- With winds gusting as high as 28 miles-per-hour, the Cubs and Phillies engaged in an epic slugfest at Wrigley Field. 11 home runs and 45 runs later, they concluded the second highest scoring baseball game in Major League Baseball history.

This game further supports my idea to have the Marlins break the home run distance record by playing with the roof open during a hurricane.
Fully on board with this
Or set the record for most cars in the parking lot with busted out windshields from foul balls.
I remember reading a newspaper article about this game which began with “The Cubs scored 22 runs, and they *still* couldn’t win.”
This makes me miss NBC’s Baseball Game of the Week
Fun Fact: This game was not televised in the Philadelphia area. We only had the radio broadcast. They didn't show this on TV until later in the week on an off day titled Shootout in Chicago. Some more fun facts: in the late 70's/early 80's it seemed like these 2 teams would interchange players. Several players in this game at one point in their careers played for both teams. Phillies players in this game who also played for the Cubs included Greg Gross, Doug Bird, Rawley Eastwick, Rudy Meoli(former Cub Manny Trillo was also on the Phillies but didn't play in this game). Cubs players in this game who were also Phillies were Ivan DeJesus, Ted Seizmore, Barry Foote, Jerry Martin, Willie Hernandez. As was stated in this video, the Phillies were in 1st place in the NL East with a 24-10 record but after this wild game it was all down hill as they ended up going 60-68 the rest of the season and finished in 4th. Just a side note, 2 Phillies in this game, Ron Reed and Bake McBride, are being inducted into the Phillies Hall of Fame and will be put on the Wall of Fame on 8/6/22. Oh, and the Phillies centerfielder you disrespected is 8X Gold Glove winner Garry Maddox who was called The Secretary of Da Fence in his day so if you're going to besmirch a center fielder, this isn't the guy to besmirch.
I watched most of that game on TV. It was such a news story, the local network re-ran the game a couple of days later. Unheard of at the time...
Great editing job and narration! Your passion and humor is excellent.
Fun trivia, Chicago got the nickname of “Windy City” due to its talking politicians!
That's a myth -- every city has windbag politicians, so that would be a pretty dumb nickname. The "Windy City" was coined by a New York newspaper regarding Chicago's stated ambitions to overtake New York as the leading American city, Chicago being the second largest city in the US for most of the 20th century. It was also probably a play on the Chicago lakefront's reputation for windiness. During this controversy, New Yorkers also gave Chicago its other derisive nickname "Second City". Alas, Chicago has long since dropped in the rankings with Los Angeles being the 2nd largest US city now.
A lot of my favorite players of all time from both teams.
Oh wow...I remember hearing about this game while staying at the Watergate hotel in DC, having won the trip for being on Jr. High Quiz.
Nice to see a complete rundown of the game after all these years!
Crazy thing about watching a game from the 70s is seeing how hard guys run towards bases, even home plate, on a base hit that'll easily score them. Seeing so many guys not run hard nowadays unless they need to, it's kind of unique.
Simply spectacular… loved the coverage of every run, awesome!
I remember a Mets/Cubs game, probably back in the 80s. It didn't quite get this out of hand, but I think it was something like 18-14 or something. The Mets were making a comeback and Lee Smith was brought in. I remember the announcers saying that he must have asked to be put in, because it wasn't an important game and usually you wouldn't run your star closer out in that sort of a game. Smith shut the Mets down.
Pete Rose does not belong in the HOF, unless his plaque specifically says that he bet on his own games- even if he bet for them to win that means that he managed the games to win on a specific day rather than to get the most wins at the end of the season. Maybe a blank plaque that just lists his numbers and why he didn't get one with his name.
Dumb argument. Pete Rose absolutely deserves to be in the Hall of Fame and no argument will convince me otherwise. Pete Rose is absolutely a Hall of Famer in the eyes of even the most novice Baseball fans with only a rudimentary knowledge of his feats.
Fantastic video! Thank you for posting. Probably on WGN back in the day, but I think that was a few years before we could get that station on cable.
Great to see the combination of power hitting and small ball that made for great baseball in the 70s and 80s. I miss it.
