- Today, you and I are going to explore a now abandoned genre once known as “Ocean Grunge”, what it was and some of the notable releases from this aquatically angsty genre found within the depths of the internet.

Pad Chennington the most mysterious song on the internet?
Maybe a dabble in "lowercase music"? or maybe nintendocore/chiptune
oooo I think all those would work... any good examples of lowercase music? don't know too much about the genre but sounds interesting lol
@@PadChennington I recommend watching this video by 'This Exists' : "czcams.com/video/CIZDFRgJnHo/video.html"
and this playlist: "czcams.com/play/PLDgz_mnzmc11v4uLOXGQwzoefC5sDTAFY.html"

The best way to describe lowercase music is how simple *everyday sounds* can *become songs.*

What if people made some Ocean Grunge after this video.... Jk..... Unless?? 👀
Some people still do, I occasionally go on r/oceangrunge, and it's slow, but new things do come out every now and then.
@@alexandriaorcld6365 yeah, makes sense, all internet music genres don't want to 'die' so people will always try and 'revive' them if they CAN 'revive' them they will be known as the one who 'revived' it and everyone wants to be popular even in a small environment
@@suncityranger1115 It's also just so easy to keep the genre going, since a lot of it is sample based. People keep making it because it's not hard to do, and they like doing it.

Once again it’s proven that there’s always another genre.
More like subgenre
Ocean Grunge: * is forgotten *
Pad Chennington: * uploads *
“Extinct music genre re-evolves itself back into existence”
This subgenre was one of my favorites, Sea of Dogs actually has some really good albums like "Storm Memories" but yeah, At this point the Oceangrunge genre is lost in the vast and endless deeps of the bandcamp ocean.
Albums mentioned in video:
1. oceanographer #15 - gorgeous gorgias
2. ~~~Devour~~~ - Pacific Despair
3. Beneath the burning hands of God - POSEIDON IN CHAINS
4. as the earth drinks - metsu
5. through the fog and the driftwood - sea of dogs
02:37 _"How many songs could have possibly been made about the same thing?"_ I wonder how many songs there are about love? 🤔😙
Found the comment I was looking for 👍
I was going to say, theres actually an infinite number of interpretations based on an aesthetic.
Great point
Love is endless, unlike the imagination of "microgenre" Internet artists.
Yeah, but there's a big amount of lyrics about live that don't say anything new, use the same punchline and overall talk about love like everyone else
NEXT GENRE: dream thrash/metalgaze
This exists. Listen to deafhaven
yessss
Post metal is pretty much metalgaze tbh
Thrash metal!! METALLICA😈😈👊💀
"Metalgaze" is mostly blackgaze
there's no consumerism in the ocean :((

I came here to discover a new genre and ended up knowing the name of my phobia.

The more you know...
Same.
I have no idea what genre it is, but the artist Lorn has always been incredibly inspiring to me.
SAME. His style is super unique. Like he can take a handful of heavy vox and synth and make it sound somehow organic
Fuck yes! It's melancholy and overbearing never been able to find another artist that reminds me
guys let's go swimming

