I’ve never liked Metallica enough in the past to buy any of their records, but absurdly enough, I was given free tickets to see them live in Sacramento, CA in 2018 and again in 2019 at the opening night of the Chase Center in San Francisco with the S.F. Symphony Orchestra. Each show was significantly different, but both were equally fantastic. In my opinion, Metallica are, and always have been, the real deal.

Lars is more than a drummer, he has an ear for placement and accentuation not just on drums but all instruments and the song as a whole. His offbeat crash is iconic, his fills don't follow metal cliches, makes very good use of the snare on odd beats during a lot of his fills...he's technically not the best but he is iconic and his drum tracks are memorable.

And you re original and you re part of the greatness of songwriting and arranging entity, you re great.
Why always say , within guys that are totally different " Oh he doesn't play the same , he s not at the same level ".
Art is not comparing to Gelateria dude.
Its like saying " Chick webb was okay, but never of the level of Louie Bellson " whats the point of doing that ?
In early Metallica's , Lars did a lot of triplets feet even in his skan beats, he did a lot of coordinations hand feets by 5 and 4 and even 6 on several songs such Fight Fire with Fire, Ride the Lightning , Trapped Under Ice and Battery before the solo and Welcome home through the solo and At the ending and more , also almost what Mitch Mitchell took from max roach type fill with 2 bass drums in the last opening chorus of Shortest straw , with also to me a little Simon Phillips inspiration, a very weird thing between 4 hits rolls- flam tap snare stuff and mooving from toms with the triplet bass drums.
      Brillant !
Something Dave practically never did in Slayer, especially in the begining, he did mostly Quads or Old school triplets like in original of agressive perfector. You have a little more on Hell Hawaits, But its really around South of heaven and Season in the Abyss that Lombardo combine more the top and bottoms limbs in fills.
Dave also did his thrash beats at just one note of the bass drum, and his ride thing is quite linear.
Lars ride playing, the few he had playing, had accents in holes in double strokes, up , exactly like Paicey in Strombringer. Or even Bill Ward especially in the mid to late 70's through Heaven and Hell.
I do that a lot too because Paice is my number one.
      Mikkey dee does it too.
It gives something Funky that Dave doesn't have, or not that way.
You can hear that on the last chorus of Fight fire with Fire , it has a great pocket .
Lars did in disposable heroes breakdown a lot of that ride swing accentuations into that first kind half of parradidle going to the toms.
Lars also did some of the things cozy powell originated, like the Creeping death thing , you find in Harvester of Sorrow , Frayed ends, Welcome home , And Justice for all, like variations such 4 strokes in snare followed by a 4 or 5 hits going from 3 toms 2 feet.
Or in welcome home in the half time part before the harmonious climax towards the end of the song.
Snare left hand on the begining , right hand snare and 4 coordinations on toms followed by the popo tach tach ..
On the Seattle 1989, with the camera on him just from the rack Tom point of view, he s doing it the Carmine appice way , Left Hand snare on the time followed by Left hand snare on quarter note pointed, before the tom followed by the 2 bass drums .
You don't do all that if you re just okay.
Also when you arrange such songs.
You re great in your own .
When i hear or read comments that Lars never knew much about drumming , i say bullshit.
You don't do that if you don't know shit, at the contrary , Lars knew what he was doing, arranging and tracking thoses songs, performing them.
A lot of accents and reactions in places that weren't supposed to, very much in the school of Bill Ward, Keith Moon and people like this, a way of doing things people look sometimes a mistake because nowadays they such formated into the academic thing cyborg bullshit even into the guys that play extreme modern stuff like Cymbals on 1 and 3 etc...
Myself i get criticize a lot because as all thoses guys since the 60's purposely as answer of falling of musical movement as slap in face or spicy things, i did on 2 or 4 . Its part of my style as well.
Even Ian Paice, The guy from Diamond Head etc...
Lars has also a kind of barbaric lose style into extreme and intricate stuff in feel, like Mercyful Fate, which i don't think is an accident ;) .

And regardless of what the _supposed_ die hards say, if it wasn't for Bob Rock, Metallica would be nowhere near as big as they are now, and that's said from a fan since well before they released The Black Album. That's just a fact.

Sad but true is great because it's slow. Lars can hold his own as long as there's no need to play fast or, god have mercy on us.. play double bass. He's all over the place. just have a look at any live show. It's James who's holding the songs together when it comes to time keeping. his right hand is a f**ing metronome.
Lars being crap at drums technique doesn't take away from the drum patterns he composed and the song they wrote.
Now if you really want proof, just have a look at the few shows where Jordisson filled in. It's painfully obvious. There's probably a reason why he hasn't been asked to be a feature drummer by any band, despite his platinum hits :p

Metallica got me into metal music and got mi into a lot of other stuff like many of us. First song I heared from them was Whiskey in the Jar back when I was a kid in the 90's. Then an older cousin got me some casettes and that was it for me. Been a metal head since then...

The Payola's "eye's of a stranger" was Bob Rocks start. The tom sound was nothing short of perfect and Bob's guitar was excellent.

Someone PLEASE remake the Swayze classic Roadhouse and put Justin in the starring role! Seriously, this is the funniest video you’ve done so far. Crying.

There will be in 2023 starring Jake Ghyllenhal (or however it’s spelled).

I’ve never really been in to heavy rock, metal, etc. a lot of my mates were, I was into punk, alternative (I’m 58) but absolutely love JH and his videos, his honesty, humour, knowledge and general piss-taking is refreshing

The Darkness is awesome live! I saw you at Jone’s Beach back in 2004. I went there to see the Beastie Boys live and The Darkness was also on the bill. I was blown away because you reminded me of all the rock/metal concerts I had seen as a teenager in the 1980’s. Can you do that “bouncing the pick off of your shoe” trick on Justin Hawkins Rides Again? That is such a bad ass trick! When I saw you do it, I had to rub my eyes because I thought I was seeing things. Haha! Also, awesome vocals on the VH songs at the Taylor Hawkins Tribute Concert. (Also a huge Metallica fan.) Cheers.

The opening to this always reminded me of Van Halen’s Tora! Tora! from Women and Children First. And I always expect them to launch into Loss of Control after the first break. 😂
