- ✨ FULL TECHNIQUE INCLUDING FORMULAS ✨
I wanted to share my technique for doing a balayage on dark hair. In this video, I use my signature foilayage technique and it allows me to get a TON of lift so that I don't have to cover brassiness in the hair. I'm able to get my clients to a beautiful caramel color without it fading brassy.

What was toner. Beautiful work
So gorgeous!!!I work with mostly Hispanic level 2-4 hair DAILY. Your balayage technique has changed my hair game COMPLETELY! And I’m forever grateful. More than you could know!!!!
If I could offer some helpful advice, closing BOTH sides of the foils instead of just folding the bottom corner on darker clients will help you so much. It incapsulates the heat better and allows for a much better lift. I also don’t believe in putting clients under the drier for a quicker lift. So instead... I always insure to fold the bottom horizontally then fold the sides vertically. I can guarantee a better lift with that.
So happy we can always help each other!!!
Thanks so much!
100% agree. You need that extra incubation for a better lift.
Thats so nice what a sweet comment and I work with native american long hair mostly and also a level 1 to 2 and they wanna go golden and caramel tones so thank u for your tips as well
just want to thank you so much for your videos...i don't think people realize how much work it takes to do videos on youtube, sharing info for FREE, editing, most likely your models don't pay for the service...i appreciate you so much !
Thank you so much! I'm so happy to hear it's been helpful!
it looks beautiful although j see the conditioner diluted the lighter to process and the top of the balayage is orange ..
Why is watching you fold those so perfectly is so satisfying..😆 Her hair looks so pretty.
Thank you for showing a technique for asian hair. I have asian hair and I had a stylist tell me Balayage is for blondes and that she didn't like using Olaplex. Needless to say, I stopped going to her.
Thanks so much for watching!
I have asian hair... and my stylist just did my hair balayage. She probably doesn't want to do your hair. Go and find a new stylist who will do your hair when you wanna get done.
She was a lazy stylist.
Anyone who behaves like that, just don't go, cuz from my experience, ppl who are not nice to you will no wayyyyyyyy in hell properly do your hair.
She probably isnt confident to do dark asian hair. Possibly intimidated because dark asian hair isnt easy to lighten. (but it can be done obviously) it takes skill and special know-how to work on that hair type. Feel grateful that she told you upfront instead of doing a bad job and taking your money. Just find someone who has experience with ethnic dark hair with evidence in their portfolio. As a stylist i can tell you working on caucasian hair vs. Ethnic hair is different, some stylist are not up for the task.
I just started cosmetology a few months ago so I’m still learning about cuts and color but your videos are so helpful!!!
Beautiful thank you for all your videos they have been upping my game , after over 30 years in the business love that we have people like you out there to help keep us up to the new stuff.
Thanks so much Connie! I'm so happy to hear these have been helpful!
hair look beautiful . i would recommend thinner section and paint closer to the root and using toner to color melt the top for perfect transition .for more graduated look
I had anxiety watching her grab so much hair lol smaller sections would’ve made a huge difference!
I've watched all your foilayge videos repeatedly and I couldn't completely wrap my head around the technique at first. I tried it and it was ehh but after some time I've gone back and watched some more and it clicked! I did it on a client and it was SOOOOO GORGEOUS I was highly impressed on the turn out, thank you so much for sharing this technique! I'm hooked on framar foils, brushes, and the acidic milk rinse from biolage
That really looks great! You did an amazing job on her hair. I'm a Hairdresser and I would have been scared to death to Balayage her hair! Thank you for the technique! Keep up the good work and the sharing!!!
Thanks so much Marie! I really appreciate it!
Really beautiful, but a root shadow or mids toner would help tremendously with the red/orange spots where the lightener and conditioner meet.
Rachelle Finseth i agree!
Agree
Agreed.
I agree to. The ends are beautiful but transition is still to much warm
I totally understand what you are saying, there will always be a little bit of warmth in the transition from dark to blonde pieces even without this conditioner method. But unfortunately, the footage makes those pieces look more brassy than how it looked in real life. If it was that orangey in real life, I wouldn't have let my client walk out and I would have absolutely done a dark toner to counteract the warmth. Thanks for watching my video!
This is so beautiful!! The best foilayage for dark hair tutorial I’ve seen so far 😍

I’m getting balayage done in 2 weeks. So excited! My hair is virgin but it’s sooooo dark, so also nervous lol.
So I am not a cosmetologist, nor have I EVER dyed my hair because I am south asian and have dark hair too. (I just always thought I couldn't dye my hair.) But I am going to finally dye my hair this week and I found this video very helpful in understanding what to ideally expect! Thanks so much for sharing!
That makes me so happy to hear. Thanks so much for watching!
Love it, my grandma has a very similar hair type so this is perfect for that. Thank you💘

