Vektroid - Neo Cali. Its one of my favourite albums of all time, vaporwave or no.
Asura Revolver : ...Into The Void
James Webster has such a deep, existential view on this and after hearing his take on the album it really adds a few new floors to climb. The Megatower is alive.
I know that was super dope thought process. I wish I could think at that kind of level.
Dig your Bo pic
robby! yes dude...I got the chance to talk with him at Econ, such a friendly fella as well.
So James’ passion to the genre was built on a negative foundation? That’s pretty cool
right?! interesting stuff
i need to turn that album into a film.
it's a life goal for me now.
I wanna help
If you ever need help, im down.
what do we do?
amazing idea. please let me know if you need help
You've got support in me as well.
I feel like nmesh’s “Dream Sequins” should definitely be included in this video series. It’s personally one of my top 5 Vaporwave albums, and it’s just one of those albums where you can’t help yourself but listen to it start to finish, no matter how many times you’ve already done so. It’s as close to a perfect album without being perfect as you can get.
I've covered it pretty in depth in this video! but would love to do a solely dedicated nmesh video soon!
czcams.com/video/U7xsCf75gng/video.html
I like Dream Sequins but it's most certainly NOT an album that makes you want to listen from start to finish. It has some moments that are unsurpassed but it's inconsistent and trails off in the second half I feel.
Michaelsoft Binbows hey friend, you’re totally entitled to your opinion, but we’ll just have to disagree. Thanks for commenting anyway.
Pad Chennington thanks for pointing that out. I can’t believe I completely missed that episode.
@@michaelsoftbinbows8859 agreed. After the Avon part it just stops being interesting.
You didn't lie when you said this was gonna be one of your best videos.
;)
I’m suing the education system for making me be 3 hours late to this video.
THEY NEED TO BE PLAYING DERELICT IN SCHOOLS
James has an ok computer poster u know he’s a chief
the man is a legend!
I think Pad did it again and set a new standard for the vaporwave scene and documenting it. This is a great way to get the community together, talk about an album we all love and get it out together. No longer is it just Pad's channel any more but now a hotspot for the communities voice. Thanks for letting me for being part of this.
Edit: PORTER VONGs full costume is completed
I really feel like Yung Leans Unknown Death is worth discussing
I liked stranger better
I said to Hank Williams, how lonely does it get?
Hank Williams hasn't answered yet
But I hear him coughing all night long
Oh, a hundred floors above me in the Tower of Song
I just like the way it looks in my mind when I picture it :)
Every since discovering the album the word "derelict" has not left my regular vocabulary
One of my fave albums ever.
What other albums do you like?
@@MTHU0080 kind of a long list but I'll name a few.
Telepath's テレパシーの
Amun dragoon's - socotra island
Unlimited dream company
Shoji 正治 - see you when i do
Fuji grid tv - prism genesis
And obviously the historic chuck person's eccojams and james ferraro's far side virtual
And holy shit i just skimmed through your youtube channel and I can tell you also are into this stuff. Any albums you would recommend?
thanks a lot pad, you are my favourite way to improve my skills in english
that's pretty cool to think you're learning English from vaporwave.
I've only ever seen James with glasses on, so I always assumed he looked like Ed Harris.
lmaooo
I'm ready to take a long and challenging quest into the Dark Megatower. Need to be sure to stock up on HP and Mana Potions. What classes y'all bringing to the party?
I've always liked dark mages like the ones from Fire Emblem. plus their clothes look tight.
@@MTHU0080 Nice. I've always found myself being stuck between mages and warrior type characters so I decided to split the difference and choose Paladin.
If it's my first time in any game, I always pick warrior.
@@sadgoy. That's usually my go to character too if I don't have an in-between option. I really like magic and stuff but it's hard to beat the simple joy of hitting things really hard with a big pointy thing.
@@revenantproxy9100 only thing that sucks is that in parties, everyone expects you to tank and if you're a shitty tank because you built your toon wrong, everyone hates you and starts bitching at you lol. Other than that, I love swinging virtual swords around. And blocking with virtual shields on occassion.
I've always wanted to see someone cover Internet Club's "Redefining The Workplace"
May be a little biased on my end, but that was THE vaporwave album that grabbed my attention and signed me up to dive further into this genre.
