This is really interesting because it reminds me of the Library Music genre back in the 60s and 70s. Labels lile Bruton Music had some amazing releases and it was all music that was meant for soundtracking tv shows amd such. Brian Bennett's Voyage album is a fantastic electronic journey.

i feel like whenever there's a new sound in vaporwave it's always a debate of "does this really count as vaporwave?" and it's like. who cares y'know LOL. a lot of vaporwave really is just theft and can you change what you stole enough to consider it yours. and i don't think we'll ever really have an answer for that! like even as an artist myself (as in drawing, not as in music) there's always been contention in use of references and assets and what counts as inspiration vs tracing vs whatever else. and while they are conversations that need to be have, you will never really come to an answer that makes everyone happy. just how humans are, really. personally, as a barber beats but more specifically modest by default and macroblank enjoyer, i wish people would go more the route that modest by default does. mbd lists all samples used on their bandcamp, and offers all tracks they create for free via both yandex-360 and bandcamp and only charges money for merch/physical releases (or if you wanna personally throw them some dollars via bandcamp). to me this is probably the most ethical way you can do things in a genre that is, again, practically reliant on theft unless you insist on going sampleless (which no shade to ppl who do that btw, plenty of great vaporwave out there made w 0 samples). regardless, i think barber beats is a perfectly valid subgenre of vaporwave. it's just a question of whether or not all actors within said subgenre are creating/compiling with the same level of decorum re: other (perhaps actual) artists. and i would say no, they aren't, but it's simply not a problem i'd ever be able (or even willing) to fix by myself.

I found Windows 96's 100 mornings and nostalgia flooded into my brain. I didnt dive into vaporwave deeply, but the 80s/90s retro album covers, the subject matter, and it's refreshingly chill atmosphere is what drew me to it. However, my first thought, on the 1st track of 100 mornings made me think of the zombie apocalypse and Dawn of the Dead, foggy landscapes in the fields and forests, creeks cobered by mist as the walking dead mill about and I am the last survivor...or at least I Think I am...

I personally love it and am hooked ever since the mighty algorithm dropped the first video in my recommendations 2 years ago! Favorite [albums]Lost in Space by Slower Space and GUILLOTINE by modest by default ! I listen to it when making art, at the office or sometimes even before sleeping. ❤

In my opinion I think Barber beats is like the Birthday song. The Birthday song is actually copyrighted but we sing it regardless because it has an aspect that matters to us. So long as it's just used for enjoyment and exploration of soundscapes I think it's a good genre, I think what I'd love to see in the genre is for the people putting together these mixes to state who made each track in their mix specifically, and to make sure every penny accrued from viewership goes directly to the artists who made them. Obviously that's an idealized version of what it could be but ideals are good I think. As of right now, I think that if you're gonna listen to barber beats I'd suggest just downloading it, and if you are going to buy music, buy from someone whose art was featured in your favorite barber beats mixes. I think that as a community we should also be putting more emphasis on original created works as well, the mixtape versions are great but I think that original works should be at the top of the list. It would make the genre into something that actively supports the creation of new music and the blossoming couriers of new artists. That's my take at least tho

Late to the party but one of my favourites is the Slowerpace project called Pyromaniacs. It's completely cyberpunk-based with the idea of being like a OST for a Shadowrun game. Fantastic all around, with the best song being to me, Counterattack.

Its structurally similar to vaporwave, so im into it.

If there were bands making fresher examples of any genre, i'd buy the merch. Nobody is making the stuff, so the demand will be filled. I love kenny G, Michael MacDonald, all those blue-eyed soul stuff, and Sade wrote some of the sexiest music ever penned by anyone.

I think it’s ok to sell these mixtapes because even though it could be just copy pasted songs the curing and making of a cohesive list of songs that can transmit a certain feeling is legit hardwork. The only requirement would be transparency in disclosing wether or not the songs are produced by them or not.
