Our Entire Mast Has To Come Down Because Of This... (Episode 220)

  • We have an extended episode this week as we have so much to get through! First of all we have to remove the entire mast, which we do on our own without a rigger. Then we have to cut out the compression post and get a new one made. This all came about because we actually found a crack in our rigging a few days before we were meant to cross the Pacific Ocean. They say everything happens for a reason....
    SV Parlay is a hurricane damaged Lagoon 450 catamaran, which Colin rebuilt with friends and has started sailing around the world. We found bulkhead damage on their catamaran in Panama, so have fixed her up, and are almost ready to cross the Pacific Ocean!!

    There is an old mechanic's trick with seized bolts ....... apply heat like you did then rub candle wax on heated fitting/thread, apply more heat. This strangley works better than penetrative oil or just heat alone.

    A while ago one of the sailing channels published a video of a factory tour of the factory that makes Leopard cats. I remember one of the leopard managers showing how the boat was built so that any maintenance could be done easily with inspection hatches and panels. Because most of the boats are for charter fleets, being able to quickly turn boats around for repairs increases availability for the fleet. Seems like Lagoon have done the opposite, no way to inspect a bulkhead without tearing apart a cabin. No way to access compression post without ripping out trim that with screws that can’t be accessed. Just seems crazy that such beautiful boats have such obvious design flaws.

I just hope with all the work you're putting in the Company takes notice and changes to a more friendly building scheme so that if rebuilds are needed the owners or those being paid to rebuild the boats have a easier time. Hell sometimes it's even Lagoon that has to so I don't see why not.

    For the mast step, we also had some leaking. Glad I caught it before my compression post looked like yours. It was caused by two things. The 4 step bolts weren’t properly sealed at the factory, so I took those out and sealed them with 3m 4000 uv. And the weep hole at the base of the mast was blocked by tiny natural debris coming in through the holes at the top of the mast. Probably from birds. I leave thick zip ties pointing up on all my wiring at the mast head, and they don’t land there. I also made some aluminum plates for the top of the mast to cover the holes, and made sure to clean the weep hole every time I washed the boat. No issues after that. Looks like your weep hole was blocked as the water got above the gooseneck part of the conduit inside the mast and then migrated between the conduit and the box beam/post. Nice work buddy. One other issue I had that you may want to check was leaking at the deck to hull joint by the chain plates mid ship. This only appeared after we unstepped. It separated when the rig tension was removed. Had to remove the toe rail to get to the bolts. They were way undersized, so added larger diameter bolts and resealed with 5200.

  • @samgentile7494
    @samgentile7494 Před rokem +3

    G'day Mate Colin, I told you long ago when the hull cracked that the shrouds were set way too tight. Please try hard to accept my advice this time and only tighten them enough to hold the mast straight up and centered when the sails are not up. When you have the sails up it is no big deal for the downwind side shrouds to have some slack in them. A little looseness is far, far, far better than over-tightening them.
    PS: Use some Never-seize on the unbuckle screws before you re-assemble it all. Too late now but removing the compression post was not necessary and a total waste of time and money. If you had any doubts about the compression post it would have been fa easier and far less cost and wok to place a 2 foot wide by 8 foot long piece of 3/8" thick stainless steel beneath the mast on the cabin top to spread the load out over a wide area. You could have also replaced the shrouds one at a time without taking down the mast. Another easier option was to leave the original compression post alone and add a new compression post onto each side of it to spread the load out more. Dill a weep hole in the compression post whee it meets the bottom plate to allow water a way to get out.

      sensible. I would have fabricated a new post and base in halves that fit over the original and TIG welded them together over the original, then use longer bolts and screws to secure in place. it will ve interesting to see what the new rigger does. funny how in the master and commander books aubrey is always changing the rake of the masts on his boats until he finds the fastest configuration.

    A a pair of dedicated open-end wrenches with a 5-foot snipe each would give you a much more controllable turnbuckle job, especially if you soaked all thread with Kroil overnight first and started the pull with wrenches 60 degrees apart. I use my nice (precision) crescent wrench only if I have a lot of climbing to do all over the plant that day. A strong open-end of the precise width is a better choice then a crescent - and you can build a lot more torque with it using a snipe.

    Great video folks!! Very interesting repair work. It's a simple thought, but would some penetrating oil on the various hardware have helped them break loose more easily?? I have seen the penetrating oil in combination with heat do wonderful things. Anything to break up the adhesion the threads have formed over the years. Maybe a little oil or grease when reinstalling would help for adjustments? Have a great week! 😀

    Water running down from top of mast is my bet. Last time I was at top of mast heaps if openings for water to get in and run down, fills base of mast then runs into the support. Good job guys.

      The water probably ends up on the cables in the mast, directing water into the conduit.

    Fuiture suggestions. My brother is a mechanic and I have done some old car restoration. One technique is to use 2 hammers. Hold one hammer on the side and wack with the other hammer. The will break the corrosion. Heat and cold cycles with maybe a wet rag. Or while hot spray with a penetrating fluid. Not WD40.

    Bending the accordion tube to prevent water ingress, might make it impossible to add or remove cables once the mast is reinstalled. Better put a cap at the top.

    Great job you guys and gals. It takes a great crew to pull that off. Your crew is great and not afraid to pitch in. Expensive it is, but you don't want to lose your mast in the middle of the Pacific in wind and high seas.

    you should drill a hole in the bottom of the new steel piece so if a leak develops in the future you'll be able to know there's a leak and also that any water that gets in to the post will drain out.