"I second that emotion"... Redefining The Workplace is seriously essential in the early days of the genre. Go to my channel for the quite excellent fan video I made for "System Focus".
so funny you said that... I was thinking of possibly doing internet club next time ;) we'll see!
That's cause@@PadChennington knows what's hot with the kids on the streets of the Virtual Plaza.
I love how the album cover looks massive, just like the album.
midnight television midnight television is classy classic
oooo ok ok
One of my favorite games growing up was Bomberman 64 and when I heard this record for the first time, it just ripped my heart open with nostalgia
that blue resort song is so good
For a future album documentary, there's this 2012 album that I know would Hit the Spot. With Your Touch, I think the potential could be Sky High. But at the End of the Night, I'm always looking forward to whatever you put out next.
ry guy... lets get you in on the next doc. we'll shoot some sick stuff
That Jenga analogy was golden.
he's a god dang legend lol love that man!
First and foremost, I have you to thank for introducing me to dds way back when. While I know they appear on the various Essentials lists, it was your review of I'll Try Living Like This that made me take note and made sure I would listen to it. I still maintain that that particular album is an illustration of emotional dysfunction. Its remix album is a great snapshot of the vapour scene at the time. It took some time but I went through the rest of the discography. For the record, I really like CLASSROOM SEXXTAPE if I had to pick one but I also enjoy: I'll Try Living Like This, VIRTUAL UTOPIA EXPERIENCE, 世界大戦OLYMPICS, 失われた時REGRET and, of course, DERELICTメガタワー
One thing I tried with DERELICTメガタワー was I had the album playing whilst reading the J.G. Ballard novel High-Rise. I picked it for the obvious connection as they both deal with tall buildings. But I knew there would be this interesting synergy between them. The novel is set in this new high-rise complex that is supposed to be a kind of "self-contained world", complete with a hypermarket. However, there is a pecking order in the building and we see this through the eyes of its central character, Robert Laing. There is the seemingly elusive penthouse floors that seem to govern everything else and be isolated from everyone else with its self-imposed decadence. And then ... there's everyone else. The whole book - like a lot of Ballard's work - is a kind of commentary of what happens when contain a society within a physical structure. Having listened to the album before as well as the whole of dds, I knew that the bleak atmosphere of the novel would fit well with dds's propensity to emit musical pathos. So I tried it .. and it worked like a charm. (If you are a fast reader, you can finish the book before the album ends but I would say the four-hour length should work for most readers.)
It was great that James was able to explain the backstory behind it as I"ve always found it fascinating to know what goes into something as both a listener and creator myself. Looking forward, as always, for more =]
And yeah, I'm always open for giving my opinions in future material =D
@@DerekPower I've talked about vaporwave a lot with Derek, he knows his stuff. +1 for seeing him on future videos.
I listened to this album the night of a suicide. A friend of mine killed himself. I didnt know him well and didnt know he did that til the morning after, but I didnt sleep and listened to this. And when I was told I holed up and just played this album again and again, sometimes also playing Everything at the End of Time. It was just-devastating. This album yanked me through it like a metallic and emotionless grip. And I needed it.
If I ever had the opportunity to write Derelict as a book, I'd take that in a heartbeat. Death's Dynamic Shroud is so close to my heart and this album is one of my personal favorites.
do it :)
Interestingly enough, James himself has said that he was working on writing the story of DERELICT and ENDLESS MEGATOWER. I'm not sure if he is still planning on finishing it, but he did do some work on it!
Not sure how I feel about the encouragement of face cams as a medium for commentary, but I think this is a unique exception.
face cams and old beige desktop mics.. for vaporwave!
Porter Vong I’ll do face-cam commentary on my hacked PS2 EyeToy.
It's crazy how an 84 song album that takes 4 hours long can give you the feels of like going into a dream tower with the 84 songs feeling like a different room within the dream tower. This is an amazing video thanks for talking about this masterpiece.
right? im telling you, ive never seen an album so connective to its narrative/artwork...great stuff
Pad, what do you think about Disconscious's Hologram Plaza? It's a classic album, I think it deserves a special review.
Yes! That album is so unsettling but fascinating at the same time. I feel like people don't talk about it enough.