I'd actually watched the game on TV (Philadelphia channel 17) that day. Never thought it would end. Sadly, the Phils went on a cliff after that game, (Ending in 4th place in the NL East) with Ozark being fired and replaced by Dallas Green. When the wind blows out at Wrighley, watch out for homers.
At least they rebounded the next year
@@mattmurphy5805 I know. I can still remember the reaction in my neighborhood after Tug McGraw won the sixth game in the 1980 World Series. A lot of happy fans.
You couldn't have. That game wasn't televised in Philadelphia on the game day. It was aired later in the week. This is why you can't find any rebroadcast with Phillies announcers. There's a CZcams video of the game but it was using the radio feed.
@@Rockhound6165 Yes, it was. on Channel 17 in Philadelphia. They broadcast all of their away games, even when they were playing in day games only at that time Wrigley Field.
@@MrLeoni2 No it wasn't. You will not find any TV of this game from channel 17. I know, I lived in the area. Go and find it. Good luck. You won't find it. The only TV for this game in Philadelphia was a rebroadcast about a week later. Jesus I hate it when people argue when I know I'm right. But go ahead. Search the interwebs and find a WPHL TV broadcast of this game but do you know how I know it wasn't on TV in the area? Because there's a video of the game with the Phillies radio broadcast and Harry Kalas called the 1st 3 innings on radio. On televised games he and Asburn would call innings 4, 5, & 6. But keep arguing. czcams.com/video/dVzU_icHHLI/video.html
Kong's blast hit the 4th house on the 5th lot up Kenmore. 575 ft. range. Lou's initial call was incorrect/he corrected it on the replay. The ball struck the south side of the porch the guy goes out onto.
Playground baseball in the Major Leagues.
It seems like the Phillies and Cubs are always having high scoring games, including the 18-16 one in 1976
Sure seems like it!
That's the game Schmidt hit 4 straight home runs.
@@Rockhound6165 I met a guy at a cubs game who still has his score card from that game.
I never knew Pete Rose was a switch-hitter somehow
Watching these videos - just 30 years ago sometimes, I'm amazed at how far field prep and maintenance has come in that time. That MLB level field at Wrigley was a dusty mess back then, as was most of the fields. Anyway, just random things I notice. Ha.
I can’t help but notice the soccer lines on the field.
There are people who complain about NYCFC chewing up the turf at Yankee Stadium now.
Wrigley Field cleaned up its mess while Soldier Field made a worse one
Great Upload 👍 The Windy City Chicago... Wrigley Field is a hitters Park for players.
That it is!
Wrigley is actually a pitcher's park in the early part of the season, as the wind tends to blow in from Lake Michigan during the early spring. The wind also is much less significant at night.
Oh. I see someone already put that. Good video
thanks for watching!
It’s EE-Vahn. He’s Puerto Rican,not Russian. 😂😅😄😁😄😂
Fun Fact: Ivan DeJesus ends up getting traded to the Phillies for Larry Bowa and as a throw in...wait for it...Ryne Sandberg.
Who cares!
When I saw 8/25/22 I thought it was from the future
the windy city has nothing to do with the wind , that's why it's funny
0:03 well I’m now hungry…
deep dish pizza is delicious
Chicago's nickname as 'the windy city' has zero to do with the weather.
It isn't the windiest city, either.
Is it safe to say that Dave Kingman had about 1,500 ft. of Home Run that game (no exaggeration?)
And when did the Phillies face the Cubs this coming August?
Right. So what was the right year for that game?
It’s called the Windy City because of the politicians, not wind.
The windy city is in reference to the political windbags that Chicago is known for...not the wind
Good video but Chicago was named the Windy City because of political reasons.
I got on here to say that. I was hoping someone caught it too.
Interesting that you think Rose should be in the Hall... I suppose you're entitled to your opinion, as wrong as it is... But Rose gambled on games he was involved with, a huge threat to the honest "try-every-day-as-hard-as-you-can" efforts that the fans deserve to see. Even if he only bet on his team (and this is heavily disputed), what does that say about the days he didn't bet??
You now can watch it here...
