness. Men not needed. You're good B!!
Good video - sorry for what happened. I have often found the wilderness a wonderfully accepting, neutral "ally" in life. I distinctly remember when I grabbed my gear and flew across the country to circumnavigate Mt. Hood b/c life sucked at the time. Hike your own hike, both on and off the trail...
Excellent!
Watching you take that swig of Jack reminded me of the exact same reaction I get when I used to drink JD. Here is a suggestion for you....try some other whiskey like Jim Beam. It has the same salutary effects but you avoid the shudders. IMHO JD is rot gut....I think Kessler's is smoother. And much, much cheaper!
But .....the Jack Daniels song was cool and was perfect for the video.
I am enjoying your videos. Thanks.
Love your videos....love them all. I do not know who the dummy was that broke up with you....BUT....from what Ive seen of your videos....its his loss. A beautiful girl who has a sense of humor, loves the outdoors., and has a great personality....what was this guy thinking? Anyway...again...love the vids and keep them coming. Chin up and keep on hiking.
Thanks for Sharing
That was brilliant. Been there.
Congrats on the successful summit, by the way.
What a strange thing youtube is. Somehow it can manage to take a person that I've never met, never spoken to, and live nowhere near, and make me feel like I know them personally. But i suppose the credit is due to you and your ability to be candid on camera, as well as your willingness to share your more "vulnerable" moments. All that said, i feel like a friend of mine just told me that they got dumped. Which is a little wierd as I hold no illusions that we are for realzies friends but rather "internet aquaintences" of sorts. All the same I'm sorry, breakups suck.
Thank you. Yes, CZcams is a fabulous place. AND personal. Unless they're producing a web series or something, most CZcamsrs are talking directly to people who can comment back which makes it all quite intimate. Most record from their homes. We may never have met but you know what my bedroom looks like. LOL I've made a lot of "internet friends." Some I've met in real life. We can be friends :)
Excellent :) one can never have too many friends.
So because of your inspirational videos, i spent the entire day in desolation wilderness today. I live 12 hours north of here.. that place is amazing. Thank you. Without you I would have never known about it. You positive attitude has inspired me to hike over 200 miles in the last year. Fuc( the douchebag minority haters. They have no clue. Please come back. :(
oh wow! Thank you. affecting others in a positive way and actually inspiring is what keeps me holding on. I'm so glad to know you discovered the wonders in your backyard. lol. May your trails be long and your pack light.
I know its been 3 months since this happened to you and I'm sure you've moved on, but I feel badly for you. You are an amazing person and are not defined by the poor decisions of someone else. Even though we have never met, as it says in Toy Story I think, "You've got a friend in me." Take care Brooklynn. Keep hiking girl!
awesome journey, ive watched this a few times.. "stop judging" /ok, but i wont stop laughing your narrations are too much fun
Men have died and worms have eaten them: But not for love.
That is the inspiration my father would give me when my heart was broken.
Godspeed, Brooklyn
Way to go girl! You are good enough!
That mountain can’t hang that over you any more!
Hooyah!!
Sorry about the heartache... but remember: That which does not kill us.. hurts like Hell, but at least it doesn’t kill us.
;)
You definitely dropped through F bomb a lot more in this video... lol
You are hilarious Brooklyn :p
Brooklynn, you had talked about a vid on blister care. I'm guessing you would need to have a blister to show how you treat yours, but I noticed on the JMT videos you talked about taping your feet. From your experience it would be nice to see how you did that.
Enjoy vids hope your feeling better
Sometimes life just sucks. There is no way around it, you just have to go through it.
Feel sorry for you, you have a wonderful attitude ! Keep on getting out there girl. That snake was crazy ! I mean crazy ! Hope things are better in the future ,things always have a way of working out,Peace
Cragdwella Dude, telling someone that you feel sorry for them is stupid. Who are you to feel sorry for someone?
"Dude" I can feel sorry for whoever I want. I feel sorry for you now !
Cragdwella Norell A. Winburn Thank you for the support guys, in BOTH your ways. Hope you found the video inspiring to go out and conquer all that challenges you! Peace
I believe it was Kerouac in his book Dharma Bums (where coincidentally enough he was talking about the Sierras), who emphasized a wonderful characteristic of the mountains: While all the humans of the world come and go, as do their trials and tribulations, challenges, accomplishments, failures, grief, excitement and all those other things Pink Floyd ever wrote songs about, the mountains stand their in their nirvana, unimpressed and uncaring, waiting for nothing, fearing nothing. Unfortunately (for them) it seems to me they're never amused, either. Then again, the more I know, the more I don't.
the best video yet. Well, if you threw in some knife making at the end - that would qualify it as the best video of all time. You are dead on about getting out into the woods. There's no better place to take a time out and get your mind right...whisky always helps too.
Heard of Mc Dodge in Washington Olimpic forest? I'm going to be the female version in Oregon next year. I can't wait till I can just be out there everyday, no end to the piece and quite.
Sorry Landmark... The wilderness is the best place for consolidation. And always inspires you to move on because there's always more to see.
You picked a great way to to deal with the break up. I go backpacking too when I need to think, but use Jameson Whiskey to turn off the brain when I'm thinking too much. Life goes on. There goes my theory that you were abducted by aliens.
Yeah, no aliens, just a bit of the downs that resulted in not being productive enough to edit and do stuff online. I'm not trying to glorify this issue as excuses or reasons, but just the fact that I'm human and climbed Pyramid! YAY! LOL
Of course you are good enough. Good enough to the thousands who subscribe to your channel. Good enough to/for yourself. Good enough for your next relationship. Good enough for Pyramid Peak, or the JMT, or the TYT....or anything you want to do, anyone you want to be with and anyone you want to be.
