A-ha! I See What Harry Styles Is Doing...

- Are the sounds of The 80s making a comeback?! "As It Was" is the new single by the world's current pop hero Harry Styles. Here, I'm reacting to it as I as go and I think I've realised exactly why this song is currently so popular. It reminds me of another song that might be one of the greatest pop hits ever made. What do you think? What makes that 80s classic great and this song just...good? Is there something missing? Or am I being too harsh on Harry? Or am I being too kind?! Tell me, please, tell me.

Bath thoughts need to be a segment
It's probably best not to admit you were involved, no matter how distantly, in x factor.
BTW, maybe you're too young to remember, way back in the 1960's there was a show called Opportunity Knocks, those cunts, cowell and lythgoe, 'borrowed' that idea, lock-stock-and-barrel, and made themselves very rich off an easliy pleased tv audience.
i suppose you gotta pay that gold bath off somehow!
dont beg
the way your head is laying on the mirror in the bath makes it look like you're laying head to head with Elon Musk in the bath. . ;)
I'm always impressed with Justin's ability to work out chord structures, keys and specific riffs on the fly. This man knows his way around a guitar.
Same here!!
I’ve noticed myself. Good ear as well.
It’s obvious he has a love for music, not just writing and playing. I would bet Justin has an extensive general knowledge of music.
It's not hard to do if you have even the slightest music knowledge
@@epec20 Look out we have a cocky genius over here. No but it is hard and requires years of practice. Slightest musical knowledge would be knowing how to create a chord or what a scale is.
Officially requesting that Bath Time becomes a recurring part of the show. I didn't realize how much I needed that!
It caught us all by surprise, but i echo your opinion 😂🛀
I agree..
Definitely agreed!
More Bath Time ✊️ More Bath Time✊️More Bath Time ✊️
you naughty pervert
8 years ago I went to see the Darkness in Cardiff. When Justin noticed my brother and I singing the words to Curse Of The Tollund Man he stopped the show and gave us £50 each. Still one of my fondest memories ever. Justin, if you’re reading this, I just wanted to say thank you so much. I still tell people that story often. I play in a band now and you’re a huge influence and always will be. How can I send you our new song? I’d love to know what you think. X
I really hope he replies to you. Rooting for ya

He just handed you guys some cash in the middle of the show?! That's fucking hilarious lol
@@SRJMUSICOFFICIAL me too.
You play music I am not in the least bit interested in - then you talk about it - and I become more and more interested. Its a delight! Thank you.
I find it odd that Harry Styles can be both mildly interesting and mind numbingly boring at the same time. I'm sure there's an art to that.
omg. fact.
The new album is surprisingly underwhelming.?
Cliff Richard has successfully done that for 60 yrs..lol..God I hate Harry Styles. ..he"a utterly ' beige'..I bet his fans love other British birds like James Corden..it's always the same crew of luvvies kissing each other's backsides!😆😆
it's the i'm attractive so my shit doesn't need to be imaginative formula
Sophie W beige is the perfect description, and I’m dying anyone who likes James cordon is not trustworthy!💀
The Sun Always Shines on TV is the best A-Ha! song. The way it starts out all mellow and slow then builds up into a guitar and synth frenzy; and melodic sustained vocals throughout.
SASOTV is an incredible song. Musically complex and lyrically melancholic. Aha rule!
And the music video, very haunting/dark like the song + used to scare me as a kid was way ahead of its time!
Ihave also been to the location of where they shot the video. was shot on location over three days early October 1985 at Udney Hall Gardens and the Victorian Gothic Church of Saint Alban the Martyr, both situated in Teddington, Richmond upon Thames, in England.
