This is the story of SV Niniwahuni, a west sail 43, and the family who found themselves 950 nautical miles off the coast of Mexico, with NO MAST. Shawna and their 3 young children were rescued by a cargo ship, and taken to Hawaii, while Travis refused to let their boat sink without him. He had a long way to go back to Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, and it was about to be the craziest adventure of his entire life...
Big thanks to the crew in Puerto Vallarta, Mike, Dee Dee, Christian and Zac for giving their interviews. Also a big thanks to all of the people who sent in footage of the rescue including SV Sea Legacy, Craig, Dirk, Hanna, Caroline, Angela, Michelle, and Elaine, who all delivered diesel and food to Travis at sea.

Donated! What a bloody story….👍🇦🇺🇳🇿
52k so far. Just think, we'd all get a free boat if Colin did a sad doco fund raiser for all of us. Imagine all the rescues.
As the father of the skipper of SV Auryn, the first cruising boat to drop fuel and food, I feel compelled to add a few comments. My son and family, including our two grandsons, were on the same route to Nuku Hiva as Travis and family. They have been on their boat for over a year, down from SoCal to Mexico and then to French Polynesia and beyond. I have not lost a single night's sleep worrying about them; I don't worry about school mass shootings, or my grandsons exposed daily to rampant drug use.
A few here have decried taking a family to sea as reckless and not worth the risk. We ALL live with risk every day. Consider that we rarely think twice about driving 75 mph on the freeway with the baby strapped in the back; all the time subject to immediate disaster if another driver makes a mistake. Families continue to live in Tornado Alley with their small children. Families in the Northeast drive in minus zero temperatures with their children in the car. Even just staying home is a risk, as we here in the greater SF Bay area know by the ever present, and unannounced earthquake that could kill thousands in a minute.
Thank you for being such an amazing person for helping out. I hope that I could do the same for someone someday, and I also hope that if I’m ever in a similar position there will be others to help us.
Very well said and of course there is risk in everything we do but the rewards are what we celebrate!
Um... that logic doesn't fly.
Why does this logic not fly?
Are you a control freak?
living life is a risk in itself, If I were a young man with a family starting out I would do this in a heartbeat considering the state of the world these days this would be an amazing way to raise a family
This quality documentary is beyond anything on TV or from the big owned companies. And it's focused on the people who endured the tragedy. Colin, cheers mate! You're an amazing individual for showing these types of stories
What he/she said.. x
I agree....the funding of the repair could come from a documentary of this rescue & the sailing community who made it happen! True community spirit!
Completely agree
Completely agree. What a great story. Inspiring
agreed
This video completely encapsulates the boating community, they never fail to impress me with their willingness to help each other out no matter the circumstances.
Nobody on land would have helped them
The human race never ceases to amaze me. To quote one of my favorite lines of all time: "Humans are at their best when times are at it's worst." May God continue to bless not only this family but everyone involved with helping this amazing family.
That was a tear jerker. I have to say that little baby is soooo cute. What an epic story, I am glad he stayed with his boat and bought her back to port. Thanks for sharing this adventure/rescue/safe landing with us all. I hope they get more than enough donations to get their rig back up and continue their journey to the South Pacific. Safe and epic journey to you all.
In these incredibly negative times in world history it takes stories like this on to renew our faith in humanity.. God bless Travis and Shawna and their family and all those who bravely helped .. Thank you Colin for sharing their wonderfully beautiful story.
Courage under duress is indescribable. The courage to continue forward after a catastrophe is admirable. Camaraderie of mariners is heartwarming. This episode has so much in it to take in.
Staying on board wasn't courage, it was stupidity. You can always buy another boat.
@@oneswellfoop it's not just a boat for them it's their home. Yes you can buy another house but if you don't have the funds your homeless. The courage he showed under stress to stay and fight for his family's home is very admirable, a lot of people would have given up.
@@4WheelBuilds he got lucky. If he owned a house and a forest fire was coming, would he stay in the house to try and save it?
@@oneswellfoop it's a matter of risk assessment. Here the mast broke, other than that the boat was fine, in a house surrounded by fire no I would have left and rebuilt. Being from Australia I very well understand the damage fire can cause and how many lives it has taken.
@@oneswellfoop His boat did not sink or burn down.
So heartwarming to see the generosity of the sailing community showcased in this way. There’s no other group like it. ❤
Holy cow, what an amazing story. What an emotional roller coaster. Travis and Shawna, you guys rock. ❤
Far out, that's a truly amazing story. Great to see how the community rallied together and helped get Travis back to his family.
