    "Just call it a 'car accident'" is what my doctor said. Wish it was a cool story involving marmots in top hats, but, this is how I tore my PCL. Also, some updates.

    Loved it. Made me laugh too loudly at nearly 2 am! Loved the marmot in the top hat & monocle as a story character. He should guest star more often (then you can keep an eye on him). Hope to hear more from you soon.

    I hurt my knee (meniscal fray) on a hike last June. Steep downhill with my pack on and my dog's leash clipped to my belt. Not a good scenario. I went to the physical therapist (mine wasn't a terrorist) but not before the backpacking season was over. I'm very much hoping it doesn't give me too much grief this season. At any rate, it sounds like you are being diligent about your knee recovery. Personally the fear of losing an entire season was a big motivator for me.

    I never had an issue with my knees but this past fall/winter, I had to hang up the hiking boots for a few months due to plantar fasciitis in my left heel. Hope your knee is getting better and thanks for the entertaining videos.

    I tore my ACL boxing. Totally snapped it as in its not there anymore. I never repaired it but did Pilates yoga and various boot camp exercise classes and my legs got so strong it was like it never happened. Trick is gotta do strength exercises forever. When my legs get weaker it starts to bother me again. I was even running on it at its best. Good luck

      Agreed, tore my PCL. If I do the strength exercises then it's fine, if I stop for a few weeks, then it starts bothering me. Aero step xl is a great wobble board for knees (one legged stand) as you get better start squatting and other moves. Also squatting with weights I've found very good for it.
      Love the videos and inspired me to hopefully do the JMT next year.

    Bummer Brooklyn!. I tore my ACL 20 years ago. 6 months later I hiked up Mt Dana with my brace thanks to the physical terrorist and my doctor. I hate those people too but they pushed me and it was beneficial. Do the work and keep your legs strong. I'm 55 now and my knees suck after 3 surgeries but I was able to do the JMT last summer and can still do most things. It's all about cartilage which I no longer have in 1 knee. Don't jog on pavement and stay in shape and you will be fine. I wore my brace when playing sports for about a year and now I just use those over the counter knee braces you can get from CVS. I'm planning on spending a lot of time in Desolation Wilderness this summer so please don't bear spray me bro if I see you.

  • @apartmentaquariums

    That sucks, sorry to hear. I fell off a telephone pole while working for the cable company. Shredded acl, pcl, stretched the side ones to the width of a pencil. Acl replaced twice, pcl replaced once, 4 surgery's, 2 years therapy. I got a brace similar called a cti brace, did they cast your knee and make the brace molded to fit you? I got lucky and had the doctor that works on the 49ers football team, told me if I played ball my career would be over, but I would walk fine, but hard time running. Had 1 doc that wouldn't even let my past the waiting area cause he haven't seen anything like it in 10 years. Hacking with my brace isn't to bad, though I've never done a long hike just a couple of hours. Get it healed before you go out on a long hike, would suck to get stuck out there, and have to pay for the chopper evac. Hope you feel better soon.

      @apartmentaquariums Před 9 lety

      Oh do the thing where you put your fist on top of each other too look like the knee joint, then go wrist to wrist, that was my knee, I had gaffs on for climbing the telephone pole, so a strap around my leg just under my knee, and it forced the upper bone past that strap. Lol didn't know I was hurt till I stood up and fell over in extreme pain, had to ask the customer to call a ambulance, she said ok, but can I still get my install done today, lol.