Close, but no cigar. A-Ha's best is 'Stay on these Roads'. 😎
alright SOTR is good but Manhattan Skyline? ;)
@@gemmaconway7765 The song/music video for Manhattan Skyline is really good. Though SOTR song/video are alright anyway 😁
Oh my god the bath tub interstitial absolutely KILLED ME. I threw my phone and squealed with delight and laughter. Thank you Xx
pondering in the tub.. not surprisingly a bath man... so genius, it might have been scripted... we have also seen lingering thoughts on the train... maybe talk running is or will be in the mix (like the running reviewer he covered) .... when thoughts come.. very much a thinking, travelling, talking, bath man.... i am realizing that if Justin Hawkins created a narrative for bathtub spoken monologue... I'd by it ....(some of the existing tracks are more shower aligned) ... it is great that he understands that there is an audience for his conversation .. compelling commentary
I barely noticed A-Ha when they first landed on our shores. It wasn’t until the Unplugged series that I truly began to appreciate just how amazingly well crafted those songs are. They will surely start d the test of time!
Barely noticed, where you from Croatia?

New album coming out in October called true north
I was lying in the bath enjoying another Justin Hawkins video on my phone. Imagine my surprise when he suddenly decides to join me! No worries fellow Suffolk boy, I'll budge over. Plenty of room for 2. Let's do it again someday soon.
'Justin Hawkins bathes again' may be my most favourite thing ever.
Petition to have Bathtub Musings section established weekly at least
He has a lovely face & he sings alright.
That part got me😂
Looking fantastic Justin!
Thank you so much for the A-ha chat. I’ve been a fan for such a long time, it’s so uplifting to hear them complimented from another one my favourite artists
🧡🙏🏼
More ‘Justin Hawkins bathes again’ please.
i'm glad that Harry Styles is able to get out of that One Direction sphere and being able to branch out and create something many and even i like. i don't listen to pop everyday, but he is able to keep me interested in his sound
Love watching your stuff man! Found out that you were on CZcams through a What makes this song stinks episode. I’m glad you’re doing well and I love your insight on vocals, lyrics, and song structure! Keep up the great work on this platform!
ahahaHAHA the contemplative bathtub interlude! Relatable. And yep, what I've heard of the new H.S. song just makes me want to listen to A-ha. I always end up learning a lot about music from your videos, whilst not really noticing I'm learning, because I'm so freaking entertained. I appreciate that.
no pun intended with the ahahaha by the way. Honestly.
There’s also a tune on the album called “music for a sushi restaurant” that has a horn section very similar to “susudio” by Phil Collins
The first song I heard with that A-Ha drum beat and Synth melody was Blinding Lights then it seemed to be copied by Justin Bieber with Stay and then I heard Ed Sheeran do Shivers and Harry Styles releases As It Was, It surprises me that these pop stars could be so obvious with almost copying eachothers singles and it not worry them that it's seems really inauthentic, they all sound very similar to me.
Yeah. It was "almost" artistically valid (factoring in a big slab of amnesia) when Blinding Lights came out, because it's a great tune. But when they all do an A-Ha track? Yawn. Why not just listen to Take On Me? It's better and will always be. Not many derivatives beat the original.
In my opinion admiting your rip off someone and getting money shouldn't be a thing
They’ve been at it since the beginning of music
Ed Sheeran had a point though when he won his recent court case though. Theres only so many notes.
I keep singing your intro around the house & yard. I didn't know I could hit those notes! My neighbors probably think I'm weird.
And they would be right!😜
I do it, too! I was clearing off my table the other day and started singing, "🎵🎵 Justin Hawkins rides again... again. 🎵🎵"
Hey Justin, I love your song analyses and the comparisons you draw. I would love to hear your thoughts on The Eagles' 'Hotel California' and Jethro Tull's much earlier song 'We Used to Know'.
From what I've heard, Ian has always been very humble about the "similarities" but I know that you're not afraid to call a spade a spade. Many thanks.
Justin you are the greatest guitar instructor I've ever had. 👍 My playing has improved 40-50 % since I began watching these. Cheers
Glad you're on CZcams. Just found your channel. The Darkness were an absolute vibe when I was a younger man. Need to go and listen to some of your tunes now...!