@@PadChennington pshhh dude, we swimmin' in the sea of grunge. hopefully some of your hot girl fans are comin'.
oit maite we're fucking drowning
I believe Deathklock recorded an album at the bottom of the ocean pre 2014.
I’m both terrified and completely in awe of large bodies of deep water. I want to explore it and know it’s secrets.....then at the same time it’s an all consuming monster that would crush me, suffocate me, leave me exposed to who knows what might be lurking in the darkness. I’d love my body to be buried at sea as this would probably be as close as I’m ever willingly going to get.
Bro we need to get like a super powerful camera or somethin to try and capture things.
I still listen to ocean grunge ò_ó
OCEAN GRUNGE IS NOT DEAD
Dude I miss ocean grunge. The aesthetic is prime but the subreddit has been dead for months
So glad to see Sea of Dogs on the list. Hope it gets a little more exposure, it made a nice impression.
would like to see a vid on witch house
that's a big one I always get requests for too! any album examples you'd recommend?
Pad Chennington Not albums but artists, but I have generally heard good things about Mono Yes Aware and Mourning Star from people who are into the style. And no, I am not typing out those symbols, my lord. There are also edge cases like Pictureplane who are quite interesting.
@@PadChennington oOoOO's 2010 s/t, Salem's King Night, and Balam Acab's See Birds are some early witch house essentials and my most listened to releases from that time. Definitely a good place to start.
Hey Pad, I’d recommend checking check out Sidewalks and Skeletons too, if you’re curious about scoping out Witch House/witch house inspired music
@@PadChennington White Ring's Black Earth That Made Me and Ritualz untitled 2010 album (sometimes called "CDR") are pretty essential too I think
Why can't nightcore be an abandoned genre
lmao
Nightcore is only good for memes. Like the Nightcore version of Rap God.
Nightcore? Do you mean ᴺᶦᵍʰᵗᶜᵒʳᵉ?
KiwiComics Because if nightcore weren't invented, someone would have to invent it solely to speed up Dream Theater to make them tolerable, or "The Most Unwanted Song" to make it even more The Peak Of Human Achievement than it already is.
Nightcore does not justify being a musical genre and should not be treated as such. It's just sped up songs.
Ocean Grunge is what Zeus the Guitar Lord from SpongeBob plays
"as the earth drinks" is such a good name for an album
Ocean Grunge is cool but I like my music to be a little heavier, like Deep Space Metal
I remember Wosx talking about this on his brief history of vaporwave video. Thanks for diving into this genre even more.
Sea Punk?
Davon Stephens bring it back
I didn't know I needed this genre. Thanks for being the true vaporwave valedictorian, keep up the great work!
Pad: The Abandoned Genre Of "Ocean Grunge"

I think I heard an old interview with Sea Of Dogs, saying that it was basically a meme with another friend of his, and it just took off randomly, hence the "influence of nu metal" 😂
Great video, Pad!
Oh god Pad I’m back in a coma