Colin, you did such a great job of capturing and producing this story! Thanks so much for sharing this with all of us. Fair Winds from Boston!
Damn, im not going to lie, that was a roller coaster of emotions for me. Brought several tears to my eye. Truly inspirational...I hope they finally get to the there destination.
I’ve never sailed but have been watching many CZcamsrs for years. I’ve learned that the sailing community is amazing how they come together to help another crew!! Awesome 👏
I have met a lot of people from Santa Cruz California. Always loved every one of them. These people are awesome and courageous!
The Sailing and boating community are second to none. What an epic story! God bless everyone involved! 👏⛵️💪🏻
What an amazing story of resilience and perseverance. And the camaraderie of the people that have a love for the sea.
I disagree with this video. Everyone takes the risk of sailing. The rest of the story lies on preparation to sail. Travel windows and maintenance to the vessel to take from point A to point B. Trying to turn these people into some kind of hero is setting future sailors up for failure. It is up to YOU.
@@jasongrinnell1986 where was nonchalance detected in their preparation? no amount of virtue, budget, or attentiveness can prevent the sea from her mischief
Totally disagree with Jason, you could be the best sailor on earth with the best maintained boat, and still get caught out when days from land, weather patterns change all the time. You just have to look at the ocean race for a case study.
@@havewheelslovesailing very true. Look at the Sydney to Hobart race. Always lose yachts due to the weather conditions. Very experienced crews and well maintained & prepared yachts.
@@jillianswaine4298 "always"??
What a testament to the full embodiment of the human spirit and the sailing community. Great video Colin. Thank you for using your influence to highlight this story.
Watching this thinking hmm... 🤔 Not having the app for the garmin kind of confirms the general vibe of not being the most prepared Or the most competent one could be. Gnarly indeed.
I have goosebumps and tears. Such a display of love from a community. All for one, one for all. Best of luck to them, all.
What a bugger you can only hit that like button once . Truly inspiring stuff from the community
That story is like a Hollywood movie. Way to go everyone involved and thanks for keeping this families dream alive. You are all the hero's
This account of what happens every day on the seas is important for those who chose to sail. If this episode encourages planning for the worst, it will save lives, Thanks.
The love and support from everyone is amazing. I basically cried the whole episode what a heartwarming and incredible story
Truly a great community and the will of all who were involved in the rescue is something to be very proud of as human beings.
Cheers Michael
Chills how incredible the boating community is. So glad this family saved their home and are safe.
As a parent myself, I can only imagine these parents' horror. And admire their courage. And thank God for their deliverance.
We gave what we could. My Dad built West Sails, and I hope his spirit was part of this positive story. Thanks for putting this out there.
Beautiful job telling the story, Colin and crew. As a father of 4 I can absolutely relate to the emotions this family must have felt. Courage is an understatement!
Funny how emotions can cloud your intellect. The boat was fine. Everyone was safe. No one ever was in danger.
Colin, I just started my day with this story and man oh man, what an amazing piece of production this is. The story of Travis, Shawna and the courage and community of all involved is truly inspiring. A true reminder that nothing in life is for certain, or guaranteed. Thanks for putting this out colin, and thankyou Travis, Shawna and family for sharing such a heavy experience with us. Much Love.
Awesome store and what a blessing to have some many people come out to help save the family and the boat. God will bless all that helped and the family.
I’m bawling through the whole video. Thank God they are all safe💞 What an amazing community 💞
Sometimes you have to dig deep to keep going , you have to be a special person to dig as deep as this guy , amazing story about an amazing man and the people that pitched in to help ..
I was trying to hold it…but …by the middle of the story, tears were flowing. The happiness of safe people and the humanity of the saviors and rescuers. thanks for sharing.
Again, I'm amazed. . You Colin and all the others who went way out of their way to assist people they didn't know is a guiding light for the rest of us to do more for our fellow man. . . As always to you and all the other people involved Fair winds and following seas God speed and love
What a powerful story of the sailing community going above and beyond for one of their own.
What a story! Great job Parlay on helping to tell it. Pretty awesome to see how so many people came together to make this a positive outcome vs. what could have been.
OMG! What a absolutely amazing, tearful, group effort story to not let them fail!!! Thank you all that did more than just go out of your way, but made it your job to help & save them! Thank God!!!
Storytelling at its very finest. Kudos.
