Changing All Our Rigging A Week Before We Cross the Pacific!! - (Episode 221)

- We have an extended episode this week as Jonas Berg, one of the owners of Selden Masts flies down to Mexico to help us re-rig our lagoon 450 catamaran. The knowledge that this man shares is invaluable, and there is so much to learn from him, hence the longer video this week.
SV Parlay is a hurricane damaged Lagoon 450 catamaran, which Colin rebuilt with friends and has started sailing around the world. We found bulkhead damage on their catamaran in Panama, so have fixed her up, and are almost ready to cross the Pacific Ocean!!

Here is the documentary we made about SV Niniwahuni who lost their mast sailing from Mexico to French Polynesia…

Trick to prevent cable from corroding and failing ..... chain lube for dirt bikes soak into the cable and helps a ton . Rotary 2 post lift installer told me this for outdoor install of lift. Same would apply to your cables
You guys are an encyclopedia!
Thank you Jonas Berg for the rigging class. Thank you for helping the crew of Parlay Revival.
Awesome the details in rigging that @Jonas gave. Also the points that he was like wait, we will have comments here on no calking vs calking.
@Colin, we’re glad you haven’t blazed over this. Feck them MFs that want you to catch up to real time.
Mr. Berg, you're a legend.
Wow. What a privilege to get the master to teach all of us on rigging
Brands take note of Jonas here. Guy is rolling up his sleeves and getting dirty to show you his product and all that goes into it.This is better than 1,000 traditional magazine ads or other methods. Bravo.
I couldn't agree more! Talk about going above and beyond.
Maximum respect to Selden and Jonas Berg for helping out and guiding Parlay in the rigging their mast.
I’ve learned more about joining cable in this 30 minute video than anything I’ve ever done in my life. Master class on setting up standing rigging, thank you Parlay crew, than you Selden guy.
Massive cheers to Selden! You've no idea how incredible this expertise and knowledge make THE difference. Wow!!
Mr. Berg’s passion and excitement to help fellow sailors is why Seldon should be our first stop when we need new rig’s! Thanks for the great rigging class.
I have a feeling that this sponsorship should work out just great for Selden. Similar to how Precision Sails jumped on board with all of the sailing CZcamsrs.
That impact screw driver is worth its weight in gold. 😄Thanks for the update Colin.
Hit the thumbs up for Colin
We've used those impact screw removers in many applications. They are extremely useful.
I have found a lump Hammer 2.2 Lb has more control with tight screws and not bash your fingers..🙂@@Movieman1965
Absolutely! They are just a manual impact gun/wrench and work even better when you’re swinging a 3 lb. Engineer’s hammer.
If you don’t plan on using it very often, you can pick one up at Harbor Freight for about 10 bucks. It’s definitely worth it for the piece of mind. Especially, since corrosion from the ocean causes a lot of screws to become seized and need a little extra help getting unstuck.
Having Jonas there to firstly demonstrate and then supervise the tasks, must have been a massive stress reliever for Colin and the crew. As competent and willing as they all are, to have the GOAT there leading the way and teaching the crew as he went, was great. A fab episode Colin 👏🏼
What a freakin legend. Jonas is an incredible human and a great steward of the sailing community. Ok, now fast forward to South Pacific footage 😉
He absolutely is a legend! We're almost at the Pacific footage and it will be worth the wait 😉
Who wouldn’t buy Selden after that! What a decent and humble guy too.
Such an incredible blessing to have someone like Jonas come to you and lend his expertise on replacing your rigging while taking the time to teach you and the crew!!! Once in a lifetime experience for sure!!!
A free class in rigging assembly. That has got to be worth a pretty penny. As usual, the Parlay team was steaming along at full throttle. Nice job all of you. Now, let's get this girl in the water!
Having Jonas come down to do this was truly priceless! We're a very lucky team!
Isn’t Jonas just the man! Brilliant Brilliant. The power of community
Spot on! It's all about relationships and friendships :)
What a master class in the fine points of rig fittings and attachments. This episode should saved for all time by every owner or rigger. Thank you.
Thanks Robert! We appreciate that.
