  • David Wright was not only one of the best players of his generation, but one of the best third basemen of all time. A freak injury derailed his promising career before he could achieve his full potential.

Life long 42 year old Mets fan since the early 80s. He wasn’t just a great player in his prime, but a great guy, and a great ambassador for the game. Sometimes they need to elect players into the HOF that meant something to the game during X years. David was that guy. For 10+ years he was a great player, great ambassador, great guy yes, but he was also clean. No performance enhancing drugs at all. Did a lot for the game, charities, and representing NYC. He made kids wanna play the game the right way. The HOF shouldn’t just be stats, it should also be about properly playing and Representing the game itself. Just my humble opinion.

Agreed! The WBC, Captain America, home run derby, competitiveness, played with 100%, an ambassador, truly a good guy and #s that are hof bound. He didn’t get hurt by doing something too hard. (Like pitchers that blow out their arm 2-3 times because they overthrow). He had a disease that cut his career short. Guys like David, guys that are bigger than the sport, could do a lot to offset the eventual acceptance of A-rod, Bonds, McGwire, and all the players who’s HR production increases after age 33 by significant margins. I’ve argued the hall could have “tiers” or different wings for different players. A wing for the steroid guys we all know eventually get in, a hall for the Tom Seaver, Hank Aaron, Babe Ruth type guys, the best ever, and a wing for the “just imagine” players. CY Young, David Wright and others who can now be voted in but it would be mentioned that the numbers might not be eye popping but a simple look into their “prime” or entire shortened career and see how great they were for a time. Even without that happening I still feel Wright not being in the Hall is exactly the reason baseball loses more and more young fans every year, the league doesn’t understand their fans.

He’ll get in. He was the fourth most talented 3rd Baseman in the history of the sport and the best position player in the history of his franchise. The face of baseball itself by 2013. He embodies everything the Hall of Fame represents. He shouldn’t be penalized for a career cut short before he was “allowed” to decline and post 6 more years of slightly above average seasons to pad his stats like Tim Raines. The man didn’t even post below replacement level WAR seasons while playing with spinal stenosis at the end. He’s an absolute monster and will most likely be getting in - if at least via the veteran’s committee.

On top of being a great player he was disciplined, hard working, and loved the game of baseball. His bat was very advanced even in high school. His bat was by far the best I played against. He was solid everywhere else as well. I actually know another guy I played with, a left handed center fielder, great bat, world class speed, who was far more athletic and gifted than David. He could have made it to the league just of his speed alone and he was a great all around player - somewhat like Mike Trout but even quicker. commenting in 2024 bc I am pumped that david got above 5% on his first HoF ballot this year. given how difficult it is for 3Bs to make the HoF, with or without an injury-shortened career, it’ll certainly be a tough fight… but you can make the argument that he has the stats. i think most ppl are worried about his career WAR and his defensive stats… but his career WAR is honestly ok, especially considering that we seem to be trending in the direction of “10-year career peak” assessments and away from “net career output” assessments. additionally, the advanced defensive stats are the least refined/ most problematic modern stats that we have, and ppl throw them out/ discredit them for a reason. he’s a multi-time golden glove winner, and that should speak for itself. (he’s certainly not even close to a below average defender, as one of the aforementioned useless/flawed stats would suggest). additionally, he’s one of only four captains in the mets history, and he’s arguably the person who has had the most net positive impact- on and off the field, while playing and in his retirement-on the mets in modern history. if voters are using the “character defense” as a legitimate reason to keep people out of the HoF, i think we could also consider using the “character defense” in the affirmative to give an extra push to players like Wright who had an undeniably positive impact on & off the field (and whose legacy is still felt at every game in Flushing!!) David Wright for the HoF for his undeniable Mets legacy; for his character, determination, and leadership; and for being a Damn Good Player!!

it’s impossible to say for sure that this one play was what did him in. Stress fractures can be chronic/ acute and most athletes are having micro stressfractures all the time. sometimes there is an event that leads to the more painful and noticable fracture resulting in symptoms. additionally you can’t say for sure that stenosis was caused by the stress fracture (more likely causes are severe arthritis or disc herniation) but it could
be. Wright likely had back issues this whole time and didn’t complain about it because the dude is such a stud. Forget coopers town, Wright is a hero and one of the only players I actually admire. LOVE ME SOME DEGROM AND RA DICKIE AMI RIGHT

Outside of the Machado incident, people forget that before Pedroia broke his foot in 2010, he was starting to hit for legitimate power and could have had a 25+ homer season. And he also had repeated wrist and thumb injuries as well. It's genuinely sad to think of what could have been for them if they'd stayed healthy. And it's very sad watching Tatis, Acuna, Robert, and others like them suffer repeated injuries in baseball today and wonder if we will be denied the ability to watch some of baseball's best players play at their best.

The greatest has to go to Seaver or Piazza or Hernandez imo. Wright is up there, but yeah... All he ever won was a Pennant and honestly it was because of Cepedes, Murphy and the pitching. Though he did boost the team a lot down the stretch during that run.
His 06-08 seasons were his best, but the team choked hard, and then the team sucked after that. Being on a bad team hurts your chances to make the hall i feel, because you're not getting rings or pennants or even a division, and writers take value in that i think. As you mentioned, injuries really hurt him, but that's part of the game, sadly. Also the old dimensions of Citi field messed with him mentally.

You should read his book. I’m currently reading it and it’s so good. That hit to the head did have effects that he goes into depth about. I’m a die hard Braves fan and grew up idolizing Chipper Jones, but I gained so much respect for Wright towards the end of his career. Just a great ball player and person. His stolen base numbers surprised the hell out of me

Jones was a better hitter than Murray...
      Murray from '78 - '90 posted a 4.2 oWAR per 650 PA
      Jones from '96 - '08 posted a 6.0 oWAR per 650 PA
Jones has him beat in all the other offensive categories, too, during their respective primes like AVG, OBP, OPS, OPS+, HR, TB, etc...

Destined for Cooperstown my ass. This man was a bonafide scrub! He couldn't play! No disrespect whatsoever, but I'm sorry to tell everybody the truth, the man could not play the game of baseball. He had small hands, he couldn't catch the ball, he had bad feet, he couldn't really move even though he's mobile, didn't really know what he's doing. He had no game whatsoever, played no defense, didn't have the heart, the passion or anything that comes with it.
