  • Baseball fields do not have standard outfield dimensions. In some cases, baseball fields end up in a "run what you brung" situation - where the weirdest things can happen. This video has them all.

6:25 That's Ralph Earnhardt, father of Dale Earnhardt Sr, sending a guy named Dick Plemmons into the dugout. Lee Petty, father of Richard Petty also found himself in that same dugout during practice for the 1958 race, but repaired his car and finished 4th for the main event. Jim Paschal won the race. The track measured just a quarter mile in length. Absolutely insane little short track.

I played there once when I played baseball in my freshman year of high school. It’s located in the Two Bridges section of Chinatown. Even though I found it interesting to play next to the Manhattan Bridge (drew a walk, stole two bases, and scored a run), it wasn’t the weirdest ballpark I ever played in. Once when I was in little league, I played under the 59th Street Bridge on an all-clay field (you read that right) with a CF that was at least 450. It was the most unusual, but most fun ballpark I ever played in. It’s now an indoor tennis center.

The softball diamond wasn't there, the whole field was pretty primitive. For awhile they had this 12" high line of boards across the hill to mark the home run line. Crazy. And yeah, I did hit that guy's house behind the right field fence - my only high school home run, a 3-run shot against Eagle Rock High. Fond memories. BTW, Marshall had a killer team in 2022...

    Left: 317ft
    , Center: 400ft, Right: 328ft
Center varies between 390ft and 415ft because of a weird angled wall.
Neighboring Erie Insurance Arena (home of Connor McDavid when he played for the Erie Otters in the OHL) was renovated in 2013 and it's southfacing wall was pushed out to become the left field wall.
Raised left field home run line in 2022 from 17 feet to 36 feet (to above the large banner ads), just a foot shy of the Green Monster, essentially becoming Erie's "Ad Monster".

Love the video!!!!! Andrus field is located at Wesleyan University in Connecticut and is a multi use field that hosts football and various ceremonies and events as well. The field is in the center of campus which makes the sports events available to watch for all of the students. During the spring, there is a temporary fence to make the outfield more "regular" so it doesn't look exactly like you showed in the video.

My parents were my tball coaches and we once had our whole team practice in our front yard. We had a decent size driveway and a big yard. I specifically remember that being the most cars I'd ever seen line our driveway. And plenty of folks drove side by sides or something there. Geez that was about 17 years ago 😅

North Summit’s whole campus is just funky, with the mountains right up against it and highway running between the school grounds and the slope. First time I had a track meet there, everything looked so narrow and weird. The parking lot is just an extension of the highway and I wonder why no one gets hit by crazy drivers.
    Great video, as always!

Sam Lynn Ballpark in Bakersfield California deserves a shout. It's one of only 2 baseball stadiums in the country which has the batters facing the setting sun. We don't start games here in the summer until 830 pm because the batters can't see the pitches. The story I heard was that the field used to be a horse racetrack and they saved money by keeping the existing grandstand even though it faces the worst direction possible.

A weird field I played on was Archbishop Riordan High School in San Francisco. It was one of those rectangular multi-use fields, with the right field fence being only ~260 with a high wall. The 1st base line was also the football end zone, and the football field cut across the red infield and made playing on it really trippy.

Research the original ball field at the university of Texas at Austin, Texas. There was a rock mound cliff in centerfield in fair territory. It is gone now but did exist less than 50 years ago. I can remember being told of players scrambling up the protrusion to catch the ball for the out.

This reminded me of all the fields I grew up playing baseball on. Torosian Park, Maywood School, St. Patrick's Park, Alex MacKenzie Park. All in the same neighbourhood basically. Then we would drive across town and watch the St. Catharines Blue Jays play at George Taylor Field. I once watched my best friend loose his final Little League game there, and we used to play at the Community Park behind the hockey rinks there.

Thank you again for another great video. I live in nyc and the reason that Murray Bergtraum field is so noisy is because you have the FDR highway behind center field which in that area gets backed up by everyone trying to get on the Brooklyn Bridge and it's horn heaven from the cars also the Manhattan Bridge next to the field has 4 subway train lines running across the bridge. I went to high school in Staten Island and the Staten island Tech share the field with another high school McKee vocational because the 2 school's are small so it takes both to fill one team because S I T has the space and McKee has none because it's in a very high housing area not to mention it's all hills in that part of the Island.

When I was in high school we played against a near by high school with a shared field that had a track behind it. It was 440 down left field, 545 down right field and 605 to right / center field. Years after I graduated they put up a temporary fence on the baseball field to it had more normal dimensions.