Thanks Eddie!
I did this on my sister. It looks so good.
Your videos are the BEST!! 😍 you’re a hair god
Aw you're so sweet. Thanks so much for watching!
I love watching your videos! I wish I could become a client of yours!! Quarantine made me do some crazy things. I had the most beautiful long blonde balayage that took me about 4 sessions to achieve! My hair was not damaged either since I did invest on going to a professional who specializes in balayage! Mostly because I had been dying my hair black for years is why it took so many sessions. But recently I had an itch to chop my hair just a little bit past my shoulders and dye it to a really dark brown almost black(I did not use box dye just to clarify!). Now I’m regretting it! So I haven’t dyed it anymore and it is beginning to fade to a brown. When the salons open again and it’s safe to go back I’m definitely going back to my girl to start the process over again. I feel like she’s low key going to be mad 😂
Omg so beautiful technique I have black dye on my hair and my natural hair is really dark brown black I wish one the day I could have done my hair like this!! 😍
I'm thrilled to hear you loved this. Thanks so much for watching!

@@helenboyd9327 I am pretty sure she adds in a gold to her tonor blend .? Just watch alot of her videos have a N and A G mixed in a small ratio to the V ... hth

Good job! Beautiful blend!
Thanks Taylor!
Wow such a good teacher i learned a lot in this video!
Thanks so much Ashley! I'm glad to hear it was helpful!
Yassss. I really enjoy your work as a new stylist I can really see your amazing work. But I am always afraid of the brasiness area where the lightener meest the base color is always stubborn to the toners. Why I know we are trying to save the root shadow. Placement is just amazing
Thank you so much for watching!
Your work is beautiful 😊❤️
Beautiful. would you be able to do another video adding how you mix the toner please and retouch if its possible and list the items you used on the bottom of the video? You're videos are amazing!!!
I'll keep that in mind for a future video! Thank you for watching.

Thanks Steffany!
I love it ♡
Thank you Michelle!
Beautiful Jamie
Thank you!
Ahh I used this technique for the first time today ! I was nervous at first but it came out better than I thought ! Thank you so much I also have a question I ended up doing a lot of sections not sure if that’s expected sometimes or less is better?
It totally depends on how thick your sections are and how much you want to brighten!
Jamie your video as are sheer perfection! The music in the background is distracting, sorry. You are perfect without music, we want to hear what you have to say. Thanks so much!! Hugs from a fan in San Diego
Thank you! I'll keep that in mind for future videos!
I love it❤
Beautiful job of toning!! Maybe calling it baby-lage!!
Love warmth, I’m tired of ash!!
Hey, you are soooo pretty! 😍
You make it all look so easy! & beautiful
Wondering do you tease any of the side sections or just use thinner on every section?
Thank you so much for this video 😍
Thanks so much for watching! Most of the time I do not tease the sides if I want it really bright around their face, otherwise I will.
Thank you for showing a technique, in this video,I will like to see the formula colors, step by step, if you can please,
Hey Sandra. I do share my step by step formulas in my videos and the rest of my color videos, but I'll keep in your suggestion in mind to show them a little better. Thanks for watching :)
Love this technique but I feel like she didn’t get enough lift where you applied conditioner. It’s beautiful, great job!
Thanks for the feedback. Thanks for watching!
I love your videos and have learned so many new techniques. With this one did you tease any hair in the front area?
Hi Jamie, love your videos! You explain the steps so well. Were the sides teased at all or only weaved?
Thank you!
sides not teased only weaved
Super pretty!!
Beautiful
Please make more tutorials on Asian hair.Thank you!
I'll keep that in mind for future videos! Thanks for watching.
Thank you!
Wow i love it
Thank you Mari!
Love all u r videos.
I love your technique on blonde hair I’ve tried it on NL 2-4 and it’s unfortunately too brazzy on the transition and it bugs me 🙈 but it works beautifully on blondes 👍
Thanks so much!
Thank you for all your knowledge and dedication to your videos. I love your videos so much. Wish I could have met you when you were in Hawaii. Please keep doing your videos you’re the best
Aloha, Ashlee! Which island are you on? I’m looking for someone who loves working on dark hair on Maui. I love my stylist’s cuts but her true talent in color is blondes.
Thanks so much for watching!
Hi sorry I’m on Oahu. If you’re ever on Oahu I could though!
Lol I was trying to message you but idk how on here, but you can follow me on Ig and if you’re ever on Oahu call us 🥰 @ashleeayakoartistry
@@ashleebby12 You never know! Ty!!
I love it, Question to you though, what if client wants to go lighter on their base for a less dramatic contrast? Any tips on the quickest route to get best results?
I don't give out formula advice because so much of that depends on what you see in person. I would recommend brainstorming with other stylists in your salon! Thanks for watching.
