20 year old gen Z here. Raised by my great grandparents half my life, got to meet my great great grandparents who lived through the great depression and WW2. Learned a lot, how to be frugal, how to redneck engineer stuff to make it work, and how important the past actually is. My great grandparents are still alive thank the lord, but I am to inherit most of my great grandfathers heirlooms. These are the things I will cherish forever, and each one holds a memory to when I was growing up. As I sit at my desk that was once my great great grandmothers listening to this song typing this out, it brings a tear to my eye every time.

This emotional number about an elderly man looking back at his life was written by Johnson as a tribute to his grandfather. The country singer-songwriter explained to Roughstock: "He died in 2000; I've got memories of him. He didn't know I was a songwriter or a singer. He just knew I could sing and write and that I was moving Nashville to get it done. He died probably the first eight months that I was in town. I've always wanted to pay tribute back to thank him for the lessons growing up, all the conversations with him. Nobody ever pays attention to that stuff until they're gone I'm afraid. I had a long way to go, I wanted him to be around a lot longer, I wasn't ready for him to go. So it's kind of appropriate way to introduce this album to the public."
This was named Song of the Year at the 2009 Academy of Country Music Awards. In his acceptance speech, Johnson said: "I thank these two guys up here - Lee Miller and James Otto - for helping me write this song. Thanks to my band, too, for going in on an off day and producing an off record." Later in the year, the song won the 2009 CMA Song of the Year Award.
Lee Miller told the story behind the song's inspiration for the book Nashville Songwriter: The Inside Stories Behind Country Music's Greatest Hits: by Jake Brown. "You look for the phrase that gives you a reason to write a song," he said. "And I was telling Jamey a story about some event that I'd been to, and it was a story … about Nashville back in the '60s and some pictures in black and white … I'm talking, and he's kind of zoned out … and he said, 'There's your idea. You think that's somethin', you should've seen it in color.'"
He added "Those ideas are hard to come by … At that point, just don't mess it up; just write it correctly."
Miller and Johnson, along with James Otto began talking about their own grandparents, and the song stemmed from memories of their grandfathers. "In a lot of ways, it's a song about our grandfathers," Miller said.
The second verse ("In the middle of hell in 1943...) is about the experiences of Lee Miller's grandfather during World War II.

Amen Amber, when we are young we are very much into ourselves. I remember many stories my dad would tell and as a youth I would think not again. Now in my 70’s I have more questions I wish I could ask and get answers to. I have black and white pictures of our family and love looking at them. Time is fleeting and to the younger folks out there listen and ask questions because that will be a treasure when you are older.

My parents were born in 1935 and grew-up through the end of the depression. My dad had 2 uncles (my grandpas younger brothers) both went into the navy and were on the USS California in Pearl Harbor on Dec 7th when the Japanese struck the base wiping out all of our battle ships along with many other ships in the harbor. Uncle Mike watched his brother Roy, get killed while Roy was trying to get some ammunition from below deck up to one of the machine guns on deck. Mike went on to several other battles in the Pacific and was sunk on 2 more ships seeing most of his friends die. Somehow Mike survived before being released to come back home. So yeah the depression was really tough for everybody, as there was no money and people were just trying to survive followed by WWII. I can't listen to this song without tearing up after hearing some of the stories that that generation went through. Jamey captures these times perfectly in this song!

Girl, I cried right along with you. This song does it to me every single time. My mom died a month shy of 54, I was 23 years old at the time (I'm 53 now). I have a million questions I never thought to ask while she was alive, I was too young to know I needed to ask questions that only she could answer. My dad died two years later so I was an orphan at 25. My parents were immigrants, I have no aunt's, uncle's, grandparents, cousins... no one, so the history died with them. So, yeah, songs like this make me cry and that's okay. It's a beautiful song and he really has a very emotive voice so it just makes it that much better.

My dad spent most my childhood in the Navy, my mom was a Marine, after that they both spent many years off traveling for construction jobs. So I spent most of my time with my grandparents who were children of the great depression and WW2. So this song resonates with me so hard. Looking at those old pictures and hearing stories of how my grandparents grew up through all of that hardship. Looking at all of the black and white pictures of them in their teens and twenties as they worked themselves to the bone starting a new family...you'd have no idea how hard it really was for them through all the smiles they had on their faces as they were working sugar cane or cotton fields or caring for all of their siblings who tended not to make it.

I've heard this song 100 times and I was crying right along with you Amber. I'm 55, just had a stroke 2 weeks ago and it has been such a huge REALITY check. And I've been listening to songs from my childhood, but I love watching you both, and I've said this before, my favorite reaction video you've done will always be ROCK LOBSTER. Watching Amber eventually getting into and the look on his face like what is going on. I love it. Thanks for doing what you do and I'm thankful I found your channel. Have a wonderful Thanksgiving. God Bless.

This song also made me think of a song by Trace Atkins, called You're Gonna Miss Us. It lines up with your thoughts about one day your kids being grown and looking back. I love this song but don't listen to it often because it makes me cry too much, thinking about how time is flying by being a mom. lol

Jamey is my favorite country artist! I’ve seen him in concert 6 times, met him after a show, and own every album he’s ever released (even before he got famous) His voice breaks my heart, in a good way!
My next suggestion is “Back to Caroline” or “My way to you” ❤
AND “Give it away” by George Straight, which Jamey wrote, and won awards for…

There's something really beautiful about old black and white photos. It's like they hold a mystery that you try to fill in with your imagination. With all of this technology we have now our grand kids will be able to go back and watch videos of us when we were young, and they'll be able to see our personalities, and see what we were like. But we don't get that with our grandparents. When we're looking at old pictures we just have to use our imaginations to try and fill in that mystery, it's really wholesome and beautiful.

This song.. makes me miss my dad. Sitting on his lap looking at the old pictures and asking him so many questions. Those people in those pictures all had hopes, fears, loves, they all were human like you and me. Never forget that. A picture is a look into a single moment in a persons life. I don't like pictures of me, simply because I was there, and I remember it. You can look at my pictures but there are some that I refuse to talk about. Those memories are mine and mine alone. I may have some photo's on black and white film but guys, that life was being lived in full technicolor. I close my eyes and that black car is really a beautiful purple that I could never describe. Talk to an older person today, they have wisdom that you don't realize you need.
