    People like WosX say that the slowed down Diana Ross sample and others that are in the original Floral Shoppe album are "creepy". Honestly, I don't find the original Floral Shoppe creepy. But Floral Shoppe 2?

    Gotta be honest, I've listened to this album a lot because I think it's an interesting listen. I couldn't care less about the commentary or artistic implications behind it. One of the better creepy and dark vaporwave albums I've heard.

    • @PadChennington
      @PadChennington  Před 6 lety +11

      It's interesting seeing that there really isn't one big agreement on if this album is good or bad, everyone really has their own opinion which does, without a doubt, make this thing significant. Look at the comments on here, some people hate the music AND the effort to showcase the aesthetic of the album, while some find it really interesting...

      To be honest I never thought about that or ever realized a specific time I ever listen to it! I can definitely atleast say that more eerie stuff like this album is definitely better at night, unless your going for a super ironic experience and playing this on like a beautiful day at the beach lmao

    • @ProtoMan935
      @ProtoMan935 Před 6 lety

      XD i imagined myself doing that. Well, i mostly hear vaporwave at night because there is no noise or work to do at night, you just sit back and deeply relax with some sweet tunes. As the outside world doesn't interfer, you just strongly focus on the music and the feelings it produces on you and it feels real good.
      As for this album i heard it last night and it was interesting, i don't think it is that bad because the more times you listen to it you can get a different feeling, that's the distinct trait of vaporwave in my opinion.

    it feels like someone who realized the impact that Floral Shoppe (1) had on the world of modern music, realized how extreme it has become and decides to act upon it, whether it's irony, rage or sadness that fueled the making of the album and the subsequent result to the ears of the listener. It's a very interesting way to do so, most people would try to return to an older, more recognisable style but not Floral Shoppe 2, which almost makes fun of "what has become of vaporwave", "just a bunch of experimentation" with little to no aesthetic and nostalgia that characterized the initial vaporwave, the one we all cherish.

      It's one of my favorite vaporwave albums. It's a scratched and chaotic "thinking" of the state of the genre til that point, one of its "logical conclusions" (much like "Shader" or "Sky Tower 2032" - and "Vaporwave is Dead", of course). The fact that it accomplishes this by being extremely retarded and sarcastic and bad only appeals to me

    Cluttered thoughts:
    Maybe just call this a "first impression" but after listening to FS2, I would compare it to going through a haunted house and I'd say the same reason most people willing to listen to it, decide to listen to it for the same reason people like to go through a haunted house.
    Vaporwave in itself is sort of like playing Atari in the sense that although there is imagery provided to create associations, it requires a lot of imagination on the part of the person digesting the media.
    Is FS2 a musical piece? Id say it uses music more as the sticky black handrail on a stuttering down-escalator to give the listener something to hold onto. There are musical elements used as tools, but overall FS2 seems more like an art piece than an album comprised of pieces of music. While there are concept albums or albums that are intentionally designed in an order to flow a certain way, the musicality of those pieces mean that the tracks feel like they can each stand on their own. I don't think this piece is meant to be anything other than a single piece, playing individual parts or listening out of order would be the same thing as only watching clips of a movie or cutting a movie into "DVD chapters" setting them on a random shuffle and then pressing play to see what happens.
    To me, this is less music and more a soundtrack to be used as the canvas for an individual's imagination--- yet this idea is not unfamiliar to music, and vaporwave in particular.
    So the end result? Idk. I would say technically this is "vaporwave" in concept, but in the simplest purely visceral non-intellectual/philosophical sense... mehhh I wouldn't call it music.

    The thing that made Floral Shoppe so interesting was not only the warm. nostalgic sounds but how strangely they were put together in such a post-modern fashion. I see this new album as a progression of certain parts of FP the were kind of industrial and cold ( like that one song with the Turok sample ), she wanted to explore something much more dark and cold/sinister. I find the new album to be good but the original Floral Shoppe is so much better to me because of the warm, colorful, frantic palette of genres and sounds ranging from R&B, synth pop, experimental and certain moments that are almost progressive rock or hair-metal-esque. On the other hand I think FP is an unrepeatable album so I think that is why Ramona decided to do something very strange, sinister and cold, so we can expect something fresh and new every time she releases a new album instead of expecting that FP vibe for every album.

  • @gsmooth4279

    Personally I listened to it purely out of morbid curiosity and the love of the aesthetic. Very rarely did I actually enjoy the sound of the “music,” but I was willing to sit through it because it was like the evil twin of Floral Shoppe. It’s forbidden vaporwave, anti-vaporwave, and this sense of esotericism is what made me listen to it (and its relatively short length. No way I could sit through half an hour or more of this). I guess I proved the creator right by listening to rubbish (not insulting the album, but its express purpose is to be rubbish) for the sake of aesthetics.