A-ha have a ton of fantastic songs. Take on Me is but one of them: Manhattan Skyline, Summer Moved On, Angel in the Snow, Out of Blue Comes Green, Analogue, Sun Always Shines on TV, Under the Makeup, and just way to many to mention spanning a few different genes actually. They are magnitudes of brilliance above those that use them as an influence . . . And that's with acknowledging Style's is a decent effort, ditto the Weeknd's Blinding Lights too.
Love me some a-Ha. 🤘
Minor earth major sky is a great song of theirs too
Minor earth, major sky
Hunting high and low 🙌🏻 i was a tiny little girl and crazy about this tune. Memories !!!

Well now I need a metal bathtub ! When I heard it on the radio it reminded me of Keen.
This is the first video I've watched of yours, Justin, and I really enjoyed it.
At first I thought I was going to be getting a kind of budget Rick Beato, but this is more than that - it's _British_ budget Beato, with humour.
Nice barnet, Justin. Sharp. A-ha's output was amazing, and 'Take on me' was such a timeless bit of beautiful melancholy. When does 'influence' become 'rip off'?
This, 'Pink Lemonade' by James Bay and 'The Adults Are Talking' by The Strokes form the trinity of sound-alike songs that are still a bop somehow
There are so many aspects of this that feel lifted from Pink Lemonade
Love the change in venue.
First time I have seen your channel, not what I expected (don’t know what I was expecting) what a great window into songwriting… ace!
Love this. Love A-Ha. Scoundrel Days is an exceptional album, so much to explore beyond the pop smarts.
Yep absolutely and A-Ha could vomit a better song 🤢🤮🌟than Styles and his 400 writers have 💩
Would love to see you review something off of his first self titled album-there are a lot of classic rock influences and really interesting choices for a “pop artist!” But loved this video and your input 🤩
Couldn't agree more. I think Justin would be pleasantly surprised by the songs that didn't get released as singles
I've already heard someone mash-up the vocals of each song with the others melody. It is eerie how similar it is, thank you Justin for breaking it down.
My god you can literally mash up any songs lol I mean there's an excellent mash up of Taylor Swift's Cardigan and Harry Styles Falling they even mashed up the videos because they had similarities. Harry's came first if anyone was wondering. There are also mashups of Taylor Swift's Style and One Direction's Perfect, some great and some not so great. Harry is known for his influences from the past and if he does borrow a portion or if the influence is really strong he does credit them as writers. He's not stealing he's paying homage and directing his fans to their music.
a-ha are such a great band. Their recent documentary (a-ha: the movie) is really interesting, they are like Fleetwood Mac without the sex - they can't stand being in the same room with each other most of the time but still can't resist getting back together every couple of years. I guess it's hard to turn down all that money!
Oh they don’t need the money. They genuinely love music.
I love their music despite the diminishing returns of the last twenty years for the most part but they appear cold and aloof to me. I saw them in Manchester a few years ago and they did not seem to know which city they were in. I could not care less about Manchester but when people have been out all day working for a living it is basic courtesy to be clear about this.
It reminded me a bit of The Strokes when I first heard it, and then I saw people doing covers of it in the style of The Strokes. Maybe a little influence in there too?
The synth in this song and driving bass is pure Future Islands…….love your videos Justin! Cheers.
man just watched the growing on me video again, oh god that take in front of the house with the wall of marshalls, you sir are a legend.(with the link suit 🤣)
Loving the Aha vibes.... such a great band still making great music. Foot of the Mountain one of their best
It reminded me of metronomy as well!! so glad to see someone else picked up on that!
Really enjoyed that lovely edit for the pop factor....pause......anyway....
Love the channel Justin. Keep doing what makes you happy 🤘
Then the edit for Keith Harpoon! Do we have a new editor!?
nice of you to grace us with your on the fly off the cuff presentation!
I really like you Justin, I love how considered you are without being afraid to say what you think.
More clips from the tub, please. Or maybe just a new segment called "Clips from the Tub"??