I do enjoy your vids. Thanks for posting...but there is one thing...I do think Jose is a much better travel companion than Jack. Hey, to each his/her own.
Thank you. And yeah, sometimes different companions make for a different and better experience. Jose, you are loved as well!
We all must walk this trail, for some it is a short one but for those of us who have felt complete release from the beauty in witch u have defined, the wind felt against our skin the earth beneath our feet the trees whispering to us as we seek that one place we will never leave the sun cresting the horizon welcoming us to a new day. I commend u on your journey and I can only imagine the soul mate u will find ......... Thank u
Sometimes you just gotta kick ass and howl at the moon.. and your sure do that swell!
Still miss you :(
Very nice video. I for one haven't been to the top to Pyramid Peak, I've only been to the top of Horsetail Falls and a little bit pass Aloha Lake. How long of a hike is it do you think from Horsetail Falls (at the top) to the top of Pyramid Peak? My main thing I'm getting at is, I'd like to do it in a one day trip. I'm a pretty experienced hiker if that counts, lol.
Unless you are looking for a challenge, hiking Pyramid Peak from the top of Horsetail Falls is not really the best way to go. Although there is no official trail to the top of Pyramid Peak, there is a very well-defined and easy to follow use trail that takes you there (although the last few hundred vertical feet of climbing is boulder hopping any way you go). This trail begins about a mile (or so) west of the Pyramid Creek (Horsetail Falls) Trailhead on 50, and climbs up through Rocky Canyon. And although it is not exactly an EASY hike (about four miles and 4000ft of climbing), it can easily be done as a dayhike.
is the hike really exposed?? lol im scared of heights but as long as its not sheer cliffs off the trial im ok haha
Thanks for another great video...... I wonder what kind of snake is a "water snake." ..... leeeeee
Hey I know what you mean about the wilderness. I've come to the biggest 'philosophical' conclusions when outside surrounded by nothing but rocks and trees and the ocean. And when I can't get out there, it all ends up bottling up inside until I can get out, or, sometimes, until it gets out, usually at the least opportune moment.
You made a 60 year old man cry and laugh.
I know what you mean about the wilderness accepting you and also having to accept the wilderness. I hiked extensively in the Crystal Range in the 1980s and early 90’s. I did the Tahoe Yosemite Trail when the book first came out, climbed half dome, winter backpacking yada yada yada.
I stopped hiking because it got too lonely up there. I found that sharing the experience was as important as being there. I took up riding centuries instead with no regrets. I needed the social interaction.
I recently got back into hiking after feeling my own mortality. I was treated for atrial flutter, I watched a friend die of brain cancer, and I have another friend who’s MD is advancing. Like an old friend Desolation Wilderness called me. And I answered.
Between talking to my cell phone cam and staying in contact with my wife and friends via my InReach, I don’t find myself being lonely. Ironically, I now prefer to hike and camp solo. Yet I do enjoy speaking with people on the trail. Like you I have had some feedback from blogging that was been wonderful. I wish we had this technology back in the 80’s.
The damn rocks and boulders haven’t changed in 20 years! The trees around Dick’s lake are noticeably taller. I felt like the rocks, and trees and mountains and ridges were greeting me. Simple Joy.
Take care and heal, Brooklynn.
Thank you for sharing with me, well, with everyone who can see this. Some people understand these wilderness stories; but then there are those that KNOW them. Have lived them. And I hope everyone can go to places like this or find the same deep connection and freedom through a place or activity. It's that old friend to rely on. I hope in another 20 years, Desolation sill hasn't changed accept for the trees being a little taller. And may it forever welcome you home.
Breakups suck but you seemed to be able to handle it better than most (as well as one can). But in order to grow we all need to go through some shit, eh? ...on a different note, that logbook you signed, was that a geocache or simply a logbook someone left up there for those who made it to the top? I also noticed other people signed it the same day as you, Did you see others out there? Just curious.
It's an official logbook. And yes, I saw about 6 other people during the day. Some climbing together and all from the other side. I saw no one going my way, only up top. You can see that others signed after me. I was up there for about an hour, hanging with the marmot and eating lunch. (I had to wait for two people to leave so I could film. I hate filming in front of people LOL I get shy)
9:08 says it all...
Hang in there.
Sorry about the heartbreaking way, know how you feel.... but if you make this up, you can make anything....

I went to Yosemite after my ex-girlfriend and I broke up, just to get away from the noise. Break-ups suck. Sorry you had to go through that. At least this is a way better way to get over it than just haunting bars or something.
Aren't you glad you didn't break up in the Wintertime?
Thanks for sharing this video. It goes to show we are all human and need to love each other. It would make Jesus happy if we all showed kindness and love to one another instead of the insatiable competition Americans have for each other-just look at our driving
You have so much talent bottled inside you. This must be very difficult to deal with. Focus on your "landmark" should make things easier for you.
Not so say I'm entertained by your pain and sadness. No.
This. It's good stuff.
Thank you. I understand. I chose to upload it in the hopes to inspire others and the fact that you all are getting something positive from it makes it all worth it.
looooollll u r nice miss i dont know your name vry nice here in brazil have some pretty n desolate places for make your mind free of bad things n we have cachaça loooool
Do not worry you are a extremely beautiful woman and some dude or woman will pick you up :) cheers love your vids. I have been single for about 9yrs now loving it :)
Women... can't figure them out... can't live with them... can't live without them... we all been there, it sucks!
I saw the reaction to Jack at 4:30. Jack is repulsive stuff, as per evidence of your reaction. Try a decent Scotch - Macallan is great and would be appropriate for those special times, but TJs or Costco have a descent blended scotch which is cheap.
No shades? I guess you really do "hate 'em". Lol.
Feel better!
I couldn't find them!
LandmarkAdventures Thieving marmots probably took them.