HOW
You're one of my favorite youtube channels now. I hope you cover more musical microgenres like seapunk, chillwave, etc.
Oceangrunge is an example of how when you can have too many limits and barriers, it can stifle the creative output. It's also a demonstration of how ridiculous style fixation can be (and yes, vapour is famous for making fun of it just by making a slew of different tags). But at the same time, one can also take it as a springboard to get into something else. After all, once you know "what the rules are", it gives you a certain licence to break them. And finally, this makes my own case for defining vapour the way I do: art/music built on mood and made with a DIY and DGAF attitude.
I did pick up a copy of metsu's as the earth drinks. Having just listened to this, I would call this a sludgy/metal Explosions in the Sky. It also reminds me a bit of Isis. Hell, their 2002 album Oceanic and 2004 album Panopticon could be "proto-oceangrunge" =D. It also is a reminder of how ... particular metal can be (and in a way, this is the precedent for vapour making their own genre/style tag list). And finally, while it is not vapour in the obvious ways, I would say being included in the oceangrunge essentials would qualify it as such. I know this gets into the issue of community designation and such. But again, I think what's great about the scene is how open it is.
COnsidering I've spent weeks listening to Eurobeat this is quite the change of pace
Yep, I feel ya. Gotta chill out with some slower tunes sometimes
Thank you so much for talking about ocean grunge, it is one of my favorite genres of music and it makes me so sad that it's dead
I loved ocean grunge back in the day. Thanks for this video pad I really miss this genre.
5:38 I appreciate that you didn't feel the need to put emphasis on that pun
Really great channel dude!
Ayyyy thanks Annie!!!
You know I've been into surf rock lately. Like Phycadelic 60's stuff like The Surfettes
Same. It's delicious.
Listen to a band called Langhorn
listen to Im in your mind fuzz by King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard
Listen to Sea Fuzz, they do Surf Rock oceangrunge.
Anything by Dick Dale, really, that's my best recommendation. Good stuff!
Try a band called Psychedelic Porn Crumpets
I started watching your videos recently! I like them very much. One thing I noticed you kept saying in this particular video is that the thematic of the genre is too small to keep it growing... When someone have creativity, there is no such thing as "small" or "limited" theme. That's exactly what creativity is meant to be, to transform, to create something new! Maybe the people interested in this genre couldn't produce content like this Sea of Dogs (appareantly, because I didn't listen to it to have an opinion). I'll give this genre a try! Thank you!
First thing I wake up to is a new Pad video, gonna be a great day! ❤️
I feel like Ocean Grunge is the exact opposite of something like A1 from Chuck Person’s Eccojams. A1 embodies a much brighter ocean feel than any Ocean Grunge song however.
Sadly, I can’t find any songs besides A1 that encapsulates the same feeling. I’m almost dedicated enough to making it happen that I’m thinking about making an album myself
Somewhere Pearl Jam's Oceans is what's playing at the gate entrance of Ocean Grunge
Thanks for inspiring me Pad! Subbed and all sorts!
thanks Vincent! WELCOME TO THE FAMILY!
Lol I made one of the 5 albums featured here, finished it in like 2 days after the thread where someone jokingly came up with concept. My main intention was to get it immortalized in the "essentials" chart I knew someone was going to make.
It has some nice stuff in there but too bad I sucked at mixing back then.
This was a really great video. I never listened to much ocean grunge, but a few people have compared my music to it so it's interesting to reverse engineer that comparison, though they're thematically very different.
thanks for watching dude! got any links to your music?
@@PadChennington would love to know what you think about this one, probably my best release so far boguscollective.bandcamp.com/album/it-pours
He said "no pun intended" one time and then never stopped doing "dive", "surface", "deep", "wave" puns lol. Nice video.
lmaoo thank you Paulo!
i guess you could say this style "dried up". interesting concept none the less. always been a fan of water levels in video games, so id like to think this will entertain that nostalgia factor of isolation and remoteness.
I love this idea cause I’m actually scared of the ocean atleast to be in it so this seems interesting great vid 😌
I saw this video about a month ago and I have to thank you for introducing me to see of dogs. And I actually was able to find a copy of the 1st press of the cassette in some random store inventory online. And I started on doing my own ocean grunge and probably be dropping it in a month.
Oceangrunge was basically this.
At 2010 witchouse beecome very famous between people that use internet to search about music.
At 2011 this happened with seapunk.
At 2012 vaporwave....
After it people usually tried to create some genre and make it big, making it the genre of the year or whateaver...
Some guy without imagination at 4chan, did with it with oceangrunge, he created some albums and kept shilling his idea there. I said he has no imagination, because basically got seapunk, changed the name sea to ocean and changed punk to grunge, the thing is, he dont even know that the punk from seapunk is problably related not to punk rock genre, but for stuff like steampunk, dieselpunk, decopunk, (insert something here) punk.
Almost everyone new it was just one or two guys trying to mage it big and almost no one joined the idea and tried to help them.
Hey, a genre and a few artists I actually listened to when it was alive! Didnt even know what vaporwave was when I first discovered Sea of Dogs
*OOOCEAN MAN TAKE ME BY THE HAND*
Hey, this video is excellent! Did watch the FrankJavCee video on Ocean Grunge earilier. Never got too deep into the genre though. Anyway, you should talk about Nuworld or Witch House. Definitely would like to hear about these genres.
"once existed" ? "Now abandoned" ? Triggered!!!!
You should do a video linking rap like yung leans early work and vaporwave
Up!
Agreed
Yung Lean & Sadboys, Bladee & Drain Gang, Bones & Seshollowaterboyz, Oliver Francis, Fijimacintosh, 6 Dogs, early Global Dan. They all give off vaporwave vibes to me and sometimes implement the sound in their music. Lean and Bones/Xavier Wulf/Chris Travis all were super influential on the vaporwave scene in around 2012-2014. They brought in the bucket hats, Arizona Tea, and Fiji water that vaporwave adopted. I listen to cloud rap as much as vaporwave honestly.
I still revisit Sea of Dogs time to time, love the atmosphere and universe it creates. It got me through 2020
I just stumbled upon this while looking thru sum 1's music playlist and I'm terrified with what I was looking at, I had to pause. I get intense anxiety and my stomach gets upset thinking about it.
Also I listened to as the earth drinks by metsu and it's literally just a sludge metal album xD
Tbh, "Pacific Despair" would make a really cool band name!
The Melon brought me here and I am loving your content
ayyy! that's awesome, thanks so much! happy to have ya here :)

The mighty classic pad is back.
Would the underwater levels of donkey Kong country 3 count as ocean grunge? I never heard of the genre but when I think of the ocean and something dark and grungy but also relaxing, I think of that stage. It has a very creepy but relaxing vibe.
I think it can maybe refer to the water levels from the GBA port of the same game
Im going to go make some oceangrunge now!
Very inspiring
I'm so glad I'm not the only one who knows this genre! I originally discovered it from Frankjavee.