Yeah guys I'm crying like a baby. My husband Derek is friends with Travis and was texting him while he was on his way home. I'm so stoked for you guys. Sending you so much Love from home (Santa Cruz). All that matters is your back together and safe. Travis your a hero and a FUCKING BADASS for saving your families home. Well Done brother.
Great documentary! Kudos to everyone here. Mom! You are a Rock Star! The courage to protect your children and allow your husband to save the boat is a testament the the supremacy of women! Just wow! And captain, you are the best example those boys could possibly have. A man doesn't quit his home. He protects it, saves it, and motors it to a safe harbor against all the odds. Beauty in action. And the community! I've been hunting my first boat and cannot wait to be a part of it. Humans are awesome!
I cried!! it was amazing!!!
Great story Collin! So glad that it ended well. The mariner family coming together for this family was incredible!
Wow, what a harrowing story and super well made documentary. We heard about this incident just before leaving for our passage. It’s absolutely incredible to see how mariners come to the rescue & support each other. Going above and beyond with hot meals and supplies. Thanks for sharing the full story. ❤❤❤
Fabulous storytelling Colin. And what a brave and resourceful man; geez… a true hero! Not a dry eye in this house either! (boat)
they need to start a series on the rebuild with this great a story it would be a hit!
oh they will.... it's a youtube moneymaker
Can we talk about how cute that baby is!!?? What a great video. I'm an offshore sailor and this is the nightmare we all have. Thank you for telling your story. So glad you're ok. Incredible video/story telling - well done, Colin!
I don't usual comment. But christ, I'm a young farther with an ambition of sailing but this video has reduced me to a crying mess. Don't cry usually but this really hit me, Unbelievable story telling from yourselves but what that man went through for his family is truly immense, not to mention the unbelievable kindness of the sailing community. Thank you for this and I'm so glad that everything turned out well!
Thank you Colin for sharing this story and helping celebrate the community that supported them and their dreams.
I have to tell you, my friend, I'm 84 years old, and this was one of the most emotional videos I have ever seen on CZcams. Thank you so much!
How does this not even have 100k views? This whole thing was incredible from the story telling to the editing, what an amazing documentary of a heroic tale. Amazing job all around
From one Travis to another, without words my friend, great decisions! What an experience,
Colin, thank you for telling thos story, and doing Travis and Shawna justice and telling the story of what the community did to get them home.
"I'm dismasted, not discouraged" That's awesome! Well done Parlay for the video and the courage and compassion from everyone involved!
WOW what an amazing story of tenacity and courage, this story had me in tears watching,,well done to all who helped ,, Kia Kaha from Aotearoa

Amazing touching story. I was crying several times . I will do what little I can
Wow Bless you ALL, can’t wait to read the book and or watch the movie!
I cried when he hugged his family
Thanks for another great episode Colin.
It's nice to see humans actually acting like humans, being there for each other without something in it for them. You don't see this very much today so please keep up the good work and please keep paying it forward.
no words, just wet eyes... and a very thankful heart to all who invested themselves.
Thank you for telling SV Ninwahuni's story, Colin! What a heart-warming story of determination amongst the stress and traumatic journey that this family has been on.
Tears love survivors! Thanks for sharing Parley! ❤
Gosh, I'm crying my heart out. what a story! So beautiful to see everybody come together, what a huge community the sailing world is.
Capitan! What an amazing and gnarly experience. So happy for you and your familia that you made it safely! What a wonderful community of support! Never give up the dream brother! Much love from the 831!
Wow! What a great and inspirational story!
WoW!! Incredible. And the documentary of the event is amazing. Colin, you have certainly saved their dream to continue on.
Just shows what an amazing community it is when in need.... incredible
Colin keep us updated on them… I would love to see them take that boat across the ocean…. Props to you for your donation
That shot with Travis after the rescue, sitting on the side of the boat, talking to his two sons looking up at him hit me in the heart. And their ‘thank you’s at the end….😍 these boys are why I feel hope for the future of this crazy new world..going to go donate now.
This has restored my faith in humanity. Way to come together!
Oh man …..a teary Sunday morning. Thanks Colin for putting that amazing doco together. It’s hard sometimes to be great full for the things we have.
You and your family are here for a reason. God bless you all, great things come after the storm.
What a fabulous story. Well done Colin and crew for bringing this inspirational story and for hi lighting what an incredibly selfless community you have.
What a story, what an experience.. it made me emotional to see him pull into that slip with his wife and kids waiting. The fellowship of the other mariners. Truly heartwarming and inspiring.❤
Awesome!!! Sent them a little bit of cash!! Thank you for the well told story!
