In the summer of 1944, Major League Baseball was approached to host a first-of-its-kind event in order to raise money to support the American military. What followed was one of the strangest games in the history of the sport.

Wait, so three teams played and they STILL took over an hour less than what the average was in 2019?
It was only a 6 inning game.
@@bimbamjam no it was still 9 innings total
@@yikes6969 Technically, it was Nine Innings, but each team had six innings of at-bat and six innings in the field, so in effect, for each team, it was a Six Inning Game. So, bimbamjam has a point.
But in theory it actually saves more time because instead of that game time being divided to two teams’ schedules, it covers three teams’ schedules.
@@YogGroove no, there was 9 innings in THAT game
April 2nd, 1971 - Astrodome fans are treated to a 15-inning exhibition "tripleheader" between the Astros, Yankees and Twins. Houston nips New York, 2-1, in the first five-inning game and later tops Minnesota, 5-3, in the finale. In between, the Twins down the Yankees, 4-1.
I've been thinking about how a 3 team game would work, sounds like we came up with a similar solution. Not a great solution, one team sits while 2 play. Sometimes you're fielding, batting, or sitting for 6 outs
I enjoyed the video I watched yesterday so much that I came to watch this one today. And I very much enjoyed it this is great once you get that new microphone you will pass me in no time! Definitely the most underrated baseball channel!
I never saw this as a sacrilege. One time, 3 teams once every other World War.
Played a three team game in my vintage base ball league last year. It was pretty bizarre.
It'd be neat to see other sports try this someday
Would actually work better in hockey , basketball ormsoccer as all 3 teams.could be on the field at once
@@elliotthunter6226 How? Have 3 nets/goals??
@@ajk yes. Actually when i was a little.kid i had action figures of hockey players and id often set up little 3 way games ( before i knew the rules to.real.hockey) so the concept isnt forign to me. Wwe wrestling has triple threat mathes often to
They have done this. In the NHL Allstar game
@@mikestettenbenz8743 Not same idea, that was more tourney style.
Brüh, this entire event sounds lit AF. this should be how they play the All Star game
Great video!
Congrats on being the first comment on a baseball historian video

Or something like that 😂
How have I never heard of this?! What a wild game haha.
Cool video and excellent editing man, good work, I subbed. I thought I knew every single silly baseball fact and 100% never knew about this hahah
That’s the goal of this channel, to find some of the more weird/obscure stories from baseball history and tell them in a fun way!
@@BaseballHistorian look forward to upcoming videos. As a CZcamsr myself, don't think I don't appreciate the video editing here, amazing work, especially getting all these old clips together
@@SquareTableDegenerates Thank you for the support, I appreciate it!
this is such a great video! what a great reminder about understanding and appreciating the times you live in, too! I think they should play this way all the time! minus the war part, of course
Nice!
thanks for sending me here
It's my theory that Ted Williams is the greatest American that ever lived. The original John Wayne.
Awful theory, not even the greatest American Baseball player, so American? ☠😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣
@@daltonfarris he's a million times the American than the very amateur comedian I'm speaking with.
One that doesn’t believe in God doesn’t get my vote for Greatest American
for me it's less about the not believing in god, more about the racism against the latinos

Just found your channel! Great content keep it up!
This is my Fav video from you!
great video! keep up the awesome work!
Just found your channel have been binge watching. You got a subscriber in me keep doing your thing man its awesome!
Dodgers vs Giants vs Mets would be an interesting Three team game. Because it will honor the Orange and blue colors Since the Giants and Dodgers left New York and the Mets took over.
The new thumbnail looks nice!
Thanks! Wanted to update it to fit with the style of the other ones.
@@BaseballHistorian it’s really good and I noticed one of the videos went unlisted was that because of the mic quality?
@@RetroBaseball Yeah, I wasn’t happy with the audio quality, so I unlisted it. Maybe I’ll re-record it in the future, but it’ll stay down for now.
They should bring this back! But not just in New York. There are 30 teams. You can have 10 three way games played during the season that includes all of the teams. Add the other fun activities and it would be awesome!
How have I never heard of this? I've read pretty extensively about baseball over the years. Did it count or was it technically an exhibition game?
Most Olympic sports: “First time?”
If anybody knows how to make a fun game, it’s mathematicians. Especially when it involves a prime number like 3!
I would love to see this in spring training or something
i love this stuff
Why did they overcomplicate this? All you had to do was expand each inning into three parts instead of two.
Top of Inning: Dodgers Bat
Middle of Inning: Yankees Bat
Bottom of Inning: Giants Bat
Then, Platoon who is on defense per third-of-inning, every other inning. Example:
(all odd numbered innings)
Top of First: Giants in Field
Middle of First: Dodgers in Field
Bottom of First: Yankees in Field
(all even numbered innings)
Top of Second: Yankees in Field
Middle of Second: Giants in Field
Bottom of Second: Dodgers in Field
I figured this out as a teenager organizing neighborhood games. How the hell did a math professor not figure this out?
(If this format is too long, just make the game six innings)
If you're playing a 9 inning game, the Dodgers bat against the Giants 5 times and the Yankees 4 times. Not necessarily an issue for an exhibition game, but to do it this way, you need either an even number of innings, or you live with some imbalance. (To your credit, the Giants bat against the Dodgers 4 times and the Yankees bat against the Dodgers 5 times, so total team vs team matchups do balance, but who's batting within them doesn't)
The six inning idea is actually good because that constitutes 18 half innings, the same as regular baseball game, as opposed to 27 half-innings in a 9 inning game. And it solves the imbalance problem.
Great video! It would be okay if you talk a little slower or don't cut out natural pauses in speaking though, also it would make the video a bit longer too!
Thanks for the feedback! I’ve been working on trying to nail down the voice-over, it’s still a work in progress but I think I’m getting better.
@@BaseballHistorian I can tell you have been working on it! This is the first video of yours I watched; on the newer videos you do a really nice job with the voice over. Keep up the great videos!
Ok I'm subscribed you got me.
they overcomplicated it all they did was play 3 games of 3 innings each with the teams rotated
The closest we got to seeing Kohlii in real life.
Did you mean that John McGraw was in attendance, because he died in 1934? :/
They should have played Scrub baseball. AKA Workup.

How did that player with bad eyesight hit?
Any link to a box score?
Sure thing! You can find a box score in this SABR article I used for research for this video: sabr.org/gamesproj/game/june-26-1944-the-tri-cornered-war-bond-baseball-game/
go dodgers!
I can see MLB adopting this type of game in an effort to speed it up.
Auto racing has races of 10 plus teams.