I actually like this genre.
I want all these album covers hanged up and framed somewhere.
Zhutchka is really good, for those of you who are interested in this genre. It sounds like it was original music, and stands apart from ocean grunge as its own thing, similar to as the earth drinks
can you check out the artists: Staring at Screens, sweat shop lsd, and other Trevor Something projects? thanks Pad, great video
First i saw the "welcome to hell" documentary about Memphis Rap and now I've learned about this and doomer music man I'm getting to old to be learning stuff like this good video man

I don't know if there is that much content, but I would be glad if you could make a video on Climatewave... It's a micro genre that I really enjoy, and I'm not sure if that much people know about it!
Anyways, great video as always!

Gorgeous Gorgias takes the cake in this genre! Oceanographer 15 is a fantastic album!
That Sea Of Dogs album is named as the opposite of Through The Fire and the Flames.
Hey since Junkmaker Sounds is shitting down soon I think a video retrospective of it would be great! Since I can’t think of any vaporwave tape label that has such a variety of sounds on it!
Baths' Ocean Death EP could possibly fit this mood
How to create a new genre: Fill in the blanks
1._________ (Water related noun)
2. ________ (existing genre)
3. Choose wether or not to leave them separate, or to create a portmanteau.
Ex: Ocean Grunge, Sea Punk, Vaporwave (double points since wave is water related too).
Future predictions: Fjord Pop, Deep Sea House, Creek Country, Glacier Rap
Storm Memories is a amazing album!
So is weak waves even though its just an ep
"Granite-colored water" is a great visual 👍
Check out cocoon by veils, its basically Ocean House

Huh that’s strange I thought ocean grunge was alive. I remember coping a few ocean grunge albums on bizcaz
I think urusala cartridges was one such artist pad
It's alive in the sense that it is still being made, but the scene is way smaller now.
Ochre and Charcoal ah
Ochre and Charcoal I thought it was quite active haha! And big honestly.
The "brick wall" in oceanographer 15 is a talisman from the worlds most ancient divination text, i ching.
The digital version of that Poseidon in chains albums is listed at $100,000 on Bandcamp now lmao
None of these hold a candle to “One of Our Submarines”.
It was written based on an actual military tragedy that killed his Uncle when #ThomasDolby was a child, and the dry, dismissive reporting of it by the British press. HAUNTING.
I first appreciated it’s haunting nature when it was used for an unsettling scene in the fairly recent, excellent horror movie “House of the Devil”.
His manipulation of groundbreaking new synth instruments and disturbing lyrics perfectly captures the bleakness and enormity of the unfeeling, unrelenting ocean.
Lyrics:
(*Lyric Notes-
The “Winter Boys” denotes the crew shift change in the submarine.
Also, I almost drowned as a kid, and “drinking water from a stone” is the PERFECT description of it!).
One of our submarines is missing tonight
Seems she ran aground on manoeuvres
One of our submarines
A hungry heart
To regulate their breathing
One more night
The Winter Boys are freezing in their spam tin
The Baltic moon
Along the northern seaboard
And down below
The Winter Boys are waiting for the storm
Bye-bye empire, empire bye-bye
Shallow water - channel and tide
And I can trace my history
Down one generation to my home
In one of our submarines
One of our submarines
The red lights flicker, sonar weak
Air valves hissing open
Half her pressure blown away
Flounder in the ocean
See the Winter Boys
Drinking heavy water from a stone
Bye-bye empire, empire bye-bye
Shallow water - channel and tide
Bye-bye empire, empire bye-bye
Tired illusion drown in the night
And I can trace my history
Down one generation to my home
In one of our submarines
One of our submarines
One of our submarines