Utterly incredible. Thanks Colin for sharing this mind-blowing situation, amazing community response, and heartwarming outcome through the Sailing Parlay Revival channel.
Wow! Just wow! What an amazing documentary! The courage it took to save their home. Colin you know this video will generate funding to help this family out. I'm donating. If everyone that watches this donates just ten bucks, I'm sure the repairs will be covered. Anyone who can afford the price of a beer to help this family and this amazing brave father should do so without hesitation. Kudos to the sailing community that helped these guys out. You are amazing people.
This was better than any Netflix documentary, really well done, GOOD JOB!!
What a trip. Can’t even think of everything he must of been thinking. Way to go sailing community. Thank you for sharing the story.
It truly takes a village. The village may float, but the support of the community gives hope that humanity is good.
Awesome awesome story. thank you all for helping!
I just watched your episode and it’s breath taking! Not only the amount of stress for one family but to watch your boat community come together for that young man that stayed on the boat. Holy cow. God bless you guys. I love watching parlay. It was a beautiful episode. I’m glad you shared that with everybody. Thank you Colon, you’re a very good man. I’ve been to go fund me page and hopefully everybody can donate a little bit or some a lot.! God bless you, and God bless that family and they will be all right because they have people like you around them.
Trying to catch up on parlay and this pops up, amazing story, excellent production, Parlay Revival will never disappoint!!!!!!
Cried my eyes out. So happy they made it. Big life lesson right here, and another proof that the sailing community has a heart as big as the oceans❤. Much love to all of you out there
Wow!
One of the best stories that i have heard in a long time!
Not a dry eye around here.
Happy Mother’s Day! ❤
Truly amazing story! Colin, nice job on using your subscriber base, and videography skills to pay it forward like I have seen you do so often over the years on here.
I was sailing in the same storm. We heard about this couple through a friend we were in touch with that was in PV. We were 2 days SSW of Socorro. I can only imagine what they were dealing with because at our position it was 8-10 foot waves at a period of 10-11 seconds!
I noticed they mentioned they assumed the rig was good because it was serviced by the previous owner. You have to check this before you leave!
Yes. Assumption is as good as an error. Losing a mast in high winds is not uncommon and I don't mean to slander the previous owner but being an engineer (was he a marine engineer?) alone is not enough to insure safety. An excellent engineer might possess the personality traits of a reckless cheapskate when it comes to his own private work. It was the traveller that went first. Did he have too much sail up? Too much slack on the vang? They should find out if they can. It may have been poorly secured to the super-structure. If he had no main-sail up at all, that could be a clue. We don't know for certain. Was Poseidon in a filthy mood?
Brilliant film making. Thanks so much. Best of luck Travis and Shawna . You are a inspiration to us all.🥂
Colin, Thanks to Travis and Shawna for letting you share their amazing and inspirational story and to you for the way it was told. It restores your faith when you see people come together as the cruising community did in this situation..... As Travis said, "dismasted, not discouraged." Keep up the good work!
what an amazing story, this community is second to none. This is why I sail .
I've never seen your channel before but had to click on it when I saw your thumbnail.
Your story brought tears of joy to see your family back to gather. The generosity of the Mexican people as well as the people on the other boats that ran to help only proves one thing.
Not all angles are above the clouds watching over us...some are in boats that travel the seas.
Hillary's words ring true....it really does take a village.
May you always believe in your guarding angles.
God bless you all.
Amazing!! Thank you for sharing and sending my best to the Nicolets!
So well done, thanks for sharing , so great when everyone mucks in and helps and he made it back, awesome rescue.
Heartbreaking to watch what Travis, Shawna and their kids had to go through. At the same time it's heartwarming to witness the incredible support and generosity they received during and after their ordeal.
Travis & Shawna, I wish you all well and fair winds from hear-on forth! Go live your dream!!
What a heartwarming story. God was definitely with them. Thanks Colin for sharing their experiences and all the wonderful people that helped him out. You have a fantastic community out there ❤
Wow now that’s a community that we all wish we were a part of. So amazing to see so many give of their time and money to help a family that was in dire need.
Colin great job on this video.
This is a very close friend of mine I grew up with in Santa Cruz. Absolutely incredible story and the kindness of other people is truly heart warming. This is what it's all about to love one another. I'm overjoyed Travis and his family, and their home are safe and soon to sail again. A testament to never giving up on your dream. God bless all who helped him 🙏
This is incredible! What a story. So well done. Some great people in this world! Cheers!