I only know your MTV video from the 90's and forgot the title. But... I was so happy to listen to these podcasts. Question... would an amateur recording ever survive your blender?
“Take on me” is also in A major. It starts on the second chord (Bm)
LOL that bit about the Easter Is Cancelled wardrobe call-out got me but good.
Also did you chop your mane again, sir?! Shock! Dismay!
Finding you channel is proving to be an absolute joy. I am enjoying being educated on the world of music of which I know very little. I had never noticed how similar they are and how much better Take On Me is. Though I will remain a liker of Harry Styles, I shall now treat his music with a degree of caution and suspicion that all maybe not as good as it sounds!
No caution or suspicion needed. He has always been very open about a lot of his music music paying homage to the greats that came before him. The most important part of the songs though, the lyrics, are completely his own.
Great analysis and loving your content Justin. I've only just recently discovered Daniel Johns from Silverchair and would be great to hear your thoughts on the evolution of his voice and music since the 90's. ✌🏾
This would be great!
Kid Harpoon's real name is Tom, he's a local lad who played a lot in the Medway scene as a solo act during the Libertines rise to fame. He's done pretty well for himself, he's also co-written stuff with Florence Welch.
I remember his song Late For The Devil coming on a few times back when music video channels were still a thing.
Only thing I've ever heard by him and loved it. Blast from the past hearing that name.
Nice one justin i thought i was good with music but you just break it down brilliantly
Saw another comment further down, but I agree with the idea that Harry Styles will be remembered first and foremost as a performer.
The songs are fun and I think there's absolutely nothing wrong with a pop artist simply making fun catchy music you can dance to with your friends. Does he reference his influences a bit too clearly? Maybe. But I don't mind listening to a track like Grapejuice and feeling that early solo McCartney vibe, or Canyon Moon with the Joni feel, or Kiwi's classic guitar-driven rock sound. I do think he puts enough of himself and modern flavor into them to keep it more interesting and away from being simple pastiche.
But really I think where he does set himself apart is on stage - watching the way he brings a crowd to life and the energy he gives a performance (not to mention the killer musicians he surrounds himself with on stage and the more dynamic live musical arrangements) - I think that'll be his true legacy.
(also some of the comments on here are just rancid. Attacking and belittling people for liking a musician and sharing their feelings about them? How pretentious and sad must you be)
You're absolutely right Mr Hawkins.... I think we will remember A-Ha not Harry Styles. You rock the red cat suit way better I have to say..and I think 'Love is Only a Feeling' will go down in rock history.
Thank you for the incredible musical insights Justin. Nobody seems to be discussing the lyrics, which resonated with me after the last few years.
I get the feeling that Harry Styles is following the Taylor Swift model of singer-songwriting: essentially writing a poem, and then finding top notch musicians and producers to make that poem as accessible to people as possible. I enjoy that kind of music as vehicle approach, maybe because I'm better at words than tunes myself. But you're right that the music itself won't last. Not sure if the lyrical ideas will, but they certainly connect with a lot of people in the moment.
The tub takes this analysis to a level Beato can only dream of ... Fantastic !
The greatest A-Ha! song is “Manhattan Skyline” hands down.
(RIP Benny Harvey. Miss ya big man.)
Well, being that every single time that I've heard this song playing at a gas pump - approximately five hundred and twenty three times, give or take a hundred and ten - I thought that it was Coldplay all of this time.
Listening to it now, I immediately looked at my gas tank gauge out of some form of Rasputin-like mental conditioning.
So, this channel has once again proven its worth. (Ha)
Great work as always!
Three Blind mice? "Three Blind Mice kinda rips!" Patrick Finnerty! But you know that, you were in that video ;)

Right, from hence forth we will be requiring a dedicated "Bath tub interjection" in your videos!! In fact all videos no matter the creator should have "Bath time" along with a dance number! Now as for the Harry Styles - Depeche Mode reference I believe he holds his arm and hand a loft much in the same fashion as Mr. David Gahan, I think that's where the inspiration of DM resides in the video/song. Cheers from a warmer feeling Canadian prairie.