    Damn. You went there =D
    Well ... where do *I* begin with this? =] ... (and yes, I had FS2 playing in the background while writing the bulk of this)
    The short story with me and music is that music and I have been together for a long time. During that long time, I have come across moments where I have challenged my ideas about music could be. In so doing, I have learned to appreciate music that others don't. This includes but not limited to Stravinsky's The Rite of Spring, Isao Tomita's take on The Planets, Vangelis's Beaubourg and Invisible Connections, most of Autechre's discography, etc. Hell, I would say my favourite Beatles song is "Revolution 9" (and yes, there are some others too).
    Before I continue with my story, I don't seek out the difficult art to make some "better than you" assertion that "I can handle experimental bullshit". I see it as merely hearing possibilities in art. Experimentation in art, to me, is a chance to *try* something. It's in trying something that new things can be created. Hell, vaporwave was the result of an experiment, particularly Daniel Lopatin (as Chuck Person) doing plunderphonics to create a new sound that caught on became a thing. Sometimes, an experiment fails. But other times, it can create something unexpected and intriguing and that can, in turn, become something else. After all, albums like Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band or Pet Sounds or The Dark Side of the Moon wouldn't sound like they did without some of the avant-garde composers from the 1950s/1960s.
    I was "late to the party" when it came to vaporwave (late 2017). While I had some tastes of it beforehand - hearing Saint Pepsi's "Enjoy Yourself" as a channel theme; seeing Anthony Fantano's reviews of some releases (Floral Shoppe and Nmesh's Pharma); loving Oneohtrix Point Never's R Plus Seven back in 2013 - it was Wolf's "Vaporwave: A Brief History" that gave me the first grounding in the genre/style and gave me a ton of springboards from which to do my own venturing. (And yes, you Pad also played a role ... this is how I got into dds.wmv). When it came to FS2, I perked up my ears to it as, like I said earlier, I'm intrigued by the experimental music. Usually whenever someone says "This is unlistenable", I take it as a challenge to hear if it's really the case. So, I listened to the full album and ... I really liked it. To my ears, I really enjoyed the anarchic arrangement of sounds and its full-bodied flow. It sounded no different than a lot of Autechre's work (another artist I love for a long time ... and I came into them starting from Confield).
    In subsequent listens, as well as listening to other vaporwave releases, I enjoy it more and more. For an album that was reportedly made whilst drunk, it's remarkably cohesive. I think a lot of it has to do with the fact it does employ coherent loops. The "Ebola rap" (to use a Reddit comment) also helps to give it a cohesion. In learning that DARKPYRAMID is most likely one of HKE's aliases (and I believe it was actually confirmed), it shows this was an album with a purpose like a lot of HKE's work. (HKE was also influenced by Warp Records and I can hear this especially in OMNIA.)
    To wrap things up, I think FS2's place in vaporwave is that a very good showcase of its relentlessly creative spirit. What attracted me to the style in the first place was the sense that there are no rules (or at least very few rules). It's a free and open style to where you can make it your own. If you want to get down and funky like S U R F I N G or Skyler Spence/Saint Pepsi, you can do that. If you want to get lost in a space a la 식료품groceries or 猫 シ Corp. (specifically Pall Mall), you can do that. If you want to go hard like dds.wmv or wosX, you can do that too. All are welcome. I think the only rule is that it should be you and it should be sincere/honest. As long as artists do that, vaporwave will never be dead ;) =]

    • @DerekPower
      @DerekPower Před 6 lety +1

      P.S. FS2's inspiration was ▣世界から解放され▣ [or "Liberated from the world"] by one of INTERNET CLUB's aliases ░▒▓新しいデラックスライフ▓▒░ (or New Deluxe Life). Compared that to this ... I like FS2 a bit more because I tend to like that "wall of sound" feel whereas INTERNET CLUB tends to go for the lo-fi. That one is growing on me as well. But again, the whole point of experimentation in music is simply to try something new. If it works, it works and it becomes something.

    When I was little I was sitting down one day and I said well what happens of everyone makes music and they take all the tunes and all the lyrics to the point where no one can make music anymore 😂

    I'm not gonna pretend like I'm cool by saying that I like it cuz I definitely don't. But I like that the album points out how ironic it is that you could literally put anything on an album and even if you try to convince the listener that it isn't good, some listeners will go out of their way to like it

    There are a lot of redeemable qualities to this album, it's okay. but I dont think it has any real connection to Floral Shoppe, I think it's stupid to call this album Floral Shoppe 2. I mean I could just call my next album Dark Side of the Moon 2 and get a lot of listens but I'm not pink floyd and my album has little to do with dark side of the moon so if I did that I would just be riding the coat tails of better musicians for the sake of exposure which is exactly what dark pyramid did with this release.

    I feel like the album was a bit of like... a rejection of any sort of "fame" she got from the original album, and just went to try and make the weirdest, quickest nonsense BS waste of 20 minutes. But I like how you try to give it a slight pass at the end with a "i didn't hear this the first time", hah.

  • @thatonedude9744

    I find this album too cynical to enjoy personally. Liberated from the World is a fairly standard Broken Transmission album by today’s standards, and to have such a strong negative reaction to it that you make an entire album to mock it, feels a little overly negative

    Music is literally sound with meaning,
    that's just it, and the meaning doesn't have to be inherent or obvious,
    you just have to think it's meaningful (also music sans meaning works as well, as long as that's what is intended)

      Its critical of neoliberal capitalism but not necessarilly marxist. Vaporwave doesnot highlight class distinctions. I prefer an Absurdist intepretation.
