I have always been of the opinion: if you don't want opposing players to celebrate make sure they have nothing to celebrate. Otherwise it has always just come off as being petty because you got bested imo

I agree. But I hate the wave of things that aren’t organic. Like bat flips are here to stay. Love it. Lance Lynn cussing people out after strikeouts. Hilarious. But the Soto shuffle? Nimmo sprinting to first on a walk? These niche things are just mind games. It might be fun to watch for some people, but imo it’s distasteful. I think the line is drawn when it’s no longer celebratory and just a means to make a show when there isn’t one.

I've never seen people more in their feelings than baseball players "he celebrated too much, now I'm mad", "you stared 1 second more than what I perceive is allowed after a home run". These dudes would literally cry if they were in MMA or football.
I can't help but think it's not how much celebrating was done, but the way it was done. I noticed the people who didn't get thrown at did their celebrations in an elegant way, whereas those hit celebrated in an ugly way.

@@cako666 naturally beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but there's definitely something objective about beauty fundamentally. hard to put into words but you know it when you see it. And yes, naturally it's not nor shouldn't be an official rule, but that doesn't mean that it shouldn't be a thing in spirit. Honestly, if I wanted to watch an ugly sport I'd go watch football which is honestly pretty repulsive to me. What's intriguing about baseball is how "clean" and professional the sport itself is, and I think if there's any celebrations it should be kept to that same vibe and standard as best as possible.

I always thought it was strange that pitchers cam jump around, fis pump and yell in triumph when striking someone out but the batters can't celebrate at all without the pitchers getting upset.

As someone who is new to baseball, the whole bat flip thing is insane to me. Most of the examples shown here don't even look like a bat flip to me, just dropping the bat before you run. If these are all bat flips, I have literally no idea what the "correct" way to proceed would be after hitting a home run and no idea why anyone would get mad at someone for them celebrating doing something cool.
I grew up playing and watching baseball and I agree that a lot of those "flips" were nothing more than just tossing it quickly to the ground, I don't see why anyone is mad at those. I hate those flashy celebratory bat flips so much though - they're often so unnecessary and cocky. I'd want to plunk those guys as a pitcher. However, in some cases like Jose Bautista's, that was a big moment in a very tense and dramatic series (I'm also a Jays fan, so I'm biased) and honestly that Texas team deserved the humiliation.
Seeing some of this made me realize that when I used to play baseball when I was in my teens, people could've been claiming I was flipping the bat. I used to just swing and drop the bat as I ran to 1st, but once I had a teammate tell me that they nearly got injured because I dropped the bat right on the 3rd base line, so they had to avoid it while trying to score. Ever since then I adopted a swing pattern where if I swung, with the recoil off my follow-through, I'd use that momentum to throw the bat into foul ground on the 1st base side. Nowadays, this would be considered "bat flipping".
But yeah, it's crazy what some of those were. They were literally "swing and drop the bat" but it was a "bat flip". But if they tossed it aside, THAT was a bat flip. But if they held onto it longer, that was grandstanding... it basically was a case of "If we don't like you, we'll invent ways to claim you're a problem."
@@JimTheFly the on deck batter or umpire is supposed to move the bat if there’s a ply at the plate if they are aware. The on deck could also signal whether a slide was necessary but at high school and below not all players could or would do it. I know a few times I had to step over or around a bat while everyone just watched the play.
Look up Ichiro Suzuki for a "proper" way to put the bat down.

Honestly, I absolutely LOVE this current era. Give me personalities, give me player vs player beef, give me celebrations, ALL OF IT. Because we've been saying for years "These men are being paid millions of dollars for playing a GAME." And dammit, games are supposed to be fun. But in exchange for all that money, they've been asked to be soulless automatons on the field for years. ENOUGH. Especially since we also would hear "Why don't people watch baseball?" BECAUSE I WAS TAKING 3-4 HOURS AND NO ONE WAS ALLOWED TO HAVE A GODDAMN PERSONALITY.
Thank commissioner Rob Manford by putting in the Let The Kids Play campaign in 2018. He wanted to get rid the unwritten rules, because he felt they're too dated and it doesn't fit in today's game. More bat flips, excessive celebrations, and more individual personalities of players, makes the game more exciting, more fans at the ball park and more revenue for the MLB. Old players like Nolan Ryan, Goose Gossage, Dennis Martinez hate it.

When I was younger, I was a competitive bowler, and was the captain/anchor of my school teams. I had other anchors do shit like throw down gauntlets and whatnot with the idea of intimidation, and I learned the best way for ME to handle them was to just go right back and be as demonstrative. And I had guys IMMEDIATELY befriend me because of it, even though under the rules we were head-to-head competitors. We knew that from that point on, we were on equal footing and it became a point of respect, even if it looked like disrespect to outsiders.
So yeah, I love me some beef. As long as people don't take it personal and let it get out of hand... that shit gets to be FUN.