I'm always so surprised how much you can talk about vaporwave, but I love it
u know me I can go on for hours
Punk is like reverse vaporwave with 50's guitar riffs.
yo im definitely loving this whole vaporwave documentary thing. helps me find new albums to listen to.
how bout your own album?
also I'd definitely like to know more about the other dds albums
I highly recommend looking at Virtua .zip. Its one of my favorite VW albums, almost entirely original, and one of Esprit/George Clanton's greatest works IMHO.
ahhh that could be a great one for this series! thank you
I remember the days where I spent many hours a day commuting (Riding trains, waiting for buses etc). I would see how far into this album I could get. When I tired of the album or got too busy to listen to music, I would have to restart “from the bottom”. It was a fun game, trying to see how far I could get each time. i never made it to the top in one sitting, but the mystique of those late tracks is what made it fun.
Have you talked about Chuck Person's Eccojams in the essentials series yet? I keep coming back to it these days. Arguably the first true vaporwave album, but it hasn't aged a bit. So many classics there, and a lot to say about it and its author, Oneohtrix Point Never. There are also multiple versions of the album and ways to listen to it... Would make a great video!
8:22 This sample could belong to Quake's OST
Omg the end of this vid is literally foreshadowing for the mixtape club releases
listened to the entire album while catching up on math at school a few days ago, one of my favorites in the scene now
best way to do it...have it in the background as you do some work. !
Do a giant claw record at some point! Dark Web seems the most essential
Thanks for a suggestion on a label.
Ayyyyyy thanks for the upload Pad! Keep up the good work ❤️
thank you! and thanks for watching :) any album suggestions you got for next video?
@@PadChennington Honestly man I'd frickin love to see you review t he new S U R F I N G album "Emotion" it was pretty cool in my opinion, definitely a step up from Incubo
This was your best video to date Pad! Thanks for making these 😊
You’re welcome dude 😊 Wish I had some ideas, but this channel has kind of been my main window into the whole scene! Other than maybe Telepath, Simpsonswave and Dan Mason, every vapor/ambient discovery I’ve made this last year or so has been because of your videos! The only album I can think of is maybe ‘Hellveterra’ off of Hireath Records, which I’m loving, but guessing thats on your radar already 😊
My favorite tracks are 7,12,13,35 and 76
i’ll be back in 4 hours. gotta re-listen
have you actually ever listened to the whole album all the way though tho?
Musics The Hang Up yes sir, it has been awhile though
DID U COME BACK
Pad Chennington yes! i’ve made it to the top of the mega tower and came back to watch. after watching, i can definitely say this is my favorite vaporwave project.
Nothing beats Death's Dynamic Shroud! I'll Try Living Like This is my first ever DDS album listened to, and I loved it! I have an entire playlist of DDS albums, spanning more than 1 day. My favorite is Heavy Black Heart :D
I listened to the entire thing whilst binging on a lengthy EVA fanfic, it was pretty fitting have to say..
Hey bro, I'd like to see a video of yours talking about Zadig The Jasp...
Another great video, I'm not so deep into the vaporscene and this series is a truly great intro for this genre, I have to find the time and listen to this project as well, sounds really promising.
thanks!! let me know if ya ever listen to it all the way through!
@@PadChennington So I actually did the mad thing of trying it out, I haven't finished it yet(i did listen up to track 58), I like it a lot, I want to finish it in some point next week and move on to their other projects
Derelict Megatower is an album that means a lot to me, so this is actually pretty interesting.
Listening to this album was such a treat. Thank you for these amazing videos about a genre that I am starting to love a hell of a lot!
absolute chad album
There's so many ways to take this. lol but I think it's a little more than just a joke album tbh. So idk, what your meaning is.
@@MTHU0080 the joke is......................
its a long album
really nice vid. cool to see many faces like kite or porter appearing
Awesome you watched, I appreciate the shoutout :P
Vaporwave needs more focused conceptual albums like DERELICT
I just got into DDS so your timing could not have been better timed. Love it.
Sounds like a perfect line up. I wonder if the only way you can get through the whole album is drunk... or not. :P
enjoy!
Fuck it . I'm gonna download it and try to get to the roof
Porter vong is such an idol 😤
too cool to see him at the end there.
the richest figure in vaporwave!
WINNER'S CIRCLE
Can't wait to watch this one during a comfy weekend night
:) that's the best way to do it!