    17 years old, fishing, yes fishing, with boots up to my knees. The banks of the pond are steep. So steep that to get up them I had to do a foot over foot sideways walk up the bank. Well the ground was soft, wet, and gave way under one of my sideways steps and I tore the cartilage in my right knee. This is 1987 and the scope surgery was new so of course they had to use it, hospital, surgery and three stitches.. then physical terrorist, your words not mine. LOL
    Fast forward to 2009. I've been working construction for 20 years plus.. I'm in a garage and I step between two stacks of lumber with my left foot. I lead with the left ever since the previous experience. I get out of balance, leg is trapped from the knee down and boom I'm on the floor. I heard the same snap crackle pop I heard in the first go with my right knee so I know what is coming right? Well no. It is the future, aka 2009. So instead of the fancy surgery to remove the broken bits no, they go in with a needle large enough to roll a BB through beside my knee cap. They drain the fluid and then pump in steroids. The surgery I was asleep, didn't feel a thing. The needle deal was unreal. The doctor said before he started, it is ok to yell. Well yell was almost what came out. When I limped out of that room the patients in his office did this push back into their chairs. LOL PT after that one too. The odd thing is that the second one was a far worse injury. I hit my thigh bone at the knee hard enough to leave bruises on it that was visible in the x ray. Modern healthcare, pfft!

    Okay, I know this is an old posting, but yes, I tore my ACL playing HS football. I had a couple surgeries to clean-up the loose stuff and managed with physical therapy for... well... a long time. I had it rebuilt with a hamstring tendon (who needs all those tendons anyway) a few years ago and have been normal (some would debate this) ever since.

    I had to figure out what motion made it "pop out," then try to avoid, esp. when lugging heavy BP. My knees don't like twisting. Also, downhill is by far the hardest. So either I was panting or whining. And cussing up and down. .
    My PT was my good friend's daughter. She laughed when she saw my knees. They bend backwards.

      Lee Humes eek! I've been lucky for 36 years and never had a knee injury. So this is new and annoying. I broke my shoulder 3 times and had surgery to remove part of the collar bone but never cared cuz I could still hike! I'm nervous about damaging it further.

    I had a motorcicle accident 2 months ago, I was driving down the Iztaccihuatl Volcano, hit a rock, lost control and I went down like a log, the motorcicle landed on my ankle. And yes broke my shinbone just where it meets the ankle. long story short I have 2 nails now and 2 badass scars (or as I call them battle wounds). Two days ago I started therapy and let me tell you, Physiotherapist should be renamed to "masive pain inflicting /&()$%&/ ". He wants me to star walking unasisted in 3-4 weeks wich is GOOD but I mean, I cry a little everytime there's therapy :´(. So from one Injured to another. wet well very soon :)

      matanuska high I don't in California. Black bears and mountain lions rarely bother anyone. But where my dad is there has been wolf attacks on the trail. They've snatched kids. I think Montana is finally allowing hunting again because they were so overpopulated.

      LandmarkAdventures I'd load up on bear spray too. A high caliber weapon is good only when you have time to aim. The bear spray will give you time and may stop the charge (bear or wolf). I would hate visiting their habitat and then taking their life for our recreation.

    • @ClockCutter
      @ClockCutter Před 9 lety

      Eric Bost The idea that one is better off with bear spray rather than a high caliber weapon is bizarre, and indicates you've got a thing about guns rather than any real experience with them in the wild.

    • @MatanuskaHIGH
      @MatanuskaHIGH Před 9 lety

      yea wolves get close to anchorage on the military bases here in alaska and these woman had to use mace on a pack of them and people lost lots of dogs to that pack..the fish and game shot the alphas and the heard retreated back into the valley they usually stay in..harsh winters they will get bold..sumertime i would imagine they would be plenty fed..but wolves are strong in #s compared to bears..they circle you and even a gun wont help unless you know which is the alpha or you have enough bullets to take out 20+ as a pack of wolves can get quite large if not kept in check and they have lots of food available for a time. but once the fod gets short they get ruthless.. i hiked the same valleyy that pack was living in in march one winter and we had em circle our tent at night and fllow our tracks but they always stayed out of sight behind us somewhere..eary feeling but we had ice picks and climbing gear we would have fought to the death if we had to..that trip the avalanches were our only danger we luckily missed one on a route we were gonna climb by waking up an hour late cause it was -7 and our bags were rated to 0 so we didnt wanna get out of the tent and make a fire....lol