In my view It’s disrespectful to your opponent to give anything less than maximum effort until the game ends. If the other team doesn’t think they can win and wants mercy they should forfeit the game.
The only reason the other team is still playing is because they’re hoping for a rally and in baseball you can feasibly score any number of runs and come back. It’s the job of the winning team to tack on as many insurance runs as possible, treating each at bat as though the game is tied.
only born losers think "don't win by too much" is some sort of unwritten rule. If this was uniform across the board then MLB may as well implement mercy rule.

I'd agree, except the one time I got someone back, it created a camaraderie. Guy tried to intimidate me because I was a freshman, and when I won, I stared right at him and went "*THAT'S* HOW YOU WIN!" Guy dapped me up and we became instant colleagues because I basically passed his test, since he knew that I couldn't be thrown off my game like that.
So yeah, your call is probably the better one. But I did manage to make the opposite choice work.
My main thing about this is that humans are emotional. You’re already playing the game you love. You’re focused. You’re in the zone. Then you do something to help your team win, of course you’re gonna be excited! Duh! And any Pitcher who does some crazy strikeout and beats their chest and yells after has zero room to get mad at a Batter.
Yeah but just because humans have emotions doesn’t mean you get to act on them. If I acted on all my emotions i’d probably get fired from my job, punched in the face, arrested ect. Control yourself. Especially when a lot of these acts are directed at other people to get a rise out of them.

Had a coach that pitched for the royals in the 90’s. He drilled these rules into us in high school and would torture us in practice if we celebrated anything. To him, baseball was about being professional and he always brought that up as a defining characteristic of the sport.

Super fun video! I didn't know about any of this stuff... The opening two minutes has me rolling with laughter and I haven't even seen the rest of the video. I've only seen a few bat flips... I literally didn't watch any baseball until the Phillies made the playoffs this year. I'll have to tune in now if they're doing this. I came up when fighting was part of the sport, so this is a reminder of that. Some of these dudes are Extra AF!!!
This is such an interesting inflection point for baseball and it’s notable how the MLB as an organization is trying to have it both ways, such as suspending Anderson but also using the suspendable offense as marketing. It’s so difficult to tell if this is a good move by the MLB for baseball or just a desperate move to get new fans but, either way it’s a welcome change to see fewer players targeted with baseballs moving at 95 mph.
Really, though, it’s channels like this and Jomboy that are helping baseball. Telling stories in compelling, accessible ways to people who otherwise wouldn’t look into them is hugely important. Baseball has a richer history than any other major American sport and it needs to find a way to embrace that history while also embracing the 21st century, and fast.
The accessibility of a well edited summary is so much easier to grasp than the investment of us old guys who used to huddle around radios listening to AM broadcasts. It really messes with the depth of fandom in some funny ways. In one way it's shallow because of the accessibility, but in other ways the thought put into, and invoked from it is very complex. I'm a huge fan for having experienced multiple eras but I hope some of these younger fans enjoy the game in ways I always have.
@DEAD GRATEFUL that was because of the “Jimmy Graham Rule” which punished players who did that dunking celebration. Jimmy Graham, having gone to college for basketball and not football, carried that celebration with him his whole career (until they banned it). but the reason they DID ban it was because there were instances where the result of the celebration was the goalposts being misaligned and thus requiring stoppage of play until they’re fixed.
You’re exactly right when I’ve always been into sports basketball, hockey, football but not baseball, always thought it was old boring and dying. But started watching baseball CZcams and now baseball is one of my favourite sports as a fan. If it wasn’t for baseball CZcams I would’ve never been a fan
Baseball isn't going anywhere anytime soon. People like to sound the alarms and act like it's a dead sport but that's not the case. Baseball does very well regionally in places like New York, Boston, St. Louis, Cincinnati, etc. and that's not gonna change in the near future. It has grown in popularity in recent years, and while it hasn't grown as fast as the other major sports it's still incredibly profitable. Baseball may not have as big of a mainstream nationwide cultural impact as it once had but it will always have a loyal following.

The unwritten rules around showboating, while goofy, are one thing. The rules around when your actually allowed to play the damn game are ridiculous, make the product worse and undermine the integrity of the sport.

The unwritten rules about blowouts make sense. Everyone is trying to stay injury free and if someone is going all out while everyone else is coasting, they might hurt someone.

@@tek3311 This is a good point. Football teams do get knocked if they throw deep in blowouts. But I think in a era where there incentives in contracts for stats and increasingly legal gambling it’s dangerous to discourage playing the whole game.
This is why baseball is dying. You can't even fucking play the game without a pitcher/manager/hitter throwing a tantrum. It's fucking stupid and makes the game slow and boring.