It's always great to see someone like Mr. Berg who knows what he's doing. Expertise is a wonderful trait to have on your side. You guys were lucky to have him at your disposal. Thanks for another great episode!
It's a blessing for you guys to have him. That kind of experience doesn't come around often..and he can explain it to all your viewers... he is a gem and u r too to get that lucky
There are people you meet that can do any job. And some that even know what there doing. But Jonas is one that you just know is a master at what he does. He immediately answered the one question I was having about waterproofing the swage fittings. Thanks for letting us be apart of this experience.
You cannot find a better crew, the XP from all 8 people so satisfying to watch. You guys are going to have a super save crossing. Happy to watch it all
Great rigging video Colin. Hats off to Sheldon Mast for helping you and educating us fellow sailors 😊
Well thats the fastest 36mins I ever spent watching a Parlay video. Such a wealth of information, a testament to who Colin is that he can get such incredible teachers to help out.
No finer teacher and mentor than a master of the trade. Listening, learning and taking notes not only saves you time but a load of heartache as well. Great video with a lot of excellent tips.
Jonas ,what a wonderful ,person ,passing on his knowledge .
Hats off .
it's so much fun to see a master of their craft sharing the knowledge they're passionate about. Jonas looked like a kid in a candy shop!
He's truly amazing at what he does and he's such a pleasure to be around! We're so lucky to call him a friend.
I know nothing about sailing, but love this channel. I do know when you have loved ones, friends and mentors your life is filled with an incredible amount of joy. Watching everyone work and being mentored by the best lead me to conclude the work was made a great deal easier and may have reached the point of being fun. What a huge blessing. Enjoy your time together. God Bless!
How incredibly fortunate to have a co-owner from Selden to come down in person to help with the mast! I really appreciated the instructional part of installing the mechanical swedge. This was very informative!
Jamie is priceless !!! Love that guys dedication to Parlay as its his own sail boat . One of the greatest videos for a educational
So true Rick! Thanks for the kind comment and for following along! :)
Piece of mind having it professionally assembled...priceless..and worth every cent.
This guy was great to listen to. Experts are a joy to work with.
Absolutely agree!
Awesome video. I'm lucky enough to work with some electronic/RF engineers who have 35+ years experience, there's nothing better than watching people who have mastered their trade. No video, book or lecture will ever come close to what you can learn from watching them.
Well that was a true masterclass, you guys are lucky to have him.
Nothing like having an expert with a lifetime of experience to give you and all of us a masterclass, thank you Jonas and Colin.
The best part was "the chosen one, the savior and the second coming. Colin you have surrounded yourself with favor, fun and fancy. Well done lad. Very well done 👍
Hey Colin. Years I have been watching. This is one of the best episodes. Smart educated people talking and doing. Thank you.
Thank you for letting us look over your shoulders as you refit your rigging. This stuff is so interesting . . . and it warms my heart to see the extended crew working together so well. :-)
You can never get sick of listening to a master......
Great to see you getting such good rigging advice. I am an Aussie that works as a rigger in Oslo [ Norway ] I have toured the Selden factory in Gothenburg a few times. If you ever have the chance I would recommend it. Its absolutely amazing how much they are producing from such a small factory. Compliments to Jonas and have a safe trip across the pond.
Must be the best informative video ive seen. As a sailor for 35yrs , the knowledge gained in 36min was immense. Thanks Colin and Parlay Crew,
That's amazing, thanks for your support Gary!
This was an incredibly useful episode! We re-rigged this year and I wish I had seen this before that project. Gives me a lot of respect for our riggers.
Colin, I think this must be one of the most educational vids you ever showed. Very interesting to see Jonas at first hand, hearing his comments and guidelines. Priceless information !
The genius of bringing together the right group of informed professionals working as a team to accomplish a common goal is a joy to behold, even for non boaters who love the sea & respect all that is required to voyage like this. The shared spirit & soul is as unmistakable as it is a joy to witness! 💗🏆 The down time is delightful & the production values are fabulous! LOVE!
Thank you, Jonas, for your valuable leadership sharing your vast knowledge. Teach me, and I remember. Involve me, and I learn. 🎓
I have known about your channel for some time but only now I have been watching you. It is clear that this capacity that you have to motivate so many people is because of your character and charisma. You should have 10 times more subscribers; you deserve. I wish you all the best for the future!!!