Oh my God the section from the bathtub - a gold one no less- just made my night. Finally somebody with a sense of humor
Also re: take on me - it was one of the only videos on MTV that people would never turn off, even though it played relentlessly, because it was just so catchy and mood-lifting.
I honestly was %1000 more interested in your two second clip of “In Another Life” than the entirety of Harry’s song
Your a breath of fresh air . Subscribed !
It's an earworm (though I prefer A-ha)
I think it's apparent that much of Mr. Styles's success is derived from him raiding your wardrobe! The world deserves the truth!
You look fabulous!! I love it.
You look like mickey Pearce off only fools and horses mate. Bravo. In other news, 'Hunting high and low' and 'Living a boys adventure tale' both fart all over 'Take on me' with ease.

"All Summer Long is one of the dumbest things I've ever heard but I've got nothing bad to say about Three Blind Mice!"
When I first heard the song, I immediately thought it sounded like The Strokes. A-ha didn't really come to me because Take On Me is definitely more nuanced.
Whereas this song feels as though it's been taken straight out of The New Abnormal, the new album by The Strokes.

Hey Justin! Kid Harpoon is Tom Hull. He's also written for Adele, Florence and the machine, Jessie Ware and many more. He recorded in his own too before production and songwriting for others. I never imagined that I'd end up liking Harry Styles' music, not really into boy bands....but I actually really like some of his solo stuff.....it'll be interesting to see what he's doing in 10 years' time...
That opening to HS' song does sound just like Take On Me...it's OK but not a career high all time great for HS, IMO..
But surely it was ever thus? Led Zep lifted stuff left, right and centre...doesn't stop them being one of the greatest rock bands ever...
I really don’t think he’s copping too hard on the A-Ha song. He’s not the first.
It’s just puffy pop, that sounds like many other recent pop acts. It’s not my thing to begin with, but I have nothing against Harry Styles.

U2's 'New Year's Day' had formed in a similar way, when they were having a jam of the Visage song 'Fade To Grey' and bassist Adam Clayton accidentally mixed up the chord sequence; Pretty awesome 'mistake', I reckon! 😄
hi justin, greetings from vienna austria. love your videos and your ways of thinking and talking about music. thought you should know :-) servus from vienna, the sun is shining, i'm wearing my blue jeans and i feel great !
It’s a bit of a trend at the moment to use the A-Ha aesthetic and I think you hit the nail in the head when you said it’s like they mathematically extracted what makes a great pop melody. You see the same thing in Dua Lipas Physical and of course Blinding Lights by the Weeknd. I always thought the production of all of these is very reminiscent of Johnny and Mary by Robert Palmer. Either way I really like the song! (I have no musical talent, just ears 😊)
It is actually been a «trend» ever since a-ha came out. Coldplay says they were one of their biggest inspirations. A-ha, massively underrated for the influence they have on music industry as a whole.
Wasn't expecting a candid bathtub sequence
It's a TikTok song, that happens to be highly influenced by Aha. It seems quite intentional. If they are still watching TikTok on the mars colony, in 30 years, it may have staying power. Love your commentary - I really learned a lot. 👍
I'm not a Harry Styles nut but did you ever consider that perhaps there wasn't a shadowy corporate coven to reconfigure A-Ha and the song was produced organically with four chords and we simply project A-Ha onto it?
Agreed, especially since he's talked in interviews about his band's input and the songwriting process. I'm not so convinced it's a 'mathematical' calculated thing, just musicians thinking it sounds cool
I think jumping from the main video to his jacuzzi is one of the best tangents you could ask for 😂
Looking sharp with the new trim Justin.
Justin, you are far more diplomatic than I am. Deep class. Cheers!
Love seeing people in the rain, in the sea..in the bath! Lovely copper. K x x
as a longtime die-hard Harry fan, let me just say thank you for treating his songs with respect & actually talking about how they're written and how they sound and what their place in history is.