Considering picking up the sport as a life long basketball fan. I always thought bat flips were dope asf and it weirded me out when i learned most fans/players at the time hated it.

Adrian Gonzalez dad was my high school coach, he would celebrate more than we would. Dude was a legend of a coach. He always had our back too.
I'm not a big baseball fan and I'm commenting late so I doubt anyone will see this. But from what I've observed in the sport world, the sports thay try and restrict player personalities and hold on too tightly to tradition only end up hurting themselves. Social media has made it so that players personalities are way more important than ever before, not leaning into that strength will only harm the sports popularity in the long run.

I think that's the major problem with Baseball. The sport is still massive but I can't name more than 1 superstar personality off the top of my head, and it's personalities that get people to watch.
Never watched F1 before learning about Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen, Basketball has always had household names, the NFL has also never had trouble having huge personalities and marketing them.
Baseball though? They try and make it seem like a stage-play instead of letting star players BE star players.
No i feel its almost the opposite. Rugby has a very strict culture, to the point some team layouts in the WC are being called "immoral", and its doing great. They take pride in the fact they suppress "personalities" because you cant let 130kg monsters act like petulant disrespectful children. Any of these pimp walk or crotch grab celebrations would be unheard of, and likely end a rugby players career
Intentionally hitting a player can end his career and outside the baseball field, would be considered a felony. I just don't understand how baseball still accepts that as "part of the game."

I mean, to be fair, you can literally fight each other in hockey and the penalty is sitting out for a few minutes, which obviously would not be treated the same outside the context of the game. Though at least both parties have equal opportunity to defend themselves there, and it's not "someone throws a projectile at an opponent (who didn't even do anything...just followed the guy who did in the lineup)."

However I think another important aspect that not a lot of people realize about fighting in hockey is that there's an etiquette there. Shocking I know, but some of the more "brutal" looking fights you'll see in hockey, the two guys are at the very least on decent speaking terms with one another off the ice. Fighting is just a big part of the game in terms of morale, and despite the perceived violence it actually serves an underlying purpose. Far more so than to rile fans up, that's just an added bonus in most circumstances haha

And going over my aunts house, an avid baseball fan, she would have a baseball game on tv, and I would be so bored. But it was something good about how the atmosphere in the house changed, like the air was crisp clear, and all you could hear was the guys reporting on the game. That was what just kept me watching, not knowing hind nor tail what was going on, just basking in that peace I was feeling. I loved playing street ball outside, but just didn't like sitting watching it on tv.
I think they took what was suppose to be a good all American sport, and just made it more vicious. I dunno, just my opinion.

Exactly. Baseball needs some reformation in this aspect. It’s practically a game for old people, at least that’s what most people I know think.
Making it possible to watch games without jumping through a billion hoops would help as well. Goodness knows if I wasn't already invested, I'd have thrown my hands up and called it a day ages ago having to deal with the various blackout restrictions.
Viewership dies because 99% of teams are paylocked behind blackout deals with specific cable tv sources. If baseball was aired on public television, you’d see a massive spike in viewership.

People dont like gloating. It's the same as telling your big brother if he doesnt like you taunting him, he should get better at Halo. Typically that results in some sort of fight. They are "unwritten rules" in the same way not giving someone the middle finger, not microwaving fish in the office, and calling your mom on mother's day are all "unwritten rules". They are guidelines that warn you if someone is likely to be upset by an action.

@@bkoetter42 All sports have evolved over the years. Baseball was just the last to catch up. They are getting there tho. I can go either way with it. I love seeing guys hit tanks but at the same time I can also appreciate a 2-1 pitchers duel. To me that’s what makes baseball unique. Nobody likes watching a football game that ends 3-0 or a low scoring basketball game, but if a guy has electric stuff that nobody can touch it’s just as exciting to me.

A big baseball fan friend of mine always liked to tout how unique baseball is by constantly pointing out that it’s the only major sport where the defense is primarily in control of the ball. I always thought that was a cool take. I also appreciate, even if I don’t fully understand it, how it’s more of a chess match than most sports. I def prefer flashier baseball, and I’m sure a lot of that is my ignorance in the actual nuances of the sports inner workings.
I think when sports have such a long history, modernization always comes with resistance. We can see similar trends in golf as well. A lot of silly debates over things like wearing hoodies and shit. Not exactly apples to apples but it is interesting to see evolutions and the inherent backlash thereof.

As a Jays Fan who started watching the season before the bat flip, I love the fact that teams are starting to “let go” a little. It makes the game more entertaining, and since all the young guys have come up, it’s nice to see them genuinely having fun as a team.