Ps. Jamie is a legend!
Absolutely awesome video guys, I had to watch it several times so I could Google all of the parts and terms to get a better understanding of how it all fits together. The fact that it was also longer than normal was an added Bonus for sure!!! I think if you put together a one time "Pay-Per-View video, that didn't omit valuable, amazing stuff, that at least got us to the day you finally embark would be awesome. I know I for one would pay for that as I'm sure others would too. I would make it "Free" to fateful Patreons and $5 for everyone else, think of it like this you could then cut it up and use it as your weekly update for a month or more for those that don't pay to watch it and just follow it up with a video for those of us that paid to jump forward. I imagine it could pay for a few bar tabs 😂😂😂
The chosen one seems like a educated tradesman himself. Impact screw tool for the win
This guy is an absolute LEGEND!!!!!! In the automotive World, we deal with many parts that have loc-tite "RED" , that has to come out. The easy trick is to heat the nut, bolt, screw with a propane torch and unscrew it. The Loc-tite will turn to liquid again and the screw or bolt will come right out.. The factories love to use it on universal joint collar bolts.. Without heat, you can fight the bolts all the way out and even destroy them. Heat it up for a minute and it's like it's greased...... THIS was a great video!!!!
the guy is a legend. extremely knowledgeable and man were you guys lucky he cleared his schedule to help out. what a great guy a vast wealth of knowledge .
Very cool to see someone who knows masts and rigging like Jonas come down to help you guys!! Colin has great connections!!
So true! Good people attract good people :)
One of the most informative videos ever. I'm under contract on a 1980 Gulfstar 44CC that will need new wire on her 2011 Selden Spar and this episode was super encouraging that I can do this myself.
Bravo
*Wow I learned heaps on this episode. Thanks to Seldon's Jonas Berg for giving an informative tutorial instructions on rigging on how it should be done.*
Jamie has an angel on his shoulder. 👼
I just got a master class on rigging today, thank Jonas, and thanks Colin and the Parlay crew.
A class from the best in the business for sure!
Great episode - usually it is you imparting your knowledge Colin, so it makes a change to watch you learning from someone else who clearly knows his stuff and what a great guy to come down to help at the drop of a hat.
One of our favourite episodes, we love to learn!!
That was so interresting and what a teacher /coach Jonas is! Beautiful work by whole team! Thank you!! ❤
I love watching these. Even though I’ve never sailed. I feel I learn things.
Great video team - loved every second of it 🙂... I don't think I've seen a better example of the law of psychological reciprocity ... it's about giving to receive, helping to be helped, and appreciating to be appreciated. It's a reminder that doing good deeds for others will inspire them to do the same for you at some point. Colin - you put so much good into the world, it's always going to come back to you ... this time in the form of Jonas Berg!
Great comment Shaun! Parlay attracts incredible people and that is thanks to Colin!
Definitely getting a masterclass here. Kudos Selden. Love how the ladies kick in as well. Incredible "gees" here. Means team spirit.
I appreciate the Masterclass. Cheers to the Parlay team!! (NZ viewer. Palmy North)
Colin your success is the people around you…like a tree- the greater the root system the stronger the tree. Your roots are deep and you respect every one of them!
Best episode yet. Well done Selden.
To have a rigging manufactuer tune the cables AT sea? Priceless. What peace of mind you should have at that point... Well done gents and ladies.
Not one person speaking a word while watching his skills at the end. I love when a master shares his knowledge like this. Great vid. Thanks
When you listen to an expert talk about what they have experienced, you know you are getting sound advice. This is where CZcams shines. People that know sharing with those that don't.
What an incredible, humble guy Jonas was to come out and help you guys prior to your journey is a lucky break and a real good luck omen, at least now you won’t have to worry about rigging.
Jonas is such an incredible person! We feel super lucky to do business with him and to be able to call him a great friend.
Great to sit and learn. To see a skilled person at work, I love to see. Thank you
Briliant teamwork, great mastery and leadership.