This album I'm making during this first week of quarantine is heavily inspired by Derelict Megatower.
I was initially lukewarm towards vaporwave as a whole because most of what I'd heard up to now sounded off. It would either be tryhard or pretentious. It would try to invoke the feeling of nostalgia but use nothing specific. It was liking looking at a painting trying to remind you of your favorite childhood videogame, rather than looking at a painting using actual scenes and characters from that game. This album however is what I consider vaporwave done correctly. The production quality is top notch, and it used several unexpected samples pulled directly from my childhood which totally caught me off-guard. From here on out, I think anything I listen to in the genre will be directly compared to this project, nostalgia wise. A big part of the genre is invoking nostalgia, so it has to be exceptional at it.
So for the NUWRLD Mixtape Club that death's dynamic shroud started back in 2020, James has been putting out serialized installments of ENDLESSメガタワー the sequel to DERELICTメガタワー. Most tracks are built around samples from the same sources as the tracks on DERELICT, but with more complex editing and manipulation. The demo that is played starting at 8:12 even got remade into a new track called LABYRINTH MINOTAUR on ENDLESSメガタワー III. If you like this album, you should totally consider joining the mixtape club so you can listen to the amazing sequel albums as they come out!!!!!!
The ENDLESS MEGATOWER series deserves so much more attention.
Damn bro aight, I asked for the good stuff and you didn't disappoint! *A fucken 4 hour long album both in mockery and in homage to vaporwave* ... that's fucken surreal.
*Call me Kirito cause I'm about to scale 100 floors*
MY FELLA GOOD LUCK ON THAT JOURNEY LET ME KNOW HOW IT GOES
It's probably my favorite album that I never finished listening to, but I'm sure I will eventually, and after that I will feel that weird kind of emptiness similar to whenever I finish watching a long running show or beat a JRPG.
That's something I typically never get to experience with music.
What's your favorite song from the bunch?
@@MTHU0080 It's very hard to pick just one, but I think I'd go with NEONアーキテクチャ (パート1). That one and INTERNATIONAL TEAM (of course) are the main reason why I always start from the beginning, whenever I listen to DERELICT.
They've become like close friends to me that I always have to revisit before I start my journey into the uncharted territory that are the later sections of the album.
So it's officially called Derelict Superstructure? Damn Megatower had a better ring to it :/
no matter what dat tower lookin thicc
dds.wmv is a warm comfort but also a cold sadness absolutly unique.
Fuckin hell, I love your videos pad. As an avid vaporwave fan, this channel is a goldmine for me.
After being a fan of this album for quite some time it is so nice to watch this video. Thank you for this! #bestalbumsever
You can see your production quality going up video by video. Keep it up bro.
Best cascets to start a good music collection

9:05 my man referenced MST3k, a true man of culture
I still have yet to listen to the entire thing 😂
lmao me too, which is funny considering I've listened to it so often.
g o o d l u c k
My experience with the megatower was intense, I imagined myself climbing the tower and for each track I screen shot it and send it to my friend with like paragraph of what’s happening to me as I climb the tower and I essentially just wrote a short story with my own lore based on how each song made me feel, I did it in one sitting and I’m very taken back by how impressed I am with my experience
Mf Sofa King same man. as i listened, i wrote a 4.5 thousand word story, letting my imagination be guided by the music. i'm glad i'm not the only one who did something like this
edit: if you'd like to chat about your interpretation of the album on discord, my @ is shiverburn#7311
I enjoy watching these videos, despite the fact that I feel dumb and unknowing whenever I do.
Please do the definitive video breaking down the transition of chillwave into vaporwave
I made a short essay about music evolution and included only a short bit about vaporwave, me commenting right now is because i regret for not knowing this yesterday.
Goddamit youtube recommendations!
I would definitely listen to his in one sitting with my eyes shut.
A friend of mine who was very deep into the vapor scene said that there was going to be a tie-in novel for this. No joke.
Because of this video, me and a good friend just took the journey of this album together. During listening I put myself in the shoes of the “international team” and jotted down what each floor of the building felt like when I heard it. I’m gonna make a video about it. 😍
Hey, are you aware of this 'sovietwave' stuff on YT that's been popping up recently? Will you do a video maybe?
woahh man I've heard bits of DDS but I never knew all this stuff about them... cool!