In interviews about the album, Harry has talked about minimalism and the idea of bringing things down to bare essentials, so I'm not surprised to hear you say this is a-ha stripped down to the barest, most technical essentials to make the song a hit. (I heard a clip early and honestly thought it couldn't possibly be the finished song because it's so much simpler than what I expect from Harry!)
Harry has also implied this particular song was heavily engineered to be a hit. His process appears to be to go fuck around and figure out what the sound of the album will be, write the weird stuff, put that on the B side, and then go write his A sides for radio based on what came from the sound-finding part. Two (or maybe all three? not sure about Sign of the times.) of his lead singles were written very last for the album.
I think this album as a whole was written with performing in mind. And to really get Harry I think you just have to see him live. His voice live has so much more artistry and nuance than you get from the albums (generally) and the energy is insane. He'll be remembered for that, not so much the songs (though I think Watermelon Sugar and one song from this album -love of my life - have a lot of longevity & as you've said he has the capacity to produce songs with real longevity in the future)
Some of his fans think he may just be phoning it in on this album in an effort to dump a fine album in Columbia's lap and be done with his current contract... I don't think this is true but it shows it's definitely not lost on his own fans that while catchy and popular this song is a bit uninteresting.
The last thing I have to say is that I really think originality is dead. We have now two generations of young people who grew up with access to massive libraries of all kinds of music and other media you can imagine. Trying to come up with something no one has ever done is futile. What every interesting young artist I know of - popular or extremely underground - is doing is treating the past like a paint set. It's musical collage. And what Harry does very, very well is wear his references on his sleeve and bring his fans in to the joy of discovering and appreciating the references and seeing how they've been reinterpreted to suit Harry, to say what Harry wants to say, and to sound current.
I don't think this is worse than or even particularly different from how a lot of past artists have written, it's just that now everyone has access to the songs the artist is referencing and so it's much harder to hide your references. And that's why the clever artists are embracing their references and using them to say something rather than pretending they're musical geniuses birthed from the void. Picasso said it: good artists borrow, great artists steal. Is As It Was greatness? no. But across the board, Harry's a great magpie. (and has a lot of vocal talent, is a great performer, and has a really strong perspective as a lyricist)
I don’t really get you giving Harry credit for wearing his influences on his sleeve. I mean, theres loads of artists out there who are influenced by sounds of the 60s/70s/80s but they bring something new to the table. Harry styles essentially mimics the work done by superior artists and waters it down slightly to increase its mass marketability. He takes zero risks.
@@Gino565 I give him credit not for using existing sounds, but rather for using existing sounds in a way that makes them greater than the sum of their parts. Referencing things well is part of the art form. You're entitled to disagree, but that's what you missed in my comment.
well said :)
@@shedoesconcerts5762 Again, what are you talking about? Harry styles is about as surface level as they come when you get to this style of music. This whole paragraph you’ve typed up sounds like some shit Patrick Bateman would write, trying to make something that’s realistically quite shallow into something deeper than it actually is. Harry styles is just an average artist. You think originality is dead because you listen to Harry styles. When there’s mountains of music out there that’s actually doing something new.
@@Gino565 Listening to Harry Styles means I listen to nothing else, got it. I definitely wasn't talking about much broader cultural shifts or idk several decades of art history or anything.
edit: btw, happy to take recs.
Like how you nut out the songs well done....when you said "Hes got a lovely face" probably 90 percent why he is there
Carrying on the theme which One Direction employed when their writers took influence from The Who’s “Baba O‘Riley (Best Song Ever) and Def Leppard’s “Pour some sugar on me” (Midnight Memories). My daughters were into them at the time….honest.
I have loved As It Was this year. It has been one that I put on to cheer me up. Now, as you asked, will it be good 40 years from now? Only time will tell. There are pop songs that I loved 10 and 20 years ago and no longer do, and ones that I still love.
You should look into the history of "Take on me". It goes back to the 70s when Aha were teenagers.