Ack! Maintaining and repairing all the mast/rigging parts is BRRRUUUUTAL! Kudos to the crew and all others involved to "make it right".
Next level. I know your father is proud to watch this. This boat is looking bulletproof!
If you take a torch to the bolts heat them up it’ll break the loctite free and makes it way easier to remove, don’t go too hot you’ll tell smell the loctite when the bond goes
BIG props to Seldon!
Brilliant episode as new sailor understanding how the rigging is put together is invaluable. Thank you all.
It's so cool that friends are so eager to help spread the love and get you on your way, excellent y'all.
What a lovely man Jonas is. Thankyou Selden for supporting Parlay.
Jonas is such a lovely man indeed. We are so so grateful :)
I really appreciate the little cinematographic techniques used in your videos. Like putting the camera in the box and then opening it, as if the viewer were the new rigging equipment. It’s those little details that keep me coming back for more. Hats off, another amazing Sunday thanks to you’s hard work ❤
The only problem i have is i just wish your videos are much longer 🙏🤞
Awesome 👌 Super 🆒️ 👌 video and wonderful teamwork 💪🦾🏅🥇🏆💯
✌❤☘ 🌬⛵
This was an wonderful episode! Thank you everybody, including the "Maestro Of Selden", (sorta' sounds like someone from the middle ages) for putting this together.
Helluva technical but so interesting. Loved this episode
You are so fortunate to have friends of that caliber. Most sailors would sit out 'til the next season. Big ups ! Keep the killer content coming!
This has to be one of the best episodes you’ve put out Colin.
I really felt like I’ve just had an education in rigging…. Thanks!
Truly a great episode with so much knowledge being shared! Kudos to everyone involved. Can not wait for the next episode!
I feel like I just took a master class on rigging! What a great learning experience. Absolutely the best way to teach. Explain, Show, Do. Great teaching methodology. Cheer to Jonas and Seldan.
It is great to see all these legends of sailing or components thereof come and help Colin and Parlay. This goes to show if you are a great guy, then people will help you. To all off you crew of Parlay and everyone who is helping them, YOU ARE ALL LEGENDS ( as Colin and Jamie like to say) .
Next time use heat to loosen the loctite. Impact driver is also useful:)
Colleen is the best. She provides such Amazing support
ok - this is by far one of the best sailing related videos I've seen. Thank you.
Its always a pleasure to watch a pro at work.
In the Navy on valve covers of Stainless valves which were also stainless, we used Neolube (a mixture of alcohol and molybdenum disulfide. ) on stainless threads to prevent galling. It is a dry film lubricant.
This is a true lesson in rigging, and as I am a grandmother, I didn’t think I would be able to follow this. Thank goodness for Jonas Berg, as he explained everything so clearly, and the “why”. Colin and Jamie this is a lesson you will never forget. I can’t wait to see your mast in place, Parlay looks naked the way she is.
This was actually one of my favorite episodes, I love this geeking stuff!
What an amazing company Selden is holy crap, as soon as I saw how his personality was it wasn't hard to see how his company has gotten an amazing reputation. What a solid guy!!!
Great episode! Such passion and teamwork. Must be very rewarding to see things done so well, with attention to detail. This yacht is definitely becoming the best version of a Lagoon 450.
Super rewarding!
Hi guys , what a fascinating episode . Jonas !!! What a star , what an amazing instructor. I am a teacher and he explained so well , I feel that I could have deffo done some of those tasks from his instructions. I look forward to next weeks episode . Love to you all
Thanks Mary! He sure is a star. Sending love back to you :)
This episode was amazing. I watched Delos replace there rigging years ago in Thailand. I don't think they, well, I know they didn't show this level of detail which is amazing ! This will go in my Rigging Playlist.
This has been really enjoyable to watch the rigging refit. Thanks, Colin!
Awe man, I was engrossed, I didn't want this episode to end. I Looooove the hands on learning!
Thanks Matthew! Stay tuned for this coming Sunday's episode :)
@@KatieParlayRevival do you know when the bags from your old sails will be available?
It's nice to have friends that know their stuff. 😊
Great job Colin and team - with Jonas. Very impressive and important work.
